I have been reading many posting's on many sites, especially about the draft. I'm one of those people that loves all the technical chat that goes on around sport, and American sports seem to do that better than anybody. The thing is, i don't really have a full grasp of the intricacies yet and thus am unable to make a reasoned judgement about many-a-thing.
I live in the UK and am a relative novice to the NFL. I ended up a Vikings fan by a happy mix of chance and ignorance, and it is in that same vein that i ask these questions.
One of the things i would love to understand pre-draft is the value of certain positions. Now, i know that QB is hugely important & i think i sorta agree that if there isn't a franchise quality one available then we shouldn't reach with a first-rounder....for what it's worth it seems to me that Dalton, Pounder & Kaerpenick offer just as much in the later picks as Mallet et al do in the first round....but hey, could be completly wrong there. So, let's assume that QB is THE most important position, yet one we won't have a franchise quality player at after the draft, my question becomes....
What is the most important position to have a franchise quality player at if our QB is not top drawer? Is it better to have top receivers to give him easy options & to make the oppo think a bit or is it better to have top protection to give him time to make the harder calls? Once there is an answer to that question, my next question is, given that we don't have top quality franchise players in all those positions, where do we go first?
Similarly, i have read many posts that say the best cure for an ailing offence is an awesome defence. It seems a given that, really, our secondary sucks. Know i have read a lot on this and there seems to be a difference of opinion. Some say we need to upgrade our secondary and this will help our front 7 and some say rubbish, the best way to upgrade your secondary is by having an awesome front 7. Once again, we obviously don't have top franchise players in all these positions, so given our limited picks where would you go first and who would you look at?
One other quicky, how likely is it that Ziggy will splash in FA to get some much needed help? (don't understand any of this CBA stuff so have completely ignored it for the mo)
Finally, what is the real truth? Defence wins Championships - how many times have i read that? yet a franshise QB is the holy grail, so, where should the focus be, offence or defence?
