The Vikings Need To Make A Roster Move

Okay, so the Vikings have this big dude named Kevin Williams that has to be added to the roster tomorrow, now that his two-game suspension is officially over. In order for him to go onto the roster, obviously somebody has to go. I don't know about you, but boy howdy, I've got a couple of suggestions.

The first one would be Bernard Berrian. I said this last week, and I'll say it again. . .this guy never should have been on the roster coming out of camp. He's a speed receiver with no speed, and shows absolutely no will or desire when the ball is coming his way. In two games this season, he has one more reception than I do. Yeah, I know that he restructured his contract and blah blah blah. Who cares? Are you seriously telling me that if we plugged Devin Aromashodu or Emmanuel Arceneaux into Berrian's spot at this point that we'd really lose anything? Hell no, we wouldn't lose anything.

Or, if you're going to cut a defensive player, look no further than Tyrell Johnson. Jamarca Sanford has clearly outplayed Johnson this season at the safety spot opposite of Husain Abdullah, and Johnson's missed interception that could have, potentially, sealed the deal for the Vikings this afternoon is basically the last straw for me. If we're going to try to work some young guys into the lineup this season, get Johnson the heck out of town and give Mistral Raymond some run in his place.

Of course, the pessimist in me says that we're going to cut someone with some talent and potential instead.

What do you folks think? Who ends up getting dumped tomorrow when the Vikings need to bring back Kevin Williams?

I’m still too depressed to care about who we drop. I’ll check back in tomorrow.

Well it should be BB or Johnson

But it is probably going to be Fred Evans.

If it's not Tyrell Johnson

I have to wonder who he has dirt on. He’s done absolutely nothing to prove he deserves to be on an NFL roster. But, like you said, it’ll probably be someone like Allen Reisner, who they have already cut once this year.

I’m hoping for Johnson, but I’m thinking it’ll be someone like Reisner, Larry Dean, or D’Aundre Reed.

Well, many of the decision makers who probably had a big opinion in the decision to move up in round 2 to get him (Spielman, Frazier, Studwell) still have primo parking spots at Winter Park. Given the lack of better alternatives, I think the equity some important people have in Johnson is the sole reason he still sees playing time.

But I agree. At this point I don’t know how they can’t realize Johnson gives them nothing…

(Although I still think he could play a little on a team that utilizes “box” style safeties more…)

by jianfu on Sep 19, 2011 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd guess Berrian is safe for now since they'd have to pay him out

Look at the bright side:

After the MOnday night game against two winless teams (one of whom will improve to 1-1), the Vikings will be one of only 7 0-2 teams left.

If the draft were held Tuesday morning, they’d pick no later than #7!

Better yet, the 0-2 Panthers have Newton and a good o-line, while the Rams (0-1) have Bradford and a good line as well.

That means there would be no more than 4 teams picking ahead of MN that need a QB (Luck) or LT (Kalil).

Don’t you all feel better now? The Vikings could possibly land Luck or Kalil in the 1st, and Michael Floyd in the 2nd. That would be so awesome, I’m almost ready to start rooting against them…

by rovibe on Sep 18, 2011 11:01 PM CDT reply actions

And.....

if we can move Ponder to a mid-draft team for a 2nd round in 2012, and maybe a 3rd round in 2013 then, that additional second round pick could be Nate Potter, Andrew Datko or the new lightweight Matt Reynolds.

R1. Luck
R2a. Floyd
R2b. One of Datko, Potter or Floyd.

Good teams can have poor seasons.

The Bills revival is no fluke. Yes they were 4-12 last year. But there were few blowouts. In a number of games they were close – 8pts to the Pats, 3pts with the Ravens and Bears and Steelers.

Drafting high – trading a fan favourite (Marshawn Lynch) for picks, getting a waiver wire pickup in Shawn Merriman ….

I would make a similar move for Ryan Harris OT. He may be injured this season but is a top RT and potential LT and definitely an instant upgrade over Loadholt and Johnson for next year.

What a craptastic way to lose

Too many opportunities to put that game out of reach and the Vikings were hesitant to do it. How many times are we going to get a personal foul call that totally kills us!! AHH.

