How Do You Feel About The Upcoming Season?
For all of us here it has been way too long without any real football (no, that preseason game doesn’t count). Each season brings its own expectations with it. 2008 was get to playoffs or be fired for Childress. 2009 and 2010 were both Superbowl or bust. This season looks to be about how the team is going to transition into a new set of coaches and QB’s. This makes expectations for this season a bit different than in the past few years.
Usually, we talk about wins and losses when we are discussing how good (or bad) we think the upcoming season will be for the Vikings. While that is fun, it doesn’t really say how we feel about the team.
For example, one guy could think that the Vikings will be going 8-8 and he would be happy with that because to him it would show they are improving.
On the other hand someone may think that the Vikings will also go 8-8, but wouldn’t be happy with that result as he would view anything less than a playoff spot as disappointing.
So instead of asking you guys how many wins/losses you think are team will get. I want to get a sense for how we all feel about the upcoming season. Here’s a brief description of these moods/views; some are rather self-explanatory, others, not so much.
Purple Cool-Aid Drinker
Basically, you are excited about the Vikings to the point where you have hugely irrational expectations of them. E.G. Peterson rushing for 3000 yards, Vikings going 19-0, Ponder is instantly turning into Brady. Fun for day dreaming, but can be kind of disappointing once the season starts. (Not to burst any bubbles, but the odds of those things happening are unfortunately rather slim). I know this is how I was feeling heading into the first year of Favre. For some people, this is how they start off every season. Looking back, I think it’s a little crazy, but to each their own I guess.
Present Optimist
Mainly, if this is your view you are going to be very positive about the outlook of the season, most likely you see us in a McNabb led playoff run, or Ponder having a season similar to Flacco or Matt Ryan for example. It could be something else, just as long as it is something of a more or less a positive outlook on this current season.
Future Optimist
This is slightly different than a present optimist. A future optimist will see the coming season as most likely being rather bad, but sees that as just being part of the process towards eventual becoming a better team. For example, the Vikings could go 3-13, but if Ponder is showing good signs of being the QB of the future, than that season would have been good for them.
Hopeful Pessimist
Yes, I know this is an oxymoron, but that’s the point. This is where I fit in. I’m excited about the season, but really have mixed opinions on how I feel about the team. On one hand there is all the optimism that comes from have a rookie QB. On the other hand it doesn’t feel like the team is going to be good this year. I’d like very much to be wrong, but I just don’t see this being a good year. But at the same time I’m thinking that it’s possible that the team can still get its act together and be in the hunt for the playoff. All I know is that I’m excited for football regardless of how it turns out.
Pessimist
It’s not difficult to be a pessimist about this coming season. Let’s see, it could be easily argued that:
We are in arguably the best division in the league, we lost four solid players in Edwards, Rice, Leber, and Pat Williams, the replacements for these players most likely won’t be as good, we have a washed up QB in McNabb, a rookie who some say shouldn’t have been in the first round. I’m sure I missed something, but just looking at the stuff on this list. I’d say it would be easy to fall into this category.
Obviously the list is not all encompassing, I’m sure there are things I missed and things that overlapped.
Anyway, vote for whichever option best fits your mood about the season. Obviously, we are all excited for the coming season, but have different expectations for our team. I think it will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Drinking the purple drank as usual.
However I am a realist and could see the Vikings sneaking into the playoffs (like gb did last year) and making at least a little noise.
Think you might need to change the name of your first category.
Punch drunk on the purple kool aid maybe?

I like that you label the hope that the Vikings gets into the playoffs and make "a little noise" as...
being “a realist.” To me that would pretty close to amazing. I hope it happens, but here’s why I’m really nervous that the Vikings are in trouble and that it might not be a season or two turnaround.
O-line is bad. Really bad. You could reasonably argue that they need to replace every single starter on the line in the next year (at the latest) and should have started that replacement process this year.
Our main running back is in his last season of a huge contract. If we sign him, we’re going to be tying up a lot of money for a long time. If we don’t sign him, one biggest offensive threat is gone.
Our WR ranks are relatively weak. Harvin is awesome but needs support. I like Jaymar Johnson but that’s about it in terms of optimism at the WR position.
Our TE ranks will be turning over by the end of this season at the latest. Shank and Kleinsasser will be gone. Kleinsasser had trouble last season which is reasonable given his age. It won’t get any easier this year.
Our D-line is weaker than last year which was weaker (in terms of performance) from 2009 and 2008. K. Williams is slowing down. Filling 2009 Pat Williams shoes will be tough. There are decent sized question marks with the replacements on the line. I think they’ll do okay, but they won’t be like 2008 or 2009.
Our secondary situation is a mess. We have problems at CB and safety. I’m more optimistic about the safety position now that Williams is gone as long as T. Johnson doesn’t show up on the field, but we’re probably middle of the pack at safety at best. At CB, Winfield is a phenom in the run and pass rush phase of the game, but he’s not a cover guy. Cook looked bad. Allen showed that he’s not the answer at corner. Other than O-line, the secondary is our 2nd big weakness.
I like our coaches, our LBs and our QB situation (for the moment). However, big portions of our team are a mess and getting pretty long in the tooth. Unfortunately, we don’t seem to have any bright young stars in the making at this point — Ponder, Webb and Gerhart aside (and it’s too early to tell with Ponder and Webb and Gerhart’s season last year was a mixture of "good progress but unacceptable fumbling problems).
It would be amazing
However, I do like what are team is showing right now. I try not to read anything into preseason games but the team is pulling together a lot better than I thought it would be at this time.
Childress gone, TJack gone, new stadium on the way: it's like that Christmas when Santa brought prostitutes!
Future optimist
Its too early to tell with ponder , but I look at it this way! I am a huge Mcnabb fan! Only in Philly can they go to 4 straight NFCCG and be disappointed. SuperBowl loss sad, but shyt. They went there! We have to dig deep here to remember a SuperBowl appearance. If he plays lights out, could be here several years, giving ponder proper time to learn the right way!
Optimistic because , AP is our whole team now, Ziggy , with a new stadium deal couldn’t lose the most valued asset on the team.
Other than that I’ve been burned to much before (1998,2009) to really become too banged up, but We can turn this around pretty quick. I keep telling myself that like the Pats, WEwill have 2 hot tight ends that are a huge part of musgraves o-line, when the D doesn’t know which one will ut be, a pass or run block… I think it looks better than we think!!!!

I dont know about McNabb,
I’ve always thought of him as an overated, average QB. So I’ve got mixed feeling with him on our team. Sure he is a good improvement, but he has been a choker in the playoffs. Is another NFC championship loss what we need if we are also trying to rebuild around Ponder?
What do you call an intelligent Packers Fan?

I'm just excited.
I don’t expect to go to the playoffs. I’m just looking forward to sitting back on Sundays and enjoying some football.
Definitely optimistic about the present and the future
I like what the Vikes have going and I think we could surprise some people this year.
I would say I’m a purple koolaid drinker just because I’m always optimistic about the Vikes. But think I am realistically optimistic. There’s a chance that this team could make the playoffs, and with the kind of leadership, both by players and coaches, I think if they do make the playoffs they could make a deep push.
They also could get lost in the Tough NFC north.
Anyways I’m just optimistic that it looks like we are going to be a creative & aggressive team that I believe will compete with a good chance to win every week.
