Potential Undrafted Free Agent Prospects (For When The Time Comes)
There will be undrafted free agency in the National Football League. . .eventually. We don't know when it's going to be, but it will eventually happen.
So, with that in mind, the folks from SB Nation's amazing Kansas City Chiefs site, Arrowhead Pride, have compiled this sortable table for your 2011 Undrafted Free Agent Prospects. Feel free to peruse it and talk about who you might like the Vikings to target whenever this legal mess gets cleared up and the mad rush of signings can begin.
That table. . .after the jump.
The list of 2011 undrafted free agents, according to NFL.com. Click the header of a column to sort it:

As far as I recall a lot of people were very high on this center just after the combine.. A lot of vikings fan even wanted to spend a 2nd round pick on this fellow.. Also lets see if we can target Gurlet the WR he should be decent
Win, Loss or Tie Vikings fan till I Die
Which teams will abuse the no contact and not get caught again . This second lottery needs to be better policed in the future .
I see Lutrus/LB/CONN , Will Hill/CB/FLA nd Clay/FB/WISC as the first possibles . Then I would love to see the two tall WRs from LSU and S. Carolina , Notre Dame’s NT . Duenta from NC , Herzlich , Meahl is scrappy , the two TEs from the state of Iowa schools , McDaniel/SS/CLEM , Pierre Allen/DL/NEB and even the 5-9 other CB from NC ..
Agreed...
We’re in a situation where we should bring a surplus of talent and see what falls onto the roster…I like the size of all of the guys you put up there. We need a big, mean, and ferocious team if we want to get back to winning.
This is the Black and Blue division right?
SKOL VIKES!!!!
Josh Gatlin, CB, North Dakota State
40 time at 4.37, looked good in Texas vs the Nation with an int and 3 tackles, 6’1" and 196 pounds.
i agree
Lockette is the name that really jumped out at me from that list. i had him down as mid round talent and would personally love 2 c him as a viking!
also does any1 know what happened 2 Fred Rouse, the 1 time nicknamed new Moss. i know he had loads of off field issus but heard he was tryin the draft and could be worth an invite 2 camp, esp if god forbid we lose Rice!!!
The biggest Viking fan in the UK!!!
Jeff Maehl, Sanzenbacher, Toliver, Herzlich, and Burney
Jeff Maehl, 6-1, 190 WR from Oregon. Whenever I watched Oregon all I saw was this guy making big catches and whenever the ball did come his way he caught it. Dane Sanzenbacher, 5-11, 182 WR from Ohio State. Very reliable receiver that is going to catch the ball when it is thrown to him. Hard worker, a bit small but will make a great slot receiver. Terrence Toliver, 6-4, 212 WR from LSU. Don’t know much about him, but he is tall and has good speed. Wouldn’t hurt to give him a shot. Mark Herzlich, 6-4, 244 from Boston College. What is not to like about this guy, cancer survivor and a hard worker. I think he can be a starting linebacker in the near future and if anything he’ll be a great special teamer. Kendric Burney, 5-9, 186, CB from North Carolina. Very good cover corner, only downside is his size and his slow 40 time. But can be a number 3 or 4 cornerback.
I know that we don’t need another running back, but we should take a look at Derrick Locke, 5-8, 188 from Kentucky. With a 4.4 40 time he could be the next change of pace back like Darren Sproles and if anything he can challenge for the kick returner position.
Hopefully the NFL will get something done soon, because there is still plenty of quality players left.
These are the guys I mentioned in the day3 open thread at the end of the draft.
Deandre McDaniels – S – Clemson
Jeron Johnson – S – Boise St.
Terrence Toliver – WR – LSU
Darvin Adams – WR – Auburn
Ian Williams – DT – Notre Dame
Zach Hurd – G – UConn
I would also like to add
South Carolina’s TE, Weslye Saunders.
He got in trouble with the NCAA and had to miss last season, but he was a solid blocker for the Gamecocks at 6’5, 270 and was a reliable pass-catcher for them in his junior season (32 catches for 350 yards and 3 TDs). He might be a solid pickup and could fight his way to the number 3 TE spot on the team behind Shank and Rudolph.
First off, Kai Forbath
JUUUUUUUST in case Ryan Longwell doesn’t get resigned. Of course, I’m seriously ticked if that’s what happens, but insurance is never a bad thing. Besides, you could just cut Forbath the second Longwell returns.
After that- see all those guys with ‘C’ or ‘OL’ as their position? Yeah, I’ll take… ALL of them. Why not. Maybe we’ll find one or two who can make an impact.
