Get it all out here.

Alrighty then.

Donovan McNabb might be the worst “aged” QB we’ve ever brought in, and that’s saying alot. What the fuck is our second half defensive gameplan? Is it to allow short passes and easy first downs? Because that shit doesn’t work when the opposing offense is on the ten yard line.

The road to fulfillment in any line of endeavor is always marked by an initial breakthrough; however, that first taste of success needs to be replicated again and again in order for supremacy to be sustained. We are Vikings, and our breakthrough is now. We will get that first down, then get a touchdown. Then we'll kick your ass.

Right. And we brought in the crafty, experienced veteran

the longer mcnabb lasts, the better off webb and ponder will be, imo.

A simple solution that makes me happy and still allows me to be a vikings fan

Expect the vikings to loose, that way when they do loose you aren’t pissed and when they win you are mildly surprised. Either way, i will always be a vikes fan, even with 2nd half meltdowns, the BS penalties, the misuse of the best back in the league and all the other drama around the team.

by muffin man on Sep 25, 2011 6:04 PM CDT reply actions

It's actually even simpler I think

Let McNabb & co. go up 20 pts in the first half, then in the second half start Ponder. I mean, it’s axiomatically impossible for him to do any worse.

Alright, you said "Get it out." Here it goes...

I’m sick and tired of this fucking “team”. Leslie couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag, Musgrave is a dumbass, the offensive line couldn’t block wind, and don’t even get me started on Donovan “Dipshit” McNubb. This is BEYOND mediocrity, this is just downright bullshit. The fans who go to the games deserve more than this. The third goddamn week in a row they blow a decent lead. They better be discussing starting either Webb or Ponder because they wasted a 6th round pick on McDouble. It can’t get much worse than this, folks. Oh wait, it can. As much as I want something different

what will Ponder or Webb bring to the table other than being better at running for their lives? I don’t think that will help much. The truth is, the team is executing the gameplan fairly well. It’s just that the gameplan is atrocious.

Watched the whole game, and picked you guys to win in my pool. What it looked like to me was HORRID second half play calling, and bad defensive play calling.

I don’t understand why McNabb was even passing on 1st or 2nd down early. Why not hand it to Peterson? It’s not like he struggled or something in the first half.

And on defense, it seemed like they went more aggressive which seemed silly. The DL was getting pressure rushing 4. That, and a combo of dropping 7 back into coverage was giving Stafford fits in the first half.

So why start with all the blitzes? I mean, the deep TD Johnson caught was basically given to him. I get they’re apparently confident in Cook, but eventually, Johnson is going to win one of those jump balls. It just seems silly to leave him in single coverage when you’re up by so much. It seems like the you’d wanna force them to dink and dunk to get their scores — which was the strategy in the first half.

Sorry, I know I’m a Packers fan and all but it irked me how the Lions fans all seemed to think they were going to win 40-0 or something.

What was annoying was all the blind homerism. Wasn’t it you that came up with that horrible, faulty logic about “The Chiefs thought their pass rush was better than the Bucs, and it didn’t show”. Now you guys (Vikings fans) are saying your pass rush is better. Will the Cowboys say that too with Ware…blah, blah, blah."? You essentially were trying to say that their pass rush was nothing to worry about, remember? Remember what I told you? I believe you gave up what, 5 sacks right?

Listen, I’m not trying to disrespect your team now, and wasn’t in that thread. I just wanted to be a little realistic. You guys have a good team but I don’t think it’s as good as some of you think (YET).

Raheem Morris, Todd Haley, and Leslie Frazier liked their odds against Calvin one-on-one. Calvin returned the favor with 2 TDs a piece — one for each player that should have been covering him every down.

I'll keep posting it b/c I predicted it

Below is the post I made after the first game, based on thoughts that I and others have had since last year. This team is BAD and needed to be rebuilt over the last year. Instead, management and fans were in denial, thinking this team could "compete". Looks like they were wrong.

