What would you do as far as signing any free agents (which Spielman said they would be active) and undrafted free agents (there is another thread already for this I know)?
Here are my thoughts ...
At QB, I am not sure that the Vikings will sign a veteran free agent. I think they want to play Ponder right away. If they do go for a veteran, then maybe it is McNabb. The only way that makes sense is if Washington releases him which they probably will. At the same time why would they draft Ponder so high then? The trend nowadays is to play the rookie right away. I am not sure that McNabb will want to come into a 2 year situation either. Maybe he feels he can play longer? It all depends on the lockout situation. If it lingers and there are no mini-camps or OTAs and if training camp is abbreviated then Ponder would be best served to sit for this year and they can bring in a veteran.
At TE, I will say that Dugan could be toast. I hope they try and sign Vonta Leach or Le'ron McClain. I would try and sign McClain as he is younger. I could see them using Kleinsasser more at the FB position as well. Of course I would like for them to try and sign Henry Hynoski as an UDFA too.
At RB, it is obvious that we are set but I would like to see them add one as an UDFA. I like Derrick Locke, Noel Devine, & Mario Fannin. I think that D'Imperio may be on the PS again.
At WR, I see both Emmanuel Arceneaux and Juaquin Iglesias making the team before Burton. I think they may just flat out release Berrian. They should if they are smart. He is set to make 3.9 mil next year. If they want to, they could try and sign a Santonio Holmes, Steve Smith, Michael Floyd, Mike Sims-Walker, James Jones, or Eric Weems to take his place. Personally I think they should look at Sims-Walker as he is a deep threat. Eric Weems brings value in the return game. I also feel that Camarillo is going to have to compete for his job as a returner because he really does not bring much at the WR position. He is a possession WR and does not have much more of a ceiling whereas the young guys could.
At OL, I like Marshall Yanda, Justin Blalock, and Davin Joseph as offensive guards to add via free agency. If they did that then they could release Herrera and/or Cook. I am not sure they would do that but I would because Hutch is almost done. Blalock actually makes the most sense because he played in Atlanta and he is 27 whereas Harvey Dahl is 30.
A center free agent that may be nice is Lyle Sendlein from the Cardinals.
At K, I would like to see the Vikings bring in Josh Jasper as an UDFA kicker for insurance in case Longwell goes elsewhere. He is a free agent and can sign with any team. Since the Vikings chances of making the playoffs do not appear very bright right now, he may want to see if he can get on a team that has a realistic chance. Besides they did not think enough of him to give him a new deal prior to the lockout. So that is something to consider.
At LS, I would like to see them sign Greg Smith TE out of Texas as an UDFA to come in and see if he can beat out Loeffler for the long snapping job and also to play some tight end which he did at Texas.
Greg Smith is 6-4 245 4.78
Fifth-year player who has played tight end and all of the offensive line positions during his career … has played in 40 career games, starting 10 … made eight receptions for 52 yards and a TD … started the 2008 season at offensive tackle but switched to tight end after Blaine Irby sustained a season-ending injury … switched from tight end to center prior to the 2007 season and to tackle in the spring of '08 … is also the snapper on place-kicks
At DE, I think they are set and I also think that Edwards is probably not going anywhere for another year because I believe that the owners will go with the rules from 2010. I could see them trading Edwards to a team that needs him for a pick in the 2012 draft. Even a 3rd round pick would be nice. Although we do not covet third round picks for some reason.
At DT, I think they should definitely try and get one of the top DT free agents. I like Brandon Mebane and Barry Cofield. I also think they should look at another one as well in Mike Patterson or Alan Branch or Tommie Harris. I do not think that Kennedy or Evans are worth it considering they did not even suit up for half the games last year.
At LB, I would like to see them add Manny Lawson or Rocky McIntosh. Barrett Ruud may be available too. But I do not think they sign two LBs.
At CB, I do not think they will add a free agent unless the guys coming back from injury are not ready.
At S, I like Daniel Manning, Eric Weddle, and Michael Huff as free agents if they release Madieu. I also think they should and add Joe Lefeged or Deunta Williams as an UDFAs.
So my UDFAs would be ...
Pat Devlin QB
Derrick Locke RB
Henry Hynoski FB
Terrance Toliver WR
Kristopher O'Dowd C
Jarriel King OG/OT
Cedric Thornton DT
Pierre Allen DE
Josh Bynes LB
Ryan Jones CB
Joe Lefeged S
Josh Jasper K
Greg Smith TE/LS
I would sign these free agents ...
Le'Ron McClain FB
Mike Sims-Walker WR
Justin Blalock OG
Brandon Mebane DT
Manny Lawson LB
Michael Huff S
My 53 man roster would be (in no particular order) ...
QB - Webb, Ponder, Bomar
RB - Peterson, Gerhart, Booker - fixed. thanks LLV
FB - McClain, Kleinsasser
WR - Rice, Harvin, Sims-Walker, Arceneaux, Iglesais, Burton
TE - Shiancoe, Rudolph
OT - McKinnie, Loadholt, Brown
OG - Hutchinson, Blalock, DeGeare, Love
C - Sullivan, Fusco
K - Longwell?
LS - Smith
DE - Allen, Griffen, Robison, Edwards, Awasom
DT - KWill, Guion, Mebane, Ballard
LB - Greenway, EJ, Lawson, Erin H, Brinkley, Homan
CB - Winfield, Griffen, Cook, Allen, Burton

Some tough cuts. Maybe Camarillo hangs onto his job and Burton hits the PS hopefully.
