What is the worst way to lose a Championship game?

After the close games this weekend I began reminiscing about some of the Vikings finest moments in the championship games in the past several years. I began to wonder what the worst way to lose a Championship game was....While the Vikings have gotten losing the NFC Championship game down to a science the Ravens and Niners have found some ways to lose their own big games. Although the Ravens were a bit unoriginal in their method, come on Ravens we invented the "Kicker in Purple Misses a Chipshot to lose" method....Copycats....

Anyways let me know what you guys find the worst way to lose the big game.

Missing the kick.

Interceptions happen regularly.

Kicks under 45 are supposed to be automatic.

Fumbling in OT hurts but then once again, it still comes down a kicker doing his job again.

But throwing an interception when all was needed was to tuck and run to get within FG range?

I feel there is a big difference between a stupid mistake and a failed FG kick.

Where the hell was that kicker anyway?

Anyone else notice the ravens totally screwed themselves with the clock on that last play? The kicker was literally running on the field with the play clock at 10 seconds. I thought to myself, where the hell was that guy, in line at the concession stand? He had to rush his steps just to get the ball snapped in time. And baltimore had a TO left that they should have used.

Yeah, absolutely terrible clock management.

I don’t know how they managed to mess that one up.

Interesting

But regardless, Harbaugh could have called a time out.

6th option - worst way to lose the game

was the Ravens receiver not getting solid possession of the football on a potential game winning TD pass. Instead of a game being decided by yards, it was a game decided by split seconds. Catching that ball for a touch longer would have sent the Patriots home in a decisive manner. A bitter ending for many Raven’s fans with so many what if and could if ponderifications (not sure if that’s a word)

Vikings in 2012 will be a Wonder-ful year. Seriously!!

41-years a fan

and the missed field goal was by far the worse for me. I’m not going to try to justify or rationalize. After that game the image of Anderson’s ball sailing wide left has haunted me forever. It kept me awake for two months, and I still see it. Maybe that pain has tempered me against the subsequent disappointments.

It was even worse than the Super Bowl losses for me, because back in those days I always took it for granted that we would be back.

Easily the worst way to lose a championship game...

…is when a referee makes up a pass interference call when none exists… following a very bad spotting of the ball for a 1st down when none should have been awarded… following a game in which the refs had pretty much swallowed their whistles for the sake of the home team.

THAT is easily the worst way to lose a championship game.

Losing to the Pack

I would say that would be the worst way to lose ever.

May God save me from ever seeing it happen.

The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.

41 dick was by far the worst!

That was embarrassing.

Missing the field goal is not even the reason they lost in 1998 although many people want to point to that as the reason.

Robert Griffith has an interception right in his hands and dropped it.

Or how about Green deciding to throw a pass right before the field goal instead of just centering the ball right in the middle of the hash marks and forcing Atlanta to use their last time out or let the clock run down to the 2:00 minute warning (18 seconds would have went off the clock). The Vikings had run two straight basic running plays right before Green (or Billick) decided to throw a pass on 3rd down. Atlanta used two timeouts too. Then the geniuses threw a pass which was incomplete and had to hurry the field goal team out onto the field. If they would have made them use a timeout then they could have taken their time on that field goal attempt. And to top it all off, the Atlanta QB (Chandler) got hurt on the drive to tie the game and luckily had a timeout to use. If they did not have any timeouts I believe it would have been a run off.

Gary Anderson is not the reason that game was lost IMHO. Plenty of other players have just a big of a hand in that one.

The 41 zip blowout was the worst to me.

by MarkSP18 on Jan 23, 2012 6:19 PM CST reply actions

I'm with ya on that one

That 41-0 blowout was so hard to watch, after having such a prolific offense with so much talent and to be beat down that way was humiliating and embarrassing. Losing by a field goal wasn’t as bad because we still had a chance.

by nmvikesfan on Jan 23, 2012 9:18 PM CST up reply actions

it hurts more to lose a close game though imo

the 41-0 game was over before halftime. 1998 broke my heart. 2009 broke my spirit. 2000 is a distant memory.

