Open Letter to Randy Moss
Its funny that 3 times since 1965 did I get excited when they drafted a player. First one was Chuck Foreman and I had a poster and jersey I wore to death. When they drafted Moss I went totally Bonkers (I knew something was wrong when Dallas Passed on him and he was a Cowboys fan amazing) because I had seen his Highlights at Marshall he just lit it up and then his nickname "The Freak" and they weren't kidding folks let me tell you. He slipped to the Vikings by some miracle (Wore his Jersey to Death). Moss slipped because of "Questionable Personality Attributes" in other a total screw up with legal problems and possible drug issues. Lets not also forget he had transferred from FSU to Marshall pretty odd not to want Bowden as a coach especially in light of Bowden saying Moss was a "Bigger Version Of Deion Sanders hmmm...Pretty rarefied Air don't you think for a freshman to get from Bowden. Everywhere Randy Played he set records for Td's. Big Play receiver who had The Legacy type ability to break open a game with Big Game ability and skills to match. Speed,Leaping Ability and Good Hands. Total Lightning in a Bottle
His first QB was Brad Johnson (unreal) and Moss had a 2 TD first game and 95 Yards. I knew from that moment on we had something special as we did In Cris Carter someone equally in Mosses league and ability but a veteran player who like Moss never found a Interview he didn't like and very opinionated as well or Outspoken hmmm. When Moss made the Vikes in 1998 he was paired with someone he could not only learn from but respect his football abilities also because he had already climbed the the stat boards making him one of the most elite effective recievers (who wouldnt run across the middle that one still makes me laugh today) that ever played sub one JERRY RICE! I would even go as far as to say if Moss had the same QB quality that Rice had he to might be where CC's LEGACY is.
Beyond the stats comes a person who squirts refs with Water Bottles, Tries to run over people with his car and numerous other odd behaviors for someone with his talent as a football player and his life outside of football need to be considered. Randy Tell me something with all the physical tools and guidance and luck you had having Carter next to you and teach you did you never learn the key to being great isn't the stats or the trash talk or even the numbers. CC was always outspoken and I didn't always agree with what he said but he stood by his convictions unlike you whose convictions usually had you rooming with a guy named Bubba and there stands the difference. I just cant believe spending all those years with CC never seemed to be able to help straighten out your priorities. It cost you being with the Vikes instead of the Raiders where you certainly were loved even though your behavior was less then juvenile. Now one might think that your travels to Oakland got you a place on New England and Brady and it did. Everyone thought you were done but you weren't. Again you broke records. Again they sent you packing. Why do you think? Why did the Vikes send you packing again? They needed a receiver and all you could do was mouth off and play lame. They always said you took plays off you werent involved in. That does not make for a great reputation nor does your ability to stir up a locker room. When The Vikes cut you ONE team was interested. Let me ask you this how many times was Jerry Rice traded or cut. How Many times was Cris Carter Traded or cut. You were never cut because of ability because you have all galaxy ability and epitomize the word's Narcissistic and Diva in the same breathe pretty amazing. Think CC or JR wouldnt have had a zillion offers if they had ever been cut at the end of their run? Think your travels have proven you to ever be mentioned as a person like the above 2? Football numbers are great for stats but when they talk about you in the future think anyone is going to just say he broke all these TD records? My guess is the diatribe that follows will include some of your finer moments. Lucky you weren't around for the Boating Party in 2005 or am pretty sure you might have graced the pages for that also.
If you truly are retired take heed in knowing you have a fan in your football skills in me. You have also disappointed many with your antics. If this is the end do something good for a change and teach and mentor other receivers on your dime. Do something good for your fellow man. Leave that as your legacy not what you already have as a person. Good Luck Randy unless you make changes you are going to need it.

when i was a kid
the first player that really stood out to me, was randy. I wasn’t so concerned about his personal issues because i didn’t know, this allowed me to just concentrate on the Randy and his on field skills. He will always be the freak and the greatest player of my era.

Same here.
My first vivid Vikings memory was as a six year old watching the first game of the 1998 season, and I also was too young to understand off-field behavior. Therefore, Randy Moss was and always will be my favorite Viking to watch (with Peterson a close second).
Randy always had me torn
Loved his amazing skills…hated his effort at times. Loved the memorable plays…hated the memorable off-field crap. Sometimes people were hard on him for the wrong things…but that was his fault since he did so many things that were stupid. The Green Bay mooning incident was way overblown…it was a clever and funny thing to do in a rivalry game. I still dislike Buck for his stupid reaction. He really had a chance to go out with class and a bang when he came to the Vikings last year….but he could not contain his displeasure with Childress (well…we all had that!!)…but his locker room crap with the caterer was horrible.
In the end..he is the best deep threat WR ever…but he could have been so much more! All that said, I bet he plays this year for someone!
The most difficult challenge Moss faced in his career......
was living up to that first season in 98. THAT was incredible. He took the league by storm, with 17 TDs and 14 catches of over 40 yds. His YPC was 19.0! Just an amazing performance that he was unable to duplicate again as a Viking. He picked it up again in New England his first season, but that rookie year was for the ages.
What's the third time
You mention Foreman and Moss but not the third time you were excited by a draft pick. I am interested to see who that will be

