NFL Week 17 Late Games Open Thread

Well, yours truly isn't quite ready to write about this one yet, folks. So, for now, here is an open thread to discuss the action that is going on right now.

A couple of things still up for grabs, like the AFC West title. The Denver Broncos win the AFC West with a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, but if the Broncos lose and the Oakland Raiders can defeat the San Diego Chargers, the silver and black will be in the post-season.

The AFC North is still up for grabs, and the Baltimore Ravens will win that and a first-round bye with a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. If the Ravens should lose and the Pittsburgh Steelers can beat the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers will get the bye and the AFC North. Oh, and the Bengals would get into the playoffs.

There are a ton of scenarios for the second AFC wild card spot, too (one of which will go to the AFC North runner-up), but I'm not sure what they all are. I'm sure they'll be mentioned numerous times over the course of the next couple of hours. The only one I know for sure is that if the Bengals win, they're in.

Oh, and there's the game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys later on this evening. Winner gets the NFC East title and the #4 seed in the NFC playoffs, while the loser is making tee times at their golf course of choice on Monday morning.

Enjoy the rest of the final weekend of the NFL regular season, ladies and gentlemen.

Good systems go hand in hand with good quarterbacks

Joe Montana needed Walsh’s West Coast Offense innovation, and Young was able to go in and repeat
Brady needs Belichick’s passing attack
Brees needs his middle game route patterns, etc…

That's so ridiculous.

Flynn is going to be the Matt Hasselbeck to Aaron Rodgers. I would assume Flynn is going to find himself the topic of heated trade debates this upcoming offseason, especially from a team who isn’t going to be landing RGIII or Andrew Luck. Chalk GB up for at least another second rounder.

And the rich just get richer.

Unless the Packers feel like franchising him, they aren’t getting jack squat for him.

If they think they can get something for him,

And the Packers go 15-1.

I’m going to work on pretending this NFL season never happened.

Unless the Packers lose the Super Bowl, or don’t even get there. That would be cool.

I think it will be a Patriots - 49er Super Bowl

49er’s advance with better defense over New Orleans.

Packers-Ravens Superbowl

The 49ers are overrated. They have benefitted from a very easy schedule. The Saints are the Packers biggest threat in the NFC. Superbowl prediction : Packers and Ravens.

by vking1 on Jan 1, 2012 4:36 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

you can say the same for the packers

But you play schedule you are given. I don’t think the Niners are that overrated they don’t wow you with offense but, they have something that the packers and saints don’t have and that’s a strong defense. And they do run the ball well. But I still don’t trust Alex smith at all.

It appears though that defenses aren't needed now to win championships

The pack did it last year with much the same defense as they have this year, it may have been a little better last year, but I think their ranking was helped a lot by the lack of good offenses they faced last year. They have been exposed this year.

by bf4mvp on Jan 1, 2012 5:46 PM CST up reply actions

I dunno,

their defense did alot to help them out last year. Aside from the game against the Falcons, the defensive TDs they scored in every other game leading to the SB wound up being the margin of victory. So it wasn’t just their offense last year.

That said, their offense looks better this season than it did last year.. so.. there’s that.

Many teams had their season-best games against us

Partly our fault, partly just bad luck that we played them while they were on hot streaks.

Same thing with previously-unheralded players breaking out against us – equal parts ineptitude and back luck.

Things we know for 2012

The Vikings will probably finish in the cellar again.

They have two players worth keeping. Harvin and Allen.

Musgrave’s system is utterly horrendous and has been called out by three straight game announcers.

At this point I’m willing to audition for the defensive coordinator spot. Can’t be much worse.

I think we have to keep in mind that Webb was not prepared for the full game plan

Considering that he moon lights at WR.

by NMVike on Jan 1, 2012 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

I'll call baloney on that.

