As you know, the Vikings received some compensatory picks this season... We received extra picks in the 6th & 7th rounds, # 200 and # 235 overall. So you get down into the 6th & 7th rounds, and you know that there's a good chance that these players are just depth, possibly good enough for 2nd string, maybe only practice squad, they could bust, & be cut... Down here, this deep in the draft, you can take a shot, and go with the best athlete available a la Joe Webb.
I read an article a couple weeks ago, and should have shared it earlier... but decided I would hold off, I thought it might be a little more enticing to read with ... countdown... 14 days left until the draft. It mentions 5 players that have questions marks, but have shown exceptional "star-potential"... in my opinion, it would be worth gambling a late round pick on these guys, maybe as early as 4th round.
The article was well written. It made me want the 5 players mentioned... although it's a good chance they will be along par to the average 6th / 7th round picks... The article was written by Don Banks of SI.com. Here is the link: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/don_banks/04/01/nfl-draft-prospects/index.html
Some attributes of the players mentioned:
"receiver who was christened "the next Randy Moss'' when he arrived as a five-star recruit at Florida State in 2005"
"considered a tough and intelligent draft prospect and a potential late-round pick. He's a two-time All-Pac 10 honorable mention selection and was a vital cog in a Stanford offensive line that has helped produce two of the three most prolific rushing seasons in school history."
Let me know what you think in the comments below.
(Per the Poll: I intentionally left out Danny Watkins, as he is a legitimate candidate to be drafted late 1st round / early to mid 2nd round)
