Why Drafting A QB In The Early Rounds Of The Draft Or At All Would Be A Huge Mistake

The Vikings would be making a huge mistake drafting a QB in the early rounds of the draft or even at all. Yes, we need a quarterback ,but there are no good options in the draft. There are plenty of more safe options through trading such as Kevin Kolb, Kyle Orton, Donovan McNabb, or Carson Palmer that could come in and help us until there is a deeper draft as far as QB's are concerned. Let's look at the options in this years draft. First you have Blaine Gabbert who looked like a good QB in his bowl game ,but let's face it he probably won't fall to us because you have the 49ers, Titans , and Cardinals who are also desperate for a future QB. Really Gabbert is the only QB I would think about taking in the first round if I was the Vikings. Second we have Cam Newton who was very sporadic in his throwing throughout the season and his bowl game. Plus he has a huge ego, which I think the last thing the Vikings need is a drama queen. To me he is simply to much of a risk. Third is Jake Locker who has fallen way down in most people's draft boards and he is probably the most inconsistent player out of the top QB's in the draft. Sometimes he looks great and sometimes he looks awful. Once again way to risky when there are better options through trades. The fourth one is Ryan Mallett who has really hurt his stock with his low intelligence. He is a big guy with a big arm ,but his brain is said to be as small as a peanut. He also has character issues so once again just way to much of a risk for the Vikings especially with better trade options out there. In the later rounds the only guys I could potentially agree to are Pat Devlin, Christian Ponder, or Ricky Stanzi ,but all of them could potentially go as early as the second round besides Stanzi which is still to high for this years draft class. Bottom line if we draft a QB and he doesn't pan out, that sets us back another year or two and wastes another year of A.P.'s career. All these options are just to risky and in my opinion none of them are really worth that risk.

In this years draft we would do ourselves a huge favor by focusing more on secondary and o-line. Let's face it our secondary was one of the worst in the league especially at the safety positions so we would be doing ourselves a huge favor by drafting a corner or safety. Best case scenario Prince Amukamara falls to us at twelve ,but that could be a stretch with the Redskins, Titans, and Cowboys ahead of us who are also in the same need. We could trade up and try to get Patrick Patterson ,but my feelings on that depend on how much we would have to give up to do that. If neither of those options are there we need to replace Mt. Mckinnie because lets face it the mountain is falling. To many times I watched his defender blow right past him (Julius Peppers for one) and destroy Favre. This can't be allowed to happen to the future QB. The Mt. is getting lazy and we need to replace him now. Also I'm not sure if John Sullivan is the answer at center and it pains me to say this as well ,but Hutchinson is getting older so we also need to think about drafting those interior lineman as well. The one other thing that I think would make life a little easier on defense is a blitzing LB. Look at what Clay Matthews has done for the Packers. Think about what we could do with one of those with our defensive line. So for this years draft please Vikings just focus on defense and O-Line. Get a proven QB in a trade; there are plenty of them to go around and hope that the QB's in next years draft are better.
