Ask a Saints Fan

Hello to all Vikings fans. Grumps from Canal Street Chronicles here.

Our two teams, depending on who you speak to, have formed a bit of a out of divisional rivalry.

I was supposed to be at the game this coming Sunday, but due to family committments had to sell my tickets to a good friend (who also happens to be a Vikings fan). So it appears that I will have to settle for coming over to the Daily Norseman and speak with you fans this way (as opposed to in the stands and in the beer lines).

Will AP run wild? Will Ponder bounce back against a Saints secondary that allows a tonne of yards through the air? Debate these topics and more, right here!

Feel free to ask anything you care to about the Saints, make predictions for the game, or trash talk as you see fit.

Someone will be around to answer your questions.

This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

the only thing

for sure is that Drew’s throwing arm will be tired by the end of the day with our secondary the way it is.

Try to learn from others mistakes because there just is not enough time in this world to make them all your self

So will Ponders

We give up yards galore. Granted the D, while not being opportunistic in creating turnovers, definitely has been tightening up when it comes to the red zone. Minimizing overall damage.

Here we go:

It’s quite likely that Ponder will play next week since he didn’t seem that hobbled during the denver game, but I don’t think he’ll light your defense up because AD will be back. If AD is 100%, they will be going to him early and often to get him readjusted and reincorporated, and I think he will have a monster game. Ponder will just be a drive extender on third downs. Expect a couple rookie mistakes by Ponder though. He tends to test himself by throwing into tight coverages often and throwing cross-body, so he could have a couple INT’s to go with a couple TD’s.

This leads me to my question:

You say that your defense gives up a tonne of yards through the air, but I hate the YPG statistic with a passion. Look at the Packers’ defense. They are almost last in YPG allowed, yet they are very opportunistic on bad plays by the opposing offense and almost never drop interceptions. Can the same be said about your defense?

Also, who will be lining up opposite of Jared Allen?

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

Well...

Lately we have been pretty decent against the run. Yesterday we kept CJ2K to 23 yards on 11 carries, the week before we kept Detroits RB’s to 62 on 18 carries, Giants to 69 on 18 carries. Granted, that being said, I think that if AP is healthy, he is a beast and will be successful.

We will make Ponder look good. Trust me. The opportunistic D that the Saints had a few years back has disappeared. Interceptions are far and few between. If anything our secondary has illustrated repeatedly why none of them could ever be subbed in as an emergency WR.

Opposite Jared Allen will be our Left Tackle Jermon Bushrod. Ever since the Rams game where we crapped all over ourselves, the O-line has been pretty good at keeping Drew on his feet. Hopefully Allen doesnt add to that 100+ career sack total this coming weekend.

I like Hamburgers!

I feel you, we haven't had a single INT since week 5

Since Ponder’s been at the helm, we’ve been getting AD more involved in the passing game, downfield and on screens. How are your LB’s when it comes to picking up screens and how quick are they?

Could not agree with you more Grumps. The interceptions and fumbles are not there. Look at the 2011 Packers this season. Almost identical as the 2009 Saints. Giving up too many yards and points but getting the takeaways as well

And don’t forget, Webb will be added in the mix as we struggle against QB’s who can run the ball. And let me add this. This 2-11 Vikings team is not as bad everyone thinks. They’ve been on the fence all season long. If you look at their game scores, with the exception of a few games, they’ve been close. And almost beat the Packers

You guys will have the chance to run away with this game.

That chance may come early, or may not come until the 3rd quarter. If we’re true to form we’ll manage to stop that from happening, make you think we might just actually beat you, and then lose.

by Jshore on Dec 12, 2011 4:11 PM CST reply actions

What's up Jshore. Been a while

We can run away with this game if we’re clicking. The thing that scares me is the Saints tend to overlook teams with bad records. (AKA Rams) As I mentioned above, you guys have been right on the fence in very close games including against the Packers. For a 2-11 team, you guys have been close many games. My hope is that the Saints don’t make that same mistake as they did when they overlooked the Rams. On any given Sunday, anyone can be beat.

I think this game will be a lot closer than people think. Plus we’ve been a bit shaky on the road.

