2012 Senior Bowl Open Thread

For those of you that are fortunate enough to have the NFL Network, the 2012 Senior Bowl is about half an hour away from kickoff down in Mobile, Alabama. As we know, the Minnesota Vikings' coaching staff is running things for the North team, and they'll be going against a South team led by Mike Shanahan and the rest of the Washington Redskins' coaching staff.

Here are a few tidbits to get you prepared for the game itself.

The official Senior Bowl website is right here. They've got some good stuff, including the entire rosters for both sides.

Our friends at Mocking The Draft have a list of 15 players that impressed them in Mobile this week (along with 12 that did not).

The Great Blue North Report has a list of who they thought were the 25 best players during the Senior Bowl workouts this week.

For those of you that are really into the draft. . .and, hey, some of us have been "really into the draft" since about October after watching our favorite team go 3-13. . .this should be pretty interesting. If you're going to be watching the game, feel free to talk about it right here. I'll be watching until about 5 PM Central, at which point I need to head out to the ol' day job, but the thread is here for all of you that want to discuss this one.

Marvin McNutt and Mike Adams

Being from Iowa originally, I’m interested in seeing how McNutt does, as he could be a mid-round guy with some upside. I’m interested in the best senior OT, and the consensus points to Mike Adams.

Joe Adams too

He measures up like DeSean Jackson, but maybe not quite as fast…but he caught the first ball!

oops, fumble.

But they’re clearly looking his way early.

Yeah I'll be watching til 5 central too,

but that’s really all the time the starters play. I’m so pumped.

Guys to look out for:

North: Brian Quick, WR
Mike Adams, OT
Kevin Zeitler, Original Gangster/Center
Marvin McNutt, WR

South: All of their defensive line.
Janoris Jenkins, CB
Dwight Bentley, CB

Etc…can’t wait!

Cheerleaders

After a quick shot of the cheerleaders, I thought…hmm…I wonder who the cheerleaders are going to be for the game? Then a quick google search revealed, it will be the Alabama State and Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders. Whew…I feel better now that I know THAT.

1st possesion for the North

Mike Adams, OT was lined up against Quinton Coples most of the series, and appeared to dominate. Adams was rarely pushed back, and he often finished through the end of the play. He looked good.

McNutt had one look to the endzone, but was overthrown. I think it’s good that the Vikings are getting a good look at both of these guys.

North Defense - Two turnovers generated

While I understand there are limited plays available, the defensive players have been in position for the North so foar in the first quarter and have generated two turnovers (a fumble recovery and an INT).

Hoping for a strong showing for my two homer choices

Kelechi Osemele and Leonard Johnson.

Osemele would be a great pick up in the second round if we end up in a trading deal if Kalil doesn’t fall to us and Johnson is a mid-draft corner who shut down Justin Blackmon pretty well in our huge win. For a pick that late he’d have some nice potential.

by Crosseyes on Jan 28, 2012 3:48 PM CST reply actions

it'd actually be really nice if Osemele slipped to the 3rd...

…i am not on the OG as a necessity train, but that would be a huge steal for us.

funny enough, i wanted to see Marvin Jones from Cal, and he caught the first TD.

keeping an eye out for Harrison Smith, Lavonte David and Casey Hayward.

forget what i said, Osemele in the 2nd and put him at RT...!!

i have wanted to replace Loadholt for over a year, Osemele is shutting down Coples (i am currently about 20min behind real time on my DVR).

seriously considering that for my next mock… we need DB help early, but imagine Kalil and Osemele… nice bookends on the line. (and if Loadholt finally steps up, well, Osemele can still kick inside).

maybe a round 3 pickup for the middle? I’d love to see that happen.

Very athletic and disruptive behind the line. We need a MLB with some speed and range and ths kid has it.

Not a bad game

I think that some players stood out but it really is hard to tell due to the restrictions on the defense and offense.

I cannot really say that a player played badly in the game. It was good just for a little competitive fun though.

I liked Mike Adams, Kelechi Osemele, Senio Kelemete, Quintin Coples, Vinny Curry, Antonio Allen, Bobby Wagner, and Casey Hayward.

If I had to give a player of the game I would probably give it to Joe Adams. He was pretty good even though he fumbled.

My other player of the game is Alameda Ta’amu. I thought he was very disruptive when he was in there. He was penetrating and causing problems constantly and forced the South to double team him a lot. In an All Star game they are double teaming. Come on man.

He did very well and when he was in the South had a hard time maintaining drives.

Of course I am a little biased but the film don’t lie. Go back and watch the game.

by MarkSP18 on Jan 28, 2012 8:29 PM CST reply actions

Yea they were...

double teaming Martin (Michigan) too. I saw some nice 3rd round hopefuls, back-ups if not potential starters. V. Curry has a serious motor him baking up Robison would be nice.

Stay away from any of those corners from the North side and that safety from Mich St. don’t even breathe the same air, from what I saw way too green and even made our secondary look good.

by midnightwonder on Jan 29, 2012 1:29 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with you,

although something is a little bit off when I watch Coples play. He got locked down by Mike Adams today, and he doesn’t seem to care about the game a whole lot. Bobby Wagner looked really good, I thought. I might want to grab him at the top of round 3 if he’s there. Joe Adams was electric, too. Alameda was blowing EVERYTHING up in the backfield (I’m biased) and was a big reason Vinny Curry was doing well.

