2011 NFL Draft, Day Three - Open Thread
We're about 20 minutes away from the start of the third and final day of the 2011 National Football League Draft, and the Vikings still have some work to do, and plenty of picks with which to do it.
As it stands today, the Vikings have seven picks in the final four rounds of this year's selection meeting. Those picks are as follows:
Round 4, Pick 9 (#106 overall)
Round 5, Pick 8 (#139 overall)
Round 5, Pick 19 (#150 overall; acquired from New York Giants in Sage Rosenfels/Darius Reynaud trade)
Round 6, Pick 7 (#172 overall)
Round 6, Pick 35 (#200 overall; compensatory selection, can not be traded)
Round 7, Pick 12 (#215 overall)
Round 7, Pick 33 (#236 overall; compensatory selection, can not be traded)
I would look for the Vikings to address the secondary and the interior of the offensive line early on, with wide receiver and outside linebacker as other things that need to be addressed. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Vikings take a flier on another quarterback in the late, late going, either.
Some of the bigger names on the board as we move into the third day of the draft are Texas Christian guard Marcus Cannon (who was projected to go already, but was diagnosed with a treatable form of lymphoma a few days before the draft. . .I'd still love for him to be a Viking), North Carolina outside linebacker Quan Sturdivant, Florida safety Ahmad Black, receivers Edmond Gates out of Abilene Christian, Tandon Doss of Indiana, and Greg Salas of Hawai'i, among others.
Keep it tuned right here, folks, as we'll have the Vikings' picks as soon as they happen!

We need to protect Ponder.
I really hope we can get Bolling as I think he can step in at RG on day 1.
love Cannon, Sturdivant, with the4th
Would also throw Edmond Gates and Cecil Shorts in there.

Address safety in free agency
this class is weak & their are a few good safeties in free agency, wouldn’t oppose taking a flier on a guy in the 5th or 6th though
5th round
How about Kendric Burney, or Shiloh Keo.

Day one was disaster . Not in the pick . But in the inability to move up and down the board .
Day two was the pick of champions .
Day three shows a strong board . I agree that to go OL makes the most sense . Yet the overall layout of the board demands that we consider DL if the right guys are available still . Ballard from Iowa visited . After he falls we will see . I projected Love/OT/Alabama at first but as the draft falls into place he may slide to a perfect spot in the fifth . As WR/Paul/Neb may also fall to our spot in the fifth .
I’ll cross my fingers . The question is two OL or DL picks ? Which would serve us best before we resign FAs ?
So what do you guys think about what to do with Webb?
I really feel like if we’re not going with him for starting QB, he’s got way too much talent to waste holding the clipboard at back-up or dicking around with the practice squad as 3rd stringer (if we get McNabb). I would hope that they start his WR conversion soon. It sounds like they’ve decided he’s not a starting QB, so why waste him?
unless they bring in a vet
he will continue to compete for QB

He will be an excellant pick . Looks like and plays like Robison on steroids !
He plays inside and out . Lunch pail kinda guy . He did visit and was a consideration at pick #43 . Know if the board holds together we had Niles Paul /WR/NEB in and depending on how the OL value chart goes I believe that WR is next ? I hope we can patiently wait to get my projected guy at pick #2 in the fifth —-Love/OT/Alabama .
"...like Robison on steroids"
So you mean, like Ray Edwards?
haha
Not at all .
He plays inside and out . He uses his bulk and power . Ray has that quick step and versatility . He will be great in those outdoor games in the trenches and on the road . No knock on Ray . They will look good beside each other .

More proof that Ballard was a smart pick
Mayock just said Ballard was a 2nd round value, and now that’s he’s gone, DT’s left on the board are all 5th round prospects or later.
Vikings got the last good one before the list ran dry.

