Early Cumulative Draft Rankings: 2012 Top 10

So, the 2011 NFL season is almost over, and it has been over for our beloved Vikings for almost 3 weeks now. With the January 15th deadline to declare for the NFL Draft behind us, there has been a lot of early speculation about what the Vikings should do with their #3 draft pick. Here are DN, we’ve had lots of lively discussions already about potential draft day scenarios. So, after scouring the internet for various draft rankings, I decided to average all of these early rankings into a cumulative draft ranking to see what kind of consensus (if any) there was about the top 10 draft rankings. Check them out after the jump.

Conclusion
What is interesting to me, is that the first 8 names on the list are consensus top 10 guys. That's a lot of consensus. I also find it interesting that Andrew Luck and Matt Kalil are #1 and #2 respectively for every single ranking. Are both guys really that much better than everyone else? Keep in mind, this is an early ranking and we haven’t had the scouting combine, pro days, or individual workouts yet, so most rankings are based on college career stats, and film study at this point. Heck, the Senior Bowl is still over a week away. So, after seeing this early cumulative ranking, who should the Vikings draft at #3? Well, if they followed this ranking religiously, they would select Morris Claiborne, CB out of LSU. I can’t say that I would be terribly upset with that pick, especially if Matt Kalil is already off the board. That said, like many of you here, I think we could easily trade down a few spots to acquire a pick or two, and have a very good shot at guys like Riley Reiff, Jonathan Martin or even Justin Blackmon. It’s way too early to tell if these rankings will hold up over the next few months, but I am definitely going to revisit this ranking after the combine to see how they change. Players will continue to rise and fall on various rankings all the way up until draft day. But either way, we're in a really good position to load the roster with talent.

No problem.

Should be interesting to see how these rankings change after pro-days and the combine happen.

I think we should draft...

RG3, just so we could force a trading frenzy with whomever wants him. it would shock the world that we took him, and shock some team into giving us the world, (walker) in future picks for him. we could have him traded by the 5th pick at worst….

This is the new world of the NFL draft…. draft, then trade….

And if no team takes the bait

we’re stuck with drafting a QB two straight years in a row.

I voted for Reiff

I think LT is by far our biggest need, we will not pick up a franchise left tackle in later rounds or in free agency.

I believe by the time the combine is over

Jonathan Martin will be the #2 OT in the draft.

Agreed.

He was a beast in the Fiesta Bowl, and being from Iowa, I watched Reiff get pushed around by Frank Alexander from OU in the Insight bowl.

Personally I don't watch college football

But I have heard that sentiment from quite a few people

"You can write articles and do whatever you want, you can break down every player. Good, bad or ugly. But we just aren't good enough as a team, as a group. Offensively, defensively and special teams, from the No. 1 on the roster to the last man on the roster. We just aren't good enough. It's as simple as that." - Chad Greenway

by Grape Drank on Jan 18, 2012 11:21 PM CST up reply actions

i think just the opposite

Reiff was the consensus #3 OT for a long time, and now he’s finally breaking through.

after the combine, i think Reiff will be the clear-cut #2, and will actually close the gap on Kalil (yes, i said it).

Thats cool

I have no problem with differing opinions. But having watched both players, on the national stage, clearly Martin is more technically sound than Reiff. In Reiff’s defense, he started out as a DE, then was moved to TE and finally ended up at OT, so presumably he has a high ceiling. But Martin has been performing at a high level consistently for a few years now. Martin is more polished and ready to start on day one than Reiff is.

i think they're both Day 1 starters...

…personally, though, Reiff seems to be more “complete” in both run support and pass protection.

this is a debatable point, but i think Martin benefited from Luck’s quick release (as Charlie Johnson did in Indy with Manning’s quick release).

by rj-b on Jan 19, 2012 11:01 AM CST up reply actions

Stanford is a run first team

And they run a lot of play action and roll out/bootleg type plays. They also do a lot of unbalanced line stuff so Martin has exerience in doing it all, and he can do it all very well.

I saw Reiff get completely worked vs Oklahoma. Including by one of the Sooner’s reserve defensive linemen.

i never said Martin wasn't a superior run blocker

i pointed out his pass protection might be overrated due to Luck’s quick release.

and it isn’t prudent to chalk up a player based on one game, whether that game is good or bad (which every player ultimately has).

by rj-b on Jan 19, 2012 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

I never mentioned run blocking

I said they run play action, as in play action pass plays, and roll out/bootleg pass plays.