Other people I liked were Brandon Taylor from LSU, Gerrell Robinson from Arizona State, Harrison Smith from ND and Mike Martin from Michigan.

by Landonio on Jan 29, 2012 2:19 AM CST up reply actions

yea Mike Martin...

did look good. I’m not sure about starter material but looks great as a backup. I was hoping that A Jeffrey from S.Ca would slip a little in the draft so we could maybe get him early 3rd or late 2nd with a trade pick if we got it. He didn’t play in this game but I think he’s a slower Megatron he catches everything with his hands and not his body.

by midnightwonder on Jan 29, 2012 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

Our guys looked real good today

Hayward was the best CB and Ta’amu was the best DT. 2nd and 3rd round picks? That would be sweet.

Hats off to Frazier and the Vikings coaching staff.

I think it was Mayock who reported saying to Shanahan “You guys are stacked! If you lose this game it’s got to be due to coaching.” The north squad looked better prepared, I thought – though I am biased. Funny that Frazier got a gatorade shower at the game’s end.

This seemed to be one of the more interesting Senior Bowls. There were a lot of good players out there that would be good in purple. The north LBs were all good – especially Bobby Wagner from Utah State. Zack Brown, LB from NC looked good. DE Coples is a giant and when he wants to play he’s unblockable but he don’t seem to hold up against the run very well, a couple times I saw him get steamrolled.

Lots of missed tackles by both secondaries, lots of dropped passes, and just fair QB play but I’d sure like to have Ta’amu, Wagner, Joe Adams, and Pead or Doug Martin on the Vikes.

by Caretaker QB on Jan 29, 2012 2:08 AM CST reply actions

I think Frazier was OK but I was disappointed in the end of the game.

The North got the ball in the 4th quarter with 4:02 left in the game. They picked up two first downs and then Frazier ran three straight running plays, forced the South to use their timeouts, and kicked a field goal to go up by 10. Lame.

Even Charles Davis was commenting on how it was an All Star game and you’d like to see the North try and punch it in the end zone (i.e., let the players play for evaluation purposes).

But not Frazier. He wanted to get the win in a meaningless game that no one cares who won or lost. Just how the players played. And even that is not given much attention since the scouts came to see the practices and most leave before the game.

This, I am afraid, is his M.O. Last year he was in denial and claimed the Vikings could compete when most felt they needed to start the rebuild. So he decides to waste 7.5 mil or whatever on Donovan McNabb after drafting Ponder. He should have started Ponder from day one and used Webb whenever they felt Ponder needed a break. They could have used that money on one or two other free agents. Like Manny Lawson who signed a one year 3 mil deal with Cincinnati. Or Evan Mathis who signed a one year deal with Philly.

Now he is going into this year probably with that same I got to save my job mentality and will hang onto some aging veterans who will be paid way too much and will not make a difference next year. The only thing that will do is take away playing time from a youngster that need to be developing and gaining experience.

by MarkSP18 on Jan 29, 2012 7:54 AM CST up reply actions

The good thing

Frazier is no longer in charge of personnel decisions, so the “save my job with veterans” won’t fly. Please don’t suck Spielman.

Don't you know who the *^$% I am?

by Jeppernaut on Jan 29, 2012 10:04 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

I wouldn't be too woried

He is coaching to win for the Vikings, the fact that he went for a field goal over a touchdown really is a non-issue. Maybe if you are really in to scouting it is a little disappointing but to go out on a stretch and say that winning was a bad thing, I don’t really think that is true. What if we lost, than it would be all about how the coaching staff sucks.

"You can write articles and do whatever you want, you can break down every player. Good, bad or ugly. But we just aren't good enough as a team, as a group. Offensively, defensively and special teams, from the No. 1 on the roster to the last man on the roster. We just aren't good enough. It's as simple as that." - Chad Greenway

by Grape Drank on Jan 29, 2012 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

i understand the disappointment in...

the decision but you have to remember this was an evaluation of more than just the people playing. His new staff was being evaluated also and it might seem meaningless to us, but a win breeds confidence. Instilling valuable coaching experiences will go a long way for the Vikings in the future so I can understand his decision in that respect.

by midnightwonder on Jan 29, 2012 2:38 PM CST up reply actions

So...wanting to win is a bad thing?

I’m glad he played it like that in the 4th quarter. It shows he wants to win. Wanting to win is his M.O. and I’ll take that any day of the week.

Ponder. Peterson. Percy. Purple Perfection.

by CCNorsemen on Jan 29, 2012 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

They were already up by 7

He should have let the players play. The defenders still would have had an opportunity to stop the South.

The game is for evaluation purposes of the players only.

Not his coaches. If he is evaluating them in this game then he should not have hired them in the first place.

Let the players play and quit being a wimp.

I don't know if settles the arguement

But here’s a fanshot that was provided by an NFC East blogger who actually went down to Mobile to cover the senior bowl. He clearly was impressed with how the Viking ran their practices and was not surprised with the fact that the North whipped the South, even though the South was believed to have more talent.