Part of me wants to be pissed at someone or something on this team, but they all collectively contributed to give this game up. As important as every game is in a 16 game season, we still havn’t played a division foe, and it starts next week. I’d say 0-2 could be worse, like getting blown out with no hope of any success (Chiefs, Seahawks)

This team will and can put W’s up, they just need to fix this second half collapse, its driving me nuts

This is funny

Try to follow the logic, because I can’t:

The Vikings released Ryan Cook, and kept Jon Cooper on the final roster cuts. Miami pounced on Cook, and released last year’s starting center Joe Berger to make room for Cook. The Vikings see Joe Berger, and pounce on him… releasing Jon Cooper to clear a spot.

It’s kind of like they traded Ryan Cook for Joe Berger, and released Cooper. Or something.

I dont think so

He didnt ruin the game by any means, but non of his passes were on target. Most were catchable, but none were great. He didnt do anything bone-headed like many a qb of the past, but we really need more than that at this point. I say if we dont win 2 games by week 8 we start one of our younger guys and move on. No offense to McNabb, he really didnt do poorly, but we need all the help we can get not “good enough”

They let Ross Homan go…we didn’t lose him…he was on waiver wire for almost two weeks before tampa picked him up….Vikings made no effort to keep him.

As someone stated Reed is a good choice to get cut and place on PS. I had thought Evans, but Reed makes a little more sense…he’s not vested.
Sapp may be a pickup….if so, they let go Johnson, or A.Allen…my guess is they were waiting until after this game to see how the DB’s like A.A. played in game. Sapp is no hero….a career backup DB…but a little better than A.Allen.

Oh how I wish they cut Berrian…..would promoting Arcenneaux off of the PS be that much of a falloff? money would be the only thing holding them back from cutting him.

Beginning to question our coaches player decisions and loyalty to players like Berrian and Tyrell….Childress used to say that TJ “practiced well and you just don’t see that”….well….we’ve all got eyes.

Luck? It won't ever happen and shouldn't.

I’m tired of reading posts by fellow Vikings fans about Andrew Luck. First off, if the team doesn’t jettison that loser Berrian, then I will have lost another big chunk of faith in their judgment. He is making a mockery of the position with his attitude and lack if any production. As for Luck – do any realistic fans really think the poor kid would want to come here? He would get annihilated behind that line, and probably wind up injured. The team has tied up most of its resources in a RB who will shortly be on the wrong side of his prime years. The WR corps is far from the envy of other NFL teams. If I were Andrew’s agent or parents, I would urge him to make it clear he doesn’t want to be drafted by certain teams. He may well be a once-in-a-generation QB, so he should be strategically careful about where he places his loyalty. (ala Elway or Eli Manning) It won’t make him popular, but it would be a wise career move to try to find the right team with the right situation, right off the bat. Anyway, I love the Vikings, but feeel sick about the progression and decisions over the last several years. As much as I loved Brett Favre and admired what he added in ‘09, I didn’t embrace the strategy of the “all-in” philosophy, because i felt it was dangerous to be so short-sighted. Now, whether they want to admit it or not – and they do not seem to want to – this team is facing a thorough rebuilding phase, at the least enviable time in its history. The stadium issue and the securing of the franchise in Minnesota should be priority #1. Then, the systematic dismantling and rebuilding of the roster is in order. They invested their faith and money in Ponder just this year, And I doubt they would even draft Luck if he were theirs to draft. There’s too much else to address and this team has never displayed the right stuff when it comes to drafting and grooming a QB otF. I’m sad to say I’ve lost a ton of faith in the ownership and management – and coaches. I am not a fan of Frazier and feel he is in way over his head. Not the right stuff to be a head coach, like so many other assistants who never should have ascended beyond their range. Nice man, good enough DC, but never gonna make it as a Head Coach. By December, those who criticize me for being disloyal will see I am merely being realistic. I have been faithfully believing the Vikings would bring home a Super Bowl trophy since 1970. The fact that I now have to face the likelihood that I will die before it happens, makes me question my own sanity for believing for so long. I do not see this franchise ever bringing the Lombardi home, unless they make dramatic moves in-house (FO) and on the field. The damn Lions will win a Super Bowl before we do, I would bank on that.