He may moonlight at WR, but I don’t think he’s been doing it nearly as much lately, especially after Frazier/Harvin were talking about how special he was as a QB. He likely got second-string reps all week long, there’s no way they’d let Webb go in half-assed knowing that Ponder has been pulled the previous two weeks in a row.

by REVENGE4KLUWE on Jan 1, 2012 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

So why did they run the same dam play over and over once Webb was in at QB?

He was not prepared for the full game plan at QB, thats why.

If that's the case then that's more an indictment on Webb than the coaching staff

No matter how much you deny it, Webb was at least taking half his practice snaps at QB. At this point in the season if he only knows a handful of plays as you stated, what does that say of his football IQ?

The fact that he's learning a new playbook

And 3 positions (counting Blazer package as another position) I’d say his football IQ is pretty high.

It would be one thing if he were simply the #2 QB who could at least get mental reps when not getting actualy reps to learn and grow. But that is not the case at all. He’s bouncing back and forth, game to game, series to series, between QB and WR and Blazer. We’re talking about NFL QB by the way. The hardest position in all professional sports. There’s no denying that.

Yes, Matt Flynn and Aaron Rodgers may both be “products” of the system, but it is a different type of system then what we think of. When we think of products of the system, we think of the Mike Shanahan running game system or one of those colleges with high powered offensive systems such as Houston and Oklahoma State. The Packers system, is the Mike McCarthy QB school. Do you all know what the Mike McCarthy QB school is? We don’t know much about it, but we do know two things. One, it is unlike any other offseason activity that any other team does. Second, we do know of six drills they do. The same six drills, 13 hours a day, X-amount of days in a row. Now nobody knows the kinds of drills they do, but we do know they are unlike any other QB drills out there. So yes, they are both products of the system, but a system that is designed to make them good QB’s who could succeed anywhere.

they were able to change Rodgers' throwing motion from when he was drafted

Maybe they know something the rest of the league doesn’t? Or maybe there team is that good that you can plug in a QB and they succeed?

by TroyW18 on Jan 1, 2012 4:33 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

There have been plenty of QBs plugged into the Packers system

who didn’t succeed – including their 2008 2nd round QB pick, Brian Brohm. Flynn (a 7th round pick that same year) beat him out for the backup spot.

More than anything it seems like they pick smart kids (or in Rodgers’ case, get supremely lucky with a QB falling into their lap) and sit those guys behind a proven starter for a couple years before letting them see any extended action.

Favre also deserves a lot of credit for teaching Rodgers, who is probably teaching Flynn a lot.

It probably means even more stories about Rex

and then the media will be like, “Rex Ryan is all over the headlines!” … um yeah, because you CREATED those headlines by giving him interviews, letting him sound off, and refusing to discuss more worthwhile stories.

Similar thing with Tebow – “it’s Tebowmania!” … but only because you won’t stop reporting about him.

by mg7505 on Jan 1, 2012 4:40 PM CST up reply actions

I think Rex Ryan got so much press in part because he coached in New York*

Ryan is a loudmouth, but everything is amplified in that media market.

Once Rexie is back to being an assistant coach in Seattle or some such place west of the Hudson, we’ll hear a lot less of him.

*Yes, Ryan actually coaches in New Jersey. Or did coach in New Jersey.

So the question now is, for the Vikes...what to do about the QB situation

Which by all appearances, sadly, is still up-in-the-air. Ponder is starting to NOT look like the QB of the future (at all) and Webb, while agile and exciting isn’t either.

Ugh. So…what about this other QB in the draft, the Heismann winner. Should we take that dude?

by Wytefang on Jan 1, 2012 5:51 PM CST reply actions

We've got 2 QBs who might be amazing... or terrible, we don't know.

We have an offensive line we KNOW is terrible. A secondary we KNOW is terrible. A WR Corps that we KNOW is terrible (minus one stud).

There’s no question in my mind that we need much more help in those areas than we do at QB.

by Purpledork on Jan 1, 2012 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think the O-Line is as bad as everyone says...

