Should we try Randy Moss again?

Old randy Moss ready to come back in 2011??

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6768491/agent-old-randy-moss-ready-return-2011

Star-divide

Randy Moss went out with a whimper after being claimed off waivers by the Tennessee Titans last season, but his agent expects the "old Randy Moss" to return in 2011.

Agent Joel Segal told NFL.com that Moss is in "freakish shape" after "working out, two-a-days, all spring and summer in West Virginia."

<!-- begin nst 1 -->

Moss' Forgettable Season

Moss Randy Moss' agent says the receiver is ready to be a "difference maker" again in 2011. He was far from that in 2010, a season in which he played for three different teams.

"He is determined, motivated and quite frankly has a huge chip on his shoulder. Whatever team ends up getting Randy, they're going to know they're getting the old Randy Moss," Segal told NFL.com. "He's not just coming in to be on the team, he's going to be Randy Moss -- a difference maker."

Moss, who turned 34 in February, finished 2010 with 28 receptions -- including just six in his eight games with Tennessee -- along with 393 receiving yards and five touchdowns in an up-and-down season in which he split time with the Titans, Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots.

That production was a big drop for the receiver who ranks second only to Jerry Rice for most TD catches, 100-yard receiving games and most games with two TD catches or more.

The seven-time Pro Bowler is tied with the Steelers' Hines Ward for eighth all-time in receptions with 954. He is just one of 10 players to have 950 or more career receptions.

The New York Jets are among the teams reportedly interested in Moss. Three of New York's top four receivers (Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Brad Smith) likely will be unrestricted free agents when the lockout is lifted.

Moss became a star in college, when he ended up at Marshall after off-field issues caused Notre Dame to rescind a scholarship offer. He had two brilliant seasons with the Thundering Herd, but he fell to the Vikings at No. 21 in the 1998 draft because of concerns about his character.

Moss unleashed all of that pent-up frustration in his first season, scoring 17 touchdowns and averaging more than 19 yards per catch to help the Vikings reach the NFC title game. In his seven seasons with the Vikings, Moss caught 574 passes for 9,142 yards and 90 touchdowns.

But the Vikings eventually grew tired of Moss' occasionally petulant behavior, and shipped him to the Raiders in 2005. A few nagging injuries and Oakland's struggles on the field combined to make his two years there largely unproductive.

However, 2007 -- his first year in New England -- ranks among the best from any receiver in NFL history, with 98 catches for 1,493 yards and a record 23 touchdowns to help the Patriots reach the Super Bowl. He caught 50 touchdowns in 52 games with the Patriots.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.\

Should we give him another shot?

The chances of us having the best recieving core if Sidney returns and Moss is his old self increases big time.

Lets not forget about his bad relationship with Chilly and how Percy Harvin flourished with him on the outside.

We should give him one last shot and target for Christian Ponder.

meh...

if anything, i see Oakland giving him another chance after all these years.

he’s a malcontent, but LF seems a little more ‘forgiving’ than Chilly…though i question if even LF would give him another chance. Moss has a chip on his shoulder, for sure, and could unleash if he wanted to. if he kept his attitude under control i’d love to have him back on the team — unfortunately, i’m hesitant to believe he could do that. and, his effort seems to only matter if his team is a contender…should the Vikes struggle out of the gate, Moss would likely shut down quickly.

regardless of where he goes, i may pick him up in fantasy football if he slips far enough…

Tough one here.

The last thing this Viking team needs is more distractions. However, since the return of Rice is still up in the air, the concept is very interesting. No doubt he can still play, but the team would have to change caterers and, assuming Ponder is the QB, I think it would be very detrimental if Moss started pulling the pissy routine every time he thinks he’s not getting the ball often enough. I love Moss, but bad idea for this team. I am curious as to how everyone else feels about it.

This kind of thing is better suited for a Fanshot.

Oh, the AGENT said so, got it......

not exactly the source for independent verification, is it? The Vikings are retooling right now, Moss is part of the past. Let it go.

by Mel Allen on Jul 15, 2011 9:37 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

besides...

saying Moss has a chip on his shoulder implies that he somehow thinks that others have done HIM wrong, again. I would rather hear him say he is motivated for the right reasons, will keep his mouth shut, and will play EVERY down he is on the field.

by Mel Allen on Jul 15, 2011 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions

yes.