Youre absolutely right about using one game as a barometer. But, not only did Reiff get beat frequently, he demonstrated poor technique, e.g. poor footwork and poor hand placement. Conversely, Martin showed sound technique in Stanford’s BSC game. Technique is something that won’t change from game to game. It takes years to develop technique. What will change from game to game is effectiveness. Reiff may have gotten away with poor technique vs inferior opponents, but vs NFL caliber rushers, such as Oklahoma’s Frank Alexander, he clearly struggled.

by NMVike on Jan 19, 2012 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

i misunderstood, you mentioned them as a run-first team

i thought you were implying Martin has good run-blocking skills (which he does). i have read Martin needs to polish his footwork, but other than that he sounds good. i am still hesitant on his pass protection for the reason i stated, though.

as for Reiff, he absolutely has things to work on, but his ceiling is high, IMHO.

by rj-b on Jan 19, 2012 4:40 PM CST up reply actions

my bad, I see what you mean

Well it’s two comments based on 2 things you argued. One, you said that Martin benefits from Luck, I think every Stanford player did so you do have a point. I was trying to say that Stanford is a run first team, so many of their pass plays are play action and rollout/bootleg passes, which typically are longer developing plays, forcing the linemen to sell a run block, then pass block longer than on a regular 3 or 5 step drop pass play.

Then you said that you never doubted Martin’s run blocking, so I thought you read “they run play action” and thought I meant running plays.

Either way, both Martin and Reiff will be taken in the first round. If we miss out on Kalil and we decide we are going to trade down, Martin and Reiff will be a nice consulation if it also means an additional 1st or 2nd round pick. I just happen to currently favor Martin over Reiff. It’s still early…

--Vikings DE Jared Allen

by NMVike on Jan 19, 2012 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

and that's a valid point:
It’s still early…

i think i favor Reiff since i saw him play a lot this season. the combine and pro day results could sway me.

when it comes down to it, though, i really don’t care so long as we end up with one of the top three: Kalil/Martin/Reiff.

i’m finalizing my first mock, and i’d love to have an extra 2nd rd pick in there somewhere. trading down out of #3 is the easiest way to get that, but the more i think about it, the Rams are probably going to have that already taken care of. the whole cutting Jason Smith thing isn’t finalized, and they could probably be just as happy with Martin/Reiff + more picks as they would be with Kalil.

i was on the train of “trade down regardless”, but if Kalil falls to us, i’m easing into the no-brainer mentality.

I was replying to CC's conclusion

He stated that the top 8 names were concensus top 10 on all 7 sites that he reviewed. I was simply pointing out that Reiff was rated #13 overall by walterfootball and Coples was rated outside of the top 10 by two of the five sites, therefore those two players were not consensus top 10.

You're right

I worded it incorrectly. I should have said, “The top 8 names are the only ones that average out as consensus top 10.” The average ranking of Martin and DeCastro falls out of the top 10. But yes, if you’re going strictly by “consensus” then only the top 6 fit the bill. Looking at the average though, Riley Reiff and Quinton Coples slide up into the top 10.

Cool job be interesting to see how many take a dip at the combine.

It always amazes me how much the combine means to the draft. Anyway I’m for BPA if we don’t trade. Pick the best player left and know you got someone who could be very special, and not in the short bus kind of way…

The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.

One other suggestion CC

It looks like the chart has the players listed by their rankings on CBSsports. Could you list them in your chart by their overall average? In other words:

No. 1 Luck
No. 2 Kalil
No. 3 Claiborne
No. 4 Richardson
No. 5 RG3
No. 6 Blackmon
No. 7 Reiff
No. 8 Coples
No. 9 Martin
No. 10 DeCastro
No. 11 Kirkpatrick
No. 12 Kuechly
No. 13 Still
No. 14 Floyd
No. 15 Barron

I could

When I started making the table, since I went to CBS first, that’s the order I went with for names. I just added names to the table as each ranking included other players that CBS, etc didn’t have in their top 10s. It’s a formatting issue, I can certainly change it if you want me to. The important list is the Top 10 above the table though.

Question for all

Are there any obvious websites I missed for the player rankings? I hoped I hit most of the big ones, and a few lesser known ones in order to get a good smattering of opinions. It’s mostly a list of the websites that merely showed up first in a simple google search. I noticed that rj-b mentioned “Draft Nasty” as another source, and I didn’t run across them. Any others I absolutely SHOULD add to the list, or any on there that I should take off?

10 is a good even number

If you can find Todd McShay, that would be good to counter Mel Kiper. Mike Mayock usually gets into all this. The SBNation’s site Mocking the draft is another good resource.

I'm lucky because I don't get a ton of ESPN coverage here so I miss most of their hype and rely on Mayock, websites, and a few magazines.

I’ll definitely agree with you on Mayock being the best as well. I love the fact that he’s actually got strong opinions on players rated #1 all the way down to those that are UDFA talent level. It seems like he approaches the Draft like a real GM would rather than the other guys that have ratings and self-promotion in mind.

If I could get McShay’s I would, but nobody has reposted it yet.
