Viking fans, what are your list of priorities for our team?
I've been writing a lot of FanPosts lately. I wonder if it's some sort of Freudian call for attention. Of course, Mr. Gates totally one upped me on my post regarding Zygi Wilf's decision to be an awesome owner and all-around good guy, but at least he gave me a shout out so my urge was satisfied.
Or maybe because it's the offseason and there's nothing else to do, and I'm desperately trying to fill the time and awkward silences so as to numb the pain of not having my beloved Vikings around to watch play. (Then again, perhaps this is better than watching them play in 2010...)
One or the other. Regardless, here we go.
Last offseason, the Vikings had a simple task- get the band back together and go win a Super Bowl. It was as ridiculously simple as that. It didn't go quite as smooth as it should have- for some reason, Chester Taylor was deemed useless and Brett Favre decided to... well, be Brett Favre about the whole thing. But for the most part it was mission accomplished come NFL opener against our foes the NO Saints- heck, we had even drafted a CB to help out our only weakness, the secondary (because CB was what we needed, not FS or SS) and we had replaced that Chester guy with this Gerhart guy, who was obviously going to be even better. Sure, Sydney Rice was out for a bit, but heck, we had Bernard Berrian and had even added Greg Camarillo, so it wasn't like the WR corps was going to be all that bent outta shape. I mean, we had Favre the Great throwing the ball around. What could go wrong?
Well, everything went according to plan. The Vikings ended the season with their first Super Bowl victory, Pat Williams fulfilled his promise to strip dance for the fans (and many children cried), and on top of it, we one-upped the Miami Dolphins AND the New England Patriots by going 19-0 in the process. Take THAT, AFC East! Oh, and we even picked up Randy Moss again for a 7th round draft pick, immediately signing him to a contract extension, after which he was a model citizen and caught 100 TDs the rest of the season. Did I forget that Zygi Wilf fired Childress in the preseason, realizing the contract extension in 2009 was a mistake and Leslie Frazier coached the crap outta of us the entire time? And that we celebrated the Super Bowl afterwards in our new stadium?
OK, that was fun, back to reality. Well, regardless of whether or not what I just wrote was in fact just a dream, we're in quite a different position this offseason to make our 2011-12 Super Bowl run. We have quite a few FAs, and besides that, numerous- NUMEROUS- needs all over the place.
I wanted to write this FanPost and get everyone's opinions on their list of needs, in order of priority. Ignore draft prospects and FA for right now- we've got lots of discussions floating all over the place about who we should draft where, who we should get in FA, etc. so that will be a bit redundant. I'm just curious how you all feel about which need ranks where. I would imagine the top 3-6 will be mostly the same for majority of us, but exactly which of those falls where in that list will undoubtedly vary. I'm really interested in going beyond that though- top priority all the way down to bottom. Feel free to use ties if you want (I will). And if you like, you can always consider making two lists- one presuming certain re-signings happen, one if they don't. (For example, I imagine WR will change dramatically on that list for us depending on whether Rice is resigned or not.)
Here's my list, with a complex version and a simpler version. I'm going to make two presumptions for it, one I (hope) is reasonable and the other being a rather big assumption (much more hope in this case)- we will resign both Sydney Rice as well as Ray Edwards.
#1- Offensive Guard
#2- Quarterback
#3- Offensive Tackle
#4- Free Safety
#5- Center
#6- Cornerback
#7- Strong Safety
#8- Tight End
#9 (tie)- Defensive Tackle
#9 (tie)- Outside Linebacker
#10- Punt Returner (it's not really a full position per se, but I'd like to see us upgrade here somehow)
#11 (tie)- Wide Reciever
#11 (tie)- Defensive End
#11 (tie)- Fullback (because I really don't think we actually need one)
#11 (tie)- Inside Linebacker
#12 (tie)- Long Snapper
#12 (tie)- Running Back
#12 (tie)- Punter
#12 (tie)- Kicker
#12 (tie)- Kick Returner (since I included punt returner above)
Of course, that's my 'complex' list, if you want to do it simpler, here's another version:
#1- O-line
#2- QB
#3- Secondary
#4- Tight End
#5- LB/ DT/ PR
#6- DE/ WR/ FB
#7- KR/ P/ K/ LS/ RB
OK, your turn. Let's keep it civil here- we're all going to disagree on some level, so let's therefore just agree to disagree in advance. Debates are good and that's why I'm posting it but let's keep the heat at 'simmering'. Sound off, Viking faithful.
....is anyone paying attention to me yet?

