First thought is damn I wanted Jaymar on the roster!

I’d say that cutting Jaymar means that both Sherels and Camarillo make the 53 because they were the only other guys in the punt return mix. I’m happy that Sherels is more likely to stick but I wish they kept Johnson instead of Cammy’s large salary.

Also the cut of Stylez White probably means that Awasome will get the 9th and final DL spot in my opinion. The other cuts are unsurprising but I thought Tristan Davis might have been good on the practice squad.

I'm not sure but I don't think so.

It’s his fourth year in the league but maybe he has some eligibility left since he hasn’t played or been on the 53 man roster much. I’m leaning towards no but I’d have to look up the rules to find out for sure.

i hope Manny Areneaux makes it

I like what I saw from him in preseason

by RaysOfHope on Sep 2, 2011 9:07 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Wow. Jaymar's gone. Can't believe it.

It means they are keeping Berrian. A double dose of bad news.

Also read an article tonight about Frazier talking about the tough decision about whether to start Sanford or Johnson at safety. The author savaged Johnson about his poor play, but also quoted Johnson in a couple of places. Johnson should never be quoted. He just upsets people who care about the Vikings. Anyway, the long and the short of it is that it appears he’s going to make the team too. I’m so very, very bummed with the way this is shaping up.

by kcskol on Sep 2, 2011 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

Just remember

Frazier gave a strong vote of confidence to Madieu before making him one of the early cuts. If they keep Johnson, I would bet it’s only because they have few options right now. I still expect to see them go safety early in the next draft or free agency period. One of those positions we’ll just have to sit tight on for another year while others get addressed first.

by rovibe on Sep 2, 2011 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I've been disappointed in Frazier a few times now

with the release of Jaymar being the latest. He has loyalty to some players for reasons unknown and seems more willing to try and secure mediocre veterans over youth with potential in order to eek out a couple more wins his first season. This lack of real rebuilding will only hurt us in the long run. T. Johnson should be gone, ditto Berrian, ditto Camarillo.

by bender26 on Sep 2, 2011 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions

But who replaces those guys if you cut them?

I was surprised with Jaymar’s release. But obviously he wasn’t getting the job done and the organization believes that they have better players at his position. Loyalty might be a small part of it, but at the end of the day it’s about production. Just ask McKinnie and Madieu.

"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."

by NMVike on Sep 3, 2011 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I am surprised too

I thought he was our BEST punt returner, and that is an important position on the team (equal to several receptions by a starting WR each game).

He was relatively small as compared to some of the other WRs on the roster, and perhaps his hands and body positioning in traffic does not compare favorably to Camarillo or the others. Maybe management felt the drop-off in punt returning by someone else is not that much. But I saw a huge drop off as compared to Camarillo or Berrian returning punts. Perhpas they think Sherels is the guy to return punts this year

TiggerSr

by TiggerSr on Sep 3, 2011 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

This makes sense

but at the same time you have to ask what else does the player do?

Jaymar is a better returner than Camarillo but he does not play on the coverage teams like Camarillo does. I think a player has to contribute in more than one area unless he is phenomenal like Devin Hester.

Since Jaymar is not great at punt returns he really is just contributes there besides being the 5th or 6th WR.

I think they are looking at long range development in some of the backup spots. A guy like Areceneaux or Iglesias may intrigue the front office more.

by MarkSP18 on Sep 3, 2011 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I am hoping that is the case

I liked watching those guys in preseason.

I think Jaymar showed signs at being very good, if not yet great, at being a PR. But he clearly was never going to crack the starting lineup at WR.

TiggerSr

by TiggerSr on Sep 3, 2011 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Well none of them are producers so they should follow McKinnie and Madieu

I’d replace TJohnson with Sanford, Berrian and Camarillo replaced with top 2 of Jaymar/Arceneaux/Aromashodu/Iglesias/Burton

by bender26 on Sep 3, 2011 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

1 You ought not be upset with our coach for the GM’s decisions.
2 After BB restructured his contract and had good preseason and showing chemistry did you really think he would be cut at this point?

by aceinthecorner on Sep 3, 2011 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Berrian and Camarillo

You can make a case to keep. Both have the ability to contribute this season and in the future. Berrian can be a deep threat for McNabb, depending on whether or not he shows up and Camarillo can be an effective safety net for Ponder in years to come. Your stance on T Johnson is spot on though, the guy’s got nothn.

by Zach_Bodenner on Sep 2, 2011 10:39 PM CDT reply actions

Berrian was supposed to be a deep threat, but he's not.