I say yes, for a few reasons:

he legitimately loves Minnesota. He’s formed strong relationships with the community that still remain and he’s admitted the nostalgia factor in the past. The ball he played in Minnesota will be (arguably, NE fans? :p) what gets him into the HOF. He’s also admitted that he’d love to retire a Viking.
after a disastrous 2010 season, he’ll likely be acquired with a much lower price tag. Maybe a 4th round this time and straight money, homey?
-as vikesfan4lyf pointed out, Harvin took a shine to Moss and had a lot of attention taken off of him on the field, allowing him to blow up those few games when Moss was in town.
-Joel Segal, his agent, says he’s been busting his butt all spring/summer getting in some of the best shape he’s been in in years. Naturally an agent is going to boost up his client’s image, especially one that carries controversial weight like Moss, but I think even Randy knows his stock after last year is low.
-Chilly is gone… and I feel Moss would respect and play for a coach like Frazier
especially if Frazier truly is this quiet, inspirational, Tony Dungy-type leader I keep hearing about. He could be the guy that brings Moss back down to Earth and remind him that he is pissing away his talent and image… and it’s not too late to change that.
-Moss/Rice combination on the outsides, with Harvin in the slot, AP in the backfield, would be absolutely ridiculous. No matter how much Moss’ stock has allegedly fallen, every defensive coordinator in the NFL has no choice but to respect his presence on the field.
-The guy can still play. He’s still an athletic talent unlike anyone else in the NFL. He didn’t get his nickname by accident. Sure, he’s getting older, but I’m convinced he still has a few more good years in the tank. He also opens the field up even when he’s not getting passes sent his way.

The big question is- would Frazier take the risk his rookie season as HC. Frazier seems like a man that won’t even consider a scenario if there is potential for unneeded drama/controversy… especially when he’s trying to establish his place with this team.
Again, I don’t think Moss would be any kind of financial burden- and drama aside, it would be a significant upgrade from Bernard "I Stare at Butterflies in the Grass Before the Snap" Berrian in that spot. Even if Berrian stepped up and played to his potential (which I would love), I still think Moss would cause more headaches for defenders and opposing DCs.

It all comes down to if the reward is worth the risk. I said it last year and I’ll say it again this year- I say yes. I think Moss wants to be a Viking again.

I feel like Ponder would make a good connection with Moss though since he is a very established veteran.

by vikesfan4lyf on Jul 15, 2011 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I just think

we’re in a win/win situation here.

He’s going to take a small contract wherever he goes so its not like he cant be cut if he doesnt perform. If he does take a slightly bigger contract it will be based on incentives. If he does perform like the old Moss then we have a playmaker on the field opposite of Rice and next to Harvin for cheap.

The only downside is his attitude as it has always been but again he can be released without much loss if his behavior gets too extreme.

by vikesfan4lyf on Jul 15, 2011 10:58 AM CDT reply actions

Key to resigning Moss...

INCENTIVE LADEN contract.
Value has dipped, $$$ for production.
(Productive) Moss / Rice / Harvin = Defenses crapping their pants.
Harvin & A.P. would have a field day…

Losing the 3rd rounder was actually Chilly's fault !

Chilly could have suspended Moss or something like that, versus losing his cool and throwing Moss away like he did.
Otherwise I agree, NO! NO! NO!
I was never a big fan of Moss neither, #80 was always my fav.

by chaosg on Jul 16, 2011 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Moss back in purple

I’m in two minds about this, first he’s on the back end of his career, and he’ll be working with a young QB (Webb or Ponder) and he can be pretty brutal to QB’s at the best of times. No matter how hard he’s worked out there is always the chance that the Pat’s were right and it was time to let him go.

On the other hand it would be cooler than just about anything for Moss to retire in Purple. The man was an icon for our team and I have to say for all the crap there was a lot of benefit to having him on our team. Hell what can I say I’m a complete and utter homer let him back on the squad. Make his contract incentive laden and staple his mouth shut, and super glue it and if that doesn’t work let Kluwe be his PR assistant…

Childress gone, TJack gone, new stadium on the way: it's like that Christmas when Santa brought prostitutes!

by Grime on Jul 15, 2011 3:22 PM CDT reply actions

Yes sign him

but only if there is a condition where we can void his contract completely if he does something stupid. Also, lots of incentives in the contract would be a good idea; if he wants to be paid well, let him earn it.