Our offense is like the chick you see walking through the mall

Damn, she has a fine ass. Her legs are perfect and her hips are swingin back and forth. She turns around and you walk your eyes up her delicately and then… BOOM!! Butter face. So bad, even Country Crock’s never seen seen this kind of butter. Observing her even closer, you see she has giant, veiny hands and brown fingernails. To cap it, she bends over and her wig falls off. Overall, she’s got some great parts on her, but alot of messed up ones. C- at best. And our defense is the mall girl’s older, much uglier sister who currently is sporting a wheelchair. Definately an D. Overall, I think this team is exactly as bad as advertised.

Lol. Interesting observation. You definitely have some good players on your team. Ponder, Webb, AD, Harvin, Allen. Get some good drafts in the off season, O’line D backs, A receiver or 2 you’ll be back in contention again. You’ll go from on the fence to over the fence.

What are the rumors about Leslie Frazier? Will a new head coach be replaced?

Not a chance

You can’t fire a coach for losing with a rookie QB and a new offensive system put in place. At the very least, he should get a year more for his young QB to improve and for his new offensive coordinator to fully put his system in. However, some people are calling for his head (mostly uninformed people) because of the defense being so poor when he’s a former DB, and bad playcalling even though that falls upon Bill Musgrave’s shoulders.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

Heya Jricky...

Definitely been a while since we both tried to be voices of reason ;)

I think your boys have the best shot at taking down the Packers, but you’ll need that D to make some plays. Our team really is as bad as our record. We do have more talent than you would expect to see at 2-11, and at times that makes things interesting. Still, by the final gun there is no way we win unless Brees and Payton pull an all-nighter and show-up sweating liquor.

The Packers are loaded! We would have our best shot, but it would have to be a mistake free game. We could have had them opening night. We gave them a good fight.

Question for Saints:

Which QB would you like to face? Ponder or Webb ?

by VikesFanSince1967 on Dec 12, 2011 8:38 PM CST reply actions

To be honest

Webb scares me. For the reason he can run and scramble very well. Saints always seem to struggle against QB’s who can run. Cam gave us fits, Josh Freeman at Tampa, and Locker yesterday.

Ponder however can scramble too. He can also throw the deep ball very well. Once he gets a lot more protection in the pocket, he will be a very dangerous QB. For a rookie year, he’s done pretty well.

I spent 8 years trying to reach him...and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply...Evil.

Dr. Sam Loomis Aka (Donald Pleasence)

by Jricky70 on Dec 12, 2011 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Ponder is very fast

Faster than Vick, slower than Newton, but still very fast. If your corners can lock down Percy Harvin (because no one else can create space worth a damn), he’ll probably have a couple of scrambles down the right sideline for big gains like we’ve seen in previous weeks. I have no faith in our O-Line though, so you guys could have three or fours sacks to negate these scrambles.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

Does the OC/Coach encourage Ponder to take off (like Cam, Vick, & Tebow are)?

Or, do they strongly encourage him to stay in the pocket and pass?

-

I’d rather face Ponder because we have more tape on him.

by Dan Kelly on Dec 13, 2011 8:03 AM CST up reply actions

You won't see any designed runs

unless Webb is brought into the game. You may see a few designed roll outs by Ponder though, but only if our line is playing very poorly. Pretty much the only time you’ll see Ponder take off is if he’s about to get crushed by a free rusher, especially since he has a mild hip injury that may not be 100% healed by game-time.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

Vick has definitely lost a step since he came into the league, but I’m still not sure Ponder could outrun him, even less so if that hip is still sore.

by Jshore on Dec 12, 2011 11:28 PM CST up reply actions

Not with the sore hip.

But I remember A LOT of amazing scrambles from Ponder at Florida State. I’d say he’s right there with Vick nowadays. Remember this scramble? Ponder was just trotting there.

by Alittlemore_cowbell on Dec 13, 2011 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

Ponder's quicker than I thought but Vick is still arguably the fastest QB in the league. He may not run sub 4.3 anymore but Vick still easily has 4.4 speed.

