Detroit Lions At Minnesota Vikings - Overtime Open Thread
We are going to overtime at the Metrodome, ladies and gentlemen.
After the Vikings scored the first 20 points to go into the locker room with a 20-0 lead, the Lions came back with 23 unanswered points of their own to take a 23-20 lead. The Vikings managed to get into position for a Ryan Longwell field goal from 49 yards out to tie the game at 23. The Vikings may have had a chance at a field goal at the end after forcing the Lions to put, but an unnecessary roughness penalty on Kenny Onatolu on the punt return put the Vikings out of range, and now we have extra football in Minneapolis.
The Lions have won the toss, which means they're going to get the ball first. Can the Vikings stop the Detroit offense and give themselves a shot to win?
Let's hope so. . .otherwise we're going to spend our week talking about a third consecutive huge meltdown.

I'm not mad at all with Ced
I am mad that it wasn’t Chris Cook covering Johnson. Johnson displayed terrific concentration and hands, but Cook had his number twice today in big spots. I realize the one play was zone coverage so he had the ability to read Stafford, but the other play was man-to-man and he came up big.
They even said they drafted Cook to cover Johnson, so why isn’t he on him during overtime?!?!?!? He played big today, and I think he needed to cover him all game.
On another tangent… Can McNabb throw a ball above his wide receivers knees? Our wide receivers cannot get YAC when they need to dive for the ball, or scoop it all game.
Griffin
Is done..guy can’t hang with anyone, he’s lost about 3 steps after blowing out both his knees
He was covering fucking Calvin Johnson

Single coverage is the chance you take..........
with the blitz. Stafford threw it up for grabs, and the TALL receiver went and got it. No safety help available. This is why the blitz is NOT done ALL the time. Not complicated. This team’s corners have played outstanding ball so far.
This team’s problem is offense.

should realize he can’t cover 1-on-1 then? If I, a person who simply watches football and plays armchair QB can see it, why can’t they?

I'll say it again...This team has no heart...There are players on this team that have heart, but as a team, we have no heart...
Tried to warn everyone
I wrote it all over these message boards when they signed McNabb.
The guy has no heart and no guts. He has bad mojo and has a negative effect on the psyche of a team. It will only get worse as he retreats into his self pity party.
This team was never going to win with him at QB. It was a horrible decision to sign him, i dont care what anyone says.
Until he is removed as the starter, this team will continue on a downward spiral.
I've been saying it for over a year.
The Iggles knew what they were doing when they traded D-Mac to a division rival.

Hes doing very little overall, but ZERO in the second half of games in which the team gives up leads every week.
He is a negative on the field when it counts.
I didn't think Berrian made any special effort to catch up to the ball

Yeah....score 28 in the first half
Then we’d be 3-0
Changes
Don’t allow the opposing offense to run/pass at will.
Put in someone besides Berrian
Give AP some touches during the second half….and show some different looks with him…like get him in the flats for a pass
Use Harvin for more than a few plays
get a front offensive line that can block.
discipline the players from making stupid penalties.
Harvin was out in the second half sick to his stomach.
They coaches used Percy brilliantly in the first half, I will give them that. The offense just looks flat without him…
3 weeks,3 games,3 good halftime leads,3 losses at the end
Fire Frazier, let Mike Singletary take over, bench McNabb, let Ponder start, this is just getting out of control
If Childress were coaching
We wouldn’t have had such a huge lead at halftime

Are you kidding?
At least we’re getting 1 half of good football with Frazier.
Whatever
Talk to us when Frazier wins his first game as the official head coach.
At least Childress won some.
Frazier won last year
But Childress never went 0-3.
Childress had some personality unique things but he was an absolute master of the running game. Our running defense and offense were always great under Childress.
I still support Frazier as head coach. I think we need to give him a lot of room this season to grow into the job.
I do wish that fans wouldn’t have been so hateful about Brad Childress. Only Bud Grant took the Vikings to two straight division championships and a conference championship game.

Whining at Chilly for that is patently silly. It was the right move for Chilly at the time and I’m SO glad Moss the human cancer is gone. He sucked.
chilly totally effed that one up. regardless of what you think about moss,
chilly had lost the respect of the players and tried to pull a power move and cut moss without consulting anyone. that was laughable. i’d take moss over chilly any day.

warcraft, you are my guitar hero !!!
Totally agree with you, Medicineball
Chilly did better than fans gave him credit for but imho we still need a better coach. I’m not sure that Frazier is good enough, either – in my experience, coaches who are TOO mellow and confident don’t have the mojo to shake things up when it’s needed, either. :(
too many heartbreaking losses ..

