Vikings Could Be Bringing An Old Friend Back For Secondary Help
Okay. . .one more football thing for now.
Prior to the 2010 season, the Vikings decided they needed help at the wide receiver position. They decided that help was going to come in the form of Greg Camarillo, who they acquired in a trade with the Miami Dolphins in exchange for cornerback Benny Sapp.
Well, Sapp was cut earlier this season by Miami, and according to the Twitter, Sapp might be on his way back.
Sapp isn't expected to be a miracle worker or anything, to be certain, but it would be hard for him not to provide an upgrade to the secondary at this point.

Sapp was last seen here:

Yet I’d still welcome him back at this point.

Can I buy a vowel...?? +1, Kluwe.
Can't hurt.
After all, Sapp has already had training this year on how to be a good teammate on a team just like ours.
Yeah, a 2-7 team.

My recollections of Sapp's play
Are not good. But any body with a pulse would help right now.
I don't remember him being bad...or not good.
My biggest problem with him was his dirty play. Late hits and leading with his helmet, but I remember being surprised that the Vikings traded him….even when they were kinda hurting for a CB.
Unless I’m remembering it wrong ?
We weren't looking bad at corner really at that time
We had Antoine Winfield playing at a high level, we had just picked up Lito Shepperd who was one or two years removed from being a Pro Bowl caliber player, had drafted a young stud named Cook and were expecting huge things from him already, Cedric Griffen was coming off a bad knee injury, and had both Asher Allen and Benny Sapp. Considering either Allen or Sapp were gonna be dime backs it seemed like a good idea at the time… But we all know how that turned out. Antoine continued to play at a high level, Griffen injured his other knee, Lito turned out to be a bum, Cook had knee and groin injuries all season, and Allen was proved to be no better than a nickel back who was forced into started duty.
Although I think that the Vikes got the better part of that trade
Cam hasn’t been great, but he’s been more productive then Sap was down in Miami. Heck just the fact that the Vikings didn’t see a need to cut him midseason shows that he’s more a success here than Sapp was down there.

That was 2008. In 2009 he'd managed to keep the personal fouls in check.
I was very sorry to see him leave the Vikings.

Well…ok so its not technically FRESH….but hey, at this point, how bad can it be?

Damn.
I want him just because of his name. Maybe the Vikings should start getting secondary help based on interesting names. That’d probably be a better plan than what we have now.
The fact that this is encouraging to me
makes me want to roll back into the fetal position.

I agree...
I embarrass myself with the same thought.
It could be worse...
They could say they’re bringing back Frank Walker to bolster our depth…
Help in Secondary...
I may get some flask about this but is D. SHARPER still avail?? cant hurt to bring him in for a look could it?? or did he sign with someone?
I think he had to have a knee surgery in the offseason
and I don’t believe he’s going to play anymore, but I don’t know. Just going off memory.

Dang
I saw the headline and thought the Vikes were bringing back Joey Browner. :(
Look at the
Brightside, we basically got Camirillo for free. Sort of.

That was true before today
if you recall Benny’s talents ;)
Sapp wasn't that bad, I thought.
Well, I guess they need someone back there. The Vikings should really think of drafting safety/corner first followed by o-line. Maybe even a trade down to get more solid late first round/early second pics.
At this point
They should bring Sapp back, waive Allen, Johnson, Frampton, and start scrounging other teams’ practice squads for any DBs they have roster spots for and rotate them into games. Its never to early to start finding talent.

He's better than nothing.
But yeah, MAJOR rebuilding now. I just wish they would admit it.

Sapp sucks
don’t bring back Bennie, he is awful. If a 2-7 team such as the Fins cut him what does that say about the Vikes if they add him to the roster? I think LF should go out on the field and show the DBs how he did it back when he played. One more point, LF was the DC with this team and those are his guys out there sucking all over the place. Makes me wonder. Ok, one more point; get rid of Coach Singletary. He was rotten with the 49ers and now he is showing his coaching ability with our LBs. I think they have lost a step and cannot cover my grandma out in the flat. And she has passed away several years ago.
It says
that we’re 2-7 as well and that the Vikings are even worse off in the secondary than the Dolphins are. There’s no reason to deny it anymore. We’re a legitimate 2-7 team. Just like the Dolphins.
OMG I HAVE AN IDEA AHHHH!!!!!!11!!!!!!
Let’s take a wide receiver who’s buried on the depth chart and CONVERT HIM TO A DB AND THEN WE CAN START HIM THE VERY NEXT WEEK AND HE’LL BE AWESOME AND GREAT
I’m sorry, what’s that? We already did that with Robert Tate and it was a disaster?
Sorry. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Some people just need a high five. In the face. With a chair.
Let's put Webb at CB.
He’s got the speed. He’s shifty. He’s a giant and will cover anyone else’s big man.
Kidding. But seriously, he got in at WR? Caught the only ball thrown his way. Get him to run a few slants and watch him split the Def.
White Horn Gold Pants
Actually...
that is what I thought we should do with berrian before we cut him. I mean, rarely was a ball caught that was thrown toward him. He’d have been a natural.
WIth the secondary, it's gotten to the point where

Some people just need a high five. In the face. With a chair.
Damn....
Now ive got to go watch that movie again…..
2011 Vikings, keeping the liquor industry in the green ALL YEAR LONG!
This team is a dumpster fire.
Might as well add a little Sapp to make it more interesting. Too bad Indy has us beat good in SFL.
Leigh Bodden
Why not bring him in as well for a tryout as well? The Pats have to pick up the majority of his salary….I haven’t heard of him signing anywhere, have I missed something?
Why does this always have to happen against a division opponent
seems we really love to suck it up when we play in our division
Oh, lovely.
Just what an undisciplined defensive unit needs. Another penalty-machine.
What do we have to lose??
Not that I’ve given this much thought and maybe it made more sense prior to Cook being arrested, but I thought as freakin’ talented as Joe Webb is, he could actually play the DB (safety or even corner) pretty well and give us a chance against some of these bigger TEs and receivers. But at this point, it’s probably not worth trying.
"Skol Vikings! Let's win this game Skol Vikings!
He has to "tryout"?
Right now, a retarded, chain-smoking, epileptic chimpanzee that is strung out on Mescalin and LSD would be an upgrade to our secondary. Why does he have to “tryout”? I can understand passing a physical… hell, the chimpanzee passed, why wouldn’t Sapp?

My problem with this is that he is 30 years old and turns 31 in January
I had posted in a couple of threads before this week’s games that I thought they should have grabbed Brandon Ghee off of the Bengals PS. This was before Winfield was hurt. They had an open roster spot and would have needed to keep Ghee for 3 weeks before releasing him if they wanted.
Ghee was drafted the same year as Cook and had pretty good draft marks. The reason why I like this approach is that Ghee has a chance to be on the team next year and for many years after that IF (and it could be considered a big IF) he would have played well.
I would rather the front office played some youngsters in the secondary to see who has the ability. Bringing in Sapp may help the defense some but I do not think it helps the team long term.
I think the approach should be to see what youngsters have what it takes and can possibly be starters.
I think it is prolonging the inevitable and that Sapp has a slim chance of being here next year. At least I hope that is the case.

a'ight
i’m for it if it means Asher will stop seeing the field for, like, ever.
i’m also kind of against it b/c it essentially means we still won’t see what we have in Brandon Burton.
at this point, we might as well start working in as many rookies as possible so we know what we have in the ‘potential’ pile, and know how to prioritize the ‘draft’ pile.
