Off-Topic: Osama Bin Laden CONFIRMED DEAD

Yeah, it ain't football. . .it's way, way bigger than football.

Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, has been killed, according to numerous sources on television, radio, and the internet.

The United States has been in pursuit of Bin Laden over the course of the past decade, and they have finally gotten their man.

Since two members of our staff here have supported operations in the Middle East in the post-9/11 military (Ted and myself), and I know that we have many other veterans that read our site on a daily basis and contribute to it, it's time to give some serious props to the men and women of the United States military and all of the coalition forces around the world that have cooperated to make this possible. It's not a be-all or an end-all to terrorism or anything like that, but it's still a pretty significant event.

Feel free to talk about this in the comments, but try to keep it as non-political as possible. It doesn't matter what side of the aisle you're on or what your political beliefs are. . .this is a momentous day in American history.

All Too Conveniently Timed

There have been reports that Osama was dead months ago. I just find it interesting they wait until Obama’s approval rating was as the lowest and just a few days after the birth certificate “incident”.

I never trusted anything the government or media has told me, this piece of news is no different.

After the research I've done

I’ve learned to view things a little differently. I don’t argue that it’s a success for this nation to bring this criminal to justice, but I see the situation as a bigger part of other events and I understand it for what it is and not what CNN and a political tool tells me it is.

Have fun with the all-consuming hellfire and sorry about the lack of adoring virgins, UBL

but you deserve what you’re getting pimp!

Funny thing is seeing all the lefties on TV this morning suddenly defending the formerly cruel and unusual “War on Terror” and the formerly abusive American Military.

Hats off to our Special Forces for once again showing us we can do anything we put our mind to. Fight to win.

by Bodysuit Man on May 2, 2011 7:09 AM CDT reply actions

Why don't you thank that "lefty" president for killing Bin Laden?

A few years ago the press asked George W Bush about capturing Osama bin Laden and he replied , “I just don’t spend that much time on it, to be honest”.

This is the same guy who was going to “smoke him out”. HA

by JethroBoViking on May 2, 2011 11:09 AM CDT up reply actions

I thank the lefty president for not getting in the way of the brave men who actually did the killing

With the intelligence he was given, Obama had no choice but to go ahead with the mission that was planned by our intelligence community and our military.

Remember a few years ago when Bush was still president and we had one of Bin Laden’s courier’s phones tracked, but the New York Times ratted us out and told our enemies what we had done? We could have had him a long time ago but the lefty news media ruined it because they hated Bush.

Obama has been against every piece of the puzzle in the war on terror. He has been against all of the methods we use to garner valuable intelligence from detainees, he wanted to shut down the prison at Guantanamo Bay, he and his Justice Department struggled mightily with the decision to give detainees trials in our country (some of which would have exposed intelligence information that would have endangered brave men and women fighting the war on terror), and his administration has even stopped using the term “terrorist” to describe terrorists.

If Obama uses this event to bolster his reelection campaign (and is there any doubt he will since this is the only event of his horrible presidency that anyone would actually want to own up to), he’ll actually be running in favor of everything he ran against the first time around. I’m sure you’re fine with that dichotomy, but think for a moment about what a hypocrite he is to take credit for what he has consistently opposed.

But it makes perfect sense when we realize that he is the same man who opposed the war in Iraq, and promised to bring our troops home from Afganistan and close down Gitmo. Now, he’s basically extending the Bush policies but nobody thinks this should be questioned.

by Bodysuit Man on May 2, 2011 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

well it’s a good thing i didn’t come to a football blog to gain any political insight.

by danny lloyd on May 2, 2011 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I think we agree on something.

I don’t care much for Obama either because he seems to be kissing the right wing’s ass every chance he gets. Why don’t we use a little bit of Republican Ron Paul’s foreign policy ideas and mind our own business. We might not get ourselves into so much trouble.

As far as opposing the war in Iraq, did you support sending 4,000 plus of our brave and precious soldiers to die for “weapons of mass destruction” that did not exist? George Bush made jokes about that in 2004. (look it up) Invading a country should always be a last resort. Especially a country that couldn’t even get a plane in the air.