It cost a third rounder to get him off the Patriots, maybe we can get something out of moss this season and make that deal kinda worth it.

by VikingsForever on Jul 15, 2011 3:38 PM CDT reply actions

I'm pondering Ponder to Moss

Having Moss on the field would be a great way to help a young QB get comfortable in the NFL. No worries, just throw the ball.

Tired of crying

by PurpleTears on Jul 15, 2011 9:10 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmm....

That all depends.

If the whole reason he was such a baby when he was here was because he saw how bad a coach Chilly was, and didn’t want anything to do with it. Then maybe…

If he was just being a baby to be a baby, then absolutely not.

He did not seem to do anything once he joined the Titans, so I think he was just being a baby to be a baby, and as such we should steer clear of #84.

by Bjorno on Jul 16, 2011 1:27 AM CDT reply actions

As much as I love Moss we would be the laughing stock of the league if we signed him again.

by Skoaldybi on Jul 16, 2011 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

Until the first game of the season when they see Ponder throw for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns.

No, no, no, no, no!!!

Nobody jogs a route quite like Moss. I can’t believe we’d consider taking a player who took so many plays off while on the field last year. Frankly, I’d still be lukewarm on Moss even if he did his resting on the sidelines. As it is, I can’t stand seeing a player loaf when out on the field — particularly if he’s wearing a Vikings uniform. Don’t just pass on this opportunity, run away!!!

by kcskol on Jul 17, 2011 1:36 PM CDT reply actions

said it before

I said it before, I’ll say it again. Moss will play for you if he respects you as a coach. If he doesn’t think you know what you’re doing (Mr. Noodle, ANY Oakland coach) then you get a half-a$$ed commitment from him. Look back at him with Denny Green, look at him in New England then compare.

That said, if he will RESPECT Frazier, I say sign him for low $ with high incentives, GET RID of Berrian, & give the $ saved to Sid the Kid.

I can't respect a player who treats his teammates and fans that way

I still get goosebumps when I think of Moss and Carter playing together. However, this year’s Randy was something else altogether. If he’s going to step onto the field, he needs to be ready and willing to play. No excuses about not liking/respecting the coach. He’s a professional athlete. If pride isn’t enough, the money he gets should be enough for him to give his 100% without the sulking and hissy fits.

I undersand your feelings,but...

his teammates have never complained about his play. Not in his first go round with the Vikes, not Oakland (but then EVERYONE wanted out of there), New England guys were actually sad to see him go, as were the Viking players who wanted to see Moss stay (especially Harvin) & see Mr. Noodle go. Even though he didn’t do much on field with the Titans the other receivers talked about how much he taught them from film study & in practice to improve their skills. So it seems that his teammates have his back no matter what we feel about what he does.

stunned yes,

Yes, they were stunned, but they still didn’t want him to go! The players & the Wilf’s were even more stunned & upset when he was released. The Wilf’s even looked into stopping the release & possibly firing Mr. Noodle. If you remember this was right after our genius of a FORMER coach was given the keys to beating the Patriots, but was able to out smart everyone & pull defeat out of the jaws of victory. Then when called out on it in the media he lashed out by releasing the person who he didn’t listen to in the first place. It wasn’t EVER his teammates that wanted him gone.

You could be right...

…but I just don’t recall it that way. I remember Harvin being very upset. I don’t really remember much negative reaction from other players. There might have been some, but I don’t remember. I do remember a couple of players saying that there teammates were shocked at Moss’ behavior and coming to the defense of the caterers.

And of course, Wilf had every right to be pissed. At a minimum, Childress owed him a conversation before cutting Moss. I still don’t interpret that as Wilf and his teammates having Moss’ back.

As I said though, you could be right. Perhaps I read more into the players’ comments than was there. Either way though, I just can’t bring myself to feel any joy at the thought of Randy Moss the Vikings Part Trois.

by kcskol on Jul 20, 2011 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

A moss on the field

means we’re playing short handed. It’s time to see the real vikings emerge this year. Someone learning a new system for one more season and retiring for good isn’t looking at the roster for the long term. I just don’t see it happening. Frasier has his hands full and musgrave needs players who can work with them and be true to the team through the arrival of the newly christened stadium (assuming that MN gov’t straightens it all out w/o any further jackassery).