1. Oline…..I’m thinking a C. I don’t really care for Sullivan.
2. QB. I believe Mayock when he say’s that the QB’s in this draft aren’t worth drafting in the 1st.
If that’s the case, than I think we should forget about drafting a QB, and give up our 2nd rounder for K.Ortin.
3. S. Not sure which is more important at this point, FS or SS, but M.Williams and T. Johnson need to go.
4. I don’t know who the FO plans to keep around, but we could need a TE, DE, DT, WR and on and on, so I’m going to stop here.
Where did Mayock say
that none of the QBs are worth drafting? I recall him saying, regarding franchise QBs, that if you find one you pull the trigger with no questions asked, and he then claimed Gabbert, specifically, as a franchise QB.
Not to say we’ll get Gabbert, but I doubt he doesn’t think any QB should be taken in the first round this year. I’d like to see a link of him suggesting that.
I heard him say that on NFL Network.
He may have said that 1 or 2 QB’s were worth looking at, but otherwise he’s not impressed with the QB’s in this draft.
I certainly wouldn’t get my hopes on grabbing anyone with value at #12, especially when 7 or more teams in front of us need a QB too.
Hmmmm. Couldn't disagree more with this nonsense...
D-Line is now our biggest need. Phat Pat is 38, we’re looking at losing 3 DE’s, Kevin Williams isn’t getting any younger and our stout Run D isn’t so stout. Can’t win the game if our Offense deosn’t have the ball. I strongly believe we go DE/DT 1st round. Then look for us to take a shot on a QB. Third round is a nice landing spot for a Gaurd. After that we could go TE/S/DE… I mean… what don’t we need???
Draft a QB! Please God!

You make a good point.
However, the Oline isn’t exactly young neither.
Mckinnie and Hutch are long in the tooth. Same goes for kleinsasser and Shank.
The rest of the Oline is younger, but they’re not exactly worth mentioning……Sullivan, Herrera and Loadholt all had sub-par performances last year.
Like I said, we don’t know who the FO plans on resigning.
There’s so many FA’s this year and that makes it that much more difficult to predict how the Vikings will draft.
We're losing
two starters and a backup- admitedly, a backup who does work for special teams as well. Of course, we’re also now running under the assumption that both Robinson and Edwards will leave. It keeps seeming more and more like Ray-Ray was right that he won’t be a Viking next year, but I would actually be surprised if Robinson wasn’t resigned.
But you’re also forgetting the depth we have a D-line. Yes, replacing both P Williams and R Edwards will cause a dip in production, but I do believe with both our depth at D-line, our solid LB corps, and J Allen/ K William still around, that D-line is nowhere near the top of our priorities this offseason.
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
Can Robison be an every down player though? I know he’s a good pass rusher but he’s only like 260 lbs. right? That’s a bit undersized, especially when you consider that most teams RT’s are the bigger, better run/drive blockers. I guess I really don’t know how good Robison is against the run but I’ve always thought that he’s just a good a pass rusher as Edwards is. I always kind of assumed that Edwards started over him because he’s pretty stout against the run.

