Tarvaris Jackson to the Seahawks?
Per the Seahawks SBNation blog:
http://www.fieldgulls.com/2011/5/10/2158511/tavaris-jackson-plan-e
Schefter:
"Seattle fans probably won't like this and Minnesota might be amused by it, but I wouldn't discount Minnesota Vikings free-agent quarterback Tarvaris Jackson; he worked with the Seahawks' new offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and could pick up Seattle's new offense quickly after this lockout ends, whenever it ends. But Seattle will have to come up with someone, because Whitehurst alone will put the Seahawks at a disadvantage."
Dilfer:
(Darrell) Bevell, now in Seattle, always had an affinity for Tarvaris Jackson. And believe it or not, I think that might be the play here for theSeattle Seahawks -- I think it might be trying to get Tarvaris Jackson from Minnesota. They've always liked him, they liked his starter potential. (Bevell) tried to make it happen for him in Minnesota and that might be the direction they're trying to go. I don't like that plan, but if that's their plan and that's what they're trying to do, then more power to them.
When I was a player, ... I always kind of started seeing how teams really believe that they could make something out of a guy, that they fall in love with him early on, a coach falls in love with him early on, and regardless of public opinion you're going to make it happen. As I've done the research the last 24 hours, I've made some calls, I've wrapped my brain around it, I think that's something that might be in their plans.
Anyone want to head over there and give them some of our perspective? I apparently have to wait 2 days before I can post at their website.
I don't hate the Seahawks, although I dislike that they made the playoffs. If he goes, best of luck to him. But, he probably shouldn't go.

Makes a lot of sense.
The Vikings made it clear a few months back TJack would no longer be a Viking, and he’s too talented to just go home. He’s going SOMEWHERE. The Seahawks might not be getting Hasselbeck back, and they didn’t draft a QB. So for their new OC to reach out and scoop up his old QB, who’s now a FA- well, yeah. It totally makes sense.
Dear Yahoo! Sports: Please stop using that picture of Brett Favre holding his shoulder on the sidelines whenever you write about the Vikings. That is all, thank you.
Daily Norseman
the fans dont really have an opinion on jackson
they assume that bevell must see something in him to bring t-jack over
True
but that was OUR problem before and it’s going to be THEIR problem now. Well, in the weak NFC West, TJack might actually be able to play over there. He’s actually probably better than Whitehurst so what’s the difference. Not like they’re going to have to pay him a whole lot to get his services. He would work for a couple of years at least.
Skol!
we assumed the same thing..
look where that got us… Mossgate, Favreageddon and the Childress addendum.. Nothing good comes from assumptions.. Seattle itself may be sucked into a whirling vortex of suckitude because of this one move.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
let him go
I liked TJack, and hope to see him succeed, but he didn’t fit the locker room, never got the respect of the team, and couldn’t bring them to win when he had the chance. A fresh start might be good for him
Well, he's already been let go
This post is only relevant to the Vikings insofar as he’s a recent former player.
I was just hoping that some people could give the Seahawks SBNation blog some of their perspective, seeing as I have to wait 2 days before I can comment.
Filbert
Good point about the locker room. None of us knew how good we’d really be and then we got Peterson and all of a sudden our team had super bowl goals and TJack just wasn’t ready for that. People looked at him as the one person holding the team back. Not like he had to put the entire team on his back to win, but he did have the weight of the entire team bearing down on him.
Skol!

good luck where ever you go t-jack!
all i can say is this is off season and teams aren’t “supposed” to be talking to players now anyway.
this kind of smells like espn-enquirer stuff to fill out the lull in actual news.
as for the seattle fans, i wouldn’t want to bum them out with a lot of t-jack bashing. plus, i just checked the fanpost link povided, and it appears that the “field gulls” have a pretty good handle on what t-jack is all about.
Wow, from what I can see...
There may be a sadder group of fans over at the Fieldgulls SB blog. Reading the comments was about 60% or more in favor of T-Jack. Only a few folks were adamantly against it. Maybe Favre can go to Seattle and play next, sounds like they might take him based on their lack of QB confidence over there.
I always liked T-Jack, and his numbers for the first two years were average, but the intangibles are what I finally gave up on. I wish him well, but bet he carries a clipboard for the rest of his career. I will admit, I’d love to see him get another chance (along with Alex Smith, Leinart, and many others) and I wish him well.
Skol Vikings.
Well
They didn’t really see him play, so they sort of assume that he wasn’t given a chance at Minnesota. People who saw him play seem adamantly against him.
But, that might be like saying that JaMarcus Russell wasn’t given enough time.
jamarcus russell was a top draft pick and was made a multi-millionaire right off the bat. he was given several chances to be the franchise guy. he blew it and went for the purple drank. i put it all on him.
t-jack was a whole different story. chilly and spielman really screwed that whole situation up. now we are still hoping that we can dig out from it with a #12 reach pick. t-jack was given a modest chance, but te smart thing to do would have been to let him develop in a back-up role. the vikings were too stupid for that. i don’t blame t-jack, so i don’t really rip on him. soething is missing from his make-up, butthat is what talent evaluators are supposed to see before they draft a qb.
i hope he finds a great back-up role somewhere and can at least extend his career and make some money. i think people rip on him too much because they are just frustrated with all the nonesense from the chilly experiment (we are back to nearly square one after that).
BUSH DID IT!
gah. Tjack is average at best.