Ah, the failed attempt at returning Moss home. It was like '98 and '09 were about to make sweet, sweet love and give us a glorious '10 child.
www.dailynorseman.com- THE place for true Viking fanatics.
Mark Herzlich will be interesting to watch, no matter where he ends up
He was too risky to spend a draft pick on with his health concerns, but someone will take a chance on him with a no risk contract. Whether it’s with us, or someone else, I’m gonna be watching his career with great interest.
Not to keep beating the Ohio State drum
But I am STUNNED G Justin Boren didn’t get drafted. He was all B1G, was a steam roller as a run blocker, and was decent pass blocking.
And John Clay, the Wisky RB didn’t get drafted? Wow.

I vote that the Vikings grab Jenoris Jenkins (CB- Florida)
In this year’s supplemental draft. Kid has all the talent in the world, but can’t stay away from the green stuff. Sounds like another Gator on this squad that has worked out very well (Harvin, Percy).
I have a conspiracy theory that the Vikings Front Office...
actually reads the DN’s posts because of the draft picks made (Fusco, Ballard, Rudolph).
With that said, they should:
Dump:
1. Berrian
2. Baskett
3. Madieu
4. Frank Walker (FA anyway)
5. A few other guys I can’t think of right now. Let Sid go, not because I want him to go, but because I think he has one foot out the door (Thanks you asshole Rosenhaus) and one foot on a banana peel.
Replacements from the land of the undrafted:
1. Tolliver (Big program in LSU, Big Reciever, who is fast and mean, and actually knows how to run a route. I think this guy can be reeeeaaalll good)
2. Gurley (SC WR, who was projected to go as early as the 2nd and 3rd rounds in some drafts. Why? because he is fast, really fast, and can actually catch a ball…and yes, that’s a shot at Berrian).
3. Herzlich (What’s not to like, he beat Cancer, I’m sure he can beat lineman and he hits hard. I heard there are reports that he has already cut 5/10 of second off his forty time, as he regains his legs….feel good, high character, and a leader on the field.)
4. Jerrial King (Check out THE scouting report. This guy is a road grader at OL. Another guy that most thought would get alot of looks in the draft. I have heard about questionable character, but I guess BIG MONEY might change his outlook….if the reports are even true.)
5. Duenta Williams (Duenta Robinson anybody? Well no, but the first name is the same, and this guy is fast, and big…and the only negative I have read on his scouting report is that he likes to play centerfield and hit people too hard. Hmmmm, that’s a novel thought, a FS that actually tackles people.)
I think we are creating a team for the future who may actually astound currently. I have harped incesently that we need to return to the Purple People Eater days, and build a big, fast and mean defense….Anybody with me?
SKOL VIKES!!!
And one more...Scott Lutrus (LB)...
Out of Connecticut. Read his scouting report from the link above.
Was expected to be a mid-round draft pick, and I’m not sure why he fell. He was a stud at the combine, had good vision and speed to both sides of the field, and could replace Leber within a few years…
SKOL VIKES!!!
McDaniel had some off field issues
involving allegations of domestic assault, I believe. There are also questions about his raw athleticism and whether it can compete in the NFL.
Don’t know why the two UNC DBs fell. Burney is undersized, I guess, but I saw a lot of shorter DBs go in the later rounds and that wouldn’t explain William’s fall. I know they both missed some time last season so maybe that has something to do with it.
Names to follow up on
Joe Lefeged
Pierre Allen
Brandon Bair
Ian Williams
Ryan Winterswyk
Jerrard Tarrant
Justin Boren
Kai Forbath
Mark Herzlich
Scott Lutrus
Jarriel King
Noel Devine
Tori Gurley
Terrance Toliver
*I’m 99% positive that Steve Schilling was drafted.
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."
Ian Williams
He’ll keep the Williams wall intact. Herzlich, Lockette, Burney and Bartholomew. If we can get even two of these guys I would be please.
My votes go to
Kendric Burney. Short and slow, but is a playmate and fits the cover2.
Deandre Brown. Great RZ target at 6’6" 233#
Ricardo Lockette. Good size, great speed, and potential.
Couple of safeties. Value there according to most experts.
Mark Herzlich. As already stated, what’s not to love about this kid.
As for the O-line. I really like the two kids we drafted in Love and Fusco.

oops!
Damn auto spell. Burney is a playmaker not playmate.

Hopefully the kid i graduated
with in High School can make it onto an NFL squad or get a try-out. Kid loves to lay the wood and physical as.. well.. a bull.
