Vikings Waive Berrian

EDIT: FSUViking managed to beat all of us to this one, so what the heck. . .let's give him the glory of the main page, shall we?

This has been a long time coming, and it's finally happened. I'm sure we'll have more on this as the day goes on, but here's a spot for everyone to talk about it. - Chris

The Vikings have apparently cut ties with Bernard Berrian by placing him on waivers. It would be interesting to see if anyone places a claim, but at this point that seems unlikely.

I think my only memory of Berrian in purple will be his 99 yard TD. I think this move is best for both parties. It wasn't working out, no need to continue to force the relationship. I'm actually a little surprised they made the move now, but I think it was the right move all along. I never really saw the heart from Berrian, he always seemed more interested in his twitter and bank account than his preformance for the team.

We can hope...

that Asher Allen has plenty of time to talk to him on the sidelines, but somehow I’m afraid he won’t.

Actually, I heard he tried to...

…but then changed his mind…called a time out…thought about it some more…until an anonymous Vikings fan ripped the pink slip out of Frazier’s hand and handed it to Berrian. Berrian was too busy Twittering to notice what he’d been handed which pissed Frazier off enough that Frazier decided to make Berrian inactive again for this Sunday…but then he changed his mind again and decided to cut Berrian from the team.

4 down, 1 to go

Tarvaris Jackson
Madieu Williams
Bryant McKinnie
Bernard Berrian

You think Tyrell Johnson knows it’s coming? He’s gotta be #5.

I can’t give much praise yet to Frazier considering the way this season has unfolded. But for getting rid of the expensive dead weight on the roster, I definately give him credit for that.

getting rid of one of our better (and younger) DB’s is too knee-jerk for me…

I will not be PONDERing anything, ever again....I'm so tired of this pun. Maybe we could use antonyms to be different, like: "FORGET about last season, as we COGITATE about winning in 2011!"...Whatever, SKOL VIKES!!!

yea, maybe it's too early for that reaction. losing a cornerback...that would suck....

but, we’ll see when the whole drama unfolds. could be dropped charges, could be that he is not a guy worth keeping due to off field conduct. but so far it looks like he did something really bad.

warcraft, you are my guitar hero !!!

by danny lloyd on Oct 25, 2011 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure if “knee jerk” is the word I’d use. The guy’s facing felony domestic assault charges (potential sentence of three years in prison), and he’s less than a year removed from being accused of brandishing a gun while gawking at a neighborhood incident.

I don’t expect them to cut him before they see how this incident shakes out, but this is some potentially heavy stuff. Best corner or no, they might be forced to put their foot down. (And at any rate, it’s not like he’s Darrelle Revis…) We’ll see. At the very least, if he returns to the team, he’s facing two strikes.

by jianfu on Oct 25, 2011 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

The Vikings should suspend him themselves for as long as possible

but I do not think they can do that under the CBA.

I would look at picking up Brandon Ghee from Cincinnati’s practice squad myself.

by MarkSP18 on Oct 25, 2011 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know about the CBA

But my guess is that the commish will suspend Mr. Cook indefinitely.

by amiller92 on Oct 25, 2011 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt it

He only suspended Big Ben 6 games for his conduct. Several other players were suspended a game for domestic violence arrests.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/lists/NFL-players-suspended-by-Roger-Goodell#photo-title=Cary%20Williams,%20two%20games,%202010&photo=11502470

Rocky Bernard got one game for allegedly doing this …

According to the police report, the victim and a friend of hers were at a nightclub on 2nd Avenue in Seattle early this morning when the victim saw Bernard — who is the victim’s ex-boyfriend and father of her baby — in an argument with another woman.

“The suspect walked toward the victim and punched her one time with a closed fist, striking her forehead, causing her forehead to hit a glass divider,” an officer wrote in the report.
-————————————————————————————————————-

I would have to put my money on a 2 to 4 game suspension from the league considering his prior arrest this summer even though no charges were filed.

It is kind of odd that with the seriousness of the charges his bail was only $40,000. Of course I know nothing about how setting bail works but this seems awfully low for a serious crime such as this one.

by MarkSP18 on Oct 25, 2011 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd say you're right on the money with the 2-4 game suspension.

His future with the Vikings won’t be decided for a long time yet. This incident looks pretty bad but this type of conduct is unfortunately very common in the NFL and probably 95% of players that get in trouble with the law stay in the league unless they get into trouble 3-4 times. Hopefully Cook will pay his price if convicted, and become a better man instead of going down the other path that leads to multiple arrests and a ticket out of the NFL.

by Grime on Oct 26, 2011 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually 40 grand is a high bond

Considering it’s a non murder charge, and only has the potential for a 3 year sentence. Being that he has a “clean” record (no convictions) he could plea the charge down to a high misdemeanor, which would mean probation and some fines.

by nmvikesfan on Oct 25, 2011 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I think you're supposed to get rid of the expensive dead weight before the season starts.

After that, it’s still expensive when you cut them.

Long time coming.

As I’ve said quite often, I felt the deal that Berrian made regarding the restructuring tied Frazier’s hands. It will be interesting what the official reason for the split will be- if Frazier will come out and say that it was due to poor production (OK, granted, I’m sure he’ll say it in a more political way, but still).

As far as DBs who should be sweating goes, I think Tyrell Johnson probably has less to be worried about at this time than Chris Cook. I’m going to be VERY interested in seeing how that works out. Of course, there probably will be absolutely no news until Cook is formally charged, arraigned, enters a plea, etc. With his skill and production being pretty damn solid all things considered (especially amongst our DB corpse… er, corps), I doubt the Vikes will do anything until then.

