The VIKINGS NEW D.... 3-4 Scheme players/positions

LOLB=Chad Greenway...another Matthews IMO

ROLB=Everson Griffen...another Orakpo IMO

ILB=One of the Henderson Brothers

ILB= (R) Vontaze Burfict....Don't worry, Mike Singletary will maximize his potiental, and he will be a stud (the name Vernon Davis comes to mind, when i think of out of control players that played under singletary. By the way, how is that guy working out?

NT= Draft Pick/Free agent....this is where we regret taking Ponder, and not drafting that guy from AUBURN!

LDT=Jared Allen...if JJ Watts is having success at it , jared allen will be a STUD!!!!

RDT=Kevin Williams...again, if JJ Watts is having success at it......

LCB=Chris Cook....i will fill in the blank on this one, after the verdict....

RCB= (R) Cliff Harris. Jaylon Hosley...a ball hawk to say the least, sould be around in the 2nd round when we pick.

FS= JamarcaStanford

SS=Husain Abdullah

Now, I know what you are thinking, this DUDE is clueless, but hear me out. We have the veteran locker room to make sure the Harris, and Burficts of the world remember how blessed they are to be in the NFL in the first place. Secondly exactly how much trouble can you get into in Minnesota. REALLY! So with that being said how do you like your New and Improved vikings defense? and please don't forget viking world we are getting 1st round quality in the 4th and 5th round...because i really don't see any other organization wasting a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round pick on these two guys...That's my 2 cents. alright viking world, let me know what you think.

not really sure where these random players are coming from. and not really sure why you believe our players cant get in trouble.

That defense probably would still suck btw.

Why would Jared not be an OLB across from Everson with Robison as a DE and Greenway as an ILB?

Not sure about the switch, and how would we get Luck, Burfict AND Hosley?

Easy

If the chip fall our way (luck with the first overall pick)
Hosley with the second pick…(or the best CB available)
Burfict with the 4th.

Remember we are drafting high, so you can actually consider burfict to be a low 3rd rounder….considering everything he’s pulled at arizona st. don’t be surprised if he goes undrafted….ie everson griffin/ryan mallet, they were both projected out as1st round talent, Remember! GMs are not so quick to waste thier money on knuckleheads know-a-days…we are going to get burfict with a HUGH discount.

The fact that you

Think Burfict could go undrafted really makes me question your credibility. Vontaze has first round talent. Absolutely no way he falls past the second round.

So i guess Ryan mallet wasn’t a first round talent that fell in the draft….try again buddy!

LOL

No way Vontaze goes undrafted..he’s going to be the sleeper in the draft with all that flap. A coach will scoop him up and set him right. I’ll be saying told you so :)

Robison is to small to play DE in the 3-4

He would have to try OLB. At that point you are probably better off trading Jared Allen to a team that still plays the 4-3 for draft picks to make the transition.

Girlfriend back tracking on her statements...

…leads me to believe she’s preferring cash and an agreement that he’ll stay at least 5 miles away from her to actually getting nothing when he goes to jail. I think her injuries are pretty consistent with being attacked — even if the claim ends up being self defense.

nose tackle

The first huge problem with this, literally, is the lack of a nose tackle. There are very few of them. Without a huge guy in the middle, the 3-4 doesn’t work.

Are we going to draft a NT with our #1 pick this year?

NT in this scheme is somewhat overated

….who’s the Texans NT…..What about the 49ers…..What about the cowboys, the list goes on, and on, that position in this scheme is somewhat overated. if anything it has turned into the “scapegoat” if ran incorrectly…

by AP's Future Replacement on Dec 23, 2011 3:42 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Actually the NT position isn't overated it is underated

The teams that run a successful 3-4 has NT that blow up the middle of the O-line by themselves, they just do not get any glory stats (ala sacks, etc…). Their job is to stop everything up the middle and push it outside where the DE and OLBs get almost all the takcles, sacks, etc… The teams who run the 3-4 poorly is almost always caused by having a NT who can not pennetrate up the middle.