The most important parts of the team of the team (IMO) – OLine, QB, and Secondary – need to be COMPLETELY rebuilt, as I have been saying for a year + now. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid and I’ll keep being right.

If you can analyze football, recognize talent, and evaluate honestly, you know this team is a bad team. Period. First half play well, second half play bad, whatever. You lost. And the Vikings will continue to lose. I pasting my post from last week and I’ll keep doing it. Because people (including Vikings ownership and management) need to FACE REALITY. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid and thinking a small adjustment here or there will fix this. Contending for anything ended in January 2010 in the Superdome.

From FIRST week thread (http://www.dailynorseman.com/2011/9/11/2419061/vikings-chargers-fourth-quarter-open-thread)

“Time to wake up to reality
A lot of Viking fans saw this coming a long time ago. This team is on the decline without a doubt. For years big weaknesses have been left unaddressed and the "new" regime (really the same Speilman, Frazier, even Wilfs, etc.) has been in denial. Let’s review:

O-Line: This is the biggest problem and most egregious mistake. Has been in decline ever since AD’s first year. No 1st round picks in 5+ years, no top free agents, just old veterans and denial. It has killed the passing game and weakened the run game greatly.

Defensive Backs: Another huge denial area. No 1st round picks here either, guys like Chris Cook are a joke. Winfield is solid but not a great cover corner and getting old. No one else is even starter worthy, period.

QB: Obviously a huge black hole. McNabb is washed up as I siad months ago while many here were excited about him. What a joke. This team needed to realize it was going NOWHERE this year so why bring in a (washed up) vet? But even worse was REACHING like crazy for a 3rd round talent like Ponder. QB is the most important position, but that means you get the RIGHT guy, not just some guy. Could have taken a great CB, OLine, etc. in the draft. That pick will haunt this franchise for years.

Bottom line is this team needs to blow it all up. What they SHOULD have done this offseason was:

- Draft best available players. For positon, focus on OLine, Dbacks, maybe LBs, and WR

- Trade some aging talent; sad but necessary. Jared Allen, Winfield, Hutchinson, etc. This team needs to get YOUNGER and more talented, mostly through the DRAFT

- Forget McNabb or reaching for Ponder. Should have signed Vince Young. Yes, VY. He is a top 5 talent, with flaws yes, but he would have been cheap and cost zero draft picks. Look at Cam Newton today; the guy has these supposed "character flaws" too (IMO that is closet racism, but I digress) but he, like VY, is a huge talent. You need talent to win, period.

But instead, this team thought it was still a contender. What a joke. 2009 NFC Championship Game. That was the win-or-die moment. Should have rebuilt for the future after that. But it has just been denial, after denial…

Now, maybe this year, the team hits rock bottom. I predict 4-12."

by Ace991 on Sep 25, 2011 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

That’s the thing though, you guys clearly still have talent. You wouldn’t have been to jump out to these leads against 3 legit, good teams if you didn’t. From what I saw today, it seemed like really, really, REALLY poor offensive and defensive adjustments absolutely killed things.

Well Put

Nicely stated sir. I am a Packer fan but I am not here to gloat or talk trash. It is in my opinion that the Vikings blew a GOLDEN opportunity in the initial days after the lockout was lifted. With so many contending teams turning to veterans over young players this season, the Vikings had a golden opportunity to stockpile draft selections for the next two drafts. They have alot of desirable parts, Hutchinson, Allen, Williams, Winfield, Griffin, Kleinsasser(Did I spell it right?), Herrera, Henderson, Shiancoe, etc., that they could have sold off for draft selections. Combine the ones they would get from these trades, and they could have piled up over 30 picks over the next two drafts and build this team on a solid foundation instead of a yearly spending spree. It is in my opinion that free agency is a thing if the 90’s.

