SB Nation 2012 Mock Draft

Greetings Daily Norseman, P_Roach17 here from Bleeding Green Nation attempting to organize a SBnation-wide mock draft. After a disappointing season for my Birds, (and being less than thrilled with having to watch the Giants in the SB) I'm left with a football void at my core. So, as a result, I'm turning to the rest of SBnation to satisfy not only my football needs, but the needs of others who are on the outside looking in during this 2011 postseason. You will of course be representing the Minnesota Vikings in this Draft, who currently hold the 3rd overall pick in the 2012 draft, as I'm sure you all know. Your cooperation in this poll is greatly appreciated. Note: I would like for this poll to reflect the fans choice, not necessarily who you think your team will draft. Now for a few quick rules.

Star-divide

Rules:

1) There will be no trading picks. Trading picks would be both complicated, and time consuming, so everyone will just stay put at their set draft position.

2) Submit your votes for the player of your choice as soon as possible. After 2 days the results of the poll will be final, Daily Norseman will submit its pick at 1am on 1/29/12, and Dawgs By Nature will be on the clock.

3) If you feel as though I have left a player out that deserves consideration as your teams draft selection, then let me know in the comments section, and I will gladly add them.

4) Any draft talk (or argument) that is to be made pertaining to your Viking's pick, feel free to make in the comments section.

5) ******** Be sure to rec this post so that it will remain under the recommended fan post section for everyone to see, and so that they are able to cast their vote *********

Previous picks:

1) Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck

2) St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil

Hopefully this can be a fun experience for all of SBnation, as well as provide insight into the upcoming NFL draft. Be sure to vote and keep the ball rolling so that the rest of SBnation can participate. Thanks for your time, and good luck in the upcoming season. Daily Norseman is now on the clock!

I originally had him on but replaced him with Floyd. Should’ve just left him lol

haha sorry man I wanted to but realized it would just get too chaotic, and most likely wouldn’t have been realistic.

Done

Don’t forget to rec this so it stays up. Thanks again!

If Luck and Kalil are off the board

then the Vikings will be looking to trade down – and that’s why i have selected Reiff, he’d be the pick if they traded down.

by Scottish Viking on Jan 27, 2012 7:43 AM CST reply actions

Kalil will be gone

From what I’ve been reading, Jeff Fisher is a proponent of building a team around the line. Their recent O-line selections haven’t panned out, so we can expect Kalil to be grabbed by the Rams. I therefore agree with you - trade down, and take Reiff. I would then use the extra pick from the trade down to work out a deal where we would be in a position to also take DeCastro. If Spielman could make this happen, he would be resolving our offensive line problems in one draft, and would be giving us what could become the best offensive line the Vikings have had since the days of Tingelhoff, Zimmerman and Yary.

by Vikinole on Jan 27, 2012 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

All depends on the combine

If Blackmon comes in and has a Julio Jones type of workout, I think he’ll be too tough to pass up. Their O-line selections haven’t panned out because of injuries, not because their talent is terrible.

Also, on a side note, I think the Rams are a good tale of caution for going too heavily in one direction on draft day. I know we all want the O-line immediately fixed, but I’d rather we weigh out our options than risk making the same mistake the Rams have and pretty much ‘waste’ a draft because we reach at a need.

This++

Rams would be the first to go more than 2 years in a row with first round picks to teh O line..I read whwere they believe in the QB they have and Revnge your right its not lack of talent they need a WR threat and this is the year for them do get one

so no trading down...

…does drafting RG3, then trading him after the fact work into this mock??

no??

well, crap.

Can I buy a vowel...?? +1, Kluwe.

i like this idea

I posted something to this effect a couple days ago, and no one else liked the Idea, but I think it is a progressive way to get lots of picks for trading the #3 pick

by RickyBrune on Jan 27, 2012 5:33 PM CST up reply actions

I hate the idea.

It gives you less leverage than just trading the spot. Every team knows the Vikes are still behind Ponder so now we have a QB we NEED to unload so that give the other team leverage plus it would be a blow to Ponder’s confidence.

Closest vote yet guys

Thanks again for participating, and best of luck in the upcoming draft!

Note to those who vote for Claiborne: Minnesota does not care about pass coverage and haven’t in years. They aren’t going to spend the third overall pick on a CB. Wishful thinking (which I share btw) but I don’t see it happening.

I'm kinda impressed so many people voted for Griffin

Is that because of BPA, trade or do you think we need a new QB?

The Vikes aren't in a remodeling or reconstruction they are in a burn the place down and start praying they don't mimic the Lions rebuilding process.

by Grime on Jan 31, 2012 9:21 AM CST reply actions

that's why I voted for him :D

I have a feeling

that this poll would be very different if only members could vote. It would probably look something like this:

Morris Claiborne: 46%
Justin Blackmon: 30%
Johnathan Martin: 14%
Robert Griffen III: 10%

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

by Alittlemore_cowbell on Feb 3, 2012 9:51 AM CST reply actions

No hate for Reiff but Martin is better

He fits our blocking system and has more upside than Reiff. Reiff is a good player but he is not as good of a run blocker and does not have the quck feet Martin does. After the combine you will see Martin rise and Reiff drop.

by nmvikesfan on Feb 4, 2012 5:45 PM CST up reply actions

Actually Martin's stock has been dropping and ...

Reiff’s stock has been rising, but your right. We’ll know more after the combine.

by vking1 on Feb 4, 2012 6:09 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah but these are the same people who are rating Reiff over Kalil

Martin won first team All- American OT for a reason. OT’s from Iowa tend to peek in college and not improve in the Pros- see Gallery, Baluga. Now I’m not saying Reiff fits this mold but it does look like a pattern because Iowa has a way of coaching up their players above their talent.

by nmvikesfan on Feb 4, 2012 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

because Iowa has a way of coaching up their players above their talent.

If this is the case maybe we should get the Iowa coaches to coach up our O line.

Claiborne

Despite the crappy O-line and the the lack of a #1 WR, the Vikings offense is putting up enough points to win games, IF the secondary could stop the pass. With all the WRs in FA this year, the Vikings can find a proven speedster there.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!

have you watched videos of Claiborne?

if so please send me a link where he looks like the #3 pick. I spent some time watching youtube highlights of him and I was not all that impressed. As much as I agree with your logic about WR via free agency I’m just not convinced that Claiborne is the lock down corner we need. And we need more than just a speedster (see Troy Williamson). I think we trade down if Kalil is off the board. If no trades are allowed I would prefer to Blackmon > Claiborne as I think Blackmon is very safe pick and gives us a strong, sure handed athletic receiver … don’t kid yourself we were missing that big time last year. But again if you have a link showing Claiborne is better light please share. He had one above average college year. Claiborne wasn’t even the best DB at LSU. I don’t like the idea of taking LSU second best DB at #3 and banking on him to be the lock down corner of the future…this is pick the Vikings CANNOT miss on.