What I meant was

There is alot of things that would never happen or are preposterous in the post. Such as:

Greenway being another Mathews – Both have very different playing styles and Greenway cannot be used in the same ways Matthews is because he’s slow.

Jared Allen being a DT instead of a OLB – Speaks for it’self.

Everson Griffen being another B Orakpo – not enough tape and I’ve never seen him in coverage

If I offended, I’m sorry.

So the 4-3 can't work?

It has for years, all we need is a good draft and free agency full of DB’s to make our defense great again. We still have one of the best D-Lines in the league, and splitting them up or adding new roles would make our backfield look even worse.

Agreed

and on the Greenway = Mathews, no way totaly night and day. I agree with you and have said many times here that the Vikes need to get some bad boy stuff going on the defense. the 3-4 is a highly aggresive defense and if you dont have a secondary that is off the chain it’s burn time when things go sour. We do agree on Vontaze. Not many here do but this is a guy that is going to bloom into a dominate player. To many people forget guys like Browner, McDanial, Troy Palamalu, and recently Suh. Plenty of examples of guys off the chain that once in the NFL and a good coach that is able to take all that he brings in rawness and refines it and brings the best.

Our front seven seems to be doing pretty well. It's the d-backs that are getting roasted.

Plus, our offense is putrid and keeps the defense on the field more. I have nothing againstt the idea of a 3-4, but i don’t know the reason they would think of switching yet.

If we go 3-4, it would look more like this...

LDE Christian Ballard
NT Free Agent/Draft Pick
RDE Kevin Williams
LOLB Everson Griffen
LILB Chad Greenway
RILB EJ Henderson
ROLB Jared Allen
CB Chris Cook (assuming he’s not in prison)
CB Draft Pick
FS Mistral Raymond
SS Free Agent/Draft Pick

by JWILLIS11 on Dec 23, 2011 11:12 AM CST reply actions

Well..

A) Greenway =/= Matthews. He just doesn’t.
B) Faaaaar too early to say Griffin will be like Orakpo. Besides, he’s better suited to being a DE than a OLB.

Also, the switch to 3-4 would absolute suck for at least two season, because we simply do not have the pieces for it. Hell, we barely have the pieces necessary for our 4-3 scheme. And the LB corps that’s been suggested would suck in pass coverage, which would only further exaggerate the secondary’s shittiness. even with the ‘upgrade’ at CB.

You add that we’d be needing to draft pieces for a new defensive scheme on top of the fixes we need to make to the offense, and it makes absolutely no sense to be switching to a 3-4. We’d go from a two year rebuild to probably about 5.

by REVENGE4KLUWE on Dec 23, 2011 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

I do not think they should switch

but if anyhting it makes me think that the 3-4 may be BETTER for our current personel. We have a very solid D-line and a slightly above average LB core. switching to the 3-4 would actually allow us to put more of our “strengths” on the field at one time, i.e. having Allen, Robison, Griffin all out there at once. From what I have seen Allen would be used as the rushing OLB ala Clay Mathews, and I think JA would be better in pass coverage than any of out current LBs are.

by viking_#28 on Dec 23, 2011 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

Naw, that's playing with fire

Allen I could see switching, possibly. But the Packers did this same with with Kampman, who was a pretty good DE, and the OLB switch didn’t work out so much. Not every DE is going to be Mario Williams and thrive in a 3-4 as much as they did the 4-3. Odds would be against our DEs, none of whom strike me as being very consistent in coverage calls.

by REVENGE4KLUWE on Dec 23, 2011 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

well griffin plays OLB now, and has done a fine job

and Allen probably has a great INT:drop back ratio than most DBs or LBs have.

by viking_#28 on Dec 23, 2011 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

That's a good looking list. That's pretty much what I was thinking too.

Except I hadn’t even thought of the d-backs. Also, that would leave Jasper Brinkley, Guion and Robison to rotate in off the bench too. We really need d-back help or we will get torched again.

