Sanford Wins Starting Safety Spot

http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Notebook_Jamarca_Sanford_earns_starting_job_at_strong_safety090511

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - After a competition that lasted the entire preseason, the Vikings have picked a starting strong safety.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Monday that Jamarca Sanford will start the regular-season opener on Sunday at San Diego. However, that doesn't mean Tyrell Johnson won't see the field.

Frazier said "we're going to end up rotating those guys," adding, "(Sanford will) take the first rotation and we'll let it play out from there."

Sanford and Johnson each started two games in the preseason. Johnson did not help his case in the preseason finale on Thursday night when he dropped what appeared to be a sure interception in the first quarter.

Sanford is the more inexperienced of the two, having started only three games since being a seventh-round choice of the Vikings in 2009. Johnson was a second-round pick in 2008, started seven games as a rookie in place of the injured Madieu Williams and then 17 games, including playoffs, the following season.

Johnson, however, lost his safety job to Husain Abdullah last season and ended up appearing in only seven games. Sanford is definitely the more aggressive of the two and that likely was one reason he has earned the starting nod.

Brinkley returns

Linebacker Jasper Brinkley was back at Winter Park on Monday, walking with the assistance of crutches after having season-ending surgery to repair his right hip labrum. Brinkley also had a brace on the middle of his right thigh as he watched practice.

Brinkley went to Colorado early last week to have arthroscopic surgery, which was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon.

"It definitely needed to be done," said Brinkley, a backup middle linebacker who also was given a chance to compete for the starting job on the weakside. "It wasn't something that you could play through."

This might sound familiar given that wide receiver Sidney Rice underwenthip surgery in Colorado last year and also was a patient of Philippon's.

In that case, Rice had attempted to avoid surgery the entire offseason before he finally decided to undergo the procedure. Brinkley was injured last season but in this case he said he did not know anything was wrong until he arrived at trainingcamp.

"It's one of those things that you don't know until the symptoms start arriving," Brinkley said. " ... It became clear something was wrong with me last week when it got to the point where I couldn't hardly run."

Brinkley, a fifth-round pick in 2009, has no idea when he initially suffered the injury. "That's the thing we're scratching our heads on," he said.

Brinkley always has been an aggressive player who loves to hit but it was clear early in training camp that something was off.

Brinkley in confident he will be ready for the 2012 season, but admits this is a bit tough to take.

"It's devastating to a point but at same time you have to be positive about situations like this," he said. "Things like this happen for a reason. Who knows what might happen in the future."

A cut in pay

Wide receiver Greg Camarillo might have made the 53-man roster in part because he was willing to take a paycut.

Originally due to make $1.7 million this season in the last year of his contract, Camarillo now will make less than $1 million. That will help the Vikings clear more salary-cap space as they look to gain flexibility in that area.

"My salary was too high for the spot I was on the depth chart," said Camarillo, who was acquired last summer from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for cornerback Benny Sapp. "You want to make as much money as possible. But at some point you've got to come to the realization as to what your value is and where you are on the depth chart. I've bounced around a number of teams and I hate doing so. I'm happy to be here."

Camarillo had 20 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown last season after having 105 catches over the previous two years with Miami.

Quick hits

• CB Marcus Sherels is expected to open the season as the Vikings punt returner. Sherels, running back Lorenzo Booker and Camarillo all worked on punt returns after practice but it was Sherels who handled that role throughout much of the preseason.

• DT Letroy Guion said his "wind is up to par" and he has no concerns about taking on an expanded role while DT Kevin Williams serves a two-game suspension. "I really didn't pay attention to what was going to happen with Kevin," Guion said, "but I always prepare myself to be ready when the time comes."

• DE Jared Allen clowned his way through warm-ups wearing a helmet that didn't have a facemask. "I don't think anybody's ever gotten a concussion by just getting hit in the face," Allen joked. "So, just trying something new out, seeing if Coach would agree to it. He said I had to have a facemask

What is Frazier doing here?

Sanford starts. Okay, I get that. But he’s thinking of rotating them? That makes no sense at all. I can’t think of a single type of play in which Tyrell Johnson would be the guy I’d put on the field in place of Sanford; unless of course it’s the useless-safety-decoy play. I’ve never seen that play actually work out though.

