Vikings in Fantasy: McNabb a Viable #2 QB, Berrian is a Sleeper
There have been numerous articles written about the Vikings prospects for Fantasy Football, and guess what, here’s one more! I’m an avid fan of fantasy football and have been playing for many years, as well as running a league as commissioner. What follows is my very first fan post, which is an analysis of each fantasy football position, and who on the Vikings squad is start-able/roster-able for the 2011 season. There are only 3 players worth starting on offense, but there are several Vikings players worth having on your fantasy roster. Read the analysis after the jump.
Quarterback: Many rankings have Donovan McNabb outside the top 20, making him barely draft-able in standard 10-team leagues. I think this is underestimating what he will do this season. He may not be startable during the first few weeks of the season while he continues to get familiar with the playbook, but a weekly stat line of 225 yards and 2 TDs later in the season is very reasonable. This is the kind of stat line Matt Ryan put up with Bill Musgrave in Atlanta, and I expect McNabb to put up similar numbers and be a reliable #2 QB in most leagues. This makes him a more-than-capable bye week fill-in. There is plenty of upside to like with the long bomb to speedsters Berrian and Harvin.
Running back: Obviously, you’re drafting Adrian Peterson in the first round. He has been one of the most reliable RB during his career and hasn’t missed any significant time…could this be the year he does? Toby Gerhart is worth picking up to stash on your bench and handcuff Peterson. Toby has looked improved this Preseason, and I think he’ll be a capable fill-in if the unthinkable happens and Peterson misses any time. I wouldn't draft Booker, unless you're in a super deep league that rewards return yards.
Wide Receiver: The only real starter of the bunch is Percy Harvin, and I have him as a solid #2 option. He’ll be the #1 guy on the Vikings at the end of the year, but compared to other elite options across the league, he won’t put up monster numbers. 80 yards and a score would be a great day for Harvin, and he always has the possibility for some rushing yards and return yards, so he has more value in leagues that reward return yards. I like Bernard Berrian as a late-round flyer in drafts and think he’s worth stashing on the bench as a sleeper. There is so much potential there for he and McNabb to hook up on a couple long bombs each game, that if they get going, he turns into a sneaky flex play. Until I see something out of Michael Jenkins, I wouldn’t bother with a roster space except in very deep leagues with 3 or more WR. Nobody else is worth utilizing.
Tight End: This is where it gets interesting. We all know McNabb loves throwing to the tight end, and I think Visanthe Shiancoe could see a return to his massive 2009 numbers. Most analysts have Shiancoe out of the top 20, which is ridiculous, especially considering he's in a contract year. There are some concerns though: how much will Kyle Rudolph steal away, and how healthy is his hamstring? We haven’t seen Shiancoe in the Preseason, and he hasn’t gotten a lot of work with McNabb yet. But that doesn’t make him un-roster-able. For the time being, I see Shiancoe as a #2 TE with starter potential down the line. Kyle Rudolph is an enigma at this point. He looked great in the Preseason, but I would expect Shiancoe to take over most of the kind of looks Rudolph got. I wouldn’t roster Rudolph, but he should be on the radar, especially if Shiancoe’s hamstring injury lingers, or becomes more serious. In that case, Rudolph would become borderline starter material in my opinion.
Defense/Special Teams: I think the days of the Vikings D/ST as an elite fantasy start are over. I wouldn’t roster them, except maybe in the case of a bye-week fill in if the matchup is favorable. Jared Allen can still get you some sacks, and Sherels/Booker/Harvin as return men have a lot of upside for some scores. But this secondary won’t pull down a lot of interceptions, and without the Williams Wall, they won’t be the dominate run-stuffers and smothering defense they used to be.
Kicker: Ryan Longwell is as consistent a kicker as there is, on the field. Unfortunately, the kicker position in fantasy is the least consistent, and it is next to impossible to predict who will be the stars in any given year. I think the Vikings offense will be capable enough of moving the ball, but not effective enough in the red zone, which should put Longwell in position to put up major points. With his consistency and accuracy on the field, I would roster Longwell and have faith he’ll put up respectable top 10 numbers by the end of the season.
Individual Defensive Players: There are only two players on the defense who are going to put up consistent enough tackles and sacks to be worth rostering: Chad Greenway and Jared Allen. Both are beasts, and Greenway should have another great tackle total.
To summarize, I think there are only 3 offensive fantasy starters on the Vikings this year: Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin and Ryan Longwell. Those are the obvious choices, but I think there are plenty of other Vikings worth drafting and keeping on the roster as backups, handcuffs or sleepers: Donovan McNabb, Bernard Berrian, Visanthe Shiancoe and Toby Gerhardt. Keep Kyle Rudolph on your radar though, especially in keeper leagues, because he's the future of the TE position in Minnesota.