Look into the history a bit

And research the two examples I mentioned already. Let’s say (for sake of discussion) that the team drafting Number One in April 2012 is deemed an undesirable option for luck (assuming he is still viewed as highly as he is today). And let’s assume he makes it publicly known that he has no interest in ever suiting up for whatever franchise it is with that pick. It has happened before is all I’m saying. That team then has a few tough decisions to make. They can trade the pick, but other teams know the precarious situation they are in, so that impacts the trade offers a bit. Or they can draft said player and see what happens. But there is the likelihood of a protracted holdout, which doesn’t help a rebuilding organization. There is the PR mess to clean up too. I am not predicting, just postulating. My concerns center on the way the Front Office has been handling many personnel decisions (including drafts) for a few years. I was not a fan of Childress (was when he came aboird, but learned not to believe in him) or Bevell (again, he proved unworthy of my faith over time), and I am not sure Ponder was the best way to go. I see a quagmire situation with the stadium, the health of the team (as far as how competitive they can truly be over the next several years), and I’m very disheartened. Fanbvoys and delusionists like to criticize anything I say that seems negative, btu I know how loyal I have been as a fan since 1970. I just feel tired of it all – waiting all these years to get that ONE Super Bowl win. Do I still hope for the best? YES. Do I believe I will see the team I support hoist the Lombardi trophy in the next 5-10 years? Um, I see little reason to actually believe that until I see the steps that might restore my faith. And… God forbid this team moves to another state – that will sever my loyalty forever. The Vikings belong in Minnesota, no question. And if they move, I will blame the current owner as much as any factor. For hiring the wrong coaches (yes, I am also not a fan of Frazier and can almost guarantee he will end up a Coordinator again soon, and will not be a HC again), for allowing the FO to make too many dubious decisions, and for going “All In” at the cost of the long-term health of the franchise. I apologize if my comments hurt any feelings, but I do have the right to state my opinions and as a fan for decades, I believe I have at least earned the latitude to criticize once in awhile.

flaw in your logic

Andrew Luck is likely going to be a very high pick, if not the first pick. That means he’ll be selected by a TERRIBLE team no matter who is selecting him.

You don’t get yourself into position to draft a guy like him if you don’t have a lot of holes to fill.

He won’t have what little leverage players had in the past. Rules have been changed more to the favor of the teams, less to the rookies and their agents. He’ll play for whoever drafts him and pretend to love it even if he doesn’t. Guaranteed money on that.

by rovibe on Sep 19, 2011 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

My thoughts on your thoughts

You seem to be vague in much of your discussion.

Why arent you a fan of Frazier, specifically? How can the Vikings turn this around? Explain how the FO and coaches are negatively affecting the organization for the next decade.

by redhearring on Sep 19, 2011 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm no expert and never claimed to be.

Just a fan for a very long time- through hard times and good times. But, I’m tired of having my hopes dashed and lately, I don’t like the makeup of the team or the top people in the organization very much. I am just frustrated, but I do try to make judgments based upon calmly considering the pros and cons. I think they reached for Ponder. I have no idea how good or bad he will become and I have nothing against hi. I just don’t like the way the team painted themselves into a corner and felt “forced” to draft a QBotF in a year when maybe there weren’t too many that could develop into the star we need. I love AD, but do not believe in making a RB the “face of the franchise” or paying one that much. I do not like the WRs, other than Harvin, of course. Jenkins is a mediocre guy who is on the downside of an average NFL career.

My issues with Frazier are: I find him dull and uninspiring. I prefer a Head Coach who is more of dynamic presence. I would also have preferred a more seasoned guy with head coaching experience if possible. I sensed other teams failed to sign him, despite quite a few interviews the past several years – probably based upon his personality. He has a decent track record as a DC, but I feel he lacks the intangibles to light a fuse under a team.

