Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Ask a Raider Fan

How goes it Daily Norsemen? (That line was meant to be in my best Minnesota accent, which is terrible).

With this week's upcoming Vikings-Raiders clash, I've come from Silver and Black Pride to come talk Raider football with you guys for this week in the leadup to this game.

Last week we had a near flawless offensive performance against the Chargers even with Darren McFadden out and Jacoby Ford injuring himself in the first quarter. Both could play this game, but I wouldn't stake money on it.

For me personally, this is a game I've been looking forward to for four years since my best friend is a die-hard Vikings fan. and I've had it in for you guys since Favre cost me $700 in that game. I'm sure you guys know the one I mean and don't like talking about it. Good news though is in my (not very humble) opinion, you've got a keeper in Ponder - I hated him when he was at FSU, but I respected the way he carried that pretty lousy team (what other skill position guys from them are getting drafted? Not many).

Basically you guys know how this works. Rec this post so it stays up top and everything, and I'll do my best to answer any questions y'all have on the Raiders.

This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

What are your thought on Palmer? should he remain the started once Campbell is healthy?

by Norse on Nov 15, 2011 8:06 AM CST reply actions

I think he should and will.

He throws the deep ball far better than JC could. He’s a perfect fir for a team where even the fullback runs a 4.4 (No joke. Reese actually clocked it).

I think Carson Palmer is a franchise quarterback who is borderline elite….. (especially if Eli is being considered as such nowadays), Jason Campbell was a good game manager and all, but he was slow in his decision making, and lacked a live arm to stretch the field with all the speed we have on offense….I’m much happier now that we have CP3, because i know he makes our offense / team much better…I appreciate everything JC has done in helping turn the RAIDERS team around, but with that said i’m glad we made the move for Palmer…

Raider Nation, all hand's on deck or get the hell off the ship! That's the way it's gonna be around here from now on! If a 7th & 5th round pick gets you Aaron Curry (a former 4th overall 1st rd. pick) instead of a couple of crap-shoots a year later, then fine and if dealing away a couple of first rounder's gets you a proven franchise quarterback like Carson Palmer and a legitimate shot at the playoffs, then great, you know why? Because our team is standing behind it's motto & legacy, "Just Win Baby!" and "Commitment to Excellence" instead of "Suck for Luck" and "Give Up". Imagine if you were a fan of a team that actually bought into that!?!

i saw a lot of the raider game last week. palmer looks like he's kicking off the rust.

man, he threw some sweet balls. it seems like a screwy way to end up with a guy like that, and i’m feeling it for campbell, but there seemed to be a little spark with palmer playing.
it seems like kind of a crazy year for you guys. but things look like they are coming together.

You paid too much for Palmer, right?

Or are Raider fans generally OK with giving up that much for him? If he takes the team to the playoffs, does that make the trade reasonable?

by Eric J. Thompson on Nov 15, 2011 9:53 AM CST reply actions

It was necessary. Not worth it unless he wins us a Super Bowl.

But it was necessary. Kyle Boller was not the answer. After the KC game we now hold him in slightly higher esteem than Purple Drank. Only slightly.
We would be angrier about the picks if we hadn’t gotten such good value in this year’s draft.

We did pay a lot for Palmer

but given the circumstances it was necessary. Things were on an upswing for our team and we were building up some positive momentum. After losing Campbell we risked losing not only the season but also all the progress we’ve made so far. We have a lot of young players on our team and their development would’ve been negatively affected.
At the end of the day I think that most fans are happy with Palmer’s performance so far. He is a significant upgrade over Campbell (remember that the Skins picked McNabb over Campbell) and he’s the best QB we’ve had since 2002. But only time will tell whether or not he is worth the price we’ve paid.

We’ll have the likes of Cedric Griffen -2.0, Asher Allen, Jamarca Sanford and Tyrell Johnson starting in the secondary. How awesome of a game do you expect Palmer to look?

No clue who it is.

It changes every so often. Hue Jackson hates fantasy guys.

Early in the year it looked like it was Moore. Then DHB popped up. Then against denver it was Ford, and now it was Moore again.