How do you know they didn’t already have him or his body prior to this announcement?

by cdubs3201 on May 2, 2011 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Just on the actual topic.

I remember where I was when the towers hit – I was actually preparing for my final exams. I couldn’t do any studying for a couple of days because I was so consumed with what was happening, even though I’d never been to New York or even America.

When I finished school, I actually enlisted in the Australian army but was declared medically unfit (old shoulder and knee injuries, and carpal tunnel). I joined Customs instead because I felt it was the next best thing I could do to serve my country and try prevent a similar event from happening.

When I heard about the news today, I again knew exactly where I was and I’m pretty sure that I’ll never forget that either.

In the extremely slim chance that any of the SEALs in question are Vikings fans and read this site – thank you. The world thanks you.

Now we gotta do what we can to wipe out the rest of the extremists.

I was on my way too work

Which is at a TV station here in Albuquerque. Though I don’t work in the news portion of things, needless to say, not much got done that day. Some of the images that came down from a few raw satellite feeds are permanetly burned into my memory, and for awhile, had trouble sleeping from said images. No, nothing that ever made it on air obviously, though at times, horrific as it sounds, I think some images should be to remind people what had happened.

While some have said this was just another fight between the U.S. and terrorist’s, I think it showed that no matter where, and what country, any of us can get hit by these people.

Thanks for serving your country, and to my family, friends and everyone serving our country. Nice to see there are many out there who realize we ALL are in this together.

Great Day to be an American

Thanks Ted and Chris. I too have deployed three times to Afghanistan and Iraq since 9/11 and was fortunate to survive without injury. It’s always good to cut off the head of the snake and I will toast them all tonight with some single malt. But there’s still much work to be done as we go into the spring offensive. Please remember that while we’re celebrating this great achievement , many of our brothers and sisters are making the ultimate sacrifice this very day. Prayers and well wishes out to their families and to all those who lost someone on 9/11 and since.

Better late than never, but a great day nonetheless.......

should have been taken out 20 years ago when he was in the crosshairs. Too bad there was not the political fortitude to do so. Thousands of lives would have been spared had we acted in what was truly our national interest. African embassies, the first WTC attack, the Cole, etc., were more than enough reason to take him out. Never mind he officially declared war on us as well.
Now it seems like more of a hollow victory, since he is/was seemingly irrelevant.
The Navy rocks, regardless of the details.

by Jepp The Viking on May 2, 2011 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

NO SIR.....

ALL of the above mentioned incidents, and I left the Khobar Towers out, were carried out under the orders of Bin Laden. They ALL preceded 9/11. He claimed responsibility, all the while declaring war on the USA. It is a fact that he could have been taken out before all that has occurred that has changed the shape and direction of our nation. It most certainly is second guessing, but, NOT hindsight.
If anything, we are now at halftime, to borrow the term, in our war against the ideas that Bin Laden embodied. It is far from over.
It pleases me to no end that the dirt bags that worshipped him cannot build a shrine to his memory, since the mission also included making his remains fish food.

Two things to remember.

Osama bin Laden was kind of our ally when he was fighting the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

Bill Clinton tried to blow him up with a cruise missle, but was not getting much support in D.C. All anyone cared about at that time was impeachment for a blow job and a blue dress.

Not hollow

because we now sent a message: Hurt us? We will f****** kill you. It takes ten years? Yeah. We will STILL f****** kill you.

Osama bin Laden may not have been in charge like he was pre-9/11, but he was still a potent symbol: that you could cause the greatest attack on American soil in history- targeting civilians, no less- and escape our wrath. Now that symbol no longer exists… see above.

Once upon a time, some guys from this group called "Navy SEAL Team Six" flew in on some helicopters into Pakistan. 40 minutes later... they flew out with the dead corpse of Osama bin Laden, with two bullet holes in his hea... wait, what? They also burned the mansion he was staying at to the ground?

No doubt

he was a wily fox. Few will say that bin Laden was ‘dumb’- he really wasn’t, which was what made him so damn dangerous. Of course… I do wonder about how he was able to shack up in a mansion a few miles out from the Pakistani capital… hmmm…
