Complete Vikings Roster Breakdown

All the Vikings in a team huddle before the game vs. the Texans (via rburtzel)

The Vikings have many decisions to make when this season is completed. Many people will not be returning and the roster will look different. I wanted to give everyone a rough idea of who I think will return next season. So here is a complete breakdown of the Vikings 53-man roster (including those on injured reserve).

(+) Denotes player returning, (-) denotes player not returning, (B) means on the bubble

LB- Xavier Adibi: (-) The Vikings picked Adibi up from the Texans during the season. He is unlikely to return due to a limited impact.

CB- Asher Allen: (+) Asher Allen has improved his skills and could possibly be a nickel cornerback option for the Vikings. Allen stays and makes an impact on the defensive secondary.

DE- Jared Allen: (+) No doubt about this one, Jared is coming off his best season as a pro and is one of the best players the Vikings have. The only way he could make is way out of town is if the Vikings switch to the 3-4 defensive scheme.

WR- Emmaunel Arceneaux: (B) I hope Emmanuel stays due to the Vikings wiliness to bring him back on the practice squad. I really like Arceneaux and wish the Vikings would have given him more of a chance this season.

WR- Devin Aromashodu: (B) Devin’s fate depends on what the Vikings do at the wide receiver position in the offseason. If the Vikings draft of sign a vertical threat wide receiver, Aromashodu will be on the way out.

DT- Remi Ayodele: (+) The Vikings have faith in Remi and signed him to a three year contract at the start of the season. Remi should be given one last shot to become more conditioned through OTA’s.

DT- Christian Ballard: (+) Christian is one of this year’s Vikings rookies who has a ton of potential. If Remi Ayodele continues to be inconsistent or Kevin Williams leaves, Christian will need to make a huge impact.

OG- Joe Berger: (B) This depends on how the Vikings address the offensive line in the off-season. Berger is an average offensive lineman who can play several positions.

RB- Lorenzo Booker: (-) The Vikings should not keep this fumbling machine in Minnesota. I know he is explosive but he can’t hold onto the ball. We can do better at the running back position.

T- Patrick Brown: (-) The Vikings have more faith in Demarcus Love and can do better in the draft.

CB- Brandon Burton: (+) Brandon has a ton of potential and I believe he should have another season to grow as a player.

WR- Greg Camarillo: (-) Greg Camarillo has had less and less of an impact and I think we can get younger at this position.

CB- Chris Cook: (B) Cook’s future comes down to the settlement of his legal case. If all turns out well, he will be back.

FB- Ryan D’Imperio: (+) Ryan has improved and has turned into a credible fullback. He also is very good on special teams.

LB- Larry Dean: (+) Even though Larry has been disappointing as a specialist, he will be back and will need to improve on an average season.

DT- Fred Evans: (-) I don’t see the Vikings keeping Evans who has made little impact this season. He takes a little bit of a cap hit and won’t be back next season.

CB- Eric Frampton: (+) Frampton has struggled slightly this season but he will be back and is a good special teamer.

C- Brandon Fusco: (+) Fusco has potential but needs to get his fiery attitude under control. It seems he gets a personal foul penalty every game he plays in.

RB- Toby Gerhart: (+) Toby absolutely stays and will need to step up now that Adrian Peterson could be out for a period of time next season.

LB- Chad Greenway: (+) Chad reached a long-term agreement at the start of the season and has been the Vikings leading tackler.

DE- Everson Griffen: (+) I love the potential of Everson and feel he has really been great on special teams. He has great flexibility and could potentially play OLB.

CB- Cedric Griffin: (B) Cedric has been treading on thin water after being pulled from the Detroit game. I don’t think he is happy and doesn’t want to contribute to the Vikings. We will see what happens though.

DT- Letroy Guion: (+) Has potential and is a serviceable backup on the defensive line.

WR- Percy Harvin: (+) Percy is the most explosive Viking and isn’t going anywhere.

LB- E.J. Henderson: (-) I don’t think there is anyway E.J. returns next season. He just doesn’t have it like he did earlier in his career. He has lost a step and can’t keep up.