What’s with all the trade fantasies? The guy is likely to go through waivers unclaimed. If that’s the case, why would anyone have traded anything for him?

I'm digging the midseason overhaul/young gun try out.

If you’re 1-6 you can’t pretend you’re going to do anything this year except for work on next year. I’ll have more fun watching Ponder work the offense + new young kids working hard than us attempting to prolong the inevitable lost year.

by Purpledork on Oct 25, 2011 12:42 PM CDT reply actions

OK, third post.

Then I’m out.

Anyhoo… here’s a crazy theory that just popped into my head that’s probably not too crazy. I wonder if the reason for his deactivation… which all things considered, was quite odd… and subsequent release was due to Ponder being named the starter over McNabb?? The fact that Ponder is named starter, and then Berrian is deactivated and then released, screams “not a coincidence!” to me. Perhaps Berrian pitched a fit in the locker room? Downed the QBOTF to teammates? Refused to catch passes from him in practice?

The idea of just ‘cutting dead weight’ at this point doesn’t hold water without another reason. We’re not trading him for anything. Throwing an essentially unproven rookie into the mix over a vet (OK, yes, a vet who’s proven to be essentially useless) without seeing if maybe, just maybe, BB and Ponder could have had SOME sort of chemistry first, seems odd- especially considering we didn’t decide to throw said rookie into the mix against Green Bay, and opted to just have a short-handed receiving corps in there for Ponder to toss to. There’s gotta be another cause at this point… and again, it just seems TOO coincidental that this is all finally happening right after Ponder gets the reins.

Correct me if I'm wrong,

But wasn’t Ponder asked if he missed Berrian on the field post game and he more or less said “no”?

Must have missed that...

but that would be quite telling. Of course, hard for Ponder to miss him on the field, seeing as how he wasn’t ever really out there on it with him.

Then again, neither was Donovan McNabb, Brett Favre, Tavaris Jackson, or Joe Webb. BAM!

Have a feeling

Ponder used his weight and said no way with Berrian. After all lets face it, Berrian did not make any QB look great the last 2 years. Also we do not know if they shopped him before the trade, I cannot imagine anyone would entertain the thought of picking him up.

On the same token..

You can take it as he already knew and then its going against Frazier to say yes.
Im not saying hes going to be a HUGE miss here. But I do think he was under used this season by a QB that couldnt throw past 5 yards. And when the QB that could throw hit him multiple times a week ago, he caught them just fine.

by LeeleeX on Oct 25, 2011 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it was Ponder's doing.

As was said above, I’d be amazed if a guy on his first NFL start would have that kind of weight. (And that would NOT be a good sign from the coaching staff.) I know Berrian was there for Ponder against Chicago and they did alright- that doesn’t mean BB was OK with Ponder getting the start. Perhaps BB was OK with Ponder playing in garbage time, but upon hearing that he was getting the nod permanently over McNabb, he flipped a lid. The guy’s not shown a ton of ‘political acumen’ this season. I’d agree, it would be stupid for him to want McNabb out on the field over Ponder, considering his lack of success with McNabb- but that doesn’t mean he felt that way regardless. Who knows? Maybe he and McNabb became BFF’s this season.

All in all, it’s just a theory for now, until either proven/ disproven. I’m just defending the possibility, by no means saying it’s the truth.

And, of course, they hooked up 5 times against the Bears, but yeah, there is something else going on.

by amiller92 on Oct 25, 2011 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Like I posted above

just because BB was doing decent with Ponder in the garbage time against Chicago meant he was cool with Ponder being the full-time starter. I’m definitely sensing some sort of connection here.

I'm at a loss for words. Daily Norseman

by KJSegall on Oct 25, 2011 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

PS... again.

It’s actually also noteworthy that BB did OK with Ponder in the end of the Bears game… because then it seems like Frazier would have been keen to get BB on the field against GB to see if that kept going. SOMETHING caused Frazier to bench a WR and go into a very important game somewhat short-handed at that position, and at pretty much the last second, no less. I just can’t imagine a lack of production thus far would have caused that… Frazier’s stuck up for Berrian long enough now that you’d think he’d want to see how he did with a new QB under center. Having given him this many chances, and having passed the trade deadline anyways, why not give him ANOTHER chance in the game against Green Bay?

…maybe he just had strep throat, I dunno.

I'm at a loss for words. Daily Norseman

by KJSegall on Oct 25, 2011 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah, that woulda been for health reasons

Should have never brought him back this year. We would have been much better off, letting his ass go, never signing McNabb, and keeping Sidney Rice. But, hindsight is always 20-20. I’m just glad he’s finally gone. Let’s hope some young guys from the Practice Squad can be brought up to "speed’ (see what I did there?).

Is there a way to delete previous comments???

Before the season started I believe I made the comment that Berrian would end up with 750 yds and a handful of TD’s. Looks like I was only off by about 700 yds and a handful of TD’s on my prediction. Really thought a change at QB plus being completly healthy would make the difference, I forgot that he did not have the desire to go up and make a catch when needed.

Burton was big and physical with good YAC skills but he dropped a lot of balls and looked pretty raw in the preseason.

Arceneaux looked a lot more polished than Burton to my eye but Burton looked like he had some physical skills like a TO or Brandon Marshall type. I think Manny looked better but Burton might have more long-term upside.