We made out like a bandit draft wise this year. Wizniewski, Barksdale, Taiwan Jones and Moore are all proving their worth. Chekwa and DVD were coming along before injuries killed them.

how's wizniewski doing? i was eyeballing him in round 2...but we went with a tight end.

He's doing great.

He was awesome at LG and has been similarly good at C (the position we originally drafted him for before re-signing Satele).

Our whole O-line has been far better than we thought. Their run blocking has to be up there with anyone in the league and they’ve done a solid job protecting our QB all year whoever it’s been back there – remember Jason’s injury came because he didn’t slide on a run.

So far it seems like Palmer favors Denarius Moore

But he has only started 2 games so far so things may be different on Sunday. Palmer is a prototypical Al Davis QB who has a strong arm and can make all the throws. He will stretch the field with his deep throws. But expect him to make some mistakes too because this will only be his 3rd start in a new offense after having 10 months off. He had 3 turnovers in his first start and 2 in the second one. We’re hoping that this will change as he gets more comfortable in our system.

Heyward-Bey was coming along nicely under Campbell

and seemed set for a big year, but now with Palmer he seems to have gotten lost in the mix. Despite his speed, he’s not a deep threat, but he was becoming a good short-pass-and-YAC guy. I still think we should be using him more rather than Housh.

Unless DMC’s injury is even more serious than advertised I don’t think he’s done. I suspect Hue wants to rest him while he can and not aggravate it – bring him back once the playoff squeeze becomes tighter.

you guys would be in first place in your division right now?

warcraft, you are my guitar hero !!!

by danny lloyd on Nov 16, 2011 11:35 PM CST up reply actions

To be honest we expected better

We swept our division last year but because of poor coaching (imo) we gave up some easy games that we should’ve won. We went 2-10 outside of our division and ended up being 8-8.
This year we finally had all the pieces in place and had a coach who can lead this team. We started the season 5-2 and had beaten good teams like the Texans and Jets before Campbell got injured. After his injury we dropped 2 give me games to KC and Denver. Had Campbell not been injured I have no doubt in my mind that we would’ve been 7-2 right now. But that’s how things go sometimes and you have to roll with them.
Anyhows, it’s a blessing to be back in the first place even with our record and we appreciate it nonetheless.

so unless he falls away badly this week (not ruling this out) he should do pretty well against yr guys.

Not having Jacoby Ford won’t help though.

In all honesty, I think it’ll be a competitive game, but I think the Raiders will win, 28-17.

Resident FSU fan here
What other skill position guys from them are getting drafted?

Counting only offensive starters his senior year, I’d say Rodney Smith, Bert Reed, Andrew Datko, Zebrie Sanders, and Rodney Smith (drafted by KC); so a fair amount. But I have to point out that a new offensive system was put in Ponder’s senoir year from Jimbo Fisher taking over for legendary coach Bobby Bowden. The season was a frustrating one with recievers running poor routes and our tandem of backs being inconsistent. Ponder had an amazing amount of responsibility in that system, routinely lining up confused recievers (I’m looking at you Bert Reed) and having alot of options at the LOS. It’s safe to say that without him, that offense would have falled apart.

Palmer should be OK as long as he doesnt have to throw a lot of times

The key to this game lies in the run game for us. If we can establish our run game and don’t have to rely on Palmer heavily then our offense can score points while keeping turnovers to a minimum. Similarly if you guys can run on us (we’ve been inconsistent in stopping the run) then it will open room for Ponder to pass against our banged up secondary.

I don't have a great deal of confidence in his consistency

but you guys don’t have a flash secondary so I think, if Thunder and Lightning (Bush and our rookie Taiwan Jones) can run the ball we’ll win. It’s gonna depend on us stopping Peterson though.

For some reason our run D seems to lift against top RBs (we contained Arian Foster in Week 5) but not show up against lesser/platoon guys (McGahee and Jesus H. Tebow two weeks ago, Law Firm and Stevan Ridley for the Pats in Round 4 had their way with us). So based on this trend I say we turn up for AP.

