Which College Players Are Future Vikings? Week 11 Review and Week 12 Primer

Another week in the books and it looks like a few teams may not be all that we thought they were going to be.

Stanford got worked by Oregon. Maybe Andrew Luck is not as good as they are making him out to be? Nah, he is that good. It is just that he had no WRs to throw the ball to and their defense is not that good. They miss Shane Skov and needed Delano Howell to be healthy. But Oregon still may have won the way they played. It is always difficult to evaluate Oregon's offensive players since they play speed offense. Some teams are trying to do that now in the NFL periodically (New England, Indy, & Saints come to mind) but who knows if it will be something that teams start to do more?

Boise State suffered another cruel loss I suppose. But if you have to win on a field goal vs TCU then maybe you are not that good after all?

I think the players we all like, we still like. Some are continuing to shine while others have tapered off a bit. But sometimes it could be the offenses that players play in as opposed to just being more talented. Justin Blackmon looks like the top WR again and it may not matter what offense he is playing in but his stats are inflated due to the fact that Oklahoma State throws the ball so much in that hurry up offense. Then you have a guy like Michael Floyd who may be just as talented (if not more when it comes to the NFL) but plays in a different style offense with a different and worse QB. Marvin McNutt is another WR who is playing in a different (shall I say pro style) offense compared to Blackmon. Switch them and what would their numbers be? This is one thing you have to consider. But it does not take away from the players individual performance. It is just something to consider.

I think the Heisman should be pretty open right now. I do not think Luck is a slam dunk by any means. So who elsle could it be? Brandon Weeden could be the guy now. Maybe Trent Richardson will sneak leapfrog them if he has a couple of monster games? Unfortunately for him they scheduled Georgia Southern (who? - shameful) and then have Auburn. Also, they have virtually no chance at playing in the SEC title game either. Weeden gets to play Oklahoma but they do not have a championship game this year. He needs to do well vs Oklahoma.

Stanford has to play Cal and Notre Dame which they should win but you never know. With Oregon likely to play in the PAC 12 championship game unless they lose to USC or Oregon State (not likely), Luck has to do very well in his last two games.

I think LaMichael James deserves more attention. He has two more yards rushing than Richardson and has played in two less games. I think that Case Keenum deserves more attention too. He is playing outstanding. he still has to play SMU and Tulsa and then possibly Southern Mississippi on the C-USA championship game. If he continues on his current pace and plays well against these tree teams then I think I would probably vote for him depending on what Weeden does.

My dark horse candidate is Luke Kuechly. He is a tackling machine! Of course he will never win it but he is on another level.

I am going to list some prospects and highlight some that I like as future Vikings and then preview week 10 best match ups ...

Here is an after week ten mock with two compensatory picks. I am hoping for one compensatory pick to be at the end of the third round and the other at the end of the seventh.

The Vikings are set to pick 5th according to this site http://www.thehuddlereport.com/Free/draftorder.shtml. I expect that the Vikings will end up right in the 4 to 8 range.

Also the Vikings traded their 6th round pick to Washington for McNabb. I am not sure if it is a 5th. They also are set to receive New England's 7th round pick for the Moss trade, the Giant's probable 7th round pick for the Sage Rosenfels & Darius Reynauld trade, and Cleveland's probable 6th round pick for the Jayme Mitchell trade.

So here goes a draft with just one trade.

The Vikings trade the #5 overall pick (1700 points) to the Seattle Seahawks for the #11 (1250 points) & the #43 (470 points).
I think Seattle will want to jump ahead of Washington to get Matt Barkley.

Cleveland could want to jump to #5 as well to select Trent Richardson. It is clear they are not going to extend Peyton Hillis so they will need a back. Since they have two first round picks they may be interested in moving up too. But for them to give up #10 & #42 would be 1780 points and the Vikings are not interested in having to give up their 4th.

So I think the trade with Seattle is close enough.

I expect that the Vikings should be aggressive during free agency specifically trying to sign a WR or two and trying to sign a top CB and safety. I like Pierre Garcon, Mario Manningham, and DeSean Jackson at WR. I think it will be hard to get a top WR to come here. I like Brandon Carr, Tracy Porter, Terrell Thomas, and Richard Marshall at CB. Finnigan and Grimes would be nice too but I think it will be hard to attract them too. I like Thomas DeCoud, Tyvon Branch, Dashon Goldson, Courtney Greene, and Michael Griffin at safety.