Robinson
is a bit of an unknown as far as that goes, in a sense, because he’s been a big special teams guy for us and therefore somewhat underutilized as a DE. Aside from Edwards’ ability against the run I also think that’s why he has always been the unquestioned starter over Robinson.
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
I also think
that we’re in the middle of an evolution in the Vikings’ defense as of the past few seasons. With the departure of P Williams and B Leber, as well as the likely departure of R Edwards, I strongly believe we’re just going to have to accept that our run defense will not be back in the top three of the NFL for a few seasons at least. It doesn’t mean we have to suck at it, but I don’t know if the terror we once were against the run will be back anytime soon.
I think the best way to handle this starts with acceptance. Trying to ‘force’ that back won’t work. If Jasper Brinkely and K Williams can hold their own on the interior, and E Griffin and J Allen can terrorize a QB, we have a start. But the key will be reinforcing the secondary and allowing the LB corps to play where it’s supposed to play. We still have EJ Henderson and Chad Greenway there, and our depth at LB I believe will be enough to fill in for Leber. In that case, yes, more runs will happen, but we can stiffle them short and not suffer that much.
In 2009 we were shockingly bad in the pass-defense department; shockingly so because otherwise we were such a great team, defense included. in 2010 our LBs played back to try and reinforce this, and ultimately, even with the entire D-line back, we still suffered against the run. Oh, and we still sucked against the pass just like in 2009. So ultimately our defense, once a very reliable cornerstone of our team, wasn’t able to do what it should have.
If we accept certain realities in where we will be weaker, do what we can to create an overall reinforcement, I believe that while we might not make top five in any particular area on defense, we can possibly make top 5 overall.
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
Thanks for the response. That all definitely makes sense. The one question I have is will Leber for sure be gone? Being in WI now for school, I don’t read the Star Tribune anymore so I’m not really up to date on Vikings related news. Did they not tender him? And if he is gone, do you see Brinkley taking over his starting role?
I think the most important thing for you guys is fixing the pass defense. It’s great to have a great DL and pass rush but even when you guys have had that it still hasn’t been enough to make up for a mediocre secondary. Winfield is great but he’s really the only one. Griffin seemed to be improving in 2009 but even then, I wouldn’t say he was anything more then solid. And now coming off of two ACL tears, it could very well take him a while to get back that level of play.
I think Cook is still a bit of a question mark. I don’t think he really played enough for anyone to judge what he’ll end up turning out like.
The other guy is Asher Allen. I’m not sold on him being anything more then a career dime back really. Seems like he gets fooled a bit too much, and I remember him missing some pretty crucial tackles this season too.
With Griffin and Allen coming back, I think your CB’s should be good enough but if a guy like Akumura fell, I think he’d be a must.
The S’s are a big problem too, which is an even bigger problem in itself because of the fact that you guys run a cover 2. After watching Williams this year, I’m convinced he had to have been one of the worst starting safety’s in the league. He was always a step late in coverage, and took some really, really poor angles which often times lead to him looking pretty silly. Abdullah was solid but I think he’s one of those guys that’s really heady but doesn’t necessarily have the athleticism to match. Though, if you were to find a good S to fill in for Williams, Abdullah could probably be a pretty good complimentary guy.

QB is the easy answer to this question. But we as fans found out if Favre isn’t playing out of his mind (like 2009-2010), we have far more glaring weaknesses.
Our defense isn’t nearly as good as everyone thinks. To win in the NFL nowdays you need so solid hard hitting LBs and fearless safeties and CBs.
I’d say our needs are:
1. QB (hopefully, hopefully we don’t take anyone in the 1st round, no one is worth a first round pick)
2. LB – Vikings need to find our own Clay Matthews/ Lamar Woodley
3. CB/Safety – Patrick Peterson wouldn’t be a bad pickup at all, although we’ve wasted far too many picks each draft getting CBs that under preform.
... Wait.
How often do you dream of Phat Pat doing strip dances for fans?
I have complex dreams.
There is always an element of nightmare involved.
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
1) OG (tired of McKinnie)
2) FS (Madieu is a nice guy, but a lousy Safety)
3) QB (I know, third…what am I thinking?)
4) OT (Hutch is getting long in the tooth)
5) LB (The starters are decent, but our depth is questionable)
6) CB (I’m a little worried about Chris Cook)
7) DE (Edwards likely gone, Everson needs competition)
8) FB (Tahi has terrible hands and Peterson under performs behind a FB so we need a catching and pass prot. FB)
9) DT (I think we’re ok here, but adding some depth wouldn’t be bad)
10) C (I’m not as down on Sullivan as many are, but another option may be good)
And I disagree with tho0505 on the Vikes defense, the stats say it was almost as good as it has been in previous years. The defense got into trouble because they were stuck playing from behind most of the year because of the lousy offensive play; hence 3 of my top 4 needs being on the O.

fix for #8
Move Jimmy the K back to FB, let Tahi go, then pick up Owen Daniels from the Texans

Bravo LA
Someone finally said it! I totally agee. Jimmmy san akso be that "bull"on short and 1st plays. A vlocking back that slips behind the line for a short yardage pass. He has eveything, Everything that Chilly never utilized.
Could be the sneakiest option on disguising the WC blended offense that is being sold to us as the new look.
WC blend with some spread and even wildcat. I like the idea. Vikings did little to shift the look to opposing D’s. I wouldn’t nind an occasional I set with 2 fast backs -Harvin and AD. Pass options or run? Sure leave D’s wondering about the heavy blitzes that so easily worked against Chillys bread and butter playbook

1) DL. We are looking at the possibility of losing 3 guys on the line this year. Maybe 4, Kennedy?
2) OL. Though I don’t think we are in as bad of shape as a lot of people do. I do think Center is a priority.
3) Safety. Speaks for itself. Though Abdullah is ok.
4) CB. We actually got 1 great, 1 good, and 1 with some potential.
5) WR. I like Sydney and Percy, but I think we are just missing that 3rd guy…Maybe Jamyar is the guy. I don’t know.
6) QB. I am a Joe Webb fan. I think he has a lot of heart. He just needs a little time.

