The Whole SOPA Rigamarole And How It Affects The Daily Norseman

By now, you've surely seen something about and/or been impacted by the protests against SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act). If you're not sure what I'm talking about, go ahead and try to hit up Wikipedia. I'll wait.

...

See?

Vox Media, the parent company of SB Nation, and SB Nation themselves have taken a stance against SOPA, as have I. In an effort to keep this out of the political realm as much as possible and focus on what it means for us here, there is something that we are going to be implementing as a result of this.

On game days, we usually have folks that are looking for a stream to the Vikings games that are available through the internet. Such streams are illegal, as they violate all sorts of copyright laws and things of that nature. Hence, going forward, this is the policy on linking to non-league endorsed streams of NFL games.

If you post a stream to a copyrighted broadcast on this site and I see it, it will be deleted and you will be warned. If you re-post said stream or post another stream, it will be deleted and you will be banned.

We here at DN have an obligation to police our little corner of the internet. . .and, quite frankly, I think you folks would rather have us cleaning it up than having some sort of outside entity cleaning it up for us. I know that I damn sure would.

We've been pretty lax on this sort of thing during the time this site has been up and running. Starting next season. . .and even with broadcasts of the NFL Draft or the Combine or things of that nature. . .that will no longer be the case.

So, there you go. No more streams. Not debatable, not negotiable. Yes, I realize that this is going to disappoint a lot of people, but we have to do what we have to do.

SOPA is an internet-killer

From what little I’ve gathered about the proposed legislation, the details of SOPA include provisions to punish anybody for the slightest violation of any copyright.

My very own face, which bears a tragic resemblance to a notable muppet, might land me in legal jeopardy.

I would also suggest

Anyone who is against SOPA/PIPA to go to the google home page and click on the black bar to sign a petition against this bill

"You can write articles and do whatever you want, you can break down every player. Good, bad or ugly. But we just aren't good enough as a team, as a group. Offensively, defensively and special teams, from the No. 1 on the roster to the last man on the roster. We just aren't good enough. It's as simple as that." - Chad Greenway

As long as they're legal streams

Then that’s fine. (-:

Crying Packer fans don’t violate copyright, to my knowledge.

True.

3/4 of the crap on youtube is a copyright violation. It’s just more “accepted” these days. Apparentely they haven’t had Metallica slamming lawsuits down their throats yet.

It's pretty hard to enforce copyright anymore when anything and everything is immediately in the public domain.

I don’t know much about SOPA but I think it’s going to be pretty much impossible to stop copyright violation over the internet. The Genie’s out of the bottle and it ain’t going back in : )

SOPA is a problem

And it will limit things to a lesser or greater degree. However, places around the world are already dealing with items like this and as always once one wall goes up someone builds a better ladder. In Berlin the hacker conference that goes on there (one of the better ones you should go if you are in the area) has come up with a prospectus to build a DIY internet. Yeah I can see the eye rolls and head shakes however HAM satellites are already up in the air and in use, and are usable by this organization. They are working on three ground relay stations and seems to be garnering some interest. The speeds would be slow (think 90’s BBS’s) but from a grain sprouts the wheat from the wheat comes a plethora of more grain. It’s a beginning.

Anyway, hope I don’t step on toes with this.

The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.

Bummer for the out of towners

But it’s better than the alternative “Big Brother” style crap we’d have to deal with if these pass.

Too bad Fox or NBC or CBS don't have those streaming legally on their websites

Some people are so stupid. I would rather watch the game at home, even from my computer, than I would going to the bar down the street. All this big $$ in these companies and they can’t figure that out? Oh, the NFL won’t allow them? I see. Never mind.

NBC did have streaming

All the Sunday night games and playoff games broadcast by NBC were also available via live stream. It was pretty slick, too, with HD resolution and multiple camera angles you could choose from. I wish FOX, CBS, and ESPN would do the same.

Hey guys

I know that times are tough and it’s likely that every last one of us here on the DN have to watch our budgets. I’m in no way advertising for DirectTV by saying this, but if you don’t happen to have it – wait a couple of months before football season starts (or baseball if you are a big fan) because DirectTV will without a doubt offer a package that will include the free NFL package for a season. It is totally worth it! You can follow along with the game threads in “real time” as opposed to the delay that you incur with an illegal stream, and you also get Red Zone (which I enjoy) and such. If this is hard on your budget then simply drop it after the season. I’m not sure how much this package costs during the second season, but I’m paying it whatever it is. 16 (and hopefully more) Vikings games is worth it to me, but either way it’s better follow a budget that fit you and your family the best, although I am very pleased with this service. You might feel differently and if you do, that’s fine. Whatever works.

what happens if your HOA won't allow sattelite dishes?!

whatever, I’ll start a blog from a north korean web server farm and we can put links on there. :D

If the HOA doesn't allow it

put one up anyway. Then put up a flagpole, fly Old Glory, and when they tell you to take it down, call the press and watch everyone flip out that they’re making you take the flag down. They won’t even notice the satellite dish.

Or, get enough people together to get the rules changed. Or run for President of the HOA and arbitrarily change the rule once you’re elected. Absolute power corrupting absolutely, and all that. :)

I specifically didn’t move into a couple places because there was a HOA. Man, I really don’t like those things.

No need to call press actually...

Check your laws to confirm this but I have been told that no aptmt/housing complex laws in the US can stop you from installing a dish. It will certainly rub the management the wrong way, but if you dont care about that, you should be good to go. Ask your dish company and they will help you. Their bread depends on it.

by izziefans on Jan 19, 2012 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

DirectTV also streams games

You could conceivably buy the NFL package through DirectTV and just stream the games, without putting up the dish. Obviously this isn’t an ideal solution, since you’d be wasting a lot of money on content that you wouldn’t get without a dish, but you CAN stream all the NFL games through the DTV website if you have the package.

by JJL on Jan 19, 2012 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

Is subscribing to DirectTV in the U.S. the only way to get Sunday Ticket.

I don’t think DirectTV is available legally in Canada but all of our cable companies offer Sunday Ticket as part of a monthly sports pak or by itself. I’m kind of surprised that you’re forced to get their dish to obtain their programming in the U.S.
