According to Adam Schefter he is. This has yet to be confirmed by the Vikings beat writers, but most of the time Schefter is accurate with these kind of reports.

Stay tuned for more about what looks like the end of a very forgettable era.

Damn.

Would LOVE to face him. It would be nice to have 3 wins. On the other hand, at this point, I’m almost more interested in the draft pick situation… but not enough to want to get swept in our division.

I wonder what happened.

He seemed like a classy guy to me. He had a tough start to the season, but it’s not like the Vikings have improved since he was benched. I wonder if they are making room for other moves or giving him a chance to get on another squad that might use him this season. At least Webb is now assured of getting the 2nd string reps.

What happened?

He was traded by Philly because they knew he was on his last legs. McNabb hasn’t been McNabb for at least 3 seasons. He’s basically a guy impersonating McNabb at this point.

I think it was a matter of respect

a la how analysts feel the Orton cut was Elway giving some grace to a fellow QB. I think McNabb saw how many teams could use a QB right now for their playoff push, requested a release to see if he could get picked up, and Frazier granted it due to their mutual respect.

Bah if a team needs a QB get Favre!

I’m suprised the Bears aren’t down there right now.. He’s played for the rest of us… If he hits the Lions when Stafford gets injured (again) he’ll have another record under his belt!

The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.

by Grime on Dec 1, 2011 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

I doubt any team would look at him.

The Colts apparently never did, despite Irsay cracking a joke at one point on Twitter about it. And when Seifert mentioned it for the Texans on ESPN, the other analysts pretty much roundly mocked him for it.

I doubt Favre has been really preparing for any comeback. He’s probably down relaxing in Hattisburg, thankful he’s not behind our O-line anymore. The almost complete silence from him is, IMO, deafening.

by KJSegall on Dec 1, 2011 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

Silence?

People stopped asking him the question, that’s all. Ed Werder stopped sleeping on his cough and asking him if he’s coming back every single day. It’s not like Favre was calling up radio shows or writers or bloggers and actively giving information. Those people just kept asking the question. If Favre had a mic in his face and you asked him if he wanted to play with Foster and Johnson on the Texans, with the #1 ranked defense, what do you think he’d say? I think he might be inclined to say, “nah, i don’t think i’m ready to play anymore, but who knows, I never count anything out.”

Classy move...

…. by the Vikings. I agree it was about respect. McNabb didn’t do much for this team, but he’s been in the league long enough to have earned some respect. He’s from Chicago, so he probably would want to play for the Bears, but I wonder if they want him. He’ll have just about the same time in the pocket as he did in here… and he certainly wasn’t unloading very quick here. His upside is not turning the ball over and with the Bears D, that might be what they want.

by Vrooman on Dec 1, 2011 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

He has tremendous DOWNside for the Bears

He’s never been in anything close to a Mike Martz system. I mean this is a little bit of respect: he was never considered the most intelligent of QBs. I don’t think this old dog can be taught any new tricks. He would struggle with the system.

It has to do with McNabb no longer having anything to give to this team

He’s riding the pine; Ponder can get mentored by the coaches(not sure how much McNabb helped anyways); there’s other QB positions opening up due to injury. If we keep him around, he might not stay too happy when he sees other guys getting picked up on teams that can still make the playoffs(HOU/CHI) and are desperate for a QB.

Yeah, it's pretty much all but official now. If McNabb wanted to play anymore, he needed to request a cut.

Especially with the situation in Houston happening. He can be thrusted onto a winning team and start if they deem fit. He’s either going to go to the Bears, the Texans, or the Cowboys, according to NFL.com and ESPN.

agreed

I think the timing just proves that McNabb was biding his time waiting for an injury so he would be “needed” elsewhere. Otherwise I think he stays in Minny for the remainder of the season.

That's what I'm thinking,

the Bears are the frontrunners according to NFL.com, considering he grew up there and would love to play for them. It makes sense, too, giving him another run at the playoffs. If the injuries hadn’t taken place, I think he’s a mentor for the rest of the year. He’ll be a good pickup for someone.

He's a terrible fit in Chicago

Mike Martz is going to go crazy with him as his QB.
Martz to Lovie: “You’re telling me that’s all the better he can throw? Why did we pick up this bum? Hanie can at least get the ball to him.”

Lovie: “Ok, we’ll just keep running Forte”(against 9 in the box)

This means 2 things:

1) Zygi wanted to save some money. Fine by me.

2) He wasn’t doing much to help Ponder. Whether this is because McNabb wasn’t helping or Ponder didn’t need any help isn’t clear, but the team wouldn’t cut a veteran QB if they felt he was helping out the kid.

Disagree.

If no team picks him up we’re still on the hook for the remainder of his salary, so it’s a gamble in terms of saving money.

And I don’t think it was so much of a locker-room issue as McNabb wanting to see if one of the many playoff- potential teams that are without their starting QB would take a stab with him, and Frazier respecting him enough to grant a release.