Wish List
Herzlich, it just makes sense for this kids story to play out this way. Darrin walls at CB, whatever it takes to bump asher allen from the team. Lastly, i want maehl, lockette, gurley, or murdock to sniff a tryout. At the end of the year, let sid walk, and bring Michael Floyd back home. Yeah im an nd homer.

OK, after some research, here are my key hopeful acquisitions.
G- Zach Hurd, Connecticut. Rivals.com remarks that he went undrafted primarily for questions in the pass-blocking department, but also noted that he was very much the road-grader for the run game. While pass blocking is obviously a key part of any succesful O-lineman, I’d like to take a flier on him and see if we can’t develop that part of his game. At least he’s got the part down for the AP attack.
C Tim Barnes, Missouri. Nflmocks.com lists his ‘pro’ primarily as his athleticism as well as his pass protection skills, as well as a high intelligence. The con, however, was that his technique was a bit poor, leading him to the occasional moment where he was overpowered by a bigger, stronger DT/ NT. It also mentioned that a lack of leg strength to anchor him might hurt him in the NFL, but I would like to know how much was coachable technique flaws and how much was actual physical weakness. Now, yes, we DID already draft C Brandon Fusco, but I wouldn’t mind bringing in two centers into camp for competition. Centers are a versatile group and can be used as backups in the guard position, and we could see if the loser of the competition could at least provide their services in that department. Worst case scenario, bringing two centers into camp would send a clear message to John Sullivan and Ryan Cook- poor blocking coupled with snapping problems does not bode favorably for your long-term career with the Minnesota Vikings.
K Kai Forbath, UCLA. As I mentioned before, I would just for my own comfort like a little insurance should the worst happen regarding Ryan Longwell- that we don’t, for whatever reason, re-sign him, or if he in fact just up and retires football in favor of golf. While I would still prefer Longwell over Forbath, Forbath DID have 85 field goals in college with a success rate of 84.1%. He was also 10 for 13 career from behind the 50 yard line- that’s not bad at all. I think there will be some competition for his services, and again, assuming the contract doesn’t get ridiculous because of this, the Vikings should enter into that fray. Just in case.
(Dis)Honorable Mention- As In, Who I DON’T Want:
SS Deandre McDaniel, Clemson. We need help at safety, and McDaniel as a senior had 48 tackles, four interceptions, four sacks, and as a junior also notably returned eight interceptions for touchdowns. Could be a developmental guy, right? Well, Rivals.com reports that the knock on him was that he was not an ‘elite athlete’ and that he ‘had some off-field issues’. Further research shows that these issues were more than just smokin’ weed or minor theft, however- he apparently beat the living crap out of his girlfriend. Someone like that is exactly the kind of guy I don’t want to be on the Vikings’ squad.
Once upon a time, some guys from this group called "Navy SEAL Team Six" flew in on some helicopters into Pakistan. 40 minutes later... they flew out with the dead corpse of Osama bin Laden, with two bullet holes in his hea... wait, what? They also burned the mansion he was staying at to the ground?
AWESOME!
Daily Norseman
My Wish List (and sorry so long but Vikes need a lot
RB
Mario Fannin – Some scouts/sites have him as a blind runner. He is fast and has run 1.51 in the first 10 yards. He is big at about 5’10 and 230 lbs. Have him run in front of AP to make a bigger hole.
Nic Grigsby – Had a good Arizona Pro Day. Ran a 4.38/40 and had a 43 1/2 vertical ! When AP breaks out a couple of his runs, stick Grigsby in to keep pressure on and give AP a breather. Toby Gerhart is not the answer.
FB
Patrick DiMarco – TE Saunders was suspended all last year and Dimarco was used as TE as well as FB to block for Marcus Lattimore. He was also used as H-back. He did whatever was asked of him. I like the blue-collar attitude.
WR
I have been going through the available undrafted free agent receivers. I will do more research on them but it seems like a lot of them are 6’2 to 6’6 weighing in at 215 to 235. I feel that in the pros that they will be schooled by 5’9 CBs. They will look great one play and totally out of the rest of the game. But if I had a choice it would be Jeff Maehl. The kind of receiver that would go across the middle and get hit really hard, hang on to the catch, get up and say “Is that all you got?”. But if not Maehl, probably Gurley. Vikings seem to have South Carolina receivers (Williamson,Rice,Gurley?, and Alshon Jeffery next year).