Newton’s was 4.59 at the combine , Webb’s runs a 4.4 or better depending on the source, and Ponder ran a 4.65 at the combine. Vick is likely still as fast as Webb even with a lost step or two.

by CanadianViking on Dec 13, 2011 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

Well,

Newton’s low 40 is 4.48 and Ponder’s is 4.57, as in, the fastest they’ve been timed by a machine (the combine does it by hand). To me, it just looks like Ponder is faster now than he was in college, and I watched every game of his college career. I don’t think Vick can run anywhere near a 4.4 anymore. Maybe around a 4.55. Ponder is surprisingly quick though. Maybe around a 4.55.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

by Alittlemore_cowbell on Dec 13, 2011 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

Vick's low was in the high 4.2 range. Obviously he's not that fast anymore but I guarantee he's still noticeably faster than Ponder.

I’m not saying Ponder isn’t fast, he’s way faster than I thought, but Vick is the fastest QB the NFL has ever seen and even with a lost step he’s still a legit 4.4. I don’t know if you’ve watched Vick play much the last couple of years but the only QB I’ve seen that’s got similar speed is Webb. I will say that Vick’s first season in Philly out of prison he looked like a high 4.5 guy and I thought he was done but his burst and speed have returned since then. The fact that we’re even comparing Ponder’s speed to guys like Vick, Newton, and Webb speaks volumes about how quick Ponder is.

by CanadianViking on Dec 13, 2011 6:22 PM CST up reply actions

Though I doubt that he is in the 4.4 range anymore,

you’re right. Ponder is very quick, laterally and down the field. I have a feeling, if these Saints’ fans are right about their LB’s, that Ponder will be scrambling a lot this game instead of taking chances throwing while rolling out.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

by Alittlemore_cowbell on Dec 13, 2011 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

One thing you’re right about is that Ponder does have a great shuttle time that’s comparable to players that run a faster 40 than him. I think my favorite part of Ponder’s game is that he’s got great footwork when he throws on the run. He seems very comfortable and well-balanced in the open field when his feet are moving and I hope he learns to translate that same comfort and balance to his pocket passing.

by CanadianViking on Dec 13, 2011 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

Faster than Vick?

How can that be? Ponder is surprisingly mobile, but I didn’t hear anyone mention that he’s a burner. And Newton isn’t that fast from what I remember. I feel all that I think I knew has been turned upside down in some alternate universe. Live and learn I suppose. Are you sure about the Vick/Ponder speed comparison though?

Truth is...

…I haven’t watched Vick (other than last year’s game) in a long time. I thought you were referring to Vick the rookie. My mistake.

I saw the clip. Ponder is quick, but I think he looked particularly fast in that clip because he was being chased by an enormous defensive lineman. Typically those lineman are not very fast, but I would probably run even faster if chased by one. :-)

What's the biggest issue you guys need to address going into the postseason?

Thanks for doing this!

OLB's same as the last 20 years

But we also need some DT’s those 2 big fat a** ones we signed in the offseason aren’t working out

by mississippisaintsfan on Dec 13, 2011 5:45 AM CST up reply actions

Disagree…they’re doing their job just fine…which is to mainly hold the line of scrimmage. They’re supposed to take up space so the LB’s can come and clean up. But guess what….our LB’s are so bad they make the DTs look bad even when the DTs are doing their job.

You can have that lard ass Ayodele back.

he sucks.

he may be netter than our loveable lard ass, Mr Rogers Neighborhood. (He’s the whole neighborhood.)

I’d like to have Anthony Hargrove back, if you can convince the Seahawks to let him go, that would be mighty kind of you.

by Dan Kelly on Dec 13, 2011 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

Bahahahaha.

If the Seahawks so much as overhear us talk about a player regarding contracts, they sign him to a ridiculous contract. We’re not the guys you should be asking for help there.

lol.. oh ok, thanks.

Were you guys looking at DT Mebane too? We were before we signed Abreyo Franklin.

This goes back to when we poisoned pilled them for Hutch (our HOF LG)

and then they proceeded to take and pay every receiver we never wanted…

yeah, Hutch and Rice… lol

Hutch worked out for them though… expensive, but he played well.

Well, look at where Rice is now. And they also took Tarvaris Jackson off of your hands…that was nice of them.