Needs
1) QB – No position on the team is more critical than this one, and for this position, we have bupkiss. Erm. Webb. That’s it. And while I’m in favor of giving Webb a shot in competition, I’m in no way under the presumption that Webb is a #1 QB at this time.
2) O-line. Where to start? Tackles, Guards, Center….. I don’t know, I don’t care, FIX IT.
3) Safety. Enough of Johnson Experiment, get a stud muffin back there. Looks like it may be Winfield for one of the slots, but if that’s the case, on to the next option;
4) Corners. Cook didn’t live up to his promise, Griff may turn out to be more fragile than we hoped for, Winfield is going to Safety….. we need some help here.
5) Kicker – If Longwell decides to go play golf, who’s going to boot the ball? Warcraft doesn’t do field goals. Maybe Joe Webb? How far can athleticism take you?
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
Alex HENERY
Of Nebraska would be a great player for the Vikes
I laughed, cried, and soiled myself when reading the fantasy thing... *sigh
Making the list based on the presumption that Sydney will get resigned, not Edwards, but that we will keep Griffen and Robison.
1)O-Line
2)Safety (i say give Cook another year)
3)Defensive tackle(got to replace Phat Pat)
4) Quarterback( i still think bring in a vet and give Webb a chance, don’t burn a first round pick)
5)Corner(we might end up needing to move Winfield to safety, which means we need to fill up the corner spot again)
6)Tight end( K-Sauce is getting old, Shiancoe is probably on the decline too.)
7)Linebacker just to add depth
Welcome, ladies and gentleman, to the aftermath of the chaos of the 2010 season. I now look forward to the draft. Help the O-Line! SKOL VIKINGS!!
And why did Cris Carter not get into HOF?? As my coach would say, the ballot voters had their thumb up their butt and their mind in Arkansas. I have nothing against Arkansas though.
Oops... Throw kicker in as a tie at #4 with Quarterback, I forgot to throw that in there. Bump the other numbers down one then.

(1) O-Line, need help almost straight across the line.
(2) QB, Can’t be any lower because we don’t have many options and we need to just sack up and draft a QB who isn’t going to be a long term project.
(3) Safety, Madieu needs to go, great guy but not a very good safety at this point in his career.
(4) DE/DT, Either spot to be honest, need both as much as the other.
(5) WR, TBH I might put WR tied with DE/DT depending on what happens with our players and whom we let go but realistically I don’t see BTwice coming back, see Baskett and Lewis being let go for sure and even Camarillo could be let go as I don;t think he warrents a 2-3million a year contract for the production he actually gives. Granted he is consistent but that amount might be too much when the Vikes are going to be trying to resign other more important people.
Hypothetically WR could be tied with number 3.
If Rice, Lewis,Baskett, Camarillo go. We might really be up shit’s creek with no paddle.
Camarillo?
Do you think he’ll go? He’s under contract, and not a very expensive one at that. I think he earned his pay and spot last season.
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
I think Camarillo will stay too.
He has a fine Resume as a WR and ST’s, and like you said, he’s under contract.
Plus with all the FA’s on the roster this year, losing another WR would only hurt more.
With CBA being as screwed up as it is right now, and no FA. I wouldn’t be surprised to see BB again next year too….just a thought!
I thought he was pretty good as a PR. He’s not blazingly fast or anything but he seemed to have good vision, and was always reliable catching punts.

