For the Vikings, our spot is clear; #3 overall. Most likely we end up with either Robert Griffin III (or at least his trade rights) or Matt Kalil. Nice spot to be. I will continue to update this throughout the playoffs and will be unveiling the full likely NFL compensatory picks (including the Vikings') in the coming days.

Now I am not a Viking fan, but the one thing I would consider if I had a voice in the workings of the NFL is to push to have a draft lottery installed. Two things the NBA got right a long time ago- rookie wage scale and the draft lottery.

Don't forget

Derick Rose to chicago, and Cleavland last year.

I think it's evident this year that teams/players don't quit

The NBA draft lottery is the biggest joke in sports. For a team as terrible as the T-Wolves, isn’t it ironic that this year was the first year they have ever drafted higher than 3?

No Minnesotan should ever praise the NBA’s draft lottery system. They’ve been in the lottery most years, been favored several years and have picked no better than three.

by LoveHate on Jan 2, 2012 12:09 PM CST up reply actions

though they kind of deserve it...

they’re the worst organization in all of pro sports IMO.

by DJSkillz on Jan 2, 2012 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

Barring a StL comeback in the last 2 minutes, we've clinched the 3

So what do you guys think if we get to our pick and RG3 and Kalil are on the board: Kalil or trade down to Browns/Redskins/Miami?

by Purpledork on Jan 1, 2012 3:16 PM CST reply actions

+1

but go rams

i do bleed purple, just can not get enough even with a sb win go vikes

by new york viking on Jan 1, 2012 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed...

I don’t see any way that BOTH Kalil and RG3 are there at #3 though; who the hell would the Rams take over those 2? Blackmon? Seriously doubt it. I think we’re in a great “no-brainer” spot. Either take Kalil or take RG3 and trade down (perhaps twice), get a boatload of picks, and get Martin. I still kind of want Kalil most out of those, but I’m fine either way now.

  1. pick sure beats the hell out of the #6 pick.

by DJSkillz on Jan 1, 2012 3:54 PM CST reply actions

yes, but it doesn't matter...

they’d trade down otherwise; there’s no one else worth the #2 pick in the draft; blackmon is really overrated.

personally i still believe in bradford a lot; i think he’ll be a PB qb when he gets some protection, so if i were them i’d invest again in the OL in Kalil; you can always move Saffold to another position along the line. But barring that, they’ll trade their pick IMO.

by DJSkillz on Jan 1, 2012 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

this also locks in our #3 pick for all of the remaining rounds (no tiebreakers)...

so that’s not too shabby either.

As soon as I finish my full NFL compensatory pick breakdown, I’ll have exact spots, but we should end up with, roughly:

#3, #35, #67, #97 (compensatory pick) plus:

  1. in the 4th rd
  2. in the 5th rd
  3. in the 6th rd
    and 3 7th rd picks; ours, a 7th rd compensatory pick, NE’s 7th, and NY’s 7th minus a 7th to Washington

by DJSkillz on Jan 1, 2012 4:00 PM CST reply actions

don't know why it shows up that way...

each of those (1/2/3) are supposed to say “number” 3 pick.

by DJSkillz on Jan 1, 2012 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

we dont have #3 in the 6th

due to the McNabb trade

what do we need in return from WASH to trade down to 7, and who is still available at 7?

Side note, I’m not convinced Claiborne is a top 5 pick, maybe not even top 10. Are scouts sure he is a lock down corner?

by aceinthecorner on Jan 1, 2012 7:57 PM CST reply actions

well, most compare him to patrick peterson...

and that’s a pretty damn good comparison; peterson was the best player in last year’s draft IMO.

but i don’t know; i think i’d trade down to washington and hope martin is there. depends on what they’d give, of course. i think it would take 1/2/3 for me to trade down 4 spots there.

by DJSkillz on Jan 1, 2012 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

They should either take Kalil or be involved in the RGIII Sweep Stakes

The Rams could trade their pick for multiple picks to a team that wants RGIII or take Kalil – I think the Vikings are in the same boat – I don’t see anyone as a lock for the Vikings at no. 3 if Kalil is off the board…unless they want to deal Christian Ponder and take RGIII for themselves. As most stress on here, the OL and DB’s should be the priority.

by KevNW on Jan 2, 2012 3:16 AM CST reply actions

Teams that may be interested in RGIII

I think the Rams and Vikings will be fielding calls from teams interested in RGIII. The most likely teams are the Redskins, Dolphins, and Seahawks. I think you could ask for a 1st and 2nd from the Redskins and Dolphins and a 1st this year and 1st next year from the Seahawks…in three cases you might be able to get additional lower round selections.

What I see thus far in this draft is a definate top three (Luck, Kalil and RGIII). It’s a foregone conclusion that Luck will go number one, if Kalil isn’t selected by the Rams then I think the Vikings take him in a heart beat (or at least should) – if Kalil is gone, and the team doesn’t plan to take RGIII, then let the bidding begin because I think in this draft their doesn’t seem to be much value seperation in who may go at no. 4 and who be there at no.9.

by KevNW on Jan 2, 2012 3:31 AM CST reply actions

this is basically how I see it...

I’m not sure Seattle jumps up because TJack is a proven stopgap solution at this point. I could see a 3-way battle between Browns/Skins/Dolphins for Griffin (2 star driven defacto GM’s in Snyder/Ross, and a team that needs a QB and has ammo—-2 1sts and 2 4ths—in the Browns).

Then I could see a mini-fight for Landry Jones between the losers of that battle as well as maybe Seattle and KC, and potentially even Jacksonville (Gabbert sucks). If Kalil is gone it makes all the sense in the world to either take RG3 (if we believe he’s a gamechanger) or trade down. Because we could probably go back to the 7 range or so and still get one of Martin/Claiborne, both positions of need.

by DJSkillz on Jan 2, 2012 10:58 AM CST up reply actions

Hmmm...

Landry Jones isn’t really a much better pro prospect than Tannehill in my opinion. And I would orchestrate a trade with New England for Ryan Mallett ( a better talent) before overpaying for Jones. You’re right about RG3. He will be a great Pro barring injury.

by chatter on Jan 3, 2012 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, and in a trade with the Redskins...

I’d be tempted to get their 2nd rder and perhaps their #1 next year because they could very well be the worst team in football in 2012.

by DJSkillz on Jan 2, 2012 11:01 AM CST reply actions

Probably not if..

they traded up to get RG3 though.

by VikesFanInTulsa on Jan 2, 2012 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

perhaps not...

I like Griffin (I liken him to Cunningham) but I don’t know.

by DJSkillz on Jan 2, 2012 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

Redskins & Dolphins...

…potential trade partners. Would we still get a top tackle at 8/9? I strongly believe that is the position to take with 1st rd pick.

by PurpleCrush on Jan 2, 2012 2:29 PM CST reply actions

some guys we should look at drafting

Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame (round 2)

later rounds:

Eric Hagg, CB, Nebraska (high character, and big plays, including in 2009 Gator Bowl)

Case Keenum, QB, Houston (so good in college he is worth a look as the possible #3 quarterback)

by medicineball on Jan 2, 2012 6:36 PM CST reply actions

Delano Howell, safety, Stanford, big hitter

Lavasier Tuinei, wide receiver, Oregon

by medicineball on Jan 2, 2012 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

Keenum

at 6-1, he is undersized and he doesn’t have the best delivery. we don’t need another backup Qb. I would rather have Russell Wilson if we’re in the business of drafting backups.
