Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Hey, There's A Football Game Tonight!

And it affects us!

Hey, since a lot of folks have Friday off. . .you do have Friday off, right. . .folks are going to be watching Thursday Night Football (aslongastheyhavetheNFLNetwork). And this game, which would appear to be a dog for most folks, has some interest to those of us that cheer for the Minnesota Vikings.

The Houston Texans have clinched the AFC South title and the first playoff berth in franchise history, despite being on their third different quarterback and not having receiver Andre Johnson for the better part of this season. Tonight, they travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts, who got their first victory on Sunday afternoon, but would still hold the top overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft if it were held today.

That's where the interest for Viking fans comes in. If the Colts win this evening, it draws them even with the Vikings and Rams with two wins, and puts the top overall pick in the draft even more into play.

So, if you're going to be watching this one, feel free to talk about it with your fellow Viking fans here. Enjoy!

Am I the only one watching?

I picked the Colts to win just for wishful thinking but they already sucked on the first play…..this could be ugly. At least we get to watch a team that’s worse than us!!!

by gerkvoltage on Dec 22, 2011 7:33 PM CST reply actions

I'm watching...

Not expecting much from the Colts. The only thing I ever think of with Orlovsky is Jared Allen chasing him out of the back of the end zone.

LOL....

Almost forgot about that! Oh boy……this really is gonna be ugly.

But they still have one win less than us.

What a great start for the Colts!

If they do manage to win tonight though – the discussions tomorrow – Oh Lord!

For the Vikings FO

this isn’t ‘falling into place.’ I’m sure if they had their choice, they wouldn’t want the #1 selection and all the pressure to take Luck it comes with.

I think you might be right.

Particularly as a new GM (would we get one?) might like the idea of showing up for a team with the first pick of the draft.

I thought the inside money was betting against Manning ever playing again.

Still, wouldn’t it be weird if Manning pulls a Favre? Would be an interesting dynamic with Luck for sure if Manning still wants to be the man for a few years.

Strength of schedule favors us over St. Louis for the 2nd pick if they lose out and we do too.

Someone at Stampede Blue did all the number crunching for us.

by Purpledork on Dec 22, 2011 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

Ah. Just checked it out.
Well, one of the sports guys from an Indianapolis radio station has run the numbers a bit more extensively than I have, and it appears that the only way the Colts are going to fall out of the number one spot in the draft is if they win both of their final two games. The Colts play tomorrow night against Houston, and finish the season with a trip to Jacksonville. Derek Schultz has played out what is the “worst case” for Indianapolis and the “best case” for both Minnesota and St. Louis, and finds that if all three teams were to finish 2-14, it looks like the Colts would stay at #1, while the Vikings would pick second and St. Louis would end up in third.

Jacksonville must lose. Jacksonville must lose. Jacksonville must lose. Come on everybody, say it with me. Jacksonville must lose.

I mean what kind of crap is that? I know there is a very good chance that they will considering the talent but I cannot type that I want them to lose or overtly root for them to lose.

If the Vikings get the #1 pick then they are in a tough spot. If they cannot get a decent trade offer then they are stuck with having to decide if Andrew Luck is truly a once in a generation QB or if they should just take Matt Kalil. If they take Kalil and Ponder flops while Luck turns out to be all that then it will go down in infamy as one of the worst decisions ever. If they take Luck and he flops then that will be equally as bad.

yeah, however

I think the Vikings could actually get way more then that for Luck, though I’m not sure how much. either way, the Vikings are coming to a cross roads. Do they draft Luck and have him be the face of the future? Do they try to make out like a bandit and trade that pick away for a huge bounty? Or do they draft for a need with the first overall pick? Very hard decision to make here.

We still have the draft process to go through

At this time last year, I don’t think Cam Newton was regarded as the #1 QB prospect, but he wound up being so. But, for now.. yeah, it looks like their hand will pretty much be forced, and Andrew Luck will be the selection.

We also have some time before the draft

People move up and fall down all the time due to a number of factors… and RGIII, with his newly minted Heisman, could conceivable move up…

If anyone drafts someone other than Luck with the first overall pick this year

Their GM should be fired on the spot

NO-LUCK OPTION??

