Tag...You're It!

Yesterday, the Minnesota Vikings slapped the franchise tag on LB Chad Greenway. A seemingly odd choice, but here's why I think it's a good one:

1. Really the only other option for the tag would have been Sidney Rice. As explosive of a talent as he might be, I'm not sure he has entirely committed to this organization yet, plus his lingering injury concerns. Remember, Bernard Berrian had one pretty good season with us too, and look at him now.

2. Finding sack-machines and shutdown corners are usually the priorities of most defenses. However, with solid linebackers, a defense can be so much more flexible. I mean, look at a team like Green Bay. They can let their corners cover, their rushers rush, and so the LB's (Matthews, Hawk, and Bishop) are freelancers. Of course, the way our defense sets up right now the LB's pretty much focus on shutting down the run, but if that works in conjunction with a solid pass-rush, all of a sudden we're back to making the opposition one-dimensional.
