Which College Players Are Future Vikings? Week Four Review and Week 5 Primer

Four weeks into the college football season.

Justin Blackmon is pretty good.  Ryan Broyles, Michael Floyd, Mohammed Sanu, Dwight Jones, & Marvin McNutt are also doing very well.

Brandon Weeden, Robert Griffen III, Nick Foles, and Brock Osweiler are doing very well.  The Vikings will need one other QB next year if they do not resign McNabb which I believe they will not.

There are some running backs doing well but I am not sure the Vikings will even draft one next year.  I think not.

On defense I like what I saw from Markelle Martin and TJ McDonald last week from the safety position. I like Vontaze Burfict, Manti Te'o, Ronnell Lewis, & Audie Cole at the LB spot.  I only watched Derek Wolfe from the DT spot and he did impress.  I hope he is available in the 7th round or as an UDFA.  I think the Vikings will look to replace Evans next year.  But maybe they go free agency there?

Well,  I am going to list some prospects and highlight some that I like as future Vikings and then preview week 5 in the ACC ...

I still like these offensive linemen. I watched Kalil, Martin, Datko, and Zebrie Sanders this week.

Matt Kalil rJR USC 6-6 295 5.05
Riley Reiff rJR Iowa 6-6 300 4.94
Jonathan Martin rJR Stanford 6-6 305 5.29
Andrew Datko SR Florida State 6-6 321 5.23

Tom Bergstrom SR Utah 6-5 315 5.29
Tom Compton rSR South Dakota 6-6 312 5.15
Jeff Adams SR 6-6 305 5.08 *late rounder

I watched the Texas A&M vs Oklahoma State game and I thought Justin Blackmon, Brandon Weeden, Markelle Martin FS, and Jeff Fuller all played well.  I did not pay a lot of attention to Levy Adcock to be honest but I think he did OK considering how well Weeden played.

What players stood out to some of you in the games you watched?

Looking ahead to games this week I am going to move to the ACC.

Please add any performances that you were impressed with and any players that you like for the Vikings after week four?

Here is a quick after week four mock with two compensatory picks and assuming a 5-11 finish (and this is being hopeful) ...

4. Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State 6-1 205 4.54  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjgTeO4aK6s

207. Derek Wolfe DT Cincinnati 6-5 300 5.16

Ok.  In this scenario I could see the Vikings making a trade for Matt Light giving up a conditional 2013 4th or 5th round pick.  Light signed a two year deal with New England and I expect that the Patriots will want to get Nate Solder onto the field as a starter next season for sure.  Plus it is their style to move a player before it is too late (unlike some other teams that will not be mentioned here).  So the Vikings can get a veteran for one more year while they get these two rookie offensive tackles groomed.  Plus they have DeMarcus Love and Patrick Brown too.  I could see this season being the make or break year for Loadholt and thus far he is more on the break side I would say.  Maybe in 2012, if they pull off this trade they can start Light and Hutchinson on the left side and plug in Love or Brown or one of these rookies on the right side.  Sanders may even be able to play left tackle in the NFL.

But Blackmon is the real deal and tough to pass.  He would upgrade the WR position immensely.  Percy in the slot and Jenkins on the other side.  Obviously we need a safety so we have to start taking them and seeing which ones can play.  Tyrell will be a free agent and is probably not going to be asked back.  Sanford is OK but really a liability in pass coverage at this point in time.  Abdullah is all they have.  Maybe Raymond will be ready to go next year.  Frampton could and should be out after this year special teams be damned.  They need a guy who has some potential to eventually start.  I wish they would have kept Colt Anderson and let him be a backup safety and special teams "ace".

We have to continue to add corners as I see that Griffen is just not there yet and is getting beat.  He will be 30 next
November and has had the two major knee surgeries.  Winfield will be 35 too.  So they need another CB to come in and compete.  Maybe Fletcher is a better fit at safety?

I have to bring in some linebackers because EJ will be a free agent and they may not invite him back.  Erin H signed a one year deal too.  So unless Larry Dean, Xavier Adibi, or Tyrone McKenzie can step up they need to get some more LBs in the fold.
