Just for kicks and giggles here, I decide to write a FanPost on a point I touched on in my post RE Albert Haynesworth. With Ray Edwards and Pat Williams likely to depart, and Everson Griffin's recent misadventures (although the Vikings did indicate they will keep him regardless), our D-line's depth is beginning to be tested. Furthermore, with crucial needs on the O-line and secondary, and a highly questionable QB situation, we're hard pressed to increase the depth in the draft, or even in FA (which probably won't happen anyways). While we tried our hand in the CFL, we lost out there as well.
Now granted, we do have the depth necessary to simply absorb these losses and move on- although to think there won't be a decline is some heavy purple juice drinkin'. But yes, the decline should be relatively minimal.
That said- what if, and again, this is just speculation for fun, we decided to absorb these losses by switching to a 3-4 scheme? Place Jimmy Kennedy at NT, and keep Jared Allen and K Williams on the outside. It would be a bit of a transition for everyone- K Williams in particular- but I believe their work ethic and natural talents would allow the adjustment to be pretty quick.
The real trick would be the whole LB situation. Just as with Ray-Ray and Phat Pat, we're out a LB here- Ben Leber. (If Chad Greenway isn't a Viking next year I'll.... I'll.... I dunno what but it'll be bad!) So technically, instead of replacing two on the D-line, we'd be replacing one as well as filling in a new spot with the LBs- leaving us in a similar predicament. However, I'm a bit more sold on our LB depth. Jasper Brinkley has done rather well in the MLB situation- line him up along EJ Henderson. Leave Greenway on the outside, and fill Leber's spot with Erin Henderson- I think he's a rather underrated LB; however, that's more based off of preseason than regular season showings, so I could be wrong.
It would stretch us thin some- that leaves Farwell and Onatolu, primarily ST players, as our depth. We'd have to fill in at least one other player somehow to keep the security blanket snug and warm. But a low draft LB isn't out of the question even as it is now.
What do you guys think? Even though it was an in-house promotion, there's a new DC in town, and one way or another, the face of our front 7 is changing this offseason regardless. Could the Vikings break form and go 3-4?
(Remember, this is just for some fun discussions- again, there's absolutely no reason to believe this will happen; in fact, it seems as likely to happen as a miraculous return from Brett Favre.)
