Evening all,
I've been watching the NFL for about 2 years now and i think i'm getting a handle on most of the basics. One of the things i really enjoy is all the chat about the draft, but one thing i am really struggling with is some of the terminology used in relation to players and positions. If you can bear it, please could you have a look at some of the thingys after the leap and help enhance my knowledge?
Ok, so you made it this far, thanks for your patience....here then is a list of things i don't quite get - in no particular order....Defence - whats the difference between 'Dime' and 'Nickel'?
W/R - I thought these were fast guys with good hands who caught the ball....so what's the difference between a 'slot' guy and a 'route' guy and any of the other terms used and what is the difference in skill set required for each one?
O/L - I thought their job was to keep the QB upright and to stop the D/L from beating him up. If that's the case, what's the difference in skill set between someone being good against a pass rush or a run stuffer?
D/L - i thought their job was to try and beat up the QB (or the RB). if that's the case, once again what's the difference in skill set between a pass rusher and a run stuffer?
FS/SS - what's the difference here between the 2?
For what it's worth, my preferences for this draft (based purely on ignorance) would be to get the O/L fixed first - no matter how many picks that takes, be it one, two or three....then hope to get McNutt (I have no idea if he's any good, but i just love the name...there's too much fun to be had with that) and then fix/improve CB through FA....i'm not that interested beyond the third round to be honest with you 'cos from what i've seen it's highly unlikely that your gonna get a high quality consistent starter after then....i know it can happen, but it's probably more likely not to happen.