Lets hope a Minnesota guy gets drafted soon
Iowa DT Karl Klug, i played against him for 2 years back in HS. He at the time was a 6’3 260 pound RB, yes… RB
RBs translate surprisingly well to defensive linemen
after they put on some weight. I know Georgia’s got a guy coming in that is supposed to be a difference maker at DT who played RB in college but is 340 pounds now.
safety
Jeron Johnson from Boise State — 3rd round grade, still on the board. CNN/SI ranks him ahead of 5 other safeties who’ve already been drafted.
Ballard scouting report
PFW’s 33rd ranked player. Raw, versatile, athletic, light footed big man with movement skills and flexibility that cannot be taught. Possesses speed and quickness to thrive as a three technique in a one-gap 4-3 scheme.

Marcus Cannon cancer prognosis
Best available — 2nd round prospect:
“Texas Christian offensive tackle Marcus Cannon has a treatable form of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that will require four treatments of chemotherapy with doctors that have examined his biopsy informing the NFL prospect that he has an over 90-percent chance of a full recovery, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Per the source, the mass is isolated to the pelvic area and it’s the same tumor that was detected in 2006 and initially diagnosed as benign. A retest revealed that the mass has now become cancerous, though.
“He doesn’t have testicular cancer,” the source told National Football Post. "He never had testicular cancer. That was an inaccurate report. Marcus wanted another test and this one found that the mass is cancerous, but it’s a great prognosis.
“With chemotherapy, he should recover well from it. If everything goes well and there are no setbcks, the cancer will be in remission before training camp. The news could have been a lot worse.”
The first treatment is scheduled for Wednesday with subsequent treatments on May 18, June 8 and the last one set for June 29.
Per the source, the latest biopsy was done after teams noticed at the NFL scouting combine that the mass was larger and three teams requested a new biopsy.
Cannon has been projected as a second-round draft target.
“Marcus feels good about it,” the source said.. “We feel good about it. All 32 teams have been informed of the results.”"
Still there in the 5th round?

BPA is not a bad thing.
Your fantasy football expert since Jerry Rice's rookie year.
Not at all a bad thing
But in recent years, they have made a number of late round trades that cost them draft picks, and cancelled out some of the perceived value in their picks
This year, they are staying put everywhere and getting the BPA for actual bargains
I don't think that's anything to do with the Ponder pick
I think it’s more to do with Childress not being in the draft room.
this is the same guy
That got rid of Tony Richardson in favor of Nafahu Tahi. He clearly had issues with man crushes.
had to bring that up?
I’ve never understood Nefarius Tahi
Swapping Rudolph for Tahi in the starting lineup
That alone makes Rudolph the best pick in the draft…
I think everyone gets glowing reviews on later round picks.

Ponder versus Newton
Cam, what are you planning to do now?
“I need a vacation”
Christian, what are you planning to do now?
“I want to get up to Minnesota and get my hands on the playbook and learn the system. Get to know the players too”
I love it
the vacation comment was his best since “icon and entertainer”
I hate calling players future busts, because I’d be happy to see them all do well.
But Newton? I really believe he’ll struggle. At least until he matures.
Yea I noticed that too
“A well deserved vacation”
I know the draft is hard on prospects, but if that tires you out, you’ll have a hard time getting through a season.
I really don’t have high hopes for Newton.
I think he'll be long gone before he matures
Talented but his head is not in the right place. Too much work and dedication is required for him to succeed and he ain’t got it.
He said he was taking his mother on a vacation
because she deserved one.
I think that sentiment is a lot less harmless than what has been taken out of context.

Demarcus Love
Love is an experienced offensive lineman with great size and a lot of starts under his belt at a variety of spots up front. Can be a road-grading, in-line run blocker who can blow defenders off the ball, but must improve his awareness while playing in space. In pass protection, he can have a tough time with speed rushers but does a nice job dealing with blitzers and creative defensive line play. A versatile prospect with plus size and good intangibles, Love could be selected as high as the second round in April.

