NFL Divisional Playoff Saturday Open Thread

Good afternoon there, gang. It's Saturday, and that means we have two Divisional Playoff games for everyone's viewing pleasure this afternoon.

In the opener, set to kick off on FOX at 3:30 PM Central, the New Orleans Saints will travel out west to take on the San Francisco 49ers. Should be an interesting contrast in styles, as New Orleans' high-powered offense takes on what is the best defense in the NFC. Weather doesn't look like it's going to be a factor in this one, with temperatures sitting in the upper 50s/lower 60s and no precipitation to be found.

In the nightcap on CBS at about 7 PM Central time, the Denver Broncos head to Fawxboro to take on the New England Patriots. To recap the coverage leading up to this one, Tebow Brady Tebow Brady Brady Tebow Brady Tebow Tebow Brady Brady Tebow Brady Tebow Tebow Brady. Also, Bill Belichick.

Hopefully we'll get a couple of solid games out of today's match-ups. If you want to talk about them with your fellow Viking fans, feel free to do so right here.

Oh....and GO NINERS!!!

But I need some fantasy points from Brees and Graham. Hope the Niners can get some turnovers and make the Aints look like a bunch of idiots.

My predictions

SF over NO by 3
NE over DE by 14

by liveforadrenaline on Jan 14, 2012 3:23 PM CST reply actions

That NE game is so hard to predict...

I actually picked the Broncos to win just because of their defense but geez…..who knows.

by gerkvoltage on Jan 14, 2012 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, you are right, too!

And it very well could be that Tebow and all his enthusiasm might triumph over the scoring capabilities of NE

my picks for today

Saints over the 49ers
Broncos over the Patriots

Maybe the Saints

Should have protected their running back better.

(Isn’t that the crap we heard about the Saints’ dirty play when they were trying to injure Favre in the ’09 NFCCG? It sounds familiar from somewhere.)

And the 49’ers are definitely controlling the game now

And we’re finally seeing karma catch up to the Saints. This is nice.

I don’t want this to be a blow out. I want the Niners to crush the Saints in the 4th, right when they think they can win.

So....

Is this Christmas? I get fantasy points for Brees to Graham and the Saints will eventually lose? If so…..thank you Santa!!!!!!

Niners offense really needs to step it up

For the 2nd half. If your +4 in turnovers and only 3 points up, there’s something wrong. Defense can’t do everything for you.

Niners better watch it here.

How many intentional groundings has

Drew Brees gotten away w/ now? By my count, he’s had 3.

Good to see that delay of game/time out didn’t bail them out this time too.

by Purpledork on Jan 14, 2012 5:55 PM CST reply actions

The team with the best OFFENSE that can beat GB?
Or the team with the best DEFENSE that can beat GB?

by gerkvoltage on Jan 14, 2012 5:56 PM CST reply actions

Saints won't beat (redacted)

They won’t enjoy their League Approved Status in that game. Let alone they’re a sucky road team that would be playing in bad weather.

by Shawn Gillogly on Jan 14, 2012 5:57 PM CST up reply actions

Niners are a team that travels well.

Playing in the faux-cathedral of football wouldn’t bother them, regardless of conditions.

by Shawn Gillogly on Jan 14, 2012 6:00 PM CST up reply actions

I'm really disappointed with the way the Niners offense is playing

I know they’re a defensive team but you have to do better than 3 yards on 4 plays.

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

No argument.

And honestly, to me it’s the playcalling more than anything.

Except perhaps Crabtree’s drops.

by abba7 on Jan 14, 2012 6:12 PM CST reply actions

Poor play design

They made a play that depends on an illegal pick. Then after running it once and getting flagged, they went right back to the SAME play. That’s on the OC (which I think is Harbaugh still).

by Shawn Gillogly on Jan 14, 2012 6:13 PM CST up reply actions

I'm gonna bet in fact

that is a play legal in college (because that pick gets used on bubble screens all the time). But illegal in the NFL, and Harbaugh didn’t bother to rework it for Pro rules.