Nate Burelson as well

But sending them TJ was kinda cruel in my mind.

OLB (from free agency)

and I say we need another CB (from free agency) too.

I’m not sure what we need two years from now, so I can’t talk about the draft.

How about we get 2 in 1 like in Von Miller.

Lack of pressure from the front seven

What’s the biggest issue you guys need to address going into the postseason?

Staying healthy is the key. And hopefully tighten up on defense. Still giving up too many big plays. And that can haunt any team in the playoffs.

Fantasy Football Question

For the past few seasons your running back rotation has been completely in-explainable. For the love all of a fantasy football fans, what is the logic behind the usage of Saints RB? In other words, what are the roles? Is there a clearly defined “between the 20s” guy, “3rd down” guy and “goal-line” guy? Do they just trade off posessions? Does Sean Payton just go with whomever is effective…aka…the “hot hand”?

Who’s the running back to own? Mark Ingram (when healthy), Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, or Chris Ivory?

SKOL Vikings!

Sproles is the guy to go with

He is the only one you can count on to get touches

Very good question. There’s no particular featured back. We have a mixture of very good RB’s who rotate in the game for designed runs, screens, passes etc. It confuses me too lol.
last season we had none of those guys. Pierre and Ivory were hurt. Sproles was a huge upgrade from Reggie. (About freaking time). And Ingram is certainly good in the mix.

I agree, it is a very good question.

It sounds like you don’t know the answer, which would mean that if Sean Payton does he apparently isn’t telling.

by Jshore on Dec 12, 2011 11:38 PM CST up reply actions

I think SP picks a guy he think is going to get the best matchups/opportunities and puts him in a few more packages than the other guys. But, there is no guy that is the featured RB.

Sproles will get some catches and some touches, and get some punt returns too.

If you get points for receptions and for punt/kickoff returns, Sproles is the no-brainer pick from the Saints backfield. The rest are a crap-shoot.

Sproles hands down

If your league rewards for PPR and return yardage it is a no brainer. He is second on the team in receptions. Plus he is the most elusive in my opinion. Has the highest probability for breaking a long one.

Well, if you go back to last season and look at our RB situation leading up to the debasle at Qwest field, you can see why Payton is hesitant to give a large load to any one of our RBs. Personally, I think Ingram can be a great workhorse and carry the load, but Payton wantsh him to be healthy for the long haul.

Obligatory Brees question. Sorry

Whats the general feeling on Brees getting almost no media attention from the national circuits in favor or Rodgers and St. Tebow despite literally having a historic, record breaking season?

We all know the media just loves Rogers and the pack

Drew will Quietly break Marinos record this year and will get a little credit
But if we beat the Packers for the NFC championship he will get his due
And I think he knows that
I like Tebow but the media treats him like a side show instead of the 1st round draft choice he is
He is doing what he is paid to do should be a non-story

It is par for the course…Brees was robbed of the MVP by Manning one year and never really gets the pub that he should. He has worked on his game every season and you can tell when you watch him play.

Who is your most hated player?

And what is your worst position overall? For the Vikings, I’d have to say Charlie Johnson (LT) is my most hated player and safety is our worst position currently.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

by Alittlemore_cowbell on Dec 13, 2011 4:35 PM CST via mobile reply actions

We have a few that various groups dislike their playing abilities…

- some people dislike our LT Bushrod (who’s actually done pretty well this year)
- some people dislike our OLB Shanle (who’s actually done ok this year)
- some people dislike our third CB (who plays #21 CB when Porter was our or resting) Patrick Robinson

I’m in the third camp… he is a revolving door. His WR is almost always open – 8 out of 10 times… including run plays where the WR is a decoy… if the QB would pull the ball back and throw to that WR, he’d be open.

You’ll see that number either on the ground after a missed tackle or, more likely, just chasing down his WR from behind at least 2 times per game – for very big plays for your offense.

(Since Stu is banned he won’t be able to fill your heads with excuses and apologizes for him. He sucks!)

PS. He’s gotten two interceptions this year… one of them is BECAUSE he was 10 yards out of position on his WR and the ball was thrown HORRIBLY by Cam Newton. As long as Ponder/Webb can get it withing 5 yards of the WR, he’ll have a chance to complete the pass.

