An Overlooked ? On Our Team..... The Fullback
Yep, there is still a lockout and I'm still bored, and when I'm bored I like to day dream about how the Vikings are gonna win the Superbowl this year, but yet again I've been dreaming about that for years. Well anyway I was Pondering about the QB situation this year, and asking myself about our Secondary when it occured to me...... who will be are starting FB next year? I decided it was time to look into the possibilites of the FB that we have. I have been also looking around at FA fullbacks to and it came to my attention that Lawrence Vickers said that he will most likely be out of Cleveland this year? Say whay? One of the best FBs in the league is being released? Hmm..... Another thing caught my attention, something Vickers said,"I'm A West Coast Fullback." I don't know about you , but I want this guy on my team, he is good at running short yardage, has good hands, and is great at blocking downfield, unlike Tahi. Tahi, who is FA this year, was not offered a contract before the lockout. We also have Jim Dugan who has played FB pretty well on several occasions , Ryan D'Imperio who was Drafted as a Linebacker, but converted to a FB, and Jim Kleinsasser who can also play the position very well. I would be for any situation at FB as long as it doesn't involve Ryan D'imperio, but I do want to hear your take on our situation.

Toby Gerhart?
He was listed at 230 lbs when entering the draft, but he’s probably 240-245 now. He’s a good power runner and can get us those crucial 3rd and goal yards. Just a thought.

Like the idea
Seems like a good fit, it would also give Gerhart some more playing time to help develop his ball carrying skils, but the problem is he isn’t a dominant run blocker like Lawrence Vickers. Run Blocking is what I’ve seen a lack of in our fullbacks since Tony Richardson. Lawrence would open up the 2nd Level more for AP, hence allowing for more yards per carry and more break aways. Lawrence Vickers is also adapted for the West Coast Offence/Offense (So I don’t get bugged for the way I spell Offense with a C I will now spell it twice.) and he could spend the rest of his career here.

Not a problem
Blocking is second to running capability and can be taught and perfected. He has a very low center of gravity also, which would certainly give him an edge on any tall Safety or LB trying to get to CP7.

Well we have to make sure he can first
If he can then we can let Tahi walk, and we won’t have to choose between Kleinsasser and Dugan. We could make Kleinsasser the back up FB and make Dugan the 3rd TE. Kleinsasser is better at FB and won’t get any penaltys unlike when he plays at TE, besides Dugan is faster and younger and will get less penaltys. If this works out then we could have the best Goaline Offence/Offense with Gerhart and Peterson and a 3 TE set , or you could swap someone out for Sidney Rice and with Ponders/Webbs ability to scramble and the additions of Demarcus Love and Brandon Fusco other teams won’t be able to stop us.

I may be wrong
but I thought i read somewhere that AP didn’t like running behind a full back. So it would be mainly used in blocking situations for passing downs.
when asked by Dan Patrick if his name alluded to not making quick decisions in the pocket, Ponder calmly replied "As crazy as it sounds, my mom's maiden name is actually Superbowlwinner. All one word"
He also had the single best rushing performance in NFL history running behind Tony Richardson...
Despite what AP wants, he will benefit from a good FB clearing the way. Not to mention the fact that AP is not the only RB on this team, and that FB’s do more than just run block.
I say go for Vickers assuming he does not cost an arm and a leg, Tahi is only marginal at this point.
Unless it was Childress that was holding Tahi back.
Gotta go with that
I don’t care what AP wants. I care how successful he is. If it can be shown that he benefits with a true blocking fullback, I would hope they’d bring one in. In fairness to AP’s sentiments, it would be interesting to hear from coaches whether they think his rookie success had more to do with Richardson’s blocking, or better play from the o-line (Birk…).
All that said, with Musgrave’s plan to use 2 TE sets, FB might not get much attention this year.