Yeah, Frazier's not looking so hot anymore
I was concerned about him from the get-go and said so on this site, even. Though I have very little remaining confidence in Frazier, I still do think he deserves a couple more years to get his feet set before we start considering dumping him.
Ovearll...
going for it is Frazier’s call, but the play call belongs to musgrave. I am very surprised that he is not getting more blame for this. It was his call to keep berrian, it was his call to run the shotgun on third and one in the third quarter, his call to give it to gerhart. His call not to give adrian the ball, he needs to get his freakin head out of his ass and give adrian the ball, 1 carry in the third quarter is absolutely unacceptable. Frazier is a great defensive coach and you can see it, the secondary has played very well this year, but he really lacks the leadership ability and that x-factor that the great coaches do.
Skol Vikes.
Draft issue
Well, hindsight is 20/20, but I still regret our draft-day trades back in 2010.
We should have drafted Chris Cook 30th overall. The Rams would have taken Jahvid Best. We would have kept our 2nd round pick and taken Amari Spievey or some other player to boost the team.
We wouldn’t have Gerthart and we wouldn’t have to deal with Best.
Because Best was such a beast today..

cutting or gnashing?
part of being a good coach is being able to motivate your players. Another part is making the proper adjustments at halftime….so far, he is doing neither of those. He is also expected to put together the best team he can….with berrian out on the field and charlie johnson, he is not doing that.
He may be a new head coach, but it’s not like he hasn’t been around football for the past 20 plus years. the game day stuff should be second nature.
In his defense...
what halftime adjustments do you suggest when you’re up 17-7, 17-0 and 20-0?
Exactly.....
with a 20-0 lead, it is imperative that the offense keep the foot on the gas, which McNabb is unable to do. You have to play to win, as opposed to playing not to lose. In this, yes, it is on Frazier to remind the team to keep it going. Adjustments are not necessary with a three score lead.
Yeah, but you still need to make adjustments.
Because the other team is making adjustments. You need to be aware of what they may do to adjust to what you are doing and have a counter attack for that. This is not happening.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!!!
I have called for scrapping the Tampa 2 scheme for years now.....
it ALLOWS teams to come back, using the short game, especially when the comeback starts at the beginning of the third quarter. I am sick of the “bend but don’t break” element to it. I want nasty, tough, hardhitting defense, not this. Having to rely on Jared Allen to be the ONLY physical threat is not going to get it done.
run, run, run, run.....2 back sets, eat up the clock, wear down their defense.

he may be a teammate, but he is not a leader. These losses are his, and his alone.
I would like to see more of Gerhart. I predicted he and AP would each have 1000 yards rushing this season, what with all the talk about running, running and more running.
frazier should be the team leader, not a one year rental qb.

Really, McNabb alone?
It’s his fault that we went for a long 4th and 1 instead of taking a field goal? Or that we had a 3rd and 1 after a big gain by Peterson and decided to line up in shotgun?
He’s had some innacurate passes, but come on.. It’s not McNabb.
by REVENGE4KLUWE on Sep 25, 2011 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions
To say the least....
throwing it out of bounds to a wide open Berrian which would have won the game was all on McNabb. Winners MAKE THAT THROW. Favre would have, probably even today.
Yeah, that one throw was bad
But come on. You can’t pin the loss on him because he misses on a deep connection. There was WAY more blame to go on coaches than McNabb. Yes, that would have been a nice play to have, but deep throws like that are low completion anyways. They rarely connect.
And no, Favre wouldn’t have connected because he flat out ignores Berrian, which turns out to be a good thing. Maybe another example of the poor coaching. Cut the extra baggage of Berrian, and let somebody get on the field who will do something. If we’re using him as a deep-threat decoy, it isn’t working.

we should have run a play action roll out to a 5-10 yard route in the flats for a first down, not take a shot at the cone with berrian.

Yeah where IS the play action?
I don’t think I’ve seen it too much.

Looked to me like the throw was to a spot
it landed OOB but if BB was there he had a chance to catch it.
I thought BB took his sweet ass time running the route.
This.
If Berrian was faster, that would have been a catch. Too bad our DEEP THREAT isn’t very fast.

Uhhh, I think you're oversimplifying this
The team isn’t just losing. It is IMPLODING. In the second half. EVERY game we’ve played so far. Most teams that are up 20-0 at halftime tend to coast to victory by the 4th quarter. We somehow end up getting worse and letting teams get back in the game.
by REVENGE4KLUWE on Sep 25, 2011 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Mathematically the season really isn't "over"
I’d say it will be after a few more losses though. Things could still turn around but I definitely share your disgust with McSuck and the pathetic coaching job so far. :(
you think you all have it bad?
I had to go to the braves-bats game with my new fiancé and her sister. Theyre braves fans. Shutout. Then, as we’re leaving the only 2 Lions fans southeast of the State of Michigan begin chanting and cheering when the Lions kicked the winning field goal. An entire 10 minute walk listening to those morons. Yeah- sucked fucking balls!