LB- Erin Henderson: (+) I love Erin’s ability and I feel he could have a shot to fill his brother’s role if he leaves.

OG- Anthony Herrera: (+) The Vikings want to see Anthony Herrera have an offseason where he doesn’t have to battle an injury.

T- Charlie Johnson: (B) It depends on what the Vikings do to upgrade the offensive position. If he comes back he will have to remarkably step up.

LS- Matt Katula: (-) Merely a fill-in for Cullen Loeffler.

RB- Caleb King: (-) He won’t be back; he is simply a potential RB to evaluate.

FB- Jim Kleinsasser: (-) Jim has expressed he is retiring after this season.

P- Chris Kluwe: (+) Great punter and great guy. He will absolutely return next season.

T- Phil Loadholt: (+) Loadholt will be in a contract year and he needs to step it up majorly. He is a major problem on the offensive line.

K- Ryan Longwell: (+) Even though Ryan has struggled lately, we have bigger worries than the kicker position.

T- Demarcus Love: (+) The Vikings feel he has potential and they should take a strong look at him to see if he could be a part of the future offensive line.

LB- Kenny Onatolu: (-) Kenny isn’t valuable anymore and he will be gone at the end of the season. He was injured for some of the season. He isn’t as good as he used to be.

S- Jarrad Page: (-) Page was simply just a experiment and won’t be back.

QB- Christian Ponder: (+) No question Christian will be back but it will be interesting to see if there is an open quarterback competition between him and Joe Webb.

S- Mistral Raymond: (+) Has tons of potential and has shown flashes. I believe he could be an answer at safety in a few years.

DE- D’Aundre Reed: (+) The Vikings really like Reed and want to give him another year to see what he can do.

DE- Brian Robison: (+) Robison has had his ups and downs but will be back and playing alongside Jared Allen next season.

QB- Sage Rosenfels: (-) Simply was a last resort backup quarterback.

TE- Kyle Rudolph: (+) Visanthe Shiancoe will be gone and Kyle will be the new starting tight end. I like Rudolph’s build and his potential to be a great tight end.

S- Jamarca Sanford: (-) The Vikings will look to upgrade this position and Jamarca will become a backup. Jamarca has been a tad bit disappointing this season.

CB- Benny Sapp: (-) He simply was a last minute fill-in and will be gone.

S- Andrew Sendejo: (-) Was just brought in to evaluate his talent.

CB- Marcus Sherels: (+) Is great on special teams and is a great backup nickel cornerback.

TE- Visanthe Shiancoe: (-) It isn’t worth paying Shiancoe the money he wants when he plays like he did against the Redskins. Kyle Rudolph will be an upgrade to the position.

TE- Mickey Shuler: (B) Has been on and off with the Vikings and it depends on how he does in training camp next season. He could find his way on the 53 man.

C- John Sullivan: (+) Just signed a long term contract and is doing a great job a center for the Vikings.

QB- Joe Webb: (+) Joe stays and competes for the starting quarterback job in training camp. I like Joe Webb and the coaching staff likes the energy he brings to the team.

DT- Kevin Williams: (B) He is on the bubble and could be gone if he wants too much money. I hope Kevin stays because he is a force in the middle.

S- Husain Abdullah: (B) Depends on the severity of the concussion he suffered this season.

G- Steve Hutchinson: (B) Steve may retire after suffering his concussion. If he wants to stay in Minnesota he will have to take a large paycut.

WR- Michael Jenkins: (+) I like the hands he brings to the wide receivers and he played well when he was healthy.

S- Tyrell Johnson: (-) When Tyrell played he got ran by like he was tied to a post. Farewell Tyrell!

RB- Adrian Peterson: (+) The only hope is that Adrian recovers after the torn ACL and that he can play the same after the injury. Keep your fingers crossed!

CB- Antoine Winfield: (+) He will recover and make plays for the Vikings. If he stays healthy he can help improve a depleted secondary.

My overall assessment concludes 17 Vikings will not be returning and 9 Vikings are on the bubble. This means 41% of the current roster could be leaving for new destinations. The rest of the players will be returning with a new cast of players beside them.
