Tim Tebow: Up Close
via thedoozy.com
Because I am an NFL fan in general, I have been fascinated (albeit at a distance) at his improbably rise from third-string to the most talked-about quarterback issue this season (besides perhaps the neck of Peyton Manning).
I mean, from all I've heard about this guy, he's absolutely terrible as a "traditional" NFL quarterback. He won't stay in a pocket long enough to survey his options, his mechanics are sketchy, and his accuracy is fairly poor as well. Simply put, he doesn't pass the "eye test" of NFL QB's.
On the flip side, Tebow is accomplishing the ultimate NFL goal: winning games. Give him the ball with minutes to go and your team needing a score, and (at this point) you're almost guaranteed a victory. Heck, in an NFL era that saw the Wildcat formation flame out as quickly as Purple McNabb, Tebow has convinced his coaches to put in the college-option offense for him to run.
Thus, I am excited (oh yeah, Tim, thanks for selling out our Dome too!) to watch Mr. Tebow for an entire game this Sunday. I want to see what makes this guy tick and what makes him such a special character. The Vikings (despite their current reputation) put up a pretty solid defensive front against non-stud QB's, so it will be interesting to see how Tebow responds.

I must say
I’ve become quite the Tim Tebow fan over these past few weeks. I really like his attitude and the guy flat out just wins games for his team. The players like him and he is a team-first kind of guy. What’s not to like about him?

I agree that it's hard not to like him except for the fact that his passing is generally awful
The Broncos have made the most of Tebow’s abilities, but they are running an offense that is going to take its toll on Tebow – but they have no choice. He’s a running QB with a great can-do confidence. He’s throwing is mostly bad with moments of brilliance.
I should probably admit however that I don’t follow the Broncos closely. Their defense has looked pretty good to me, and the running game just carved up the Chiefs when the Broncos were in Kansas City thanks in large part to winning the battle at the win of scrimmage. Put Tebow’s style on a different team that can’t so easily run the ball and play good defense, and I think Tebow suffers a good deal more.

He plays the QB very ugly
And yes, his passing is generally awful.
The good news (for us Broncos and guys who like him) is that he already showed a lot of improvement. He doesn’t have anymore a run-first atittude, he is making 2 or at least 3 check downs before throwing the football, he is not being sacked anymore, he is delivering the pass much faster (still not fast enough imo), he is dropping back better and he is reading blitzes better.
He is far from being perfect on all these aspects, but he showed improvements on all of them… and that’s fascinating!

In all fairness, our running game was marginal at best before Tebow. He struggles passing at times (although if you look at the last two games there aren’t many awful throws, and several drops) but you have to consider the threat of Tebow running has a HUGE impact on the success of our running game overall. He makes the LB delay an extra split second because of the threat that he might be keeping it. If players don’t stay home he makes them pay.
I don’t know if he will be a huge success long term, but the fact that a defense has to play disciplined, and can’t flow and react like they normally would puts them in a bad situation. Our running game absolutely blew up as soon as we started using Tebow and it’s not just a coincidence.
And yes, our defense has played lights out. But again, Tebow has 1 INT this year. It’s been rare that a team doesn’t have to go 70yds+ to get to the endzone against us. Again, it may not last, but our offense, while not potent, puts our defense in great position to shut people down. We’ve won with an across the board team effort. Miller is our MVP so far if I have to pick one, but everybody has stepped up at times to do what needed to be done.
Go-Go Gadget Tebow!!!!
Tebow's record
For every other starting QB wins and losses is the bottom line.
But for Tim Tebow, he is judged by other standards such as “style” points and denied credit for wins as the “defense” is given most of the credit and Tebow is treated simply as a bystander providing little input to the victory due to his quarterbacking abilities.