Not so much on this post but for all the others...
If you look up contributions to the public that Randy either founded or contributes to you will find, he out does more than most pro athletes. Its just not something the press ever went on about. Also statements like “only if he had went about things like jerry Rice” are like saying if every QB does what Peyton Manning or Montana does lah lah, rather blind vision. Randy has never been busted toeting a gun or kicking some ex wife down the stairs. or such. Geee he rants about some chow. Like no one here has never looked twice at someone that cut you off in traffic so forth. In a nut shell going on about Randy and all the what ifs actually is part of the medias problem feeding the flame. Any way you look at it Randy the player rocked and changed a load of defensive strat. The antics on or off are small compared to a guy who put his first fortunes into dog fighting and not only but also killing those that did not fit the bill. Pure and simple you either accept the guy and know what that brings or you dont but dont sit and try to change reality, Randy rocked!

Thank you
Cris Carter was talking on Mike and Mike about Moss the day after they announced his retirement.
He was saying how Moss spent countless hours with his wife and kids and there never ever was any disrespect and his family loves him. He was saying how Moss use to take him to the hospital with him to visit the children. He said how Moss use to bring some cancer patients to games but would never tell anyone and he paid for it himself. I am sure many of you recall Moss handing the ball to a kid after scoring a TD. He did this quite often. Carter went on to talk about what Velvet is saying above.
Apparently the author of this post does not know very much about all of Moss’ charitable contributions. Especially to children.
If you do not know about something then how can you speak on it?
Those that a know, wont tell. Those that a tell, don’t know.
It never ends with Moss. He is not what you want him to be so he is bad. He played very very very well during his career. Not many have played better. Who am I to say he should or could have done more? Unless you played in the NFL then you have no idea what it takes to play WR. His career was good enough for me and all the rest is just BS.
You need to check your facts as well. Carter was cut by Philly and left the Vikings on his own.
In 2001, the Vikings floundered with a record of 5–11, their first losing season since 1990. Carter’s production dipped to its lowest point since 1992 (mostly because of QB Spergon Wynn’s ineffectiveness in the last three games)—73 catches, 871 yards, 6 TD—and his streak of eight straight Pro Bowls came to an end. Following the season, the longest-tenured Viking exercised an out clause in his contract that ended his career in Minnesota.
Rice did not get cut by San Francisco but they let him go and did not offer him a new deal after all he did. Then he asked to be traded from Oakland and went to Seattle.
Completely disagree
The problem with Randy wasn’t his off the field behavior. While it was stupid, I agree it’s not nearly as bad as a lot of professional athletes. Yea, he contributed a lot to his communities. I’m not going to congratulate him for that, because that’s not why he does it, and that’s specifically why he doesn’t make a big deal out of it.
The problem with Randy was his ON THE FIELD behavior. Everyone acts like because he was the Freak, and made ridiculous plays, that it makes up for his complete lack of effort a large majority of his playing time.
As he got older, if you took him out of the game early, he simply quit trying. Tice realized this, and began the Randy ratio.
Look at his time in Oakland. Look at what happened in New England after the honeymoon was over. Belicheck got fed up with him… considering he’s one of the best coaches ever in the NFL, I’ll tend to put some stock into his actions. Look at what happened when he came back. Look at what happened when only one team claimed him off waivers, and how that turned out in Tennessee.
The problem was his effort. Randy was all about Randy, and not about the team. If he didn’t think a SuperBowl was possible, or he didn’t think he was going to catch a touchdown, he simply was not interested.
Imagine if every player from your favorite team acted like this!
Randy Moss is a disgrace compared to Minnesota athletes like Kevin Garnett, Kirby Puckett, John Randle, Torii Hunter, Adrian “ALL DAY” Peterson!!!

Did you drink a gallon of Haterade?
The reason Moss left the Vikings in the first place was the fact the TEAM was not winning! Red Mccombs decided there needed to be a shake up. Either he would fire Tice or trade his biggest asset to get players to improve the rest of the team. (This is taken from different interviews of both Tice & McCombs) It wasn’t because of his production or antics. It was simple math 1 player for player & picks. His years in Oakland were a joke, just check Warren Sapp’s words on playing for the Raiders! With the Pats he was back to being “The Freak”. Its not TRULY known why he was traded look at the “Hoodie” & his history of getting what he can for players that he will be phasing out for 1 reason or another. (See: Richard Seymore"
You want to bash him for taking plays off? Most of them do! Playing when he wants to play? How many look like world beaters one week, then you can’t find for a week. How bout this? He still put up better years in his WORST than B-Twice has in his best!