Still need a WR - Armon Binns, 6'3", 208 lbs
Biography: Two-year starter awarded all-Conference honors after his junior and senior seasons. Led the team in receiving as a senior with career numbers of 75/1101/10. Junior totals included 61/1191/11.
Positives: “Possession receiver with good size and consistent hands. Fluid release off the line, comes back to the ball out of breaks and extends his hands, offering the quarterback a nice target and catching the ball away from his body. Displays good eye/hand coordination, effectively adjusts to the errant throw, and makes plays in traffic. Always on the same page as his quarterback. Is a solid downfield blocker”
Negatives: Lacks a second gear and can?t stretch the field vertically. Doesn?t get off the line quickly. Shows little burst in his game. Prone to the occasional lapse in concentration.
Analysis: Binns has been one of the better receivers in the Big East the past two seasons and has enough size and skill to find a way onto an NFL roster as a fourth receiver.
Projection: 4th round

I'd be happy with all o-line if they don't like the remaining WR's
Just to be sure a couple of them make the roster
I'm down with that
two guys I could also get on board with are
Powe DT- Ole Miss
Herzlich LB – Boston College
Burney is still available. Not sure why he is falling.

Alright, this is great
Packers just took a LB that is 5’10" tall and 230 lbs.
That made me laugh. Maybe they can convert him to kicker.
Sounds like Ed McDaniel
Let loose the hogs of war!
Dogs of war..
Whatever farm animal of war, Lana...
Would love to see Adrian Peterson
run over the Packers new LB.
But it won’t happen, ‘cuz he won’t see the field
if the Vikings take a reciever
Give me Dane Sanzenbacher from The Ohio State
We have three picks left.
#‘s 200, 215 & 236. Dart throwin’ time.
Your fantasy football expert since Jerry Rice's rookie year.
We need a linebacker real bad
Ponder has no idea how much pressure the fans will put on him. But he will succeed.
Are you sure?
Erin Henderson and Jasper Brinkley have looked good coming off the bench, and they’re young
EH and Jasper do not impress me as NFL impact type LBs.
Good, but not what we need.

Look at the size of that ring on McElroy’s finger

Whoever drafts him will get great value
looks like he already has his Super Bowl ring
Is there another gem in this draft?
I bet our scouts know who it is. I really expected us to package some of the 6th round picks. But we got a S/CB. A guard. And a center.
Can’t complain about BPA or Need based strategy. Whatever it is it looks good.

But it is geting difficult to pick now. Diamonds in the rough so to speak.
Although that is true from mid third round on.
But Spielman said he needed actual players in this draft. Not picks that will be cut.
I wondered what he meant by that but I think it is apparent he is operating a touch differently this year.

A lot of teams are saying that this year
because they didn’t get the pre-draft free agency signing period, and they might not get the next one, either.
The CBA situation if forcing teams to make sure they draft players who make the rosters — more safe picks, less high risk/high reward reaches.
I agree
This is much better than last year. Well, we still have hope for Cook, Gerhart, and the rest who are still on the team. That draft class didn’t shine their rookie year.
This group looks a little more promising from the get-go.

Not sure I agree.
I liked our last class of late round picks. Chilly should never have let the LB go.

They already drafted a smart QB in Ponder
They should find a real dummy for the next pick
Yes, I don’t know why we would want two rookie quarterbacks to develop at the same time.

OK, I just didn’t want to jinx anything.

Yes
But do we need him at this point?
We could use an OLB and a WR, or a big space-eating NT.

LB?

Powe could become an effective run-stopping, two-gap defensive tackle or possibly a 3-4 nose tackle due to his tremendous size and lower body strength. Usually requires a double team in the running game. Does more than just eat space, he can penetrate and also make some plays outside the box. Can push the pocket with his bull rush but needs to polish up his technique and moves. Like many other bid-bodied DT’s, needs to watch his conditioning level. Gets plays off and becomes less dominant against the run later in games. Powe could entice a team to select him as high as the second round.
No more developement QBs
We have Bomar. We need a Vet like Billy Volek to help out Ponder and that is that.

Ponder is too smart
He’d probably have to help out Volek
Smart enough to know how to learn from his elders.

He’s slow, but he might be good enough. I say get him. Or Jabara Williams.

No problem
Any good linebacker with potential.
Great story but I want whoever we take being a real playmaker.