-

And, worst overall position… besides third corner… DT or OLB.

by Dan Kelly on Dec 13, 2011 4:51 PM CST up reply actions

Ah. In other words, Robinson is better than all of our DBs.

I mean, his guys are only open 8/10 times? That’s called good coverage ’round these parts.

by Mebera on Dec 13, 2011 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

Interesting...

Both of our RB’s love going through the middle of the line, and both have the same “run your ass over” running style. Are your DT’s easily moved off the line, are they poor tacklers, and how well do they get pressure on the opposing QB?

Assuming, of course, that Peterson isn't back yet.

But AP prefers running the hell away from our O Line before going downfield…

by Mebera on Dec 13, 2011 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

If our line isn't getting any push, yeah

but if their DT’s aren’t getting any push, Peterson and Gerhart will pound the middle of the line relentlessly.

by Alittlemore_cowbell on Dec 14, 2011 8:33 AM CST up reply actions

There's just something gratifying about Gerhart SMASH.

Watching multiple linebackers get flattened in single plays is always priceless, even if it winds up being lost yardage because our line didn’t block anyone…

by Mebera on Dec 14, 2011 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

They’ve been playing better as of late…especially last week. If Rogers and Franklin start again, it might be a long day for the running game.

Will Herring

The only OLB we brought in from free agency, was supposed to take over the WILL, and has just flat out sucked. His only play so far this year was an interception against the Giants, albeit a very good and timely one.

I’m going to call pass-rusher a position. We can’t seem to get enough pressure on opposing quarterback’s to give our secondary the opportunities for turnovers. Back in 2009, we didn’t have many sacks, but you could see the line and the linebackers hustling to get after the quarterback, and forcing them to make bad throws. We desperately need that.

I'm a HUGE Florida State fan

It sounds like you guys need Brandon Jenkins. He’s used mainly as a DE (either side), but lines up at OLB alot and drops into coverage often. He is unblockable off the edge and a solid tackler. I’d love for him to go somewhere like NO, where he has an opportunity to make a big impact early and maybe win a SB.

What round/draft position is he expected to go?

We don’t have a first (we used it on Mark Ingram).

by Dan Kelly on Dec 15, 2011 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

I forgot about that

While he had 13.5 sacks in 2010 and was expected to be upper first this year, he was used in a variety of different ways this year and got doubleteams like crazy, as I pointed out above. Since his stats don’t show how amazing he was in all of his roles, there might be a chance he slips to the very early second round.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

Question for you guys… was Ponder benched for his performance, the hip injury, or a combo of both?

When did the injury happen?

I hear he’s had a full practice, and will start. Do you think he will be hampered by the hip, or will be be full strength?

by Dan Kelly on Dec 15, 2011 1:37 PM CST reply actions

The injury happened the week before @ Denver

The injury limited his movement and hobbled him a bit. On one play, he was rolling out near the sideline and had 10 free yards ahead of him. He threw the ball across his body for a easy INT by a DB instead of taking the easy yards. The Ponder I’ve watched for four years would have not thrown that ball if he were healthy. He was taken out because the injury was limiting him. He shouldn’t have been put in IMO.

Hip pointers are tricky, especially if it’s bleeding, but I think he’ll start the game.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

It would be our Week 1 game Part 2

High scoring…..no defense

I think we can beat them in Lambeau, we just have to score and score and score….probably take some chances on 4th down and maybe a little trickery on special teams . Our pass defense sucks….their pass defense sucks…..it would be a fun game.

I'm hoping things turn out differently than week 1

The NFL would love for the Packers to have a perfect season, so the refs will be tough to beat too,,,,,
as well as the ridiculously cold weather in January!

by chaosg on Dec 16, 2011 1:49 AM CST up reply actions

the weather and the refs (and Patrick Robinson “defending” any of their top WR’s) … that’s all I’m worried about.

Our O-line has gotten better, Drew is throwing fewer INT’s, and we found the page in the playbook for outside and off-tackle runs. (We hadn’t gotten that far in our reading during week 1.)