I was wrong

I was on board with the Mcnabb signing and now freely admit I was wrong. He’s done – at least as a starter. I see no reason not to start Ponder. Let’s see what he has. I was at the game today and I disagree that the O line is terrible and so does Superstar. I thought it was dumb to go for it on 4th down and even dumber not to use AP.
Also – in terms of visiting teams’ fans, I’ve also thought the Steelers, Giants, and Cowboys had the most obnoxious fans – until today. There were 2 young women wearing Aaron Rodgers jerseys holding up a sign mocking the Vikings and Lions for 0 Super Bowl wins between them. I mean their damn team wasn’t even playing!!! The hurt wrist doesn't explain 1 first down the entire 2nd half until the two-minute warning

There were three 3-and-outs before the series he hurt his wrist I believe. McNabb just can’t put the offense on his back and carry them. He is washed up.

by abba7 on Sep 25, 2011 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Really we only have one problem

For some reason it’s OK with our defensive gameplan to give up 6-yard passing plays.

Those little plays are killing us.

We cannot win in the NFL, ever again, until we decide to contest those. Every other team can “dink and dunk” all day long and score unlimited points.

So let’s get this fixed.

by medicineball on Sep 25, 2011 7:00 PM CDT reply actions

Honestly, I think that's on EJ

He’s a big hitter and great against the run, but the guy is a liability in pass coverage. He seems a step too slow all the time, and so the TEs can just destroy him. Pettigrew had no trouble getting open against him in the second half at all. And it also explains why the middle of the field is always so open for teams.

by medicineball on Sep 25, 2011 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Pretty much, man

We can’t cover the middle of the field. I swear that’s how teams get most of their first downs. Its no secret. That’s why TE’s absolutely demolish us on a regular basis.

by REVENGE4KLUWE on Sep 25, 2011 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

On one of the completions near the goal line he never turned his head around. He’s always had issues in coverage if you ask me. I love the guy’s heart and toughness, but he’s 31 and he’s not getting any faster. I actually think LB might be a bigger issue for this team than DB.

by Siegfried59 on Sep 25, 2011 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

agree 100%

Everyone talks about how our corners and safeties are terrible and, while i agree we definitely need an upgrade at safety, our scheme is definitely weakest in the middle, which requires good LB’s in coverage. Receivers and TE’s over the middle have absolutely killed us in this hellish stretch. Whether or not its EJ not being up to par on pass coverage or the zone is just too soft i don’t know but something needs to change. Because teams don’t need to challenge our CB’s right now, we’re giving them 10 yards on stupid short routes over the middle. On a somewhat unrelated note, Chris Cook really played a decent game, I mean he was targeted 1 on 1 with Calvin Johnson 3 times (that I saw anyway) deep and knocked away 2 of them, that’s pretty dang good.

someone has to get fired up and mean, otherwise we are going to see apathy every second half this year.

We show our hand on defense way too early when blitzing.

Why give the QB and line so long to consider how to pick up LBs?

by Caretaker QB on Sep 25, 2011 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Run the damn ball

Why the F*** are they using Adrian as a decoy? Why are they throwing 3 yard out passes on first down. Why are they handing the ball to Toby on 4th and 1. Why is McNabb still a Viking. Why Why Why Why……

Why can’t this team play in the second half?

Why can’t our linebackers defend a pass?

Why can’t our coaches coach?

Why Why Why Why Why…do I bother to watch anymore.

But I do….

Stop Picking on Gerhart

The guy has carried the ball 6 times this year…………for 54 yards. Hard to show much “bounce” on a 4th and 1 where everyone knows what is coming.

AP had another of his usual games. 78 yards on 17 carries…………..which was really 35 yards on 16 carries and 1 carry for 43 yards. Make no mistake, AP is a great back. But he is getting stuffed a lot. Perhaps the O Line, perhaps AP. We are not going to pick up first downs if we are getting 2 yards on most of our runs. McNabb on 2nd and 8 is not at his best. The offense becopmes far too predictable.

AP also gained just 5 yards on 5 carries in the second half. His second half performance was weak last week as well. Is he tired? Gerhart should see more carries to spell AP a bit and to take the ball out of our QB’s hands.