As for how the team turns this around, that’s a loaded question. They need to get the stadium issue resolved ASAP, first of all. They need to reassure the fan base that this franchise is here to stay, has a very solid plan to get back to playoff caliber, and put an exciting product on the field. The first order of business after stadium issues, is the QB position. If Ponder is really their guy, they need to groom him, teach him, inspire him and get him some in-season snaps now and then, to see how he fares under pressure. I don;‘t mean start him, but if the game is out of hand either way, they need to assess the kid. After all, he was a very high pick and should be able to handle mop-up duty now. They already committed heavily to Peterson. Fine, but I hope they reserved enough salary room to field a highly competitive team. If not, then what was the point? Peterson (I hope) wants to win a ring in his career. Maybe? I hope he does. But he cannot do it alone. The O-LIne is right up there with the QB position.A major overhaul is in order. Concoct a systematic plan to get that done. It will nbot be instantaneous nor easy to create a bonafide O-Line. I am definitely sour on Loadholt. Hutch was great , but the years have seemingly worn him down. I won’t go into more detail, but pretty much the entire Line will need to change over the next 2-3 years. Age or incompetence force the issue. Then, you have to get a top WR who can stretch the field. At least one! The Defense has holes to patch all over, as most of you know. The Defensive backfield is weak. There is a lot to do there. I do not believe Chris Cook was a proper draft pick. He is frail and I don’t think he’s a very dynamic player. How much more does Winfield have left to give? The Linebackers are good, but age is starting to be a consideration there too. I can’t continue the detailed breakdown, but most know we have a bunch of issues beyond these.

As for the FO and coaches, I seriously have to question the strategies displayed over recent years. From the hiring decisions (Childress, Bevell, Frazier, etc.) on the coaching staff, to thinking patching problems with aging veterans and cast-offs was a good idea, to the lack of halftime adjustments and inspirational presence – I just feel this is a team lacking real focus and direction, let alone stellar game time strategy. One litmus test is to listen to what other NFL players and coaches have to say about the Vikings organization (or what they don’t say). You hear many players praise other organizations, but rarely if ever hear anyone speak highly of the Vikings in that way. It concerns me. The team really could use a reinvention of sorts. I believe it’s time to bite the bullet and start from scratch. That means, build a nucleus that can win big and win for the long haul. Coaches, trainers, players, management – they all should be evaluated as if this was an expansion team.

Above all. I pray the team is going to stay put and get a vote of confidence from the government in the state. They need to be regarded as a state treasure, because that is what the franchise is. Moving would be unthinkable to me, as it would be to many of you I’m sure. Assuming they stay, they need to be upfront with the fans and state that this is a rebuilding period. The loyal fans would support the team during the few years of assembling a new nucleus. But, to keep patching things up the way they have is not gonna cut it. An attitude adjustment across the board is in order. Once that shifts, the possibilities are endless.

I'm certainly not dinging ya

I’ve learned that it’s not very helpful to be TOO negative but I do find myself agreeing on many of your opinions and points. I never considered Frazier to be our team savior and wonder if he’s going to soon be in even more over his head. I’m also starting to seriously doubt the moves and drafts made by our front office. In the past few years, only Harvin and Peterson really stand out (though I don’t dislike Gerhart and think he was a steal).

While I’ll always love the 2009 season despite the tough loss at the end, and I appreciate Favre’s time with us (regardless of last year’s results), it definitely cost us in the long run as far as rebuilding.

What’s so rough for our team is all the things we need fixed or solved:

1. New Stadium – So we don’t lose our frikkin’ team
2. Desperately need an entirely new O-line – or much of it
3. Need more depth and new blood at D-line too
4. DESPERATELY need a new Secondary, from top to bottom
5. Need some star Wide Receivers
6. Need Ponder to be the future QB for us OR acquire our future QB
7. And now we need LBs, by the looks of it
8. Finally, in about 2-3 years, we’ll need another RB

Ugh. How can we get on top of things with all of these needs? It’s insane.

by Wytefang on Sep 19, 2011 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions

He's had decent picks in the draft

’07 was really his best year when we got Peterson, Rice, and Robison. Since then, though, he, yes, has fallen off. Sanford was a good pick in the 7th round, and Loadholt, despite his ridiculous False Start penalties, is still a starting T on the team. But yes, aside from them and, obviously, Percy Harvin, he seemingly has started to slip with the draft magic.

And then these past couple drafts, he’s made really stretch picks with our 1st selection after there’s a run at our position of need. Once Gabbert was gone, I was hoping for Amukamara. Maybe he should have taken an O-lineman instead, given the injuries to Herrera and Hutch the last year. Solder, for instance, is doing pretty well in New England, and it would have eased the blow of cutting McKinnie. (Who, off tangently, struggled against Seattle. Uhh, where’s that guy thanking us for him again? Didn’t see him this week for some reason..)

If we win the Luck sweepstakes this year, I would really like for them to take him, though I do also fear they won’t since they just drafted ponder this last year. Let the kid play games, see if we need to pull a Panthers-like move and draft another, higher-potential QB despite taking a QB high this last draft.