The only addition I would make is
Winfield as a IDP player. He gets a lot of tackles and usually makes a big TD play somewhere.

Good Point
I considered Winfield, but admitedly, my experience with IDP is limited. He’s the best tackling corner in the NFL, so after Greenway, he should put up some decent tackle totals, and if the defensive uses him like they did in the Philly game last year, he could see some increases in his sack total too.

Not really
But yeah, McNabb stunk it up. I guess I should have knocked on wood first. McNabb has nowhere to go but up at this point. I still think he has value going forward.

Yeah After todays game
I would trade McNabb for a sack of potatoes…… There is no way he is going to be viable.
that may be a bit extrreme..
…unless they’re the yummy russet potatoes, with the reddish skin…then maybe

Hinsight being 20/20
…makes this a tough read.
I understand the McNabb love, but the “Berrian as a sleeper pick” was nutty to begin with. “Stashing him on the bench” is the 2nd best call you could make at this point. Cutting him outright would be my first move.
I stand by the post
Notice I wrote, " He may not be startable during the first few weeks of the season while he continues to get familiar with the playbook". Keep in mind, McNabb also had a wrist injury on his throwing arm. Did McNabb put up fantasy points this week? Not of the starter variety, but give him a few weeks and, assuming he’s healthy, I still like the potential. At the end of the day, McNabb put up more fantasy points this week than Ben Roethelisberger, Sam Bradford and Matt Cassel, and most analysts had all 3 ranked higher than McNabb for the season.
But, I won’t be a McNabb apologist all season. He sucked yesterday. And I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong. But the point remains, at this point, I still think he’s a viable #2, just give him a few more weeks to learn more of the playbook and get his timing down with the receivers.

No mention of your terrible Berrian and Shiancoe predictions...
I can see why you made your McNabb prediction as a viable #2, you bought into the usual Vikings offseason hype koolaid-a-thon. It happens to the best of us but why in the world would you ever think Berrian is a sleeper pick in FF? Lol that is just bad. I’m not sure Brickhands Berrian could even cut it in the CFL or UFL.
And you say Shiancoe not in the top 20 of TEs is ridiculous. The only thing that is ridiculous is that statement. Shiancoe has not even been very good for a couple of years now. He had a severe case of the Bernard Berrian dropsies all of last season. Rudolph is already better than him.

Look up "sleeper"
We all know Berrian has trouble, but the fact is, the potential for the deep ball is there. They hit in training camp, and they hit it in the preseason. A sleeper is someone who is not expected to have a great season, but has potential to. Berrian fits that bill perfectly, because we all expect him to suck. We all know he has potential to be the deep speed guy, but he has never lived up to that potential, hence: sleeper.
As for Shiancoe, I could be proven wrong, but until McNabb gets his passing attack going, we’ll never know. I’ll revisit this at the mid-point of the season to see if my calls were right or not. But, it’s a little premature to call any of these predictions terrible after only 1 week.

Berrian
We all know Berrian has trouble, but the fact is, the potential for the deep ball is there.
Only if his coverage trips over their own feet, gets distracted by a hot cheerleader, or otherwise blows it, will Berrian get open. He’s very fast, but only in comparison to guys like… hmmm, I was going to say Favre, but I think Favre is faster than Berrian. McKinnie! Berrian is faster than McKinnie! Maybe. McKinnie looked ok with the Ravens this week, so that might not be true any longer… Let’s see, who’s left…. Well, you get the point. He’s probably faster than… Musgrave! Or Frazier!
Even if Berrian was fast, and even if he did get separation based on his own speed rather than someone else screwing up, he still isn’t likely to actually be able to CATCH the ball. Let it bounce off his shoulder pads, his chest, his stomach, his thighs, his foot, yes. That he can do. But catching footballs isn’t his strong point.
Ah, ah,

I expect Berrian to continue to suck
As does everyone else. I just hope that the potential they showed in training camp and the preseason shines at some point in the season. And if Berrian can overcome his obvious limitations (stone hands, age, lack of desire, diminishing deep speed), then maybe he has a chance to revive himself. And if he does…SLEEPER! :P
SKOL
Berrian still asleep
So, after 3 games, I’ll admit I was wrong on Berrian. He sucks, and it was stupid to assume anything has changed. McNabb is nothing but a bye week filler in super deep or 2QB leagues. Granted, he’s steadily improved from a fantasy perspective each week, and there is potential for him to put up more consistent double-digit point totals each week. But when guys like Colt McCoy and Alex Smith are out-producing you from a fantasy perspective, things aren’t going well. Hey, at least he’s doing better than Andy Dalton and Tarvaris Jackson in fantasy, so it could be worse.
With the offensive struggles, I may end up being wrong on Longwell too, but based on yesterday’s effort, I’m sticking by him as a starter.
