Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

Because We Must. . .Who Gets Your Game Ball For Week Three?

Well, I mentioned that we are giving out a Game Ball each week, win or lose, so we have to decide who the Vikings' representative will be for this past week's game. Since we can't give the ball to Adrian Peterson every week. . .well, we could, but that would get kind of boring. . .we have some nominees for this week's distinction.

DE Jared Allen - You certainly can't put this collapse on #69's shoulders, that's for sure. Allen had his best game in a while on Sunday against Detroit, picking up three of Minnesota's five sacks of Matthew Stafford. Also, he tried to single-handedly will the Vikings to victory with his play on Detroit's final offensive possession of regulation (where the Lions wound up punting from their own end zone), but it was not to be.

WR Michael Jenkins - Did you know that Michael Jenkins had nine receptions for 88 yards against the Lions on Sunday? Or that five of those nine receptions went for first downs? Or that he's currently leading the Vikings in both receptions (15) and receiving yards (143)? As I've said on a couple of different occasions, Jenkins wasn't the biggest or flashiest signing of this off-season, but he has been very good for this team, and has provided a reliable set of hands for Donovan McNabb's. . .shall we say, erratic. . .passes to travel towards.

CB/PR Marcus Sherels - Sherels played a huge role in the Vikings' last touchdown of the day. . .twice. First, he made an outstanding special teams tackle on Stefan Logan on a 54-yard punt by Chris Kluwe that reversed field position for the Vikings. After Detroit was held to a three-and-out, Sherels took the Lions' punt and ripped off a 53-yard return, and thanks to a face mask penalty against the Lions, Minnesota started at the Detroit 13, converting the drive into a touchdown. Sherels is averaging 13.8 yards per punt return this season, which is pretty damn good.

Those are our three nominees for this week. If anyone would like to nominate anyone else, hit the "other" button and add their name to the comments to see if they get any support.

You have 24 hours to cast your vote, so have at it!

If not for Jared Allen

We the fans deserve the game ball for having our hearts ripping out week after week!

Agreed!

Has to be Allen not only because of his numbers but because of what he does even when he isn’t making big plays he is getting pressure, getting the crowd pumped up, getting the refs to call false starts, putting pressure on the offense even when he is not getting plays that result in him getting stats, making the other team scheme for him etc… etc…

Absolutely

Being at the game, it was easy to tell that Allen had a huge impact outside the numbers – huge part of building up the crowd noise, false start penalty calls, and even defensive motivation were in many ways affected directly by his presence. Spying on the sidelines, you could see him doing his best to keep players motivated to win. He was even talking with Robison about technique. And nearly every play you could see his pressure. At the end, JA nearly won us the game in a safety and Stafford and Best knew it.

I voted for Allen

but think Cook and/or Robison could be up for the vote as well.

by hav_solo on Sep 26, 2011 3:13 PM CDT reply actions

Jared all the way

Sherels also had a screw up with the fair catch at 4 yard line. B Rob might should get an honorable mention.

It should go to us fans

Max Starks

The Vikings had a workout today with Max Starks, the former Steeler who was a good LT, but was cut for being out of shape. Huh?

Total Fail for missing Chris Cook in your list

He had a breakout game, all around. Very good job by him.

by Wytefang on Sep 26, 2011 3:33 PM CDT reply actions

Cook certainly deserves to be on the list

he seemed to be very quiet for much of the game, but he kept Megatron from blowing us away.

Jared

I thought for a second there he was going to pull us a safety when the Lions were smushed into the end zone. I will however give a nod to Sherels who honestly is a play maker in training if that man can catch some int’s he could be my new hero.

We The Fans

The Game Ball goes to We The Fans, for sticking with the Vikings after the worst start in NFL History. Certainly, no player on the team deserves it.

SKOL Vikings!

The wierd part is they have many good and bad records lol

Sherels

Part of the rational is because he seems to make the most out of every opportunity. Despite him not being in very much, he seems to have quite the impact. JA certainly played very well…but I kind of am discounting him because of expectations. We expect JA to put up numbers like this on a weekly basis. Our expectations for JA is high, but it means we are not super impressed when he meets them. Sherels, however, has average expectations and seems to always perform better than those expectations.

by Chris3 on Sep 26, 2011 3:42 PM CDT reply actions

I voted Jenkins

He’s the unsung hero of this offense and one of the only people who can catch what McNabb calls a pass.

by Amrius on Sep 26, 2011 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

After Jared Allen gave it everything he had..

and we still come up short, it’s heartbreaking and demoralizing. I wonder how much he’ll have left against his old team, the Chiefs? Could be another hightlight in the “battle of the losers” next Sunday.

Robison

Allen was all-world today so of course he’s going to be the obvious choice, but I go with Robison because this isn’t really “expected” of him, not this early in the season. He was owning that LT and none of us would have seen that coming, not matter how big of a supporter you are of Robi. That’s my take.

As far as the “supporting cast” votes, I would put Cook up there too. He was burned at the stake this pre-season and even though he’s gotten beat a couple of times, he played Megatron pretty damn well. Rotten egg of the game: EJ’s coverage skills. Don’t know if he was in a zone the entire time or if it was man-man, but Stafford was looking him off of Pettigrew the entire time and Pettigrew was KILLING US. They kept drives alive with him and we couldn’t keep those same drives alive. That’s teh difference in the game.

Skol!

i can't vote for giving out a game ball to anyone after that meltdown.

it was totally pathetic. but i will give honorable mention to jared allen, i saw him yelling at people on the sidelines as well as making some big plays….unfortunately we don’t see that fire from anyone else.

warcraft, you are my guitar hero !!!

Week by week people are stepping up into those leadership roles

Something we’ve been lacking since Favre in ‘09. We’ve had a few people that lead by example(KWill, Toine, AP, Percy) but we have needed a vocal leader for a while.

Skol!

by DM_Purp on Sep 26, 2011 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I picked other

We the fans should get the game ball, for being forced to this teams disgraceful performance in the 2nd half

by mattnmics on Sep 26, 2011 4:43 PM CDT reply actions

gave the nod to Sherels

JA is always wrecking it up on the turf, it’s been very rare for us to have a good punt returner. Tough call, if Sherels had scored on a return it would be a lot easier but I still think he deserves it (punt returning is probably the least enviable job in the nfl)

by Grape Drank on Sep 26, 2011 5:37 PM CDT reply actions

Other: Robinson

He really stepped into the role, took the opportunity and grabbed its balls. The others can learn how do better from him (cough cough BERNARD)

by redhearring on Sep 26, 2011 6:33 PM CDT reply actions

That is disgusting

our LEADING receiver has 143 yards…… tearing it up for a nice 48 yrds a game. You know the other teams have to respect that…………………. /s

  aarrgh

by papaspud on Sep 26, 2011 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

Other - Robison

As an advance on a great season. I did not get to see the 2nd half (my good luck, apparently) but I did get to see his masterful takedown of Stafford. Brilliant!!

If you give a man a match he will be warm for a moment. Set him alight
and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

by Mr. Underfoot on Sep 26, 2011 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

I voted for Allen

But Robison deserves honorable mention. Through 3 games, Robison is vastly outplaying Ray Edwards.

Robison: 2.5 sacks and 7 tackles
Edwards: 3 tackles
