Now that the Lockout is officially over, I thought it would be interesting to reopen discussion on which players that went undrafted we think the Vikings should look at. I remember a post like this after the draft, but now it is real and teams can start reaching out to sign these players. Here are the guys that I think the Vikings should seriously consider signing.
Deandre McDaniels - S - Clemson AND/OR Jeron Johnson - S - Boise St. The position these guys play give it away. Both of them are solid safeties who I was surprised to see go undrafted. McDaniels is more of a ballhawk while Johnson is a harder hitter, but I think our secondary would benefit from both, or either, of these guys.
Terrence Toliver - WR - LSU AND/OR Darvin Adams - WR - Auburn. These guys are tall, athletic receivers. I think getting one of these guys or someone like them is even more important if Big Sid and the Vikings part ways. I remember being shocked that neither of these guys were drafted.
Ian Williams - DT - Notre Dame. Williams is a big body with good technique who I think could fill the role of run stopper at the 1 spot in goal line or short yardage situations. Highly doubt he will be as solid of a contributor as Phat Pat, but I think he could help out in critical situations.
Zach Hurd - G - UConn. Again, his position gives away the Vikings need for him. Hurd was a solid lineman in college who was named to the All Big-East team and could provide much needed depth to the Vikings Line.
Weslye Saunders - TE - South Carolina. Saunders got in trouble with the NCAA and had to miss last season, but he was a solid blocker for the Gamecocks at 6’5, 270 and was a reliable pass-catcher for them in his junior season (32 catches for 350 yards and 3 TDs). He might be a solid pickup and could fight his way to the number 3 TE spot on the team behind Shank and Rudolph.
Understanding that the Vikings had numerous opportunities to grab these guys and decided not to, any undrafted free agent faces an uphill battle, but I think these guys have the potential to prove their worth on the practice squad and make the 53 man roster in time. Whether they will live up to that potential is a completely different matter.
Who are y'all hoping the Vikings take a look at and extend an offer to in the next week?