But the bigger picture is that we need a downfield passing game to have a real offense.

by hoyaparanoia on Sep 25, 2011 7:01 PM CDT reply actions

Its not that we used Gerhart

it’s the situation we used him in. He does need more carries, but in game-on-the-line scenarios it’s foolish not to use Peterson.

The problem is

his big gains almost always get called back by holding penalties

Most running backs are like that, though, even the great ones.

two penalties took off about 30 yards .

ok folks...

no one thought the vikes would go better than 10-6 at best. we have 13 games left. we’ve been in every game to the end. how’d you like to be indy, kc, cincy, etc. with nary a chance. have a drink, relax and realize things are not as dire as they seem. there are very good players on this team and the coaches aren’t going anywhere. the team is healthy and will win it’s share of games this year. if we go 8-8 will everyone complain? that’s what the majority of us thought they’d finish this year anyways. right???

by jcase0 on Sep 25, 2011 7:02 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

Heck, I’m not expecting more than 6-10 so I’m not as perturbed as so many posting in here who apparently drank the kool-aid (to use a tired phrase) for some reason.

We’ve already entered a rebuilding phase, despite anything our clueless coach may claim. Let’s start building for the future.

by Wytefang on Sep 25, 2011 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha 6-10

Honestly, as inept as we look in the second halves, I wouldn’t be surprised if we wind up 0-16 and give the ’08 Lions some company.

You have a fucking 20 point *&%#@$^ lead at half-time

You possess the very best runner in the game. You come out with a with a QB who clearly his best years are behind him. Yet instead about worrying about the clock, you start out with the shittiest 2nd half script of plays I have ever seen in my freakin life. WTF!!!!!! We….. aaaaahhhhhhh!

I’ll give a hat tip to Chris Cook (and I’ve tended to be a Cook skeptic). He gave up some, but that’ll happen when you get island duty on Megatron. He didn’t look like a typical Vikings corner today: He was making athletic plays on the ball, showing awesome awareness of the ball while still keeping coverage, and he seemed to relish the competitive, mano a mano aspect of it… Johnson finished with almost 9 yards per target, but much of that was on the big play in OT with Griffin covering.

Also, I actually thought the o-line did decent in pass protection. McNabb had a little time today.

Same old, same old, though. FOX showed a graphic indicating the Vikings are something like 1 for 10 on third down in second halves this year. That’s it, isn’t it? The offense doesn’t sustain a thing after halftime, and the defense plays 3/4 of the snaps after half. Vicious cycle between stalled offense and not-quite-good-enough defense (+ fatigue).

by jianfu on Sep 25, 2011 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Yep - that's it

OLine was OK today – Chris Cook was also solid for most of the game and seems like he’s getting better at tackling. McNabb offers pretty much nothing right now and is unable to consistently sustain drives in the 2nd half.

by Siegfried59 on Sep 25, 2011 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah that stat

Was pretty telling. We just don’t get going in the 2nd half, period.

by FSUViking on Sep 25, 2011 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Even though the Lions won

Minnesota impressed me today. I really like your d-line, corners, and A.P was a beast. Jared Allen, wow that guy was electric. I’m a big fan of him after that game. Brian Robison was explosive and Greenway made some good plays as well.
I think Minnesota is the best 0-3 team in the league hands down and I believe that Minnesota will finish the season 7-9 or 8-8 ahead of Chicago.

Ponder will be great after he gets the hang of it all. Minnesota is a dangerous team and made a believer outta me. The future is bright in Minnesota.

If this makes you feel any better....

Look at how many games were decided by 3 points or less today.

SEVEN !

(or Eight if Indy game score remains at 10 to 13)

Hi! My name is Winchestertonfieldville.

And I’m a alcoholic Vikings fan.

What’s the difference right..It seems like every game they play, you lose a piece of your soul away.

I'm annoyed that some people are saying "well Cook was decent."

He wasn’t just decent, he was downright impressive and/or GOOD. Well done, Cook.