With you Dizz...

I’ve posted at the begining of the season its going to be a 5-11 season. Kills me with people posting Luck for next year. very short sited, like its one guy that will turn this around. This is a Viking team that needs an over haul. I would say until they get some wide reciever threat its going to be a long season. This team cant score fast enough to really roll. And over the last years they dont play catch up well. People can flame me all they want but Id toss BB and make Moss an offer to come out of retirement. No one can tell me it would not be an upgrade over what we have now at WR. Sad thing is I have 4 ass kickin ticketts for the Dec 18th game against the Saints. I was hoping to be wrong on my take and have that game be worth sumsum.

Revised my prediction.

In August I posted that the team seemed set up for 6-10 at best. After seeing how things are playing out (at that time I presumed they would sign a deep WR threat for sure), I think 4-12 is the best they can do, given the lack of scoring potential, the shaky coaching/strategy, and the schedule. I want them to win every game (I feel I have to say the obvious for some blind loyalists) but as I see things, there are certain teams ascending, some plateauing and some descending in the NFL. Decide for yourself which group the Vikings currently are part of.

I respect your opinion

but on W-L, before the regular season did anyone really think the Vikes would win both of these first two games? So we are only one game different here at the start.

Second thing— not you but many people here seem to put responsibility for getting a new stadium on the team. It’s really up to the people and the fans, especially, to lead the charge on that. Anyone on this board who has not written / called / emailed / faxed their state representatives has not done their job. Come on! And if you live in Ramsey County, your county commissioner! It is so easy to send an email, and more effective and not much harder to pick up the phone and call a staff member who will make a record of your support. I interned for a state senator. They keep a running count of people who call, write, etc— the ayes and the nays, and send a letter to each one who contacts them, especially on a tricky issue like this one.

Lastly on the stadium, we are in the middle of what is going down in the history books as the Great Recession— the worst economic times in 80 years. This would be a hellish time for any pro team in Minny to try to get a new facility, especially if they are last in line. That is just poor luck, and can’t be pinned on the team.

But we can still do something about it. Put in a personal phone call to the staffer of the above three people (if you live in Ramsey County it’s three) and call Gov Dayton’s office for good measure so his staffers tell him “there’s still a lot of support for your position on the stadium.” 150 calls to Dayton’s office would send a big message. 5 calls to each Ramsey commissioner’s office would be a big deal (you have to be in their district— Google on it to find yours).

This is an action point. Do something about it if you haven’t yet. That way we have the peace of mind that we the taxpayers have told the right people we want money spent on this now.

The thing with Luck is like the thing with Manning the Colt were TERRIBLE

before he came there, now look at them. They are terrible again because he’s not playing. Picking up a QB like Luck (if he’s everything that’s advertised) is a huge deal.

He struggles to get open, and is slow. There’s your reasons.

by misterdizz on Sep 19, 2011 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Let's say...

The Vikings end up with the number one pick in next years draft. With Luck going number one (presumably), teams recognizing his potential will give up the house for him. The Vikings may well end up getting the team the need simply by letting Luck go to the highest bidder and racking up a ton of high picks. Look at what Atlanta did this year for Julio Jones. Imagine what teams would give for a talent like Andrew Luck.

by PurpleMullet on Sep 19, 2011 6:05 AM CDT reply actions

Yes

And with the new rookie wage scale, teams will now have an easier time making deals at the top of the first round, instead of being stuck with their own picks.

2010 – Sam Bradford gets $50 million guaranteed

2011 – Cam Newton gets $20 million guaranteed

Now that the numbers are so much lower, a team with the 1st overall pick can actually find a trading partner. Bring it on. The Vikings have too many areas to address, and they need to do it quickly before the wheels completely fall off and they’re stuck in a ditch for 4 years trying to rebuild. They can avoid that if the string together a couple very good drafts.

by rovibe on Sep 19, 2011 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Cut Berrian, and then...

…cut Tyrell Johnson (twice)!!! I said it before, I would rather the Vikings play with just 50 guys than keep Johnson on the team. This coaching staff shows that they are incapable of keeping him off of the field if he’s on the team. Best to just cut the cord and play with one fewer person on the bench. That’s better than playing with 10 guys on the field.

