Rhett Bomar Makes Vikings' QB Depth Chart Easier To Sort Out
There's really no question that the Minnesota Vikings' depth chart at the quarterback position for the 2011 season is going to have Donovan McNabb at the top, with Joe Webb and Christian Ponder (in whichever combination) behind him.
But, if any of you were holding out hope for Rhett Bomar to make a charge. . .well, sorry.
Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Bomar was arrested for DUI in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was taken to the Blue Earth County Jail, but had been released by Sunday evening.
Bomar was selected by the New York Giants with the fifteenth pick of the fifth round (151st overall) in the 2009 Draft out of Sam Houston State. He started his college career at Oklahoma, but was dismissed from the team after it was learned that he received payments for work that he didn't do for an auto dealership owned by a Sooner booster.
So, a guy that was going to get cut anyway just gave the Vikings a good reason to cut him. And that's the end of that chapter.

So....
Is that enough to kill his NFL hopes for good? Jeez….
Naaa...
There are plenty of regular posters here who will say he deserves another chance in Minnesota, because he’s a ‘beast’/‘stud’/‘diamond in the rough’/(insert overused internetism here).
Just like the ones who are still mad they didn’t pick up any of those other clowns in free agency who would be in prison if they couldn’t play football.
See ya, Bomar. More talent than brains, and still not even that talented to begin with.
This is funny
Because a buddy of mine posted on FB that he passed AP and Shiancoe walking into a bar in downtown Mankato. I guess it was a team night on the town?
Just a bad decision to get in the car..take a cab back, man. I know there are posters EVERYWHERE in the bars with the numbers..with the amount they get paid, even if it is the minimum (Which I wont make in a year!!) they can afford to take a cab for a night.
Hey....
Remember when all those idiots kept saying that this would be JA’s problem when we first got him? I’d like to hear some explanations from those people!
I thought T-Camp was like boot camp ?
I didn’t know they could leave the premisses….or even have the time or energy to go bar hopping through Mankato after practice.
They just started camp a few days ago, and they’re already out drinking.
Sounds like the coaching staff isn’t running these guys hard enough!
well.
obviously at least one guy was drinking- bomar.

Well yeah...
I can’t see anyone else being that stupid that actually matter to this team tho. Knock on wood.
quite a few
of those in Mankato, and the bar they were seen entering is called Red Rocks. I believe it’s the closest thing this rinky-dink town has to a nightclub.

I don’t think the intensity of practices will have any affect on what they do on their day off. Though, with the lockout it could affect how many of them get a soft tissue injury, of which the Vikings have had 0. Gotta be smart about it, look at their conditioning, ease them in accordingly. And they do get 1 day off (though most of the guys in camp need it to learn the playbook), they’re not in jail… Well, except for Bomar I guess.
Damn
I thought he would beat out McNabb,Ponder, and Webb guess ill have to revamp my F.F. roster.
Well,
I’m sure he knew full well that he was odd man out and would have to apply for backup in Buffalo, Arizona, or whatever team that need’s a skilled clipboard holder. There is no excuse for drunk driving, but I think a good deal of these guys hit the pubs- preseason in particular- and hope that he can get it together and learn from this.

You guys have already drafted? Little soon dontcha think?
What happens if someone gets popped in training camp?
Childress gone, TJack gone, new stadium on the way: it's like that Christmas when Santa brought prostitutes!
I know has no
tie in except I was drunk when made the picks and he was drunk and caught driving, diff is I cant afford a D.U.I. and as an adult I need know diff.Thers nothing wrong getting drunk,we all do it,just be smart,if you had 1 sip beer or bev of choice you cant drive.
1 sip of any alcohol you cant drive, includes swallowing, you toke, snort, mainline, you cant drive.
Have nothing against partying,but if you do hand the keys over,tired of hearing,alchol is a factor,drugs is a factor;
We hold our Football players to a standard that we dont hold to ourselves,we cant hold them to rules unless they apply to ourselves.
sigh....
I hate that for him. I hate that for anyone who gets behind the wheel drunk.
I hate the fact that he was at a bar with his TEAM MATES (still at that point) and was allowed to get behind the wheel of a car….
Why was there a bar outing during training camp at all!?!!? DEHYDRATION anyone lol.

I feel sorry for him
Bomar worked hard preparing for this season with the Vikings. He attended the voluntary workouts in Bradenton with the Ponder/Webb group, and put in the extra time and effort to try to get into shape and learn the new playbook. He probably was proceeding with the idea that the QB depth chart would be Ponder or Webb as first and second strings, and that he would be third. The lockout, and the FO being forced to bring in a veteran blew those hopes out the window, and I’m sure that fact was driven home during Saturday night’s practice, where he found himself the odd man out. I’d be willing to bet that feelings of dejection and concern for his future played a big part in him over-indulging and getting arrested. I hope he is able to find a spot on a roster somewhere. He’s just one of those people who always seems to have things turn out badly for him.
What a shame.
Maybe he’ll just have to get a normal job like the rest of us.

Err
You feel bad for somebody who decided it would be a good idea to drink and drive?
by domesticllama on Aug 8, 2011 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions
Two different things
I’m not sure that he “decided” or thought anything. That’s the problem with drinking and driving. The individual’s judgment becomes clouded or distorted by the alcohol, and they don’t think.
I’m not saying that I sympathize with him for the penalties he’ll receive for breaking the law, nor that I condone what he did. I do, however find it unfortunate that this incident may cost him far more than the usual fines, raised insurance rates, etc. that one normally gets from a DUI. His poor decision making has quite probably cost him his last chance of making it in the NFL, even on a journeyman level. If that is the case, the punishment may exceed the crime. I’m fairly sure that that is not part of the standard sentencing guidelines in Minnesota. Even so, Bomar will have brought it upon himself, and he’ll have to live with the consequences.
So if you have that much of a problem with your judgement
Then get your keys off of you before you start. There really is no excuse, so stop trying to make one.

Id also like to point out...
Nowhere in any article I find on it does it show where he was weaving, swerving or driving erratically…it could of been, sports car 3 am and a pull over just to check.
Alot of people can blow over the legal limit, yet not show or act drunk in any manner.
And when youre a big boy like Bomar….
The charge is for drunk driving, not reckless or speeding as well.

Oh, so its ok to drink and drive
With terrible reaction times as long as you can put on your cruise control and drive in a straight line?
by domesticllama on Aug 8, 2011 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions
Excuse me?
I never condoned his drinking or driving, but thanks for infereing what you wanted to attempt to make a point, one that doesnt exist.
**Rupert for ProBowl 2012!**
Bye bye Bomar
I don’t support QB’s that have a lot of physical talent but can’t get it together mentally, not anymore, not after TJack. Maybe we can sign an O-Lineman with this opening besides we already have our three QB’s.