You are wasting your time with this dude
He does not even understand the garbage that is coming out of his mouth.
Everyone wants to talk about Oakland. If this dude checked his stats on that team he will see Moss led them in receiving his first year. 60 catches for over 1005 yards and 8 TDs. And that was with Kerry Collins and then Marques Tuiasosopo. Then in 2006 they brought in an offensive coordinator who had been working in a bed and breakfast for the prior 10 years. he still was second in receiving while catching passes from Andrew Walter (who?), and Marques Tuiasosopo. It is clear that this dude does not know the facts about what went down in Oakland and is only repeating what the media reported. Somehow Moss was suppose to single handedly win games. He was suppose to throw the ball and catch it too apparently.
The media was all over him saying how he was done and all that. Well we know what happened after that don’t we. He goes to a real team and plays with the best QB he had ever played with for his entire career and breaks the TD record. And this was in his 10th year in the league. The next two years he did great too. Then New England decided they were not going to pay him and trading him so they can get something in return (ROI). Unlike the Vikings front office, the Patriots prefer to get something for a player that they know they are not going to resign. Sometimes they do not but with high profile players they usually do.
Like I said, this dude does not know what he is talking about. If he does then he would provide one quote from a teammate or coach on his team where they said he was dogging it and where they said they did not want him on the team.
Last year was the only year where it was whacked. You cannot even count Oakland because that franchise was so dysfunctional (and still is) that no player did well. Not just Moss. No one.
In the end, it is all about fans and media who are placing their own expectations on another person. Who has the right to do that? Nobody. He did pretty dang good for someone taking plays off.
But haters gotta hate! I know what time it is with Wu! Keep hatin’!

Well said Mark...
I was reading some of the comments from defensive backs talking about the taking plays off legend and they were saying how what Randy was doing was lulling defensive backfields into just that thought and then burning you just when you took the bait. Seems from his stats he knew what he was doing.

I have been posting that for awhile
It is like what John Stockton use to do in basketball. If you reached in on him he would clamp down on your arm and when you tried to pull it out he would flop a little bit and get the call. It is called being smart and sometimes conserving your energy. Moss was asked to run probably 30 40 yard dashes a game.
Sometimes he was just gassed. But if he goes out then the safety can come up into the box. So he stayed in and took the play off. But at least he took two defenders with him.
I am sure there are numerous times where he did not go all out too. But it is a game that he played and just like a pitcher, you cannot throw the fast ball every pitch. You got to mix it up.
But some fans are not smart enough to understand the word subterfuge.
I don’t really care what anyone says. I will take him on my team all day every day and twice on Sundays.
I like those 153 TDs.
Yupp
So much unseen variables you just would not know unless doing it at that level. But yeah I agree definately on my team.

You're right
Haters gotta Hate!
If you ever check some of Sapp’s comments on his time in Oakland you’ll be in tears from laughter. My favorite is the "… It was about 2nd & 3, I’m sittin on the bench next to Trace Armstrong, & one of the phones rings. He turns to me & says “looks like we’re going deep!” I asked why? He says “the old man just called down!”

Gotta say Bellicheck seemed like he was sad to see Randy go
And Brady made an effort to keep him on the team. I don’t think the Pat’s tossed him because he was an issue, I think they traded him because Bellicheck is an evil genius and Childress was an utter buffoon looking to lose his milk money..
Childress gone, TJack gone, new stadium on the way: it's like that Christmas when Santa brought prostitutes!
Kevin Garnett once called an opponent a cancer patient.
Randy Moss is not a disgrace he is one of, if not THE greatest Vikings WR’s of all time!
Small change
Velvet, I couldn’t agree with you more!
Look at professional athletes. Most of them, or alot of them come from humble upbringings. They are thrust into the spotlight and we expect them to be perfect citizens.
Not going to happen. In Randys case, he was very mild in his off field issues. I thought he did fine. With his talent and ability , the media really had to dig to find stories about him. Most explosive and game changing receiver to ever play, will miss him! Skol

Say won't you play another somebody done somebody wrong song?
Goodbye, Randy Gene. I guess we never knew you at all…
Sure, growing up skinny in West Virginia was pretty freaky, and not in a good way.
I guess we could call Frank back from the grave to sing again that he did it his way.
I was once a Falcon fan when the team offense consisted soley of having the defense stop someone so we could see Neon Deion run like greased lightning on a punt return. You can be flashy and not just play when you want to play.
But Brad Johnson has that Super Bowl ring for a very good reason: Football is a team sport.
Ask Al Davis.
This is Randy
and I don’t care. I have more money than you will ever have.
This is Randy again
I still don’t care. You put more effort into this post than I put into all of last season.
This is Randy (3)
I’ll be backkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk! ; )

It's Randy. Still here.
Retirement is boooring. I haven’t seen a caterer to yell at all day. Damn! Is this really how the rest of the world lives? Where’s my agent at?
Randy was the most exciting player I have ever seen.
Honestly I like Randy, I liked his off the field issues. I don’t think man was meant to live in a world of white walls and buttoned up shirts all the time. If you can’t enjoy yourself then why the heck are you here in the first place. Show me a bit of life, don’t let fear of the establishment stick you into a narrow hole afraid to breathe. Wow I sound like one of those nut jobs I make fun of…
Anyway, didn’t much like the way he pouted or stomped off the field but then hey I really doubt he cared if I didn’t like it, and I’m cool with that.
He was the most exciting player I have ever seen and I will remember games he played to the day I die, and I guess that’s all I really have to say.