Fred Evans

I think the only reason he’s on the team right now is because of Kevin Williams being out.

by Grime on Sep 19, 2011 8:24 AM CDT reply actions

Could be

but they may let Reed go instead as stated above. Another team could possibly sign him to their practice squad I think.

Personally, I would let Frampton go. I know many feel he is a special teams ace but he offers nothing to the base defense. Even though Tyrell dropped that pick I do give him credit for being there in the first place and do realize there is a reason he is on defense. He has no hands. I will say that there Abdullah coming over to try and pick it too may have caused him to get nervous.

They need Tyrell and there is a reason he was in during the end of the game. People want to blame him but Griffen got beat pretty bad on that TD to Williams. He looked pretty slow trying to catch up. I do not think they should leave him in many one on one situations going forward. And Allen did not help matters either getting a stupid penalty.

I think the Tampa 2 defense is the problem. The safeties are told to keep things in front of them and the linebackers take deep drops allowing every 5 yard pass to be completed that a team wants. Sometimes I wonder if a player would do better in a different scheme?

It will be interesting who they release but not surprising. I doubt it is Frampton.

by MarkSP18 on Sep 19, 2011 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Come on...

Tyrell’s pick probably would of sealed the game for us, and your saying that he got nervous? There is a reason his playing and thats because of where they drafted him, and that his fast but lets be honest being just fast doesn’t get you anywhere. Also he was in (for some reason?) on Blount’s first TD run and if Sanford was in i bet that doesn’t go for a TD. We just need a solid free-safety and OJ Atogwe was a big miss for us, imagine how good our D would be with him. I agree on Griffen against Benn, i don’t think he realised that the ball was going to be thrown his way or he simply lost where Benn was.

by mns51 on Sep 19, 2011 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I do not believe they are playing Tyrell because of where he was drafted

I mean in his fourth year it is a little late to be worried about where you drafted Tyrell.

I think he has legitimate skills. I think that maybe he is thinking too much still.

I imagine that if and when he is released or next season rolls around another team will pick him up and he probably will play well.

I just am beginning to wonder about the Tampa 2 defense. Sharper did not do well here and then he goes to New Orleans and plays better or more to his skills.

It was said that Tyrell would be a good fit for the Tampa 2 in his scouting reports.

All I know is that Frazier is a secondary coach first and it is on him if he plays Tyrell and he continually under performs.

A team with only 1 or 2 mistakes from being 2-0

against the upper tier teams in the NFL is not a team that is a 4 win max team. 1 or 2 mistakes is correctable. I saw a huge progression from week 1 to week 2 (even in the 2nd half) I believe this team has every chance to beat the Lions and to say they don’t when the very same team had leads for 110 minutes out of 120. Actually its more like 115 out of 120. No doubt its dissapointing. All this team has to do is learn to play with pressure throughout the whole game. They seem to play relaxed and too confident after grabbing a hefty lead. This can be corrected and I don’t see why it won’t just because you think all the coaches are incompetent.

If you ask me the Vikes from week 1 to week 2 realized they needed to switch up more passes on first downs, so they did. They needed to involve their TE’s more, so they did (although more is desired) they needed to tackle better, and they did.

Everyone needs to chill, enjoy the football season, and quit looking into 2015. Enjoy the now, not next year. Silly talk

Fred Evans will be cut

As much as many of you may want to see Berrian and Johnson cut, my money is on Fred Evans. He has looked awful on defense, and like Grime said, he was already cut once. K-Will returns, and Evans will go. I agree that it’s frustrating that Johnson missed the INT, but at least he was in position. And Berrian…ugh…he needs to get his head out of his ass and learn to catch a ball. For those wanting Berrian to be cut, you’ll have to wait until the end of the season I’m guessing.

Once again the big problem with Berrian is the same one we have in other areas

We have no one able to play that position better. Aromashadu, DeGeare, Fusco all of our backups are not good enough to start and that is honestly why the people we have issues with are still playing day in and day out. DeGeare was doing so badly that they moved him (who started games) all the way to the practice squad and no teams picked him up off the waiver. I think that means that no one likes what he’s bringing to the table.

