Dream Offseason

So as I lay around this offseason and hope like hell there will be football next season I can't help of think of all the moves I would be making as a GM for the Vikings.

Star-divide

We could address some of our most perinent team needs with some a couple of shrewd trading during the draft.

The first thing I would do is trade down in the draft from the 12 spot all the to 17 with New England and regroup our 3rd round pick we lost in the Moss deal.

Then with the next move I would make would be to send that 3rd round pick along with a conditional 3rd round pick in next years draft to Cincinnati for Carson Palmer.

That leaves us with the the number 17, 43, 105, 136, 147, 167, 199.

Now what to do with these Picks:

17th-Gabe Carimi-OT-Wisconsin

43rd-Nick Perry-DE-USC

105-199-BPA emphasizing safety and cb and depth on both lines.

So with our first three picks after the trade with New England we end up with and upgrade on the offensive line, a defensive end to replace the Ray Edwards due to his imminent departure, and a QB to lead our team for 5 more years.

Now that the draft is taken care of now to move onto free agency and pending free agents.

By this point I think it's painfully obvious Ray Edwards won't be back next year. I also believe there is a strong possibility that Pat Williams and Ben Leber may be gone as well as the team looks to get younger.  That being said I think the team finds a way to keep Brian Robison, Fred Evans and Ryan Cook as they will be relied on to fill holes created by the departure of some veterans and are reliable backups.

We also resign Mr. Reliable, Ryan Longwell.

As far as Sidney Rice goes, I have no idea how that situation will play out. I pray we find a way to retain his services but he seems to want more than he's worth. I think if we can show we are going to make a splash on the QB market this offseason he'll stay, but it really is a crapshoot.

All the other free agents we have will be left to seek employment elsewhere, these include Tarvaris Jackson, Frank Walker, Lito Shepard, Nafahu Tahi, Eric Frampton, Greg Lewis, and Hank Baskett.

As far as players under contract who have worn out their welcome, I would release Bernard Berrian and Madeiu Williams. They are overpaid and constantly underperforming.

I don't know who on the free agent market we would target but I would take a look at Bob Sanders and OJ Atogwe as we need help at safety. Another enticing free agent is Nmandi Asomugha but I think he signs with someone like New York or New England.

Randy Moss will also be available. ; p

I stopped reading when I saw Palmer for two 3's

If he leaves Cincy (which I still doubt) it’s going to take at least a 1 probably two 1’s to get him out of there.

not only that

But Carimi is more of a RT and I highly doubt the FO is ready to give up on Loadholt already. Plus, Perry isn’t even draft eligible for another year. We could trade that 3rd for Orton or pickup Mcnabb once he’s released and take Watt, Jordan or Kerrigan at 17. Then take Ijalana or Pouncey at 43. Or the best available safety (Moore, Carter). So many ways it could go really.

Pouncey isn't going to be available

at 43. Pouncey won’t be avilable at 23. If we want him, we take him in the first round. There’s no way he’s lasting to the second.

Mine:

I would use the 1st rounder we get when Ray Edwards signs away along with Bryant McKinney and a 4th rounder for Carson Palmer…
I would draft Anthony Castanzo in the 1st
I would draft Christian Ponder in the 2nd
I would sign a RG
I would re-sign Robison
I would bring in Bob Sanders
I would let Edwards walk (obviously; I used the first we tendered on him in trade already)
I would re-sign Sidney if at all possible. If not, I’d go after Santana Moss and possibly switch my 2nd round pick to Greg Little out of UNC
Round 4-7 BPA… Hopefully that FB out of Stanford

Why?

I don’t understand why everyone wants to sell the house for Carson Palmer. A few years ago, I’d have been all for it. But now? A 7-year QB coming off the years he has had since that injury is not worth a 1st, a 4th, and a Pro Bowl LT. That sounds about what the Bengals will ask for him, but in no way is he worth that. So, no thanks. How about we use that 1st rounder we get from Edwards to draft an O-lineman instead, and go QB with our first pick. That sounds like a much better idea.

Because-

The only QB’s worth drafting this year are Ryan Mallet, Christian Ponder, and Baline Gabbert. Gabbert will be gone, and we’d be reaching to take Ponder or Mallet at 12. I’d be fine with Ponder at 12; believe me, but not many other ppl would like that.
I see a lot of good things in Ponder, and if that’s what the coaches see, why wait? He might be gone when we pick in the 2nd. Ryan Mallet could be a stud. Big Ben gets drunk all the time… So what if Mallet does? I have found no proof of these so called “drug” allegations. Mallet or Ponder in the first if we don’t trade for Palmer.

BTW… McKinney was playing nowhere near Pro-Bowl level, and he failed to report to the Pro-Bowl game, so in my mind he is not a Pro-Bowler. He’s slow and stupid. I’d much rather have Anthony Castanzo than McKinney

I know, but he's been voted to the Pro Bowl, hence making him a Pro Bowler.

And while we all hate on him, he’s one of the better LTs in the league. Otherwise he’d have been cut a long time ago. Lots of teams can do worse than having McKinnie on the left side of their line.

And while those may be the only QBs worth drafting, it doesn’t mean you mortgage your better picks to pick up a QB who’s going to be finished in a few years. If the team was built to win this year, I’d be more inclined to say go for it.. but with the departures we’re going to have, and the holes that were exposed last season, we need every pick we can get.