Camarillo is a good guy. I like that quote about the cut in pay.

Marcus Sherels is a good CB. I believe that already. I’m a little worried about having him as our punt returner though. I wish Jaymar was on the team.

For all Johnson's faults he is a little stronger in man coverage than Sanford.

Sanford is more aggressive, instinctive, a better tackler, and all around safety than Johnson but he’s a little lost when he’s asked to cover somebody one on one.

Johnson getting better

People can criticize Johnson all they want. They can point to the Texans game where he dropped an easy interception.

The point is, however, that he was at the right spot at the right time on that play with the dropped INT.

He used to never be in teh right spot at the right time.

Now he is able to do that.

That is progress.

I will take progress for any of our secondary understudies (all of them except Winfield and Griff of course).

We need to keep our guys like Tyrell Johnson, Asher Allen, and the rest so that they can develop.

Defensive back is almost the hardest position in football, only following quarterback. It takes either a supremely gifted athlete (Woodson or Ashomgha or Revis) or steady learning. We will only help ourselves by keeping Johnson and Allen and Co. as long as they keep progressing.

Exactly

and never forget that there is a reason he is on defense.

He has no hands!

Relax...he's not rotating the QB's

Defensive player rotate all the time. The Dline rotates constantly. Nickle DB’s rotate in for LBs in obvious passing situtations.
The reality is that neither guy has really separated from the other. Plus Tyrell is a former 2nd rounder while Sanford is a 7th. I can see the coaches wanting to get one last look at Tyrell before they commit one way or another. I honestly don’t mind Sanford in on 1st and 2nd downs and maybe Tyrell on passing downs. Sanford is stout against the run and Tyrell is a little better in coverage at this point.

I think you nailed the probable rotation.

Sanford on early downs and Johnson in obvious passing downs. Kinda like how they rotated Pat Williams in and out based on down and situation.

You know how tired you'd be chasing after WR's for three hours?

I want to vomit just thinking about it. Sometimes you need some fresh legs out there.

Disagree about Tyrell being better on passing downs

Tyrell plays too deep, reacts too slowly and takes bad angles.

by kcskol on Sep 6, 2011 8:29 AM CDT up reply actions

I said a little better in coverage at this point

That opinion is based almost entirely on the fact that Tyrell is taller, faster and has played more in those situations than Sanford has to date. I have been confident in Sanford since day one. I love his aggressive play and he’s the secondary’s second-best tackler without question. He does need to improve his coverage skills. And I think he will, all he needed was the experience.

From what I saw during the pre-season this year...

Sanford closed on the ball very quickly. He was frequently within a step of receivers at the point the ball reached them. When he arrived, he tackled them. That says to me that he’s in the mix and will find his opportunities to disrupt the catch, force fumbles and maybe even get his mitts on the ball for interceptions. When Johnson enters the game, the impact is noticeably negative. He’s generally no closer than two or three steps from receivers when they get the ball, and so he ends up chasing them from behind (either down the field or across the field). He hasn’t become better since 2008, and his impact on the defense shows. Sanford started the game against the Cowboys. Later, while the rest of the 1st squad stayed on the field, Johnson came out to play safety. The drop off in safety support was noticeable, and the Cowboys passing attack improved. I simply don’t believe that Tyrell is a little better at coverage than Sanford. To suggest that he is is to essentially be saying that Sanford absolutely stinks.

Why do you think Frazier sees it so much differently from you?

Because...

…Frazier is always right of course.

As such, I assume you check in with him before posting.

Uhmm no

I was not being sarcastic. I am wondering what Frazier sees in Johnson that so many fans (me included) don’t.

Ah, the "you" part threw me off.

Sorry.

Here’s my theory. Over the past five years, Vikings head coaches have had trouble evaluating the talent of players with the initials TJ. Tarvaris Jackson. Tyrell Johnson. Oh, and Troy Jilliamson.

You're reading way too much into that whole 'rotation' thing

That’s just any head coach’s way of telling the new starter not to get a big head. In this case, he’s simply reminding Sanford that he isn’t a whole hell of a lot better than the guy he’s starting ahead of. He wants both players to stay sharp and keep competing until there’s a clear favorite.

by rovibe on Sep 5, 2011 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Looks like it's not so clear cut

Frazier said Sanford will start but that Johnson will rotate in and they will go from there. Hopefully next year we draft a safety in 1st- 2nd rd that will lock down the spot. I really don’t want Johnson playing at all or even being on the team but I don’t make the decisions.