The TD against the Cowboys is an example of the lack of respect Berrian’s “deep threat” abilities get from opposing teams. The cornerback let him go to a safety who was a little late in getting over. Noone put a safety one-on-one with a deep threat receiver.

It’s the next morning, and I still can’t believe the Vikings let Jaymar go. Maybe this is a sign that the Vikings are really only keeping five WRs. If so, Berrian and Camarillo should still be gone.

by kcskol on Sep 3, 2011 7:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Even when Berrian catches a pass it's by luck

Look at this photo, his hands are nowhere near the ball, eyes are still up in the sky, only by pure luck it hit him right in the chest and he was able to wrap it up. He is terrible! No real speed, no hands, alligator arms, lack of desire, large salary….c’mon.

by bender26 on Sep 3, 2011 7:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I hadn't seen that one.

But I did see the photo of the ball dropping to his thigh. Not exactly a textbook catch.

That picture, right there, should get Berrian released

Seriously. This from an 8 year veteran is beyond inexcusable, and it’s not uncommon for Berrian. I’ve seen balls bounce off his shoulder pads, off his chest, off his stomach. The man has a bad case of TW-Syndrome. Combine that with the fact that he’s no longer fast, and the guy has simply go to go. Even if it means keeping someone who’s evaluated lower than Berrian, at least there’s a chance the other man might improve. Berrian’s on a downward spiral and the Vikings are along for the ride if they depend on him in clutch situations.

Look

I am no fan of Berrian, although I am rooting for him to succeed if he lines up for the Vikes. I am in favor of trading or releasing the guy and keeping other WRs, based on his past performance for the Vikes.

But this pic is not what you guys are making it out to be. It is cropped. What you can’t see is the other safety to Berrian’s immediate right that was blocking his view of the ball 2-3 feet in front of him. Somehow the ball went through the safety’s hands and arms and re-emerged in a flash just as it landed in Berrian’s arms. I think all WRs would be in the same position that Berrian found himself in this pic, from Cris Carter to Troy Williamson. It does not show poort technique, in my view, given what has been masked by the cropping. The bottom line is he caught it. All in all, a great catch by Berrian, NOT evidende that this guy is another Troy Williams.

Y’all are NOT being fair. If Berrian lines up for us this year, we should root for him to play his best — it isn’t THAT bad. Overpaid? Yes. But he can help us win games.

TiggerSr

by TiggerSr on Sep 3, 2011 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Pic not telling the whole story...

For everyone criticizing Berrian because of that pic, did you actually see the play live? And if you did, did you pay attention to the safety? The safety made a damn good play on the ball — thought it was about to get tipped away or even picked as he flew into the play just a hair too late. So when a defender impedes your vision THAT much, you will lose sight of the ball and that makes it much more difficult to make a clean catch. The Berrian hate is excessive IMO.

Me too

he would be a good deep threat for when Berrian pulls a hammy. Unfortunately it’s been reported that Emmanuel Arceneaux was cut and told he will be brought back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

by Zach_Bodenner on Sep 3, 2011 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Would rather have seen Arceneaux or Burton make the team than Sherels. Sherels has played well, but he looks so undersized to be an effective option at corner.

by aceinthecorner on Sep 3, 2011 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Am more looking

At Sherels and Raymond hoping they make the cut and either Frampton or TJ (johnson) lol are cut, also the Oline fusco and Love as well as Olsen looked good fits.
As WR I can see they need a slot guy for Harvin and Cam is pretty good at that as well as finding open spots in zones and setting in them.

by vikefan1969 on Sep 3, 2011 9:40 AM CDT reply actions

Pretty sad to see Farwell go.

But 1.75M is a lot for a special teamer. Especially with the new kickoff rule.

by Purpledork on Sep 3, 2011 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

DANG!