I think having a couple of real good cover corners and a legitimate deep threat is what we need. Our play calling is the real problem, how many boot-legs do we have to run with Percy out of the backfield? If we shore up the O-Line as everyone is calling for and no good corners in this pass happy league… We will find ourselves falling behind in games and defenses pinning back their ears to rush our QB. There isn’t any O-Line that can defend that. Get a new O-Coord or keep the same one but completely start from scratch with a concept of throw to set up the run.

by From Alabama Vikings Fan on Jan 1, 2012 6:46 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

we run so many bootlegs

Because the oline cant block a 5 step drop pass play. They have to get the QB out of the pocket because staying in the pocket is a death sentence. The Oline is as bad as advertised. The vikings need at least 3 new starters on the oline. LT and both guard spots need to be upgraded.

"At this point, what we got to lose, right? So we might as well throw caution to the wind and hit people in the face."
--Vikings DE Jared Allen

by NMVike on Jan 1, 2012 8:34 PM CST up reply actions

I think we are finding out already - sadly - it's not that much of a mystery.

I think it’s been pretty clear that neither of these QBs is the genuine answer either. Granted they probably deserve another year or two but still…I’m already worried that we’re still needing a REAL QB. :(

by Wytefang on Jan 1, 2012 6:59 PM CST up reply actions

No team

In the history of the NFL has taken QBs in the first round in consecutive drafts. I don’t want the Vikings to be that team.

Besides, that’s just band-aiding a lot of other issues. O line, secondary, WR corps, etc.

by Amrius on Jan 1, 2012 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

I agree that we have other huge issues, no doubt

But I could not care less whether or not we’d be creating some special stat for ourselves by picking another QB. Big deal. OH NO! We’re the 1st team ever to pick a QB back-to-back! Gasp!

Big deal.

by Wytefang on Jan 1, 2012 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

It is a big deal, actually. A very big deal.

For one thing, it shows the FO has no faith in either Ponder or Webb being their guy and I don’t think either of them deserve to be thrown under the bus yet.

Also, taking another QB in the first round excludes us from taking any number of other players in the first that could have a larger, more immediate impact while the QB learns.

by Amrius on Jan 1, 2012 8:04 PM CST up reply actions

The hole the Bucs dug for themselves is a little too deep...

…but Tampa is on the verge of a remarkable comeback. Just not enough time left.

by Midnight Rambler on Jan 1, 2012 5:55 PM CST reply actions

Tebow just lost

Let’s see if Oakland can come back.

by Purpledork on Jan 1, 2012 6:11 PM CST reply actions

Webb is exciting, but I think just like Tebow, if teams take away the run, the passing

isn’t going to beat you. He has a stronger arm than Tebow, but he is not really accurate. He threw a lot of passes that receivers had to make adjustments on that should have been wide open.

Ponder, not sure about him, he was doing the same thing. Not hitting receivers in stride, over or under throwing.

We really do need oline help, so if we had the first pick I would be tempted to take Luck, but since we don’t I think we have to go for the biggest need. Oline, maybe our QB’s would be a little better with a little more time.

by bf4mvp on Jan 1, 2012 6:12 PM CST reply actions

It's impossible to say anything about QBs

behind this line, with this WR corps and this playcalling. That’s not a knock on Webb or Ponder – it just means we have to wait at least until we upgrade in those areas … which may or may not happen during Ponder or Webb’s career.

by mg7505 on Jan 1, 2012 6:20 PM CST up reply actions

I don't (think?) our o-line is as bad as people think

What good is a deep threat if the QB only has two seconds to throw? Our QB’s are running for their life almost every play. The Vikings arguably have the best running back in football with Adrian Peterson. The Vikings have one of the best blocking TE’s with Jimmy Kleinsasser, yet when the Vikings drive down to the one, they attempt to pass for a touchdown. WHY?? Because the O-line isn’t strong enough to punch it in. Next year K-Sauce and probably Hutch will be retiring. Things will get worse. Adrian Peterson is out for the year. In todays game, Gerhart and Ponder both were injured. Webb with his quickness was running for his life. Fix the O-line!!