You played a great game.

Utterly amazing statistic...

the Vikings have trailed for only 6:51 of game time this entire season.

wow…

by jcase0 on Sep 25, 2011 9:18 PM CDT reply actions

Bench McNabb...

… because he is missing a lot of throws. Too many throws. We are getting amazing production from the running game, we should be winning blow out victories if we could just get average passing from McNabb.

The season is probably over. Let’s start the development of Webb and/or Ponder now. Why the hell not? We aren’t very likely to win the division. Watching McNabb, I sometimes throw up a little into my mouth. Good lord, he’s 0-6 in his last 6 starts.

Brilliant.

Probably the most well put post yet. This year has been a double edge sword for me. I can’t decide if I want a shitty season so that we pick up Andrew Luck, or a good season so that we get legislation to get us a new stadium. oh the choices…..

Coaching.

After much contemplation, I have decided the problem with this team is coaching first and then McNabb coming in at a very close second. Coaching is the only way I can explain the second half meltdowns, it’s not like we are trotting a different 53 on the field after half after all. The only difference is, it seems that our opponets, after time with their coach, come out with adjustments, and we come out flat and vanilla. As much as I want to like Fraizer, I think I might have given him too much love when he was hired. It could have just been out of the pure ecstasy of Chilly being gone. But then again, maybe I’m expecting too much, we did have the shortened off season, and we replaced not only the head coach, but our OC, and DC. McNabb is just blah, actually lower than blah. The only connection he seems to have with a Viking is Michael Jenkins. All his other throws leave his recievers making acrobatic catches or it’s so low that the receivers have absolutely no way of making plays. Regardless of all this I am a Vikings fan, here’s to 13-3. SKOL VIKINGS!

The Glass is half full...

This team is oviously competitive…I mean they’re not getting blown out. Well maybe in the second quarter. The first week they lost by 7 points. The second week they lost by 4 points. Today they lost by 3 in OT. People forget that this is a 60 minute game. Every week NFL teams lose a lead that they had obtained from the first half. Give these guy’s a break. Yeah blowing a twenty point lead is not a good thing but look at the Lions, they didnt score the entire first half. If the the lions would have lost there fans would say oh we’ve got to get going in the first half. The playing calling sucks, bench Stafford, the coachs suck, blah, blah, blah…
I tell ya it’s a hell of alot better to work out the kinks in the beggining of the season then to fold up like a Chinese card table at the end of the season. I don’t like to make excuse’s for this team, but if you look at it logically, the Vikings have a new head coach, a new OC and a new quarterback. Our last three opponents all have had their systems in place for a few years and we still gave them a run for their money. The Vikings could easily be 3 and 0 if one or two plays went their way in the forth quarter. I tell you knowing the Vikings this is probably the best case senerio being 0 and 3 at this point. Becuase if they we’re 3 and 0 they would get all cocky and not work as hard to get better. All they have to do is get better in the second half of the game and they can get on to winning, but that first win is important and I bet when this team gets a taste of winning they’ll be a dam good football team. I think the Defense is fantastic. It’s the offense that can’t substain a drive in the second half which puts the defense out on the field without a rest for most of the second half. I don’t care how good your defense is, if your offense goes 3 and out just about everytime they have the ball in the second half your not going to win in this league, hell all the offense had to do to win the game is have one long drive for a touchdown in then second half and they win, simple as that they Don’t need a quarterback change in fact Mcnabb did a good job getting us down field in the last two minutes to tie the game. All signs are that this offense is learning on the job and with the lockout and a whole new offensive system this is what we should expect and in saying that I predict that this offense does get better. They’re not that far from obtaining that as the season progress’s if they’re scoring around 20 points a game now then there’s no reason why they can’t score 30 points a game as they mature as a unit. So keep the frigin faith purple fans we still got 13 games left, were three games out of first place…And to all the other football teams and fans out there 3-0 can easily turn into 3 and 13…Kansas city here we come…