Who are Packer fans are saying they would rather have the 49ers win…..what do we say to that?

by gerkvoltage on Jan 14, 2012 6:26 PM CST reply actions

That would be an interesting game

A team that has a great offense and no defense vs a team that has a great defense and no offense.

Saints/Packers would just be a shootout.

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

Or do I have that backwards?

Do you get called if you’re still in the pocket? Or out?

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

the rule is:

Inside the pocket, the ball has to be in the area of a receiver and be an attempt to be a completion.

Outside the pocket, it just has to get past the line of scrimmage.

Two runs by backups, then bring Gore in on 3rd down. Why? He finally starts to run well, and you bench him. STUPID. And so they settle for 3 instead of 7 AGAIN.

by gerkvoltage on Jan 14, 2012 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

316 yards may not be

But 10/21 is. Besides, that’s 1 game. He’s bad.

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

He's not bad.

He just defies conventional wisdom about how the position should be played. And 10/21 when you’re throwing deep balls isn’t bad. Especially w/ multiple drops.

They’re not running a WC offense. You can’t analyze it like one.

by Shawn Gillogly on Jan 14, 2012 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe

But those 3 deep balls that accounted for more than half his yardage were more on the Steelers secondary screwing up than Tebow making great throws.

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

You take what the defense gives you

They were playing 9 men up, daring the deep ball. It wasn’t screwing up, it was being beat when they dared them to throw.

by Shawn Gillogly on Jan 14, 2012 7:51 PM CST up reply actions

Taylor stumbled on one of Thomas' deep runs

If that’s not screwing up, I don’t know what is.

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

That's getting beat 1v1.

It wasn’t the 1st time he got beat. They firmly believed Tebow wouldn’t keep making that pass. But they were wrong. He did everything that was expected of him. Including scoring when they needed it.

by Shawn Gillogly on Jan 14, 2012 7:54 PM CST up reply actions

That's more on the receiver than Tebow

Any QB can, or at least should, get the ball to the receiver in a 1 on 1 and it’s up to the receiver to grab it. Tebow shouldn’t get all the credit but he does.

I will say Tebow himself will be the first person to say that’s wrong. I like him as a person. I just hate him as a player.

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

How many times have you see a wide-open

receiver missed by a QB downfield?

It’s a team game. Tebow rightly deflects praise from him to the team. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve ANY credit when he makes a play either.

by Shawn Gillogly on Jan 14, 2012 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

quick releases, pinpoint precision on the slant/crossing routes, and timing not so important as in WC…

I hate Theists that don't know what they're defending. They've been used to it so long.

It never ceases to amaze me

When other people say that option quarterbacks like Tebow, Vick, Newton, etc. can get you to the big one. There are too many ways to shut them down in the ramped-up emotions of the postseason…

Difference between Tebow and Newton

Newton can actually throw the football.

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 9:49 PM CST up reply actions

Yup

I was completely wrong about Newton. Quite impressive so far.

That's not a duck

That’s an average Tebow pass. It never ceases to amaze me whenever they show a slow-mo of Tebow’s passes in the air how much it wobbles. Tebow can’t throw spirals.

Even with this loss

Tebow and the endorsements he’ll be getting in the off season is going to be astronomical.

No late hit huh

Gronkowski was already down when the last Bronco hit him

by Amrius on Jan 14, 2012 9:45 PM CST reply actions

Gronkowski again

I swear, there is nobody in the NFL that can cover that guy. Nobody. Cornerback, safety, linebacker, or otherwise.

The play design is infinitely superior, though, to start with

They don’t run the slant routes and hook routes of the primitive West Coast offense like we’ve been trying to do for the last 6 years… almost all of what they run is a downfield straight route…

I wasn't aware

LT got into the hall of fame. I thought he had to retire first.

Yea

One of the announcers referred to him as being in the hall of fame.

Are you sure they didn't mean Lawrence Taylor?

Pretty sure

They said his name, not LT. At least, I heard Tomlinson