I’d love for Jackson to take them to the super bowl. I always supported Jackson when he was here and I hope that he does do well in where ever he goes. He had all of the tools to be a good quarterback but as mentioned above he would fold under pressure. He’s the type of quarterback that looks great in preseason/training camp but can’t put it all together during the regular season. Plus he’s made out of glass.
In all fairness to T-Jack,
The Vikings Oline manged to break the Iron Man.
We’re actually lucky that Favre lasted as long as he did.
Whoever is playing behind this Oline is going to need a lot of heart to make it through a full season.
You are now being credited if he gets destroyed next year!!

Even iron loses strength over time.
The dude was 41 entering a season with existing injuries. He was so immobile I could have sworn I saw pigeons roost on his shoulders a few plays. Something tells me we’ll all be pleasantly surprised with Ponder’s athleticism and passing skill next year.

Favre was old, but those injuries came from the previous season (2009), when the Vikings allowed Favre to get hit, hurried and sacked on every down.
You know the Oline is bad when Favre can point out who’s blitzing, and the blocker still misses the block…lol
Hopefully, that was all Chilly’s fault. :)

Webb did fine
And he played the better part of 3 games behind that line. Not to mention that Hutch and Herrera were on the IR by the time that Webb played.
No excuses for TJack. He had an opportunity and he failed.