TE
Andre Smith – I have been pounding the table on this guy. He’s 6’4 270 lbs. He only caught 20 passes but 5 were for touchdowns inside the red zone (nice safety valve?). Also he could protect our number 12 pick. He had to run block for Tyrod Taylor,Ryan Williams and Darren Evans with their almost 2000 yards among them.
Collin Franklin – This kid caught a couple TDs but he also has nice after-the-catch moves.
SS-FS-CB
Joe Lefeged-Great at Combine. ST
Nate Williams-Tackling machine
Davonte Shannon-41 1/2 vert
Byron Landor-Another tackling machine
Andrew Rich-“slow”? Always around the ball
Mana Silva-8 INTs. Is that a misprint???
Suaesi Tuimaunei-Tough, good combine
Tim Atchison-Captain of Baylor centerfield
Ryan Hill-replaced D Van Dyke last season
James Dockery-Very good Pro Day
Jason Teague-Damn that TCU defense
Darrin Walls-intercepted Andrew Luck !
Demond Washington-just don’t cover AjGreen
That is all for now. I will offense and defense line next post. I will check more into the WRs
by Stromboly on May 6, 2011 11:21 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
My wish list continued.....
OT
Willie Smith-He pass protected the high octane East Carolina offense
DJ Young-Good all around blocker
Jarriel King-He looked good with his inside guard of Garrett Chisolm. They always seemed to be running downfield when Marcus Lattimore was stopping and cutting back inside.
OG
Ray Dominguez-He was said to outperforming Love(maybe because he was hurt?). This would continue a friendly competition.
Garrett Chisolm-He has looked good in pass protection and run blocking for Lattimore. He has had to play through heartbreak. He lost both his parents within 8 to 9 months. This may inspire him.
Michael Huey-Nice blocking and relentless.
Butch Lewis-Tyron Smith stole the show. This may have put a chip on his shoulder. This may give him great motivation.
C
Bring in a couple more undrafted centers. Drafting the kid from Slippery Rock was a good start. Having a couple more in camp means Sullivan and Cook are at the end of their rope. It is time to put up or get cut.
DT
Ian Williams-I think he could upgrade the Vikes defense just by standing on the sideline.
by Stromboly on May 8, 2011 9:05 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
My last of my wish list (I promise!)
I did a little digging on some receivers that I have saw play and ones that were on draft sites list of the best of undrafted players. He is just a few WRs I came up with.
WR
Jeff Maehl
Dane Sanzenbacher
These two are kind of in the same mold. Not this biggest, fastest or will stretch you down the field. But they are the gritty type that will make the tough catch to keep the sticks moving even if that means taking the big hit.
Kamar Aiken-UCF
Not really sure why this guy had only 2 TDs this year but 9 the year before…hmm??
Terrence McCrae-Ohio
Ohio was mainly a run offense. McCrae was top receiver with only 500 yards. But he scored 9 TDs. Most were short passes. At 6’4 and 200 lbs. I am assuming they fade route jump balls.
Kris Adams-UTEP
I watched this 6’3 195 lb. kid play in the bowl game against Brigham Young. He had only three catches but they were all for TDs. He looked amazing. But then he had anothe pass thrown to him in end zone for easy catch and missed. Concentration can be learned I guess.
Finally the last area…Special Teams
Shaky Smithson-can return kicks and especially punts. Not the fastest but can give good field position. This Baltimore native took legal guardianship over his 16 year old brother to get him to Utah (trust me, I’ve been to Balt. good move Shaky)
Demond Washington-I mentioned him before but he can return kicks. The Vikings must have soft spot for 5’9 180 lb. CBs. Just don’t have him cover AJ Green!!!!!! He got burnt .
Michael Morgan-USC
Alex Wujciak-Maryland
Victor Aiyewa-Washington
These linebackers are tacklers (and since Wahington Huskies had no front line, every seconary player had to be a tackling machine). They will get practice by special teams.
Shaun Draughn-North Carolina I saw him in bowl game. I thought he was their regular starter. Instead with all the injuries (and suspensions) he reall looked good.
Vai Taua-Nevada
Matt Asiata-Utah
Both in the same mold 5’10 225. Both can block and catch.
Well that concludes my very long wish list. Most of these players come with different stories of heart break (check Mistral Raymond’s or Garrett Chisholm). Others were snubbed from the NFL combine. Some of the other ones were overshadowed or overlooked as they play their position. Others have families to support now. All this should give the Vikings possible good players with chips on both shoulders. That’s what they need. Thank you for reading my wish list ranting from a Viking fan through and through. Skol! and Salud!