Yeah,

there’s not many “Fargo” accents here. When you get way up north like where I live, (2 hours from the Canadian border) you hear a few. But no where near as bad as that movie. And like you said, it’s kinda considered trashy to have a thick northern accent like that here. A few of those thickly accented people are my relatives, though. So that’s rather unfortunate.

Michael Bush

This guy is becoming too good not to be a No. 1 RB. I’m sure he has no issue being part of a 1-2 punch with DMC (when DMC is healthy) but is Bush a guy you foresee keeping around for the long haul? He’s worth a bunch and will eventually demand money that I would assume the Raiders won’t want to pay a backup RB.

And maybe I’m wrong by assuming they would rather keep DMC than Bush? Your thoughts?

Bush is a free agent after this season

and he would like to be a #1. He’ll probably get a good contract in the offseason because there are plenty of teams in need of a guy like him. We’d much rather keep DMC but we also need to have a good backup since DMC has an injury history. We’re hoping that rookie Taiwan Jones can pick up the slack next year.

Still, if we make noise Bush may stick around after all

The teams desperate for a run game are by and large not going to be contenders for a while, I think.

is your name dealing with Sage Rosencopter?

The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.

Well, look at what happened to nnamdi.

This Raiders team just up and got the most wins since 2003…..
Our RB finally broke out. Our D-line is playing great.

Nahhhhh……
I want cash and a shot at a championship.

Rest is history. Also, the same thing happened to Gallery and Miller. All three are on losing teams.

By noise I meant a multi-game playoff run.

True that

and I’d love for us to be able to keep him. But after seeing the buzz he’s created with teams that need running backs it feels like there’s going to be a pretty good market for him. We’ll have to pay him a lot of money just to be a backup and I wonder if that’s the kind of thing our new GM would want to do.

This, pretty much.

And maybe look for a power back to replace Bush. I do think it’s a possibility we franchise tag him though.

Irony

I’m sorry to go there, but you HAVE to laugh at the fact that the Vikings are enforcing a wand metal detector the week the Raiders come to town.

You know

It’s kind of funny that the Vikings don’t have too many fans that dress like that, considering what Vikings actually were, what with the whole pillaging, raiding, cold-blooded murdering and all.

I will give you guys one thing.

After The Autumn Wind, Skol Vikings is the best team song in the league.

The mate I mentioned in this post – we have a bet this week where the loser has to wear the other’s team undies and sing/recite the winning team’s song.

How many teams have won SBs running the option?

I’m in no real position to joke about him given that they beat us with that game plan – but they also got a punt return TD, Carson was still finding his way with our offense and we’ve historically had issues with running QBs given our man to man scheme.

I’d like to say punching bag but I don’t really have the right at this point.

Also, they started playing it in the second half.

It’s not easy to adjust the D that quickly. KC had a whole week to prepare and they couldn’t do it.

Okay, legit Raiders question

How’s your secondary without Nmadi Asmougha, or however it is you spell it? Are you guys susceptible to a mobile QB who throws a lot with rollouts and waggles?

It’d be better, but we’ve lost 3 starting CBs over the course of the season. We signed a safety named Ndukwe off the street – injured after a week. We haven’t had an injury report with less than 10 all year.

Routt isn’t terrible, but he’s not Nnamdi. Our pass rush has been able to make up for it a bit, but it’s not as good as we like.

As for the newcomer Lito Sheppard, he seems pretty good.

AAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry, he was with the Vikes last year. And he…was…horrid.

He worked well against the Chargers.

Seriously, I think our team bus driver is drunk 24/7. There’s no explanation besides that.

Passable, but not great, and wrecked by injuries.

We are susceptible to a QB who can make plays with his feet – see Tebow – but not just on rollouts and the like.

I've heard of it

It won’t happen. There is some merit to it but it won’t happen. Not only is he the public face of the franchise and one of the fan favorites but no team will take his contract in a trade.

by Amrius on Nov 20, 2011 2:58 AM CST up reply actions

I obviously can't speak for Vikings fans

but I can’t believe yr management would unless he asked for it. Especially after he only played one year of a new deal and his trade would probably cause a riot in the Twin Cities.