Moss dropped a TD pass in that game too

RIght in his hands. Anderson (or was it Andersen? I forget) was not the reason they lost. Conservative play calling, injuries on defense and missed opportunities is why they lost. Crap like that and they would have got the snot beat out of them by Denver in the big dance. Anderson actually saved us the distinction of being the only team NOT to lose 5 super bowls IMO.

I agree that Anderson wasn't to blame for that loss.

I don’t think it’s a matter of what is the worst way to lose. It really comes down to which actual experience disappoints us the most. For me that was ’98 after we steamrolled through the season with “the freak”, Carter, Robert Smith and Randall… 15-1. I just knew we were going to the Super Bowl. To fall so flat in the second half of that game was my biggest disappointment, which culmnated in the miss on the one play that would have sealed it.

The following year we weren’t even favored against NY, and the game was over by halftime. I don’t know, that just didn’t punch me in the gut like the year before.

They both hurt about the same at the time

But In hindsight, 2009 was worse for me. The 09 team would have won the Super Bowl. The 1998 team wouldn’t have.

The '98 team would have had as much chance of winning as the '09 team.

I agree that in ’09 we had a better all-around team, but our secondary was suspect. New Orleans needed that onside kick to really get the momentum. I know Favre would have found a way to play but his ankle would have been hamburger…

In ’98 from about the middle of the season it looked like Minnesota and Denver were the favorites to meet. Denver had Terrel Davis lighting it up but we had Moss. No way can you dismiss our chances because of the soft D. We had the most prolific offense in the history of the league up to that time. I liked our chances.

Ultimately, there just isn’t any good way to lose a conference championship game.

by Jshore on Jan 24, 2012 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

Should have put IMO

But there were a few defensive players who were hurt in the 98 NFC, specifically MLB Ed McDaniel, who wouldn’t have played in the Super Bowl. In my opinion, Denver was the best all around team during the 1998 season. They started the year 13-0. They were defending super bowl champs. They routed the same falcons team that beat us at home. The super bowl was also played on grass, which has not been kind to the Vikings for a long, long time.

Youre right though, Favre might not have been able to be effective either. And obviously Ced wouldn’t have played. Perhaps its best that they lost both games, otherwise they might be 0-6 in super bowls. I still think they would have had a better chance against the Colts in 09 than the broncos in 1998.

Bad way to start the morning

One thing I’ll never forget is just how shamefully conservative the Vikes played in the ‘98 NFC Championship game. I couldn’t believe it then and I can’t believe it now.

I actually loved Denny Green as a head coach. I hated Denny Green as a ‘playoff’ coach. He was just a damn good coach… but he could never get it done. I mean, in 10 years he only didn’t make the playoffs twice.

2009 I think I just wanted more. It would have been one of the greatest stories in NFL history. Brett Favre, considered done by just about everyone, goes to a hated long-time division rival. Everyone thinks he’s just going to get embarrassed out there. He has an absolute career year against all odds with a ragtag Vikings team. They get to the playoffs, still no one gives them a chance, they pound the Cowboys, outplay The “Everyone Loves Us!” Saints, and could have rolled into a SuperBowl with a 40 year old QB that other teams left for dead. It would have been Favre vs. Manning. With a win, the redemptive story would have been complete. Favre gets one more ring (along with first time rings for Adrian, Hutch, Allen, the Williams boys, etc.), a likely MVP, and rides off into the sunset a champion. Vikings fans finally get a taste of glory.

Nope.
6 (or was it 7?) turnovers. Goodell reaaaally wanting the ‘feel-good’ Saints to make the big show (i.e. ridiculous penalties and plenty of non-calls against Favre). 12 men on the f**king field in a clutch moment. More shady shit during overtime.
It actually amazes me despite all of that listed above, the Vikings still only lost by a field goal. 3 points.

One day, fellow Vikings fans. One day. :{

Well I will say the best way to lose a conference championship would be a meteor hitting the stadium.

I mean how cool would that be?