AWESOM-O is now initiating fart smell sequence.

by awesom.o on Dec 23, 2011 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

I have not seen anything to believe Singletary has been a good LB coach

Our LB’s have seemed to regressed, Erin Henderson aside. I like Chad Greenway but I don’t think he is well suited for a 3-4 scheme.
Griffin is best suited to have his hand down, and rush the passer, and is probably best suited as a 4-3 DE.
Why not list Jasper Brinkley as our other ILB? He is very good in stopping the run, and is a punisher across the middle, kind of like Ray Lewis (not saying he is Ray Ray, but has slightly similar qualities).
JA is too small to play DE in a 3-4 scheme. All of your D-Line in the 3-4 need to draw a double team to help stop the run, and big enough to defeat a double team.

I’m sorry, but there is no way both Sanford and Abdullah stay as our starting safeties. We have had way too many issues this year with no safety support, and them not being close enough to the ball for them to be back. One of them will be lucky for both of them to be starters on our team next year.

There have been lots of posts for a 3-4 and this may have been the worst concocted one I have read yet. I believe the 4-3 needs to stay in MN. There’s too much history here of the 4-3 Defense, and we are better suited to stay there than make the switch.

Useless statistics...

For one, only 56% of those teams run a 3-4, so I have no idea where you’re going with this.

And secondly, it’s not like scheme overrides player talent. It’s the opposite actually. You build the scheme around the players, not Vise Versa. The teams that do run a 3-4 with success, have the talent for it; we do not. Changing players is almost always a better and easier way to transform a defense rather than changing the scheme.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

by Alittlemore_cowbell on Dec 23, 2011 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

I am not sure about the personnel in this scheme

First I do not think Allen is a 3-4 type end. He is not stout enough. It also takes away from his greatest strength which is rushing the passer.

Second, any plan that involves both Sanford and Abdullah remaining starters is one that is doomed from the start. I just do not see how they can remain starters in the NFL. The Vikings need to UPGRADE the safety position in the worst way and you have the same players returning. I am confused by this strategy to say the least.

Third. Nick Fairley is not a NT. He is more like Kevin Williams and probably would be a good fit as one of the 3-4 DEs in this scheme.

I just do not see the Vikings switching to a 3-4. Allen is the best 4-3 DE in the league and you definitely DO NOT want to take him away from what he does best. That in and of itself is just crazy. And that takes a lot for me to say since I am crazy myself.

by MarkSP18 on Dec 23, 2011 5:32 PM CST reply actions

........

If that’s the case, why would Houston take thier #1 OVERALL PICK in Mario Williams, and risk him not being effective in your NEW 3-4 D…now MY logic in all of this, is that you get JA more closer to the QB, in stead of rushing him from the 7-9 tech, now granted HE might not have 100 sacks, but he will draw so much attention on the inside that it will cause our LB, and blitzing Safety’s to have a field day…also you can mix up your pre-read snaps a lot better with more athletes on the field…If i were a QB in the NFL, i would rather have to deal with JA @ DE and 3 LBs, than have to deal with a high octane JA at the 5 tech, and 4 LBs…i hope it makes a little more sense to you sir…and i apologize for insulting your intelligence.

I do not see Mario Williams having much success in the 3-4 yet

Why they switched over is curious at best. Maybe he will do better next year but I do not think he does well in coverage at all. This is the same thing that will happen to Allen. I suppose the Texans are thinking that Williams can be like Demarcus Ware. Maybe so but not yet.

All I am saying is that the Vikings spent a ton of money bringing Allen to the team and still owe him 11.62 mil in 2012 and 14.3 mil in 2013. That is a lot of money to pay a player and have him change his position and the way he plays. He is doing extremely well where he is at right now and it just seems odd to want to try and change something that is not broken (at least with Allen).

But maybe you are right and he would do well as a 3-4 OLB with mainly pass rushing responsibilities? As long as he can rush the passer the majority of the time then maybe it will be OK.

They still will need a big DT that can handle the double teams and clog up the middle. And you did not mention anything about keeping the same awful safeties. I really cannot believe that they will do better in a different defense.

by MarkSP18 on Dec 23, 2011 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

Agree

I agree with Mark here …Allen is playing in a scheme that his talent is show cased, to switch it would prolly not be the best of results. I’m all for a mean 3-4 but we do not have the make up for it. As many have said here the secondary we have could not do it.