I’m going to miss Dugan. He never added much to the stat column, save that 2 TD year, but as lead blocker, blocking tight end, de facto fullback, special teamer, he filled a LOT of roles.

I also adored his ability to get 7 yards rushing a year regardless of the number of carries. I hope he finds a good home or is the first person called in case one of the TEs goes down.

And I guess this means either Reisner or D’Imperio made the cut. Between this and Farwell they’re saving a little bit of money so the silver lining here is maybe they’ll use it on a S or an OL in the next few days.

Get over not getting rid of berrian

Johnson was a training camp wonder. He never translated to the field, Obvioulsly the coaches seen that johnson wasent worth keeping. As he was no where to be seen in most of the preseason, I kno berrian wasent seen much but he has more experiance than johnson, and remeber 3 years ago he was almost a 1000 yard recivier

by Jordon Meyers on Sep 3, 2011 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

This post almost made me laugh

Johnson had a good preseason despite your impression of that he was nowhere to be seen.

But here’s my favorite part, “I know Berrian wasn’t seen much, but he has more experience than Johnson” and “Remember THREE YEARS AGO he was ALMOST a 1000 yard receiver.” IMO that’s digging pretty deep.

by kcskol on Sep 3, 2011 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Both local paperss said the same thing

That Johnson started out a camp favorite and struggled to keep it up as the preseason went on.

They also suggested the Vikings were not as happey with his receiving skills as his punt return abilities.

by rovibe on Sep 3, 2011 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

But what has Berrian Done for us Lately?!

Oh yes. A TD catch. His first TD in over 2 years. In pre-season. Hooray.

Yep, I’m hatin’ on Berrian. I think he’s a half-assed talent who, as long as he’s in place, gives manage the excuse to not replace him with someone better. They can always come up with excuses to give him more chances, more time.

If he’s gone, then either one of the other WRs steps up, or they go out and get a real #1 WR.

I realize they won't keep Weber over Tebow

But I figured they’d want Weber on their on practice squad — you know Tebow’s days there are numbered.

This time next year, they could be picking between Weber and Quinn. And I’d guess Weber might like to stay in Denver both for the shot at a long term job, and to play with his favorite college receiver. I’ll be surprised if they don’t put him on the ps.

I'm shocked

Say what you want about Ryan Cook, for some reason many fans here can’t seem to grasp the importance of having a guy who can back up all 5 positions on the line. A guy like that is rare, and usually a lock for a roster spot. He’ll get signed somewhere else in a heartbeat jsut for his versatile backup skills.

DeGeare showed promise last year, and looked like a great pickup for a 5th round pick, but supposedly showed up out of shape this year like some other player whose name I can’t remember right now (McStupid)..

Caleb King? Looked good. Nowhere to play him. Surprised they ever went after him at all.

by rovibe on Sep 3, 2011 6:01 PM CDT reply actions

Just a huge whoa on my end...

that Jaymar Johnson went bye-bye (I know it’s already been discussed here- but I’m so personally surprised I wanted to make my own comment). Quite frankly, I find that the biggest shock. I thought he performed well enough as a WR to get the nod- not to mention his apparent return skills. I often here Mark’s claim for ‘no more special team aces’, and while I’m inclined to argue the need for strong special teams (just ask the 2010 Chargers…), I can also agree on the level that special teams WON’T win you games if the offense/ defense isn’t doing the necessary job, and that with only 53 on a roster, you need offensive/ defensive aces FIRST.

That said, I felt JJ could have held up his end of the bargain as a WR on the regular team offense, at least as a #5/6 WR, and also been someone you could count on in the special teams return department. While I’m quite happy to see my boy Cammy made the cut, I also really hope he’s not our return guy again this year… his hands aside, the guy just has no motor afterwards.

New season and a practically new team. Let's go Vikings! Skol! Daily Norseman

It looks pretty bare, behind EJ....

I wonder if they’re thinking of bringing in some outside MLB talent while Brinkley recovers..

Didn’t think Farwell was ready to cut, that’s a surprise. Cook, while he’s not great at any position, I thought would have made it too because of his backup versatility.

And there’s still two guys that I thought needed to go, Berrian and T. Johnson, who are still hanging around.

Ah well, roster’s set, time to get behind them and push :)

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
