Aging Veterans
The Vikings have many concerns this off-season. From the secondary to the offensive line. You name it, we need it. One of our problems is that we have a lot of aging players. To make matters worse most are locked up in higher priced contracts. However there are a small few who I think deserve to be back, on reduced pay anyways. Yet there are still more who should probably just be cut.
Ok I will list the player - age - cap hit
KEVIN WILLIAMS - 31 - $7mil
I think Williams should be brought back. He is still well above average at his position, the need is not dire at his DT slot. Kevin wants to return as a Viking and finish out his career here (currently he is under contract for two more years) He was interviewed by the Pioneer Press and had this to say about 2012 and beyond "We're going to see how things go this offseason and hopefully we'll get something done and I can finish here" He will face a challenge though, he is at a dangerous tipping point, but his ethic remains committed "I'm still going to play at a high level," he said. "If you can get it rolling all year, I think, heck, I might have had 10 sacks." Bottom line is, Williams is willing to renegotiate his contract and he can still preform well, bring him back.
STEVE HUTCHINSON - 34 - 6.95 mil ANTHONY HERRERA - 31 - 2.65 mil
I don't think either one of these guys should be brought back. Neither one of them are contributing on a high level and take up considerable cap space. There was a time when we finally had to put Sully on the field, I think that time has come for some of our younger lineman. It's hard to tell how they will preform but we have to find out sometime. Not to mention the cap space could be handy for free agent signings
ANTOINE WINFIELD - 34 - 3 mil
Antoine is coming back from some forgettable years, however he would still be an upgrade to this defense and should be brought back. His salary might become an issue though. There might be a way out of it for the Vikings however, Winfield's contract contains a clause that will reduce his pay if he plays in the dime or nickle slot. This might be a win/win for both sides. In the same article from above Antoine was asked what he would like to do next year, said he would like to play in the nickle. He considers himself more effective from the nickle, and at this point I would tend to agree that is best for him. He ruled out a move to safety.
Here is a link to the article, couple of other good player interviews

You forgot to write a peice on Herrera : )
I voted Winfield because he’s still our best corner and run stuffing DB.
If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

I would replace Winfield via free agency
Even at 3 mil plus he is not going to get better. He will be 35 to start the season. There are not too many 35 year old DBs out there for a reason. Charles Woodson is already 35. Champ Bailey is 33.
Since the Vikings are rebuilding they should use that money elsewhere. I would sign a free agent CB and then hope that Cook will be able to play next year. They have Allen, Sherels, and Burton to fight for the nickel and dime spots. They can also draft another CB if they wanted.
They could use Winfield’s money and Cedric Griffin’s money on a safety or two.
Let Winfield go where he wants and have a chance to play for a ring in his last year or two. That is not going to happen here.
I'd keep Winfield until Cook's situation plays out.
I’m definitely on board with signing a FA CB and S but I think it’s unrealistic to expect more than 2-3 quality upgrades in one FA period. I’d like to see the Vikings sign one CB, one S, and one WR is free agency and address the O-line and linebacking corps in the draft. Griffin will be gone and with Cook’s availability being very uncertain I’d like to keep Winfield around for one more year just to provide a little stability and leadership for all the young guys in the secondary.

Agreed
You do not release Winfield until you know Cook will return AND you have signed a free agent. But secondary should be addressed via free agency. I would not take a high round draft pick CB this year at all. I would rather pay a veteran (around 25 to 27) that has a track record in the NFL. I would consider a late round CB/FS type though in the draft. They need depth too.
once again I'm with Mark...
I’d ditch Winfield as well. Love the guy, love what he’s meant for us, but he’s old and I don’t think he can make it through a season at this point.
Kevin Williams is a no-brainer to bring back. He’s the anchor of the whole defense. And he makes half as much as our 2nd best defensive player Jared Allen.
We need K Williams
I’m dreading watching Guion jump offsides 10x next season

KWill by far
He has more left in the tank and now aftre he gets his foot problem and knee taken care this offseason, I think he’ll be back closer to his dominate self.
Kevin needs to be back.
It comes down to Kevin and Antoine. It’d be tough to see Winny go, but I’ll get over it.

Williams
Im thinking also It is time for some tough calls its the only way the Vikes are going to get to moving on..If we were at a point where there was no doubt of really competeing next year Id say keep Winfield also but keeping him is just not a priorty. Out of respect I would hope they sat down with him and said, Winny we love yah but we going to try and get you to a team that is in the window.
