Favorites #1
After the most recent debacle in which Drew Brees bent the Vikings over and gave them a proctology exam without the use of hands… crude yes, but that’s actually the cleanest thing I could come up with to explain that GIANT Charlie Foxtrot of a game… I turned on my Playstation and began to punch rock my rage out. And since I don’t have any REAL skills at using an actual musical instrument I had to play Rock Band.
Anyways, as I was wailing through riffs and belting out lyrics to such classics as “Say It Ain’t So” with my avatar Lee D. Vocs, I thought about how great some of those songs were. And for some reason I thought about what my favorite music was and some music that helped me through my life when I was in a better or worse place than I am now.
Skol Girl has a thread that picks a song for different topics which is a pretty sweet idea. But I haven’t seen anything from anyone about what everyone’s favorites are. Maybe it’s a bit personal, but hey, what’s the harm in sharing some of your favorite band and singers with fellow DNers. It’s something light in this extremely oppressive season of disappointment.
So anyways, in order to get it started here’s some of mine. I couldn’t decide on just one so there are a few of each category, Favorite Band, Male singer, Female singer, Song.
Bands- Korn, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Breaking Benjamin, Poison, and to a lesser extent Boston, REO, Journey, Heart.
Male Singers– Chris Cornell, Jonathan Davis (Korn), Benjamin Burnley (Breaking Benjamin), M. Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold), Lajon Witherspoon (Sevendust), Sebastian Bach (Skid Row)
Female Singers– Pink, Anastasia, Pat Benatar, Ann Wilson (Heart), Lacey Sturm (Flyleaf)
Songs– Every Rose has it’s Thorn (Poison), I Remember You (Skid Row), Heaven (Warrant), Gunslinger and So Far Away (Avenged Sevenfold), Your Guardian Angel (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus)
Figured this would be a way to deaden a little bit of the pain associated with this season. I'm real interested in seeing some of everyone's fav's.
Happy Holidays to everyone and hopefully you have a great New Years also!

Just bought a "Bright Eyes" CD for my wife for Christmas. Don't tell.
A friend of mine gave us a “Monsters Of Folk” CD a while back, and it is our favorite thing to listen to. Then there are the spin offs like Jim James from "My Morning Jacket’ and M. Ward from "She and Him and the above mentioned “Bright Eyes” that I have not heard yet. It’s interesting stuff that’s not highly produced. Probably music that you would have to develop a taste for.
It might be fun to pick a song that best describes the 2011 Viking season.
My pick – “I’m Down” by the Beatles.

Great music, JethroBoViking!
I am a huge music fan covering a wide variety of genres, and I love all of the music you mentioned. Just for clarification, Monsters of Folk is an indie supergroup that consists of Jim James, Conor Oberst (who records under the name Bright Eyes as well as his real name), M. Ward, and Mike Mogis. All of these guys were well-established indie stars before they came together as Monsters of Folk. So, they are not spin offs of that group. And, M. Ward recorded under his own name for years (and still does) before he established She and Him with Zooey Deschanel.
Zooey Deschanel
I really like her voice.

I was basakwards. Thanks for pointing that out.
That’s just how it worked out for us because M.O.F. was the first music that we had heard.

Oh, JBV, one more thing...
I have a recommendation for you: check out an album called “I’m Having Fun Now” by Jenny and Johnny. I think you and your wife would like this based on your appreciation of Monsters of Folk.
Jenny is Jenny Lewis, who records with the band Rilo Kiley and also under her own name. Johnny is Johnathan Rice, a singer-songwriter that I had not heard of before this album.
Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out.
Also, we have listened to Jacob Dylan’s “Seeing Things” album quite a bit. It’s even more raw than the Monsters.

Real answers
Bands – Most Classic Rock of the 70’s and 80’s, REO, Journey, Queen, etc
Male singers – Micheal W. Smith, David Bowie, and agree with you about Sebastian Bach and back in the day liked Rob Halford a lot before he became kind of flakey, and always thought John Denver had one of the most unique voices
Female singers – Whitney Houston till she lost it, Shania Twain cause she is way hot, Kathy Troccoli.
Songs – I Remember You, almost too many to list.

Sebastian
Yeah, I wasn’t a huge fan until one day I heard I Remember You. At the end of the song when he’s holding that long note… still gives me chills. Unbelievable voice.

I don't have all-time favorites,
only what my ear is enjoying at the moment. And, right now I am completely into various forms of indie pop. Recording artists that I highly recommend from this genre:
Fleet Foxes, Junip, Beach House, Foster The People, The Dodos, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Delta Spirit, Arcade Fire, and Death Cab For Cutie
Gotta say
I haven’t heard much about any of these bands, but I’ll have to look into them. Thanks for sharing!

These are GREAT!
All of them. I’m glad some people were willing to do this. Like I said in the post, adds a little levity to the season. Thanks everyone!

You've gotta listen to
the “Up on the Ridge” album by Dierks Bentley. It’s a little more southern than Mumford and Sons or Old Crow Medicine Show, but that’s why I like it : )
