Straight retirement, homey.

Randy Moss has apparently decided to call it quits after 13 seasons in the NFL. Moss' agent told Adam Schefter "After weighing his options and contemplating offers, he’s decided to retire."

Moss spent time with the Raiders, Patriots, and Titans. But he'll always hold a special place in Minnesota Vikings folklore, even after his brief 2010 return had disastrous results. Forgive me if I won't completely rule out Moss coming out of retirement later this year given the right situation on a contending team, but until that happens we'd like to wish Randy the best in retirement. Here's to hoping he catches tons of fish, moons any and all Packer fans he meets, and keeps being the enigmatic, magnetic personality we all know and love.

Will Moss now marry Carmen Electra?

Or will he go into pro wrestling?

Peace out, Randy. You were always entertaining.

I suggest he should skip over pro wrestling and just run for governor of Minnesota.

Gotta get that new stadium somehow.

I'll miss you, Randy. :(

As a 9 year old in 1998, his rookie season is the first I can remember as a Viking. I wish he could have played longer for us, but I’m grateful for the time that he did spend here.

Now the big question

If Chris Carter can’t get in the Hall of Fame, how the hell is Randy Moss going to?

i have a feeling he'll be back sometime this season...

…but either way, much love to Moss. despite all the drama over two stints with the team, he has his place in Viking lore and the good times ultimately outweigh the bad — in my mind, anyway.

Should’ve retired him, I hate Childress for throwing Randy out. I hope “chilly” never gets another job in the NFL.

Randy

Thanks for all the memories you served me with while donning the purple 84 jersey on Sundays. You cemented my love for the Vikes growing up watching you.

He was one of the players that got me into football

and one that made me a fan of the Vikings, one of my all time favorites.

by Curtis2012 on Aug 1, 2011 1:09 PM CDT reply actions

He will wait to see who'd contending halfway through the season

And then join them for a run at a Super Bowl.

Will probably end up helping him as well, as he’ll have fresh legs for the second half of the season.

Funny, I thought he retired last year.....

I would say some sentimental crap but I am 100% sure that Moss will return to the NFL at some point. Some team will have underwhelming wide receivers or a big time guy could get injured. Next thing you know, Randy’s phone will be ringing.

by Coolio12 on Aug 1, 2011 1:39 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Yeah there is NO way that Moss is really retired.

If it was up to me, I’d cut Berrian and add Moss. Actually regardless of Moss, I’d cut Berrian.

No. 84

I like the fact that I can now wear my Moss jersey out of nostalgia. Unless until he unretires. It’s still the only player’s jersey I’ve ever purchased. (That will change soon, when I buy a #4 Kluwe jersey later this season.)

The game got a bit darker for me

Been following Randy his entire career will miss him now that he’s gone.

And yes having Berrian on our team and Moss retired is like a piece of glass in my eye. If only you were a bit easier to get along with Randy.

I think it's a good thing.

I’m sure NONE of us wanted him to go to the Jets. At least we all got to see him in a purple jersey one last time, even though it was only for 4 weeks.

Randy, you’ll always be my favorite Viking. Have a good retirement, maybe you can become a coach with your vast NFL knowledge.

As someone who was a Moss bandwagon jumper...

I can honestly say I wouldn’t have liked that. At least a part of me… maybe somewhere deep down, the nostalgia would have been nice. But he had his chance for that last season and pissed it away. I prefer for the Vikings to not cowtow to him like that. We have Adrian Peterson… he’s the face of our franchise now, he’s our hero. And he acts and lives like one. There are other ex-Vikings that, to me, are more worthy of honorable rememberance- Chris Carter, for one. Brett Favre, even- he may have held us hostage in the ‘10 offseason, but when he was around, he didn’t act like a jerk. Or on the defensive side of the ball, guys like John Randle or Pat Williams.

But not Randy. I will always hold onto the good memories. But there are too many bad ones for me to consider him my favorite.

That's what I liked about him.

I never cared about what he said or did, he had(maybe still has) the talent to back it up. I liked Brett Favre, but to me, he never was a hero.

by christian220896 on Aug 1, 2011 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Randy, you were a dick and a hero.

I’ll admit it as I’ve admitted it before- my joyous-ish existence as a Vikings fan started with me essentially being a bandwagon jumper because of Moss in ’98. So I do owe him a lot- hence my tendancy to post non-Viking related stories regarding the SuperFreak (damn you Eric for beating me to this one!).

As the title said, he was both the villian and the savior. I really had it out for him after he ended his first stint with us- he had acted like such a jerk, I was determined to turn my Moss jersey into a carwash rag (never could follow through, tho… those things are expensive!!!). And then when he came back last season- man was I stoked. Go figure, in about one month he relived his entire first stint with us- he started out as the hope of the franchise and ended it by being a total a-hole that we couldn’t stand.

I am glad he retired tho. Bittersweet, yes. But he showed last season he was essentially done. Did TO put up some awesome numbers in Cinncy? Sure. But will anyone really remember that, thanks to the franchise’s record that season? Not really. At best, Randy would have had just such an experience- a final season where he showed he could still play, but likely for some organization that was going to do absolutely zilch regardless, and he wouldn’t be remembered for it.

He’s a true enigma. I will remember him in two ways as a player: one, as a WR with such skill that he became the hero of two franchises, and the man largely responsible for two historical seasons- ’98 with the Vikings, and ’07 with the Pats. Then two, I will always remember him as the player who SHOULD have left Jerry Rice in his wake and owned every receiving record with such dominance that it would be unlikely to be touched for well over a generation… but too lazy and self-centered to ever fully realize that potential.

Ah hubris… you have taken down many a great man. Farwell Randy. Have fun with NASCAR!

Too bad he was a dbag off the field

I would have loved to see him here this year as a Viking. Off the field issues were his downfall. He is arguably the best WR ever on the field.