Against the grain
If I were a Viking fan the biggest priority I would want to see brought on is talent. Right now the way the roster is organized the Vikings can add talent at any position other than possibly running back. At that point I would want the FO to just evaluate the players as to who is the best football player and take that guy when the team drafts. Same with FA if that happens. Determine who is the best value for the price versus talent and fitting of the scheme run and peruse accordingly. Apart from that nothing and no one should be sacred….well AP gets a pass because he’s AP.
With that in mind though there would be a priority list as well.
1. QB. Everything in the NFL flows from this position and the Vikings not only have found the cubard bare, but there is no plan as well. The answer must be found this offseason or another top 15 pick is in the near future.
2. DT. P. Williams is either too old or gone. Guion is really the only real long term option and he’s still a bit of an unknown. If the Vikings are going to keep playing a Tampa 2 (which is foreseeable with LF as coach) then there needs to be a strong push up the middle to make the whole defensive line work. Some big men in the middle are needed.
3. S. Going hand in hand with dynamic line play in the Tampa 2 are game breaking safeties. These players are critical to making the scheme work (think John Lynch in Tampa’s hey day). Right now the best the Vikings have at that position is acceptable….which is far from good enough. Doesn’t matter if the guy is a ball hawk or a thumper, he just has to make something happen.
4. LT. A guy who is so lazy that he is kicked out of the Pro-Bowl and stupid enough to run a six figure tab when he’s going to be cut of from money for a while is not the guy I want protecting the blind side of the face of the franchise. Add in the fact that he’s on the wrong side of 30, overweight (and still running up said bar tab), and been fighting off injuries all points to the need to look to the future at this critical position.
5. CB. If the Vikings corner backs were going to start a band they would need to be called Winfield and the question marks. No matter what scheme is run a team needs three starting quality corners, or at least three reliable corners. Winfield is getting older and next two on the depth chart are young and have had some injury concerns (both with multiple knee problems which could be bad considering the position).
6. WR. This could quickly drop if Rice can get under contract. If the Vikings lose Rice though this position needs to go into panic mode. I’ve gain crazy respect for Harvin over this past year. The dude can ball…but he’s a bit like a much more successful Reggie Bush. When he gets the ball he can do some dynamic things and the offense is much better for it….he’s just not quite as good as a pure receiver. Watching Childress try to force Harvin into being an outside receiver and working off press man just didn’t seem to work at all. It’s telling about his skill set, but also shows that Harvin is the type of guy who needs to used in the correct way to maximize your investment. In this case ti means keeping two guys who can do the lion share of offensive downs and work on the parameters to lessen the load for Harvin, allowing him to work in plays in the slot and by dynamic for KR/PR’s.
Agreed on a lot of your points.
The Vikings are the oldest roster in the NFL. We have acceptable youth at RB and WR… and that’s it. O-line, D-line, LBs (aside from Greenway), TE, secondary are all aging. QB doesn’t even really exist, but if we’re going to fully accept Webb in that conversation, I guess we at least technically have youth there as well.
It’s too late for this draft, but I would like to see the Vikings go all BB on future drafts, doing whatever it takes to stockpile large amoutns of picks, then use them all as well as can be done on BPAs. FA should largely be used to create stop-gaps so we don’t become the Lions in the interim, but it largely will not help us create any youth movements. If I’m going to say anything nice about the Packers, it’s that they’ve proven that.
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
I would still include WR to that list as well
A team should have three quality receivers in this league. At best the Vikings have two, at worst one. Not to mention that Harvin really should have two guys who can work the outside while he carves up a defense in the slot.
by PackApologist on Feb 27, 2011 2:38 PM CST up reply actions
Except...
a.) I’m really holding out hope on Rice remaining a Viking, and…
b.) Jaymar Johnson continues to hold a spot down. Counting on him might be sippin’ on the purple drank, but he’s gotten quite a few votes of confidence from several key sources. Who knows?
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
No blame there
I’m holding out hope for A.J. Hawk and James Jones so I get where you are coming from there. However as much as I hope that those guys come back, but really when assessing the roster the best a fan can do is hope for the best and assume the worst. The Packers without James Jones needs to draft a receiver. The Vikings without Sidney Rice need to draft one…maybe two since there is some question as to Johnson.
Now a first round pick isn’t necessary, but some mid to late round picks…maybe a FA would definitely help the offense greatly.
by PackApologist on Feb 27, 2011 10:02 PM CST up reply actions
Possibly.
The really big kick in the pants here is that the CBA is preventing FA from happening until AFTER the draft. Normally, we’d know beforehand if Rice is sticking around- now we’ve got to practically fly by the seat of our pants.
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
1. QB 2. OT 3.S 4.CB. 5.C 6. OG 7. DT 8. WR
I would almost put CB on the top of that list since we have to face pass happy teams that are quite good at it just within our own division, but we need to fix our O-line and get safety help. QB is tops because if you look at everyone else in the NFC North they have someone to lead them longterm. To address our needs we need about ten picks this year but we do have good young talent to go with whoever we bring in.
Agreed.
We face Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers twice each a season. And we may face Matt Stafford twice a season too… but we almost might never face him in a season, it’s so hard to tell. But in the NFC North, if you can’t defend against the pass, you’re going nowhere quick.
Nothing's tougher than being a diehard Vikings fan.
Stadium...
… first
then 2. QB
3. Left Tackle
4. Wide Receiver
5. Center
6. Free Safety
7. Weak side LB
8. Full back
9. Tight end (primarily blocking)
Beyond that probably doesn’t make much sense. I’m assuming we have Rice back also.
I should say...
… probably LT not next year, but in the near, near future, like maybe after next season. We could instead go with a guard to replace Herrera. OL is a big priority in my opinion.