I'VE GOT IT!!!!!!
Leslie Frazier is trying to readjust us as fans. Don’t you see. Last year we became so accustomed to losing and to instantly reintroduce us to winning would have a bends sort of effect and might literally kill some of the fans. Each week up at half-time he slips some nyquil into the teams drinks at halftime because us winning would send the whole fanbase into shock. Mr. Frazier I would just like to say that we are a strong fanbase and cuould take the adjustment a lot better than most. How about we just let things go next week.
I'm confused by all the Frazier bashing. Do you really want him to make a ton of adjustments when we're up 10, 17, and 20 at halftime?
that is where my logic says we are going
hopefully, maybe, …………OK probably not, but I have to dream………
I don't know though, when a team is rolling like that, why not let them roll.

But they aren't staying on a roll. Something has to change.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!!!
but they weren't really "rolling" the defense was keeping the lions offense off the field.

in game adjustments would be welcomed
there were a lot of common sense calls to make and he didn;t do them. i’m having doubts
"I think they see I'm white and they think I'm slow"
Christian Ponder
Yup
Middle of the field is consistently open for 10 yd pass plays
The adjustment is simple
Don’t wear out in the second half.
With few exceptions (Peterson, Jared Allen, Harvin), most of the Vikings team looks gassed in the second half of games. McNabb was huffing and puffing like after a marathon in the middle of the second quarter. Has he lost it? Yup. The legs are no longer there after about two quarters of football.
Unless the Vikings want to lose EVERY GAME, they need to get in better shape. Right now, most of them are 2nd half PUPs (Physically Unable to Perform). As for McNabb, I’d say it’s time to do like they did in the preseason: Play McNabb in the first half, then Ponder in the second half.
When your team doesn’t fit the profile of a classic winner, then it’s time to build a scheme around what you do have. Musgrave said he would shape a unique offense for the Vikings based on its players. Now’s his chance to do that. The team is rich with running backs, tight ends and trick play hybrid guys like Harvin and Webb. Invent something, Bill Musgrave!
Not gonna happen
We have a reasonably older team – they’re doing as much as they physically can. The offense needs to get FAR better to keep the Defense off the field so they can catch their collective breaths. :(
Are you implying that because Bud Grant came back, Brad Childress might too?

I want to thank you guys.
For your hospitality this past week. I understand this was a real tough loss, and frankly the way it went down it would have been a tough loss for either team, so it’s unfortunate that it had to be you guys. All the respect in the world to your city, your team, and you guys. You fought hard as home underdogs and didn’t take it lying down, I was practically having an apoplexy several times during the game.
So again, thank you guys for being good hosts to us in the week prior to this game. Your team is a lot better than your record, for real. You’ll turn this around, I know it. You deserve it.

Good game, congrats to the Lions and their fans.
Honestly, the game was everything I hoped it would be, EXCEPT the final score went the other way. The luck of a coin toss could have changed that. Thankfully, no one got injured.

For sure.
I admit, I was a little dubious on your defense. I didn’t really like what I saw in the TB game (some sloppy tackling), but I was watching a re-air where they cut all the incompletions and run stuffs out to give the real “meat” of the game. Safe to say, I’m sold, your defense is legit. Just gotta get the offense rolling and you’ll be .500 or better by the bye week.
(Saying this while not knowing when your bye week is, lol.)

Stafford is a legitimate star QB
Matt Stafford weathered the storm in the first half, then came out firing darts in the second. Serious cajones, and his arm is definitely golden. Of course, it’s nice to have guys like Megatron to throw balls to. Who’s got a chance to stop Megatron? Is there a CB named Optimus Prime?
Revis is the only one who has been close to stopping him completely

Minnesota's teams are in a down-swing
Nobody can stay on top forever, and the Lions weren’t going to stay down forever. Since the Vikings are now irrelevant, I think I’ll root for the Lions to compete with the Pack. I can’t wait to see their D-Line when Fairly finally gets healthy. Suh and Fairly will be more dominant than the Williams Wall ever was.
Nice sentiments
But they ring hollow where our team’s capabilities are concerned. Still, congrats to you and your new-look Lions. :)
It's plain. It's simple.
It’s the coaching. Fox reported that the Vikings set the NFL record for consecutive second half meltdowns LAST week against the Bucs. Threepeat meltdowns have never hapened in the NFL before.
Leslie asked us last week to be patient. Well Mr Frazier, when it happens once it’s probably the players. When it happens twice it still could be the players. When it happens three times in a row, it’s the coaching.

The bottom line...
It’s the team. Coaches AND players. The Vikings are playing ‘not to lose’ in the second half.
This is a mental thing right now and is becoming a slippery slope.
Sorry
The players proved today, as they have the last three weeks, that they can put the team in a position to win. Give Belichick our players with three second half leads of 13, 17, and 20 and he wins all three.