I’m really not creating excuses for Tjack. I had his back for his first couple seasons, but now I’m happy to see him go. He can’t read a D, and his throwing mechanics are all wrong.
IMO, Webb really didn’t prove much in the 3 games he played. 0-TD’s, 3-INT’s. He had a couple rushing TD’s which is good, but he’s gotta learn to throw while in the redzone too.
I cut him slack on that because he’s so young and was a 6th round pick, but I’m happy he’s not starting this year :)
Opposing defenses didn’t have any tape on Webb last year, and the entire NFL went to sleep on the Vikings by the time he played a game.
I guarantee you, that Webb won’t be as cool when the opposing D has a plan for him, and he’s getting hit, hurried and sacked on every down…..causing 66,000 fans to stand in their seats and Boo, and scream profanities at him :)
Okay...
Youre comment was in defense of TJack due to the poor oline play. Since you mentioned Favre’s injuries as your basis for the arguement, I assumed you also were excusing TJack’s placement on the IR to end 2010.
My counter arguement was simple. Webb did not get injured behind the same oline that “broke” Favre and TJack. In fact, the Oline that Webb played behind was missing both starting guards, one of which is a future HOFer.
I had TJack’s back pre-2009. But after seeing what a competent QB could make our offense look like, the ship sailed on TJack for me. Yes TJack has athletic potential. But his potential will never be realized because he just cannot stay healthy, nor can he read a defense to save his life.
There is no proof of this:
I guarantee you, that Webb won’t be as cool when the opposing D has a plan for him, and he’s getting hit, hurried and sacked on every down
So I won’t even address it.
What I did see in Joe is more poise in those last 3 games than I saw out of TJack in 5 years. That moment when Philly pulled within 7 and Webb knew that he would have to lead the team down to at least a FG to keep the game out of reach is my case and point. The camera’s were fixed on Webb right after the Philly score. Webb’s reaction was a confident head nod in which you could imagine him telling himself, “okay, let’s do this.” TJack never, EVER, displayed such confidence.
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."
I'm not arguing TJack > Webb.
What i actually said was this:
I’m really not creating excuses for Tjack. I had his back for his first couple seasons, but now I’m happy to see him go. He can’t read a D, and his throwing mechanics are all wrong.
I’m saying unless this oline is fixed, I don’t think any QB has a chance.
Jackson, Frerotte, Favre, all of them ran for their lives behind this Oline, and none of them stayed healthy.
IMO, the Vikings biggest problem is the Oline. The failure of the last 2 seasons proves that.
This is your quote which I originally responded to:
In all fairness to T-Jack, The Vikings Oline manged to break the Iron Man.
All I’m saying is that Webb held up behind that line, which had 2 guards on IR by the time he was behind center.
TJack is injury prone. He has been injured in every season that he started at least one game.
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."
This is not about Tjack > Webb.
I know Jackson is made of glass, I’m happy to see him go. But that doesn’t change the fact that he was scrambling for his life behind the Vikings Oline.
This is about the Vikings Oline not being able to protect the QB….no matter who the QB is.
Webb holding up for 3 games proves nothing. Jackson has stayed healthy for 3 consecutive games before, and he’s won 3 consecutive games before….so has Favre, and so has Frerotte.
The games Webb stayed healthy for were at the end of the season, after everybody wrote the Vikings off.
Sure the Vikings beat the Eagles, but lets get real about that. The Eagles didn’t show up for that game….And like I said earlier, it’s much easier for a QB to have success when the opposing D doesn’t have any film on him to study.
That’s not to say that Webb can’t be a good QB, but just because he lasted behind the Vikings Oline for 3 games doesn’t mean that the Oline is fine.
Things are not all good now just because Tjack is gone…….TJack really hasn’t played in 2yrs, so I really can’t put the failure to win a SB on him.
I'm confused
First you defend Jackson by saying he played behind a terrible line. Now you admit that he his made of glass? So which is it? Either he played poorly and was often injuried because of the line, or he is a terrible NFL quarterback on his own merits. It don’t see how it can be both.
For arguements sake, let’s compare apples to apples.
In the 2010 season, TJack saw action in 3 games. He played decent although briefly vs New England after a Favre injury. He threw 3 picks against Buffalo, again after a Favre injury. Then in his only start vs the NYG, TJack completed 50% of his passes, with 2 INTs before succumbing to injury himself. In all TJack completed 58% of his passes with 3 TDs and 4 INTs, suffered 6 sacks in the 3 games he played.
Joe Webb saw action in 4 games, starting 2. His first action was against NYG while filling in for the aforementioned injured TJack. Webb’s performance was shaky at best. The previous week Webb had been practicing as a WR and KR so I can understand the nerves and rust factor. His second action at QB came against the bears after the collapse of the Metrodome. Favre started the game but did not finish it. Webb threw 2 INTs and was sacked 3 times vs. a bears team that was trying to lock up the NFC North and a 2 seed in the playoffs. Webb did manage to showcase his athletic ability while rushing for a 13 yard TD.
The following week TJack was placed on IR so Webb made his first start vs. Philly. Philly was also playing for playoff position and hoping for a bye. The defense played solid and Webb was basically asked to manage the game. With the score close in the 4th quarter, Joe lead the vikings down the field to a field goal which gave them a 2 score lead in the final minutes. Webb completed 65% of his passes and rushed for another TD.
His final game came on the road (again) vs detroit. A victory for Detroit meant that they would not finish alone in the NFC north basement. An accomlishment in it of itself. He did manage to complete 63% of his passes in a losing effort. A game that did not have Sidney Rice, Steve Hutch or Anthony Herrera.
If the line can stay healthy in 2011, that will be a huge improvement by itself. Two Offensive linemen were drafted to add competition and depth. Free agency has yet to begin, so it is possible that the FO explores that option as well.
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."
You gotta stop with the TJack/Webb comparisons. :)
Yes Jackson is made of glass, and doesn’t have much heart, but that doesn’t change the fact that he got Hit/Hurried/Sacked too much. Getting hit all the time will screw any QB up.
I think T.Brady would have troubles too if he was drafted and started too early, and was expected to win behind this oline.
My point is, during the Childress/Spielman tenure. The Vikings Oline has allowed the QB to get Hit, Hurried and Sacked just as much as the worst Oline in the NFL………no matter who the QB is. Jackson, Frerotte and Favre all got their butts kicked, and injured behind this oline.
It’s not just about staying healthy. It’s about the Oline holding up long enough to allow a play to develop.
Manning and Brady are arguably two of the slowest guys in the NFL, but they’re successful because their lines hold up long enough for a play to develop, and they have the time to go through their progressions and make a correct decision…..Jackson, Frerotte, Favre and Webb really didn’t.
I think you started with the comparisons
I began by saying it’s not entirely the oline’s fault. I used Webb as the example. TJack got hurt after action in 3 games (1 start) and Webb did not in 4 games (2 starts). That was the extent of my comparison.
Some guys take sacks because they hold on to the ball too long, because it takes them too long to process the defense. I believe this to be the case with TJack. Favre took a lot of hits because he is 100 years old and he has too much confidence in his arm.
In 2010, the Vikings allowed 36 QB sacks, that was tied for 15th worst in the NFL. Teams that faired worse include: Chicago, Green Bay, Philly, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Baltimore (all teams with proven QB’s, 5 of whose teams still made the playoffs), and Arizona, Carolina, Oakland, SF, Denver (teams without proven QBs, all teams who drafted early in 2011).
Teams that allowed the fewest sacks include: New York Giants, Indy, New England, New Orleans, and Atlanta (all playoff teams with proven QB’s).
My point is this a good QB can mask sub par oline play. But a bad QB can make the whole organization look like crap.
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."
Actually, I never compared any QB.
I started out with this:
In all fairness to Jackson
The Vikings Oline manged to break the Iron Man.
We’re actually lucky that Favre lasted as long as he did.
Whoever is playing behind this Oline is going to need a lot of heart to make it through a full season.
You responded with this:
Webb did fine.
And he played the better part of 3 games behind that line. Not to mention that Hutch and Herrera were on the IR by the time that Webb played.
No excuses for TJack. He had an opportunity and he failed.
My point is, a bad oline can expose any QB.
A good QB like Favre can cover for a bad oline, but only for so long.
Whoever the next QB for the Vikings is, will need to last a lot longer than 3 games….More like 19 games.
As long as this Oline plays like it has for the last 3-4 yrs, I don’t think any QB can lead us to the Lombardi.