Query

I see a lot of anti-luck discussion here, am I wrong or is a “one-in-a-generation” qb not desirable? He is going to struggle during his first year, setting up a second favorable draft. Rebuilding takes a couple of years at least. By this time, we will have replaced basically the whole team, as lets be honest, we dont exactly have a lot of young guys around.

by redhearring on Sep 19, 2011 2:17 PM CDT reply actions

The real querstion is

If they actually got hte #1 pick (I don’t think they’ll be the worst team in the NFL), do you…

1 – Take Luck even with Ponder and Webb on the roster and still need to rebuild the offensive line

OR..

2 – Keep Ponder as your QBOTF and parlay that first pick into the best O-lineman available, or better yet, trade out for multiple picks to rebuild the line and/or other areas?

I gotta believe Ponder would have to be a complete disappointment for the coaches to consider Luck if they had the chance. I’d guess they’d rather use that high pick to build the rest of the team up around Ponder.

Getting Luck might mean having the better of two young prospects (and that’s still not a guarantee, as we’ve seen many ‘sure thing’ busts), but it would still leave them with all the other questions on the o-line, at WR, and certain spots on defense where talent is thin or aging.

I’d be happy for 2 great young linemen and a legit, bit WR to replace Berrian. They have great young skill position talent in Peterson and Harvin, and loads of potential in Ponder and Rudolph. That’s a nice offense for years to come, but they need an above average offensive line to really maximize that potential, and they don’t have that right now.

Charlie Johnson – short term answer
Hutchinson – on the decline
Sullivan – too small, inconsistent
Hererra – might be the best value on the line when he’s healthy
Loadholt – needs to imrove, but he’s still young

Maybe Fusco and Love turn out to be good players at C and G who can upgrade the current starters. They still need a left tackle, and there are 4 or 5 prospects currently being called 1st round talent at that position for the 2012 draft. I’d bet that’s where they start.

by rovibe on Sep 19, 2011 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

If we pick first draft Luck and build the team around him

There are very few Manning’s available in any draft. If the Vikings have one of the top quarterbacks in the league they eventually will get a shot at a superbowl. It might take a few years as it did in Indy, but there are no teams that have had one of the top 2 quarterbacks in the league that didn’t make it to the superbowl. If Luck can become one of the top 2 quarterbacks in the league then Vikings should take him.

by boppitywop on Sep 19, 2011 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

First

Rovibe, depending on Ponder’s performance/bench warming ability we might be able to trade him and grab a new QBOTF. I understand it makes little sense, but if Luck lives up to the hype, its worth it. I like Ponder, but he has less upside than others and could be a pretty decent QB. I’ll take a year or two of suck-y-ness if it gets me a decade of greatness. I think that plan is better than the annual mediocrity this team has made due with in the last 20+ years. Can I coin a new catchphrase? Give me Luck or Give me Death!

This is all hearsay at the moment as I dont think we will preform less than the Bungles, Seahawks, Bills (wait what…2-0!?!?!) or the Packers (a man can dream cant he) and most of the teams who possess that valuable number 1 will likely trade it now that the wage scale is in place.

by redhearring on Sep 19, 2011 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

That's a tough one

Right now, the concensus says Luck has more upside than Ponder, so I’ll go with that.

Fast forward to the draft – Vikings have the worst record and first pick, take Luck…

Now what? Trade Ponder? You’d almost have to just to recoup some of your investment, but how much would anyone pay for him at that point?

1 – most think they overpaid at #12
2 – drafting another QB a year later could make other teams think you’re not high on Ponder
3 – You’d still need a host of high picks to rebuild a quality o-line

They’d be in a tough spot making that decision. But I guess it would be a good problem to have..

Some posts

have already stated what I was thinking all along is to cut Berrian cause he has already restructured his contract for less $$. Put Webb at WR pick a servicable QB in Berrians newly vacant spot. As one poster said he has one more catch than I do… one. Need some guys that are hungry and willing to go fight for the damn BALL, the way Adrian runs. I wish Leslie F would be alittle more animated/excited but that’s probably not going to happen. Enough of the Luck talk… maybe he is that good or not remember Ryan Leaf? If we would end up with the worst record. This season we should find out what we have in Ponder, which I hope he turns out… he has shown some flashes and he’ll learn. and if we have the 1st pick then do what has been posted already trade the pick for a load of picks?!? I’m not writing us off quite yet, never will. bleeding purple. good reading posters