Can the Vikings work out a trade where they accumulate a lot of picks and still obtain Kahlil??

I think they can

Mike Holmgrem did make a statement this season, that he was interested in a getting a new QB and with the fall out and bad blood with Colt McCoy and the Browns organization. I think the Vikings could get the browns to give up their 2 first round picks in this draft, their 1st round pick in 2013, and their 2nd round pick this year. for the number 1 pick(assuming we do end up with with the first overall pick)

by mattnmics on Dec 22, 2011 11:50 PM CST up reply actions

How about this?

Get Cleveland’s two first round picks this year and their OT, Joe Thomas. I doubt the Browns would do this but I would in a second if I was the Vikes GM.

Heck, I would probably trade the #1 pick for just Thomas and the higher of the two picks.

Joe Thomas

would be the only untouchable player in a deal for Luck, but I would take that deal in about .5 seconds.

If we're #1 and the Colts are #2 that scenario would be in play.

It’d be like the Eli for Rivers and picks trade. We’d pick Luck and the Colt’s would pick Kalil and the bartering would either begin or a deal would be worked out before the draft. That’s also assuming that we wouldn’t just keep Luck : )

Keep Luck and trade Ponder?

FWIW, I’d much rather see you guys get Luck. Colts have already had their Manning. They’re do for some QB problems, no?

by rightnasty on Dec 23, 2011 1:02 AM CST reply actions

Quite frankly...

I really hope Ponder has a massive game and makes this decision for us by getting a win or two here and we focus on secondary and O-line like we need.

by Crosseyes on Dec 23, 2011 2:32 AM CST reply actions

True.

But even with the supposed sure-thing Luck is I still would feel worse back at square one like last draft than having a questionable but potentially good QB in Ponder and get right to the lineman and secondary. Pick Luck and watch more lineman and secondary players we need get swept up by other teams…

by Crosseyes on Dec 23, 2011 2:37 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah but so what - if Ponder stinks next year and the year after that...

…then we’re back at square one even FARTHER down the road.

Makes good logic to either get killer picks for Luck or else do NOT trade him and just keep him. Ponder can be a serviceable and tradable back-up if that’s the case.

by Wytefang on Dec 23, 2011 2:39 AM CST up reply actions

agreed...

however in my opinion makes more sense to pull a patriots and get as many picks as you can.
The Vikings also need to get rid of this TOA and have one guy make the picks. Need to have someone accountable for the team (GM)

you give your qb the best chance to win

and you dont do that by selecting Luck. Besides even Aaron Rodgers wouldnt play effective behind this oline so how can you expect a rookie qb to?

Things

I am hoping that the Wilf’s don’t retain Frazier and his two coordinators. Do we really want to allow this coaching staff to be the one’s that initially develop whomever we draft? LF,‘s record is 5-17 I believe since he was named Interim HC. Do we really want to entrust this staff with this team. We more than likely with the current crop of talent, going to be picking in the top 5 of the 2013 draft. If we have a 4-12 season for example, what chance is their realistically that LF is HC after next season. We have alot of options picking either 1,2 or 3. If we pick one, do we take Andrew Luck? I hope so. We should be able to trade Ponder for a great pick, and maybe a player that isn’t a work in progress. We are in serious need in just about every aspect of the game. We have a horrendous O-line, one slot receiver, no true 1 or 2 receiver. A pathetic secondary, issues at Linebacker, (Henderson…gone)..Greenway is underachieving.

in all honesty though…could the 2012 season be the curtain call for this team here. If the Wilf’s don’t do something dramatic, and intelligent, like hire a HC that has a proven track record, and we post a subpar season in 2012, the expectation of the Vikings playing in Minny in 2013, is very slim. Do we really want as taxpayers be building a BILLION dollar stadium for an organization that has underachieved for the past 51 years? Four SB losses…when we were the hands down better team. Another 4 NFC Championships lost, when we were again hands down, in 3 out of four of those games better than who we lost two.

Imagine for a moment if we succeeded the past 51 years like the Steelers, Cowboys, Giants, 49er’s to name four. Four teams that all have multiple World Championships. WE SHOULD BE…mentioned in the same breath as these teams…and we are epically failing…