Webb did OK.
How many TD’s did he throw for? How many INT’s? He did alright.
Ok if you actually read the my post and the post I was responding to
You would have seen that the context of the discussion was based on injury.
To answer your questions though, Joe Webb threw 0 TD’s and 3 INTs. He did run for 2 scores and a would-be TD to Sidney Rice was ruled incomplete at the back of the endzone.
I guess it might come as a surprise that Webb was a rookie in 2010, a 6th-round draft choice who was orignially destined to play WR at that. In fact he had been used to return a kickoff just a few days before his first NFL start behind QB. But none of that matters, right? Only TD’s and INT’s matter…
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."
Oh yeah I understand all of that
I’m just wondering how people can say he did a good job when he has 0 TD’s thrown and 3 interceptions. You are correct though he played as well as a 6th round draft pick is expected to.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
All things should be considered
Like yes he was a 6th round draft choice, originally drafted to play WR. Oh and that he was 3rd on the depth chart which meant no reps with the starters.
Or how the game he threw 2 of those picks came in the cold snowy conditions at TCF Bank stadium. Which was also his first real action in the NFL at QB.
I actually didn’t mind the INT vs Detroit too much. It came on a play where Webb was flushed out of the pocket, and instead of tucking to run, he kept his eyes downfield, found a open receiver, he just underthrew the ball. But he was trying to make something happen.
But lets look at the Vikings offense in general. The Vikings ranked 26th in passing yards. 24th in yards/att. 18th in completion %. 15th in # of sacks. 26th in yards per game. And a woeful 28th in passing TDs.
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."
True enough
He had 0 TD passes & 3 ints, but from watching him last season he has qualities that make up a good qb I also take into account the 3 TD passes that were dropped (Harvin) caught out of bounds (Rice couldn’t get BOTH feet down) called back because of penalty (thanks McKinney)

3 things that stood out to me from this fanshot
1. The author described Adam Schefter as
a guy that is pretty damn respected and accurate when it comes to NFL news
He continued to discuss his admiration for Schefter:
I respect Schefter a lot as a journalist because he tends to stay out of the headline grabbing stuff that never ends up coming true. Though I love rumors as much as the next guy, I’d say more often than not, Schefter holds off reporting on them until he has real reason to believe they’re true.
I’m just wondering if he is describing the same shit shoveling Adam Schefter that I know. You know the guy that claimed that there was a “schism” in the Vikings locker room when Favre arrived (the first time). Oh and the same Adam Schefter that noted that the Vikings were trying to trade their #12 pick but couldn’t and that is the only reason they drafted Ponder…
2. He described Trent Dilfer as a
genuinely nice guy and he was a pretty good NFL quarterback so I won’t just discount his opinion entirely.
Really? I’m stumped by that one.
3. This comment is from one of the seahawks fans who posted in the comment section:
I really, really, really like Joe Webb Any chance the Vikings trade him and stick with Ponder?

Anyone who calls the Williams Wall the 'Williams Sisters' cannot possibly be a real Vikings fan. Check back with me when Ray Edwards has gone to a Pro Bowl or is being talked about as a future Hall of Famer.
I see Jackson going to Philly, actually
It makes more sense to me. In essence, they get a 2nd Vick to fall on, and if Andy Reid can make Vick into a top passer, he can likely work some magic to make Jackson more effecient as well. Throw in the fact that Jackson ran a Childress-offense for much of his time here, which should be similar to Reid’s, and it much better.
They won’t have Kolb once the lock out lifts, so they’ll want a 2nd stringer with some game-time experience.
I understand that the Eagles are very happy with their back-up QB, Mike Kafka from Northwestern
Ponder has no idea how much pressure the fans will put on him. But he will succeed.