Everyone wanted Cam cut because of cap

Well there you go. Never could understand the love for Jaymar.

by SouthernNorseman on Sep 5, 2011 6:48 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Love for Jaymar over Cam comes down to speed and youth.

I was big on Cam being cut for salary and being higher on the young guys, but that quote of his in the above post is pure class. Cammy is a team player and maybe his professionalism offsets his lack of physical upside.

by CanadianViking on Sep 5, 2011 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions

True, but when's the last time you heard a pro-athlete say that I'm overpaid for my value to the team.

I get that he didn’t really have a choice in the matter but that’s a professional and self-aware statement. As one of the guys that was all about cutting him I do have to give him credit for handling himself well.

by CanadianViking on Sep 5, 2011 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Personally, I like both Camarillo and Jaymar Johnson

Cammy has proven himself to be a real go-to guy across the middle with his sure hands and a good rotation for Percy.

Johnson may be the fastest man on the roster, I’d rather see him in the #1 slot than Berrian.

Speaking of which, how come they didn’t ask Berrian to take a cut off that 3.7M he’s hauling in?

Ah, ah,

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

Really? He took less than his guarantee?

That doesn’t sound right to me. Are you sure? Can you supply the link to the source?

by kcskol on Sep 7, 2011 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the reason the guarantee is less is because of the restructuring. He likely had a roster bonus due later this year that got scrapped with the restructuring.

Also, not all guaranteed money is guaranteed for both injury and skill. Like I said above, Berrian was likely due a large roster bonus as part of his guarantee but it was probably only guaranteed for injury and not skill so if the Vikings cut him he wouldn’t have collected. I could be wrong, because a lot of these contract details are never released. Spotrac seems to be the most accurate contract and salary cap info I’ve found anywhere so here’s a link to their info on Berrian’s old and newly restructured contract.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/bernard-berrian/

by CanadianViking on Sep 7, 2011 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting.

So what I learned from this is that “guarantee” means something different than I thought it did. Basically, it’s all about the signing bonus.

Berrian isn’t hurting by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s not half as wealthy as I thought he’d be by now.

Thanks for the link. Are player contracts public record? Or is this an NFL knock off of the highly unreliable, self-reported, Dun and Bradstreet stuff.

by kcskol on Sep 7, 2011 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Each contract is different. That's why I posted the actual money Berrian has made. He annoys me much less now that I know he's getting about a third of his original contract : )

ProFootballTalk does a good job of breaking down what’s actually guaranteed in new contracts and what is figures pushed by the agents that aren’t likely to be earned. For example Tom Brady’s last extension with 48.5 million guaranteed is real whereas Mike Vick’s 5 yr. 100 million with 40 million guaranteed is closer to a three year deal with 30 million guaranteed.

As for the public record of NFL contracts, I really don’t know. All I know is that the site I linked for you is the only one I’ve found that has base salary, bonuses, and cap numbers available so it’s much more accurate than say rotoworld.

Neither Sanford nor Johnson.....

has put any separation between them. Maybe a little in season competition can bring out their best, whatever that is. Smart call by what is turning out to be a shrewd head coach.

great take

Yes, give Sanford a shot out there as starter.

by medicineball on Sep 5, 2011 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Camarillo

Now that we’ve got Arceneaux and Burton on the practice squad, I am glad we kept Cammy on the 53 man roster. He is a valuable asset with little upside but he definitely can help us short-term and the Arceneaux and Burton can fill in due to injury or under-performance of the other WR. Loved his quote by the way. Makes me root for him even more…

One NFL scout's opinion on T. Johnson

“Johnson, drafted in the second round in 2008, is a fluid athlete but too often makes the “almost” play by taking a bad angle or not anticipating, the AFC scout said."

seems dead on, to me

Why can’t he change this?

TiggerSr

by TiggerSr on Sep 7, 2011 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Swagger and aggressiveness are what he seems to lack.

He needs to stop playing it safe and gamble on his instincts a little more.