Yeah,
Jared Allen did pretty much everything he could to put us in a position to win at the end there. If only Best hadn’t had enough momentum to get out of the endzone.

Let's agree to disagree
The players are not getting the job done. They aren’t scoring and they aren’t stopping the other teams in the 2nd half. The coaches are calling the same plays and aren’t on the field. However, the coaches need to make in-game adjustments to get the players out of their mental funk and that is not happening.
THAT is what they have to overcome
it’s mental. While they are picking up the pace after the lockout
if you have a 20 point lead, how does AP only touch the ball TWICE in the 3rd quarter?
REALLY? REALLY? i am so sick to my stomach I cannot explain it
thats what I'd like to know.
thats what Bradly used to do
"I think they see I'm white and they think I'm slow"

That is either on Musgrave or on McNabb. Either Musgrave didn’t call it right or McNabb changed the calls at the line. Either way it’s dumb.

No, it wasn't the right decision.
You take the points when you can get them. Frazier saw that dolphin’s game last year. We went for TDs instead of FGs and it bit us in the ass, as it often does when you pass up on FGs. Stupid, stupid decision not to kick it.

Near total change in coaching staff
turnover at key positions
lockout and no compensatory mini camps

I’d say they’re doing better than some might expect. Impressive dominance of quality opponents for good lengths of time.
They’ll pick it up.

When they decided to keep BB in training camp,
That’s when I lost respect for this stafl.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!!!
I wouldn't say I lost "respect"
But I started to have misgivings at that point. Serious misgivings. How any coach could think that Berrian was any kind of worthwhile player is beyond me.
Players play people......
hell even Favre made many of us moderately like Childress in 09. McNabb ain’t playing well enough. Ponder or Webb can generate 200 yards of offense, with their arms, legs or a combination of both. I guarantee neither would get less than 39 yards.
he hits percy in stride
or doesn’t over throw BB and we win. He isn’t going to get any more accurate. start ponder
"I think they see I'm white and they think I'm slow"
Christian Ponder
Totally agree
That diving catch that Percy had, if he was hit in stride he could have taken it to the sidelines and to the house for 6. The BB play was all on BB. He had no inclination to speed up for that ball, I’m half convinced he slowed down while it was in the air.
Oh well...
I’ve been getting used to this. I’m not surprised it ended this way.

Ponder Era needs to start now...
How many bounce passes and shoestring catches does it take to see that Mcnabb is NOT a starting caliber NFL QB anymore….?
"Ya just can't fix stupid....."
And Ponder will be better?
Judging off the Preseason, all he does is check downs. And when he throws it deep, he puts too much loft on the ball that lets a defender have time to adjust. You’ll see teams suck up toward the line, and then Peterson won’t even be able to run at all.

Totally agree – time for Ponder to get his chances like all the other rookies. Throw him in and let him swim or sink. At least that way we’ll know if he’s legit or not.
But at least Ponder gives a reciever a chance for yards after catch……McNabb just gets the ball in the general area…
"Ya just can't fix stupid....."
Yes......
the out of bounds pass to a wide open Berrian in the endzone, AT A CRITICAL TIME, was telling.
are you talking about that lame 3rd down call, deep down the right side?
warcraft, you are my guitar hero !!!

Yep......he did not make the play, period.
Now it is getting laughable. One week, the coaching staff is criticized for not opening it up, going downfield. Now the call is terrible when they do, but the QB doesn’t execute. You can’t have it both ways, depending on the situation.
i'm not trying to have anything both ways. it was a lame call in that situation.
and the fact that we even got into that situation is what is so concerning.
3 weeks, 3 first half leads…shut out leads….3 losses.

If we kick a fieldgoal
on 4th and 1, instead of pussing out to an Angry Adrian Peterson, then that play is irrelevant and we’re pretty much celebrating our first victory of the season and excorsizing the monkies on our back about second half collapses

AP can run with 8 men in the box
He proved that with TJ at QB. He looks even more dominant now than his first 3 years on the league. And that would give Ponder a lot of 1 on 1s to judge and some favorable matchups at TE with Shiancoe and Rudolph over the middle, and sidelines. Our TE’s can play, and we need to use them more.
Yeah...
That was with McKinnie and Birk at center. Not this current sorry excuse for an O-line. I don’t think Peterson can do 8 men in the box anymore.
by REVENGE4KLUWE on Sep 25, 2011 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions
that is the major problem here. no time to throw, and no time for routes to develop.
and i think the playcalling leaves a lot to be desired too.
warcraft, you are my guitar hero !!!
Webb or Ponder would get smacked
if the o-line doesn’t hold. Webb might run better in these situations, but it’s a passing league.
I'd take Webb myself
Ponder played too many checkdowns in the preseason for me to be confident he’ll be able to help the offense out. Webb at least throws downfield sometimes. If only we had recievers who would go up and fight for the ball, instead of Berrian.