As to your particular arguement Mark, I totally see what you are saying. That last drive was not exciting to watch. But I think you are right, that is Frazier’s M.O. I don’t think he will ever be the type to run up the score on anyone. He’ll take a 1 or 3 point win. He probably didn’t want to embarass the South squad by tacking on an extra TD. I know for us as Fans, we wanted to see more, but that is not Frazier’s style. I am not supporting either arguement, I am just sharing my opinion as to why I thought the game ended the way it did.

Senior Bowl Stock up

Casey Hayward, CB Vanderbilt—INT, 2 pass break ups.
Bobby Wagner, LB Utah St.—INT, special teams demon, very athletic
Zack Brown, LB UNC—Speed, speed, speed. Needs help in run game, but solid in coverage
Joe Adams, WR Arkansas—Over 100 yards receiving with poor QB play.
Quinton Coples, DE UNC—Questionable motor, unquestionable talent. Possibly the only top 15 pick in Mobile.
Alameda Ta’amu, DT Washington—Very disruptive, able to split double teams.
Isaiah Pead, RB Cincinati—earned a spot in the return game, 3rd down back potential
Doug Martin, RB Boise St.—patient runner, good burst through the hole, tough runner
Cordy Glenn, OL Georgia—better week of practice than game performance. shows versitily to play RT or guard.
Kendall Reyes, DT UConn—Developmental 3 tech. Showed good quickness at the point of attack. Able to shoot the gap and be disruptive in the backfield.
Nigel Brandham, LB FSU—Very good athlete, stout against the run. Showed ability to be sideline to sideline defender.

Senior Bowl Stock down

Every QB in Mobile—I thought the QB performances were straight up awful. These prospects were exposed. They all have physical and ability limitations. I will be surprised if any of these QB’s are drafted before the 3rd round.
Every WR not named Joe Adams—Unfortunately these receivers were not helped out by their QBs. I was hoping to see Jeff Fuller on display. The few times he was targeted, he either dropped the ball or was unable to make the first guy miss after he caught the ball. Dwight Jones did not have a good week in creating separation or getting off the jam at the LOS. Marvin Jones created some buzz for himself this week with his size. He did catch a TD pass, but in the NFL he will get called for offensive PI if he uses that technique.
Mike Adams, OT Ohio St.—His short arms allow opposing DLinemen to get into his pads. He was beat several times this week in one on one passing rushing drills. He will struggle with the spin move and the bull rush at the next level. I see him as a RT in the NFL.
Janoris Jenkins, CB N. Bama—He was beat all week in practice by the double move and he bit on a double move in the game. Fortunately for Jenkins, the QB threw a terrible pass so he didn’t give up a TD on the play.
Donnie Fletcher, CB Boston College—He struggled all day. Many scouts said during the week that Fletcher will end up a safety in the NFL.
Lavonte David—Size has been an issue for David all along and it will continue to be at the next level. He’s a great athlete and will get a chance somewhere, but he is a liability in the run game.

Agreed and again, excellent analysis.

Will be interesting to see that the Vikes got a close-up look at all these players but with the #3 pick will likely pick someone who wasn’t there like Kalil, Blackmon, or Martin (stanford). I tried to watch for Claiborne but didn’t see him do anything.

by Caretaker QB on Jan 29, 2012 12:37 PM CST up reply actions

absolutely right

If not for the 65 underclassmen, this would be a very weak draft from top to bottom. I am willing to bet that the top 10 players drafted will be entirely underclassmen. Coples is the only senior who might sneak in. Claiborne wasn’t thrown against in the title game. Bama went after Matheiu instead. Claiborne is a junior so he wasn’t in Mobile.

Hey NMV..

What’s your opinion on Wilson? I thought that if he could some how grow another 4 to 5 inches than he would be worth looking at as a potential backup.

I like your eye and assessments of the game so I want to get your feel for him.

by midnightwonder on Jan 29, 2012 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

I don't ever count out players as smart or dedicated as Wilson

Ya it’s tough that he’s only 5’10" and realistically he will never be a starter in the NFL, but I could see him have a Doug Flutie type career. One thing that really stands out for me is that he was named a team captain as soon as he got to Wisconsin. That says a lot about his ability as a leader. Those intangibles will go a long way in helping him get a shot somewhere.

Many people felt Adams was the best tackle in this game

I did not think he played that bad at all in the game.

He did OK in practice as well. Not great but not bad either.

by MarkSP18 on Jan 29, 2012 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

Adams was definately the best OT in the senior bowl

Which is why the Vikings are lucky to have their choice of 3 juniors with the #3 pick. What I didn’t like was how he allowed rushers to get into his pads and practically bend him over backwards. He’s not a puncher, and his arms are short for being 6’7." He’s probably the 4th best OT in the draft which means he’ll probably get drafted early. I agree with you, he’s not bad, but he’s not great either. That’s not the description of a 1st rounder to me.

Senior Bowl QBs

I thought Kellen Moore showed good awareness although his arm is very questionable. He can’t help it if the receivers couldn’t catch anything in that game.
