And Your First Free Agent Signing Is...Devin Aromashodu?!
First signing. RT @AdamSchefter: #Vikings reached agreement with former Bears WR Devin Aromashodu on a 1-year contract
Oh, joy. With the Vikings needing help at defensive end, quarterback (and please, dear, sweet, seven pound, five ounce baby Jesus, not Donovan McNabb) the first free agency signing of the 2011 season is former Bears WR Devin Aromashodu.
First off, I'm not thrilled that the Vikings seem to chase after every Bears WR that they don't pursue. I mean, that would be okay and all, if they weren't anything more than mediocre.
In recent years, we've been thrilled with the seven yard outs of Bobby Wade, and Bernard Berrian's eternal hamstring issues. Well, there was this:
Yeah, that was pretty sweet. But other than that, Berrian was a huge waste of free agency money and probably won't be back, Wade was serviceable, but produced about as many yards as a league average tight end, and now the Vikings have signed Devin Aromashodu. What are DA's numbers? (And because Aromashodu is so damn difficult to spell, his Delta Tau Chi name will henceforth be DA).
In 3 seasons with the Bears, he has 41 catches, 543 yards, and 4 TD's. This seems like an insurance move for depth, and it indicates to me that Berrian won't be back, but that the Vikes remain hopeful that they can re-sign Sidney Rice.
Welcome to Minnesota, DA. May you have a great 2011 season.

We only signed him
because he caught the game winning TD against us in 2009 (and now I’ll be reminded of that if he ever gets his name mentioned during a game)
He had
7 of those receptions and 150 yards in one game against the Vikings in 2009.

And every journeyman quarterback that the Vikes
seem to face turns into Joe Montana for one game, seemingly half the time. Doesn’t mean we should sign them.

Love this signing
He has some good skills, bears will regret it

I was just pointing out that his numbers are skewed
Not that we should sign him

Geez, after the disappearance of Berrian,
The Vikes just decided to see if they could do worse………
Oh great googly moogly
R.I.P. Harmon Killebrew & Derek Boogaard, Minnesota sports hearts will always have some emptiness without you.
This is such low risk
I don’t see why everyone is so terribly disappointed. The guy has some intriguing physical tools; he’s tall and fast. It was only a 1-year deal. This is nothing more than a training camp flyer that might be able to stick with the team should we have poor luck in FA. I definitely do not mind the FO taking looks at as many people as possible. If it doesn’t pan out, we release him, no harm done.
It's disappointment for me
only if Rice doesn’t resign. WR corps take a huge hit if Sid walks, especially if this is the main attempt to fix.

Give the guy a chance...
I bet he did so bad because he was upset that he was playing for the Bears….. Wouldn’t you all be wishing for a purple jersey while to sat next to Cutler ( who at this point in time is crying and telling you to run faster to make his throws look better.) I bet now that his dreams have come true he will reach the Pro Bowl 23 times in a row.
I was at the game in the BB clip.
That was a great play and a fan-flipping-tastic game.

I WASN'T at the game in the BB clip...
and I still thought it was a “fan-flipping-tastic” game!… give me a break though – I live in Texas…

Funny thing...
I was at that game with a guy from Texas. Nope, not kidding.
As great as that touch down was, I think the most incredible part of that game was the goal-line stand that kept the Bears from scoring. The Vikings defense held firm and we thought it was over, then Benny Sapp was flagged for a penalty and they had to do it all over again—an they did. It was incredible.
That game was full of drama, seems to me that Gus Frerotte spent some time unconscious on the field that night too.

Childress was ready to challenge the touchdown.

Only if we can work out a contract with him
I hope we get it worked out

Inter-Division is so incestuous
There are no other teams that see one another more, or are gamed harder, or have more film watched on, than inter-divisional rivals. It’s no surprise that the Vikings have had their eye on this guy, probably for some time now.
That said…. he’s just another training camp body right now. The Vikings will have a lot of them, only the best will survive, assuming the Viking’s FO can properly evaluate the talent, which isn’t always the case.

Thanks for posting that Berrian TD clip, Ted...
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t that his only career reception as a Viking?

I am neither excited or disappointed.
A complete lack of intensity on this move. I don’t care nor do I care. This is a total yawner.

We do seem
to really have a thing for mediocre Bears receivers, no? Oh well- if he’s just a cheaper replacement for BB, then I’m OK w/ it. I suppose we needed to replace him somehow. Still, I do wonder- we have Emmaneul Arceneaux (sp?) and Jaymar Johnson. I wonder why these two weren’t considered sufficient enough to replace BB… it does make me wonder if this isn’t an insurance move should El Sid take off. >.< (I’m on the Ted ship of ‘ohhhhh crap’ should that happen.)

I'd like it better
If we somehow traded BB, Wade, and Aromashadu for Devin Hester. Hester isn’t an elite receiver by any means, but at least it would save the 2-3 kicks he returns for TDs against us every year.

I think the Vikings are impressed by these Bears WRs
after watching them perform well against us. But what does that prove? Our DBs tend to give up career games to nobodies on a fairly regular basis.
Ding ding ding

Looked into it and...
He had a strong end to the 2009 season, and even showed potential in the 2010 preseason. When 2010 opened he received a team-high 10 targets, caught 5 balls for 71 yards.
And then he basically got benched and was relegated to special teams for the rest of the year… I keep reading he got “put in the doghouse” and never got out, saw one report about comments he made about Martz & Smith, one about a couple drops the game after the 71 yarder etc.
It seems like he wasn’t a fit for their new scheme, and he wasn’t exactly “in favor” with the coaches. I’ve got no issues giving the 6-2 WR a shot, he’s got talent, if it doesn’t work out just cut him.
it seems we are collecting recievers the same way we collect mediocre & anonymous d-backs
warcraft, you are my guitar hero !!!
I actually like our DB's
just when they’re healthy. Last year was a disaster, Griffin was playing physical and great, and he’s gone for the year. Chris Cook shows some upside, and he’s gone. you lose your 2 and 3 cornerback in the beggining of the season means you have practice squad guys in on nickel and dime packages which is what teams forced us to be in often.
We don’t have the money to go after the big names everyone desires (or the cap room anyway) so I wouldn’t expect much until we can drop Madieu and Berrian and a few others who aren’t living up to their money’s worth. This guy has upside he just hasn’t had a chance to be proven, so it sounds like the type we will have to go after right now.
I’m against McNabb because if we sign him then forget upgrading our O-line or Safties.
Skol
Our Corners are Fine
But our safeties are a joke. Really hoped we would land Weddle.
We need to do something. Worst Safety combo in the league imo, neither one can cover OR tackle. What are they good for? Winfield makes up for their poor play in the run game a lot.
Surely we remember him from this game?
Or are we trying to forget?

Come on Man!
Does it really matter who the Vikings sign first. They have to participate in the most hectic FA market of ALL TIME. They have acquired McNabb, and they are trying to retain Sidney Rice. Also, they have exoressed serious interest in Safety Eric Weddle from San Diego. And they don’t need a DE, they resigned Brian Robison and they have Everson Griffen who has some serious upside. They drafted Christian Ballard and he can play both DE and DT positions, so they could use some depth on the end position. So Come on Man!
Im fine with this
DA is basically berrian 2.0
same player, except this time we aren’t overpaying
I had higher hopes for berrian but obviously he let us down. I fully expect DA to be the player berrian was for the last few years. A decent, undersized burner with questionable hands but great open field playmaking ability.
In other words a solid #3 or #4 WR