Dear Offensive Line... (follow Game Threads for the rest).

Daily Norseman

by KJSegall on Dec 1, 2011 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

I’d guess that McNabb wouldn’t have requested the release if he didn’t have some assurance that the Texans/Bears/Chiefs/Golden Gophers would pick him up, so I doubt it was much of a gamble.

And while Frazier is the kind of guy who probably would give a guy his walking papers if he respected him enough, I don’t think he’d do it if he was still an asset to the team. He’d catch some serious hell for doing that.

by Purpledork on Dec 1, 2011 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with Segall on this one

Sure if he gets claimed then Zigi does save some money, but that is merely a bonus.

To your second point, McNabb was not going to see the field again this year. Frazier is the ultimate players coach. He knows how much it must suck for McNabb to ride the pine. At this point even if Ponder went down (God forbid) the fan base would rather see Webb get a shot before McNabb. It’s a win win for everone.

I do believe that the only reason McNabb asked for the release now is because his agent feels that one of those QB needy teams will pick him up (Texans/Bears).

by NMVike on Dec 1, 2011 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with all of this.

My only issue is how a team could possibly think he gives them a better chance. Granted, if Hanie stays as the turnover machine then they may need to make a change. Mcnabb doesn’t fit that system. He doesn’t know the Martz system. Houston is more possible. Better defense, better run game, better weapons. McNabb could play decently throwing deep to Andre Johnson and handing off to Foster. Who knows, maybe it could work.

hopefully he finds work someplace else. he’d played himself out of a job with the vikes. he wouldn’t have been back in 2012.

will the bears put a waiver in for him? who knows. a team would really have to be desperate to take that contract on. if he clears waivers, someone will sign him and quickly. too many injuries at qb this season.

This is why Joe Webb should do all he can to stay a QB

Look how much money McNabb made this year for what the Vikings received in return.

Look at Sage Rosenfels and Charlie Batch still receiving pay checks.

I know that he MAY help the Vikings at WR IF he can learn to run routes and catch better. But the chances of him having a long career as a WR are slimmer than as a QB.

I would want to get paid for as long as I can most of all.

I was off by a couple weeks but called it in August.

Back on the day of his signing, when i was getting grief from the rose colored glasses crowd i predicted:

1.McNabb would be horrible
2.He would lose and lose ugly.
3.He would be benched by week 6
4.He would be released by week 10

Now i know those last two may not be right on the money….i cant remember when he was benched officially, but I was pretty darn close. It was a terrible decision to sign him, i said it then and im stating it now. All it did was slow the rebuilding process and suck the life out of the team. They are not as bad as their record, with Ponder at QB. You give him those games he sat and he may be making even bigger strides, at this point.

I hate having to say i told you so, but i got so much grief for trying to prepare everyone for what was going to happen, i cant help it.

The Vikes have some serious needs at O-line, Defensive Back, and WR, but the team isnt beyond hope. I feel better knowing McNabb’s bad juju is no longer haunting the sideline.

Here’s to the future.

If anyone picks up McNabb for anything but an experienced clip board holder/emergency mop up guy, they are nuts. I bet someone signs him though….and i bet he gets one more shot at starting. Somehow, he will still be overrated enough to get a look.

They might need to retire the #5 just so no one gets McNabb curse on them.

Nice call

McNabb in play in game 1 vs Chargers showed the formula of how to beat him. QB pressure all day long takes him out of play (aka Mr 39). The viking’s front 4 was weaker on offense and disrupted what McNabb could do. Ponder showed more ‘escapability’ and ability to extend the play. Webb has already proven that. Too many 3 plays and out doomed McNabb’s ability to get any progress. Multiple 2nd half failures with a halftime lead simply gave opponents a ‘gift of confidence’ that the vikings were beatable no matter what the score was at half time. Rarely a weak front offense 4 gives a QB the time and what it needs to be successful.

The games were winnable in the first 4-5 games of the season. Football games are 60 minutes long for a reason. Tebow is getting it done in last quarter or 5 minutes of the game. Vikings looked beat and out of energy to close it out, and the QB position is responsible for driving that energy. We were just not seeing it from McNabb unlike Ponder and Webb.

by Lunchpail on Dec 2, 2011 1:03 AM CST via mobile reply actions

I wish more of the comments here were like this

He didn’t do all that well, but he also wasn’t bad. Our record reflected a general problem with virtually every aspect of our team. However McNabb gets blamed for the record under his watch. Now that Ponder has led the team to a similar result after his starts, it’s the rest of the team that is the problem. McNabb’s a vet, Ponder’s a rookie. I get it. It just seems to me that McNabb took a lot more abuse than he deserved. This is a bad team, and McNabb wasn’t the reason it is a bad team. I’m glad we benched him, because I wanted us to see what our first round pick could do.

I never really cared much about McNabb before he arrived at the Vikings. However, he strikes me as being a nice guy who did okay under the circumstances. Now that McNabb is gone, I hope he does well somewhere else.
