Percy at RB???

I was over at nfl.com and seen that one of the writers thinks that the Vikings should move Percy to RB to complement Peterson. I know he played a little runningback in college but I dont think that would be a good idea. Here's what he said

"The Vikings need to move receiver Percy Harvin to running back, full time. He is explosive with the ball in his hands and does all the things a great back needs to do. He is the perfect complement to Adrian Peterson"

So, should the Vikings move Percy to backup Adrian in a Chester Taylor type role, or leave him at wide recevier??

If peterson is out vs the Falcons,

He should get 15 touches, but if Peterson is good to go on a consistent basis, no way. We need someone running routes that can demand respect from the safeties to (hopefully) open up some longer routes.

You're right, but...

Percy shouldn’t be the #1 receiving threat having to demand respect from the safeties. He’s more of a slot receiver, getting the ball quickly on short routes and then being explosive in open space. But we have no real #1 big body deep threat receiver so Percy gets far too much attention to be able to excel from the position he’s been put in all year. Putting him at running back isn’t going to help his ribs any, but seeing how offensively challenged we are right now, I’m happy with any touches Percy gets at any position until we have a better #1 receiver to free him up on his routes.

PS I’ve been reading this site for awhile now and finally got around to signing up and posting. Love the site and all the fan input!

Seems like Harvin takes a bunch of hand offs even when he's playing WR.

However, putting a guy with bruised ribs at running back seems like a bad idea to me. Gerhart and Booker are fine as backups.

Percy is our best player

Put him at RB, WR, kick/punt returns, and CB

Reduce turnovers, reduce personal fouls, shoot better, win.

I don't think the position he is listed as

is really that important, however he is a wideout I don’t imagine he would appreciate being a full time running back

He ruan the ball out of a spread in college

you utilize him in motion out of the slot and get him the ball and he will tear you up. We know waht he can do when he runs but not out of a straight backfield.
Just bring him out of the slot for a run more often -it works

Harvin is one of those guys

That can play both receiver and RB. We need to take advantage of the dynamic playmaking Harvin brings to the table and use him in a variety of sets. I don’t mean full time RB, but I at least want him taking some of the carries instead of Gerhart taking them all on Sunday. Harvin is a lot more effective than Gerhart.

You can play Harvin anywhere you want

He is fast, powerful, and extremely dynamic. We should keep him where he is now: listed as a WR in the slot and bring him in the backfield sometimes to run.

Why is everyone clamoring to find a replacement for AP?

Look, the season is pretty much over. Now is the time to give Gerhart the rock and let him do what he does.

He is the kind of guy who is simple, reliable and solid. He is not nearly going to be as interesting as AP, but he runs well and has good hands. Let’s see what we have in him.

The should be using Harvin any way they can. They haven’t done nearly enough to force defenses to account for Harvin. For instance, I would like to see a 5 wr set, forcing a dime defense, motion Harvin into the backfield and allow him to find a hole.

Just saw this.

Nice compliment to what I just wrote, nice blurb. Personally I wouldn’t move Harvin to RB, at least full-time. We’re quite solid at RB… with AP in the lead, and Gerhart/ Booker behind him, I think we’re all right there. Our WR situation is the exact opposite. We’ve got Percy Harvin… and, uh… Michael Jenkins… some other guys… I guess…

If we were loaded at WR and didn’t have Gerhart around, then it would make sense. But with the team’s offense as it is, I wouldn’t do this.

Dear Offensive Line... (follow Game Threads for the rest).

Maybe increase his RB load but don't make hima full-time RB

He’s already nursing injuries so I wouldn’t want him pounding the pigskin as a full-time RB. Percy is dangerous in space. With AP out this week (assuming he is out), I’d like to see Percy line up as RB a bit more than usual and run a combo package of inside, outside, reverses, screens, and passes out of the backfield. However, he also is our most dangerous receiver, so I’d keep his RB touches to roughly 10-15. That’s only because Adrian is out though. Against OAK he had 5 carries and a few screens. I’d like to see more of that against ATL because he can break one at any point.
